History• The Checkerspot Butterfly was named after the first Lord

Baltimore.• It’s wing colors are orange, black & white• It is the Maryland state insect because it is the most populated

insect in Maryland and it’s wings are the same color as the Maryland flag

• The reason that it is becoming extinct is that it’s habitat is changing caused by global warming

LIFE CYCLE OF THE CHECKERSPOT BUTTERFLY

The mother lays their eggs on a Turtlehead

The eggs hatched and turn into caterpillars. They eat the turtlehead’s leaves.

When they are ready, the caterpillars make a cocoon to turn into the butterflyWhen

they are done. The new butterfly jumps out of the cocoon to start the cycle again

Biotic and Abiotic Factors

Biotic Abiotic

O Leaves, flowers, marsh plants, Butterflies, turtleheads In a butterfly habitat, there are biotic factors

O Air, water, dirt, soil

Structural

The antennae helps them collect pollen

Small legs are too short for walking

Thorax helps the butterfly extend their wings bigger

Behavioral

The Baltimore searches for a host plant

They collect pollenLay hundreds of

eggs on its host plant so when the eggs hatch they can eat the plant

STRUCTURAL AND BEHAVIORAL ADAPTATION

Montgomery County Park I think the Brookside Gardens is the best

garden for these butterflies to build a habitat. This is the best park because it has many

flowers for the butterfly to pollenate with or they could use it as their host plants.

They also have a their very own garden just for butterflies so the butterflies could mate and lay eggs to increase the butterfly population.

Location: 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902

This habitat will need a lot of open space and sunlight in order for the butterfly to breath and move around freely

The supplies that will be needed are:Shovel to dig up the dirtFlowers; Turtleheads so they can lay eggs

and eat and other flowers so they can pollenate

Larval food: So the newborn can eatWater: EVERYONE NEEDS WATER

Habitat Design

Environment Impact

Pros Cons

When building the habitat, the population of the Checkerspot Butterfly will increase.

The butterflies can reproduce the flowers so they can eat and increase the population of flowers for other organisms

With all the collecting of flowers for the Baltimore’s habitat, the population of flowers will decrease, then other organism won’t have anything to eat.

Conclusion

From this project, I learned that the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly is a very fascinating and very unique

To keep this butterfly from extinction, we need to keep our environment green by planting more flowers and trees. Also prevent global warming from increasing by turn off electronics when you are done using them.

We also should build a lot of habitats so the butterflies can live and reproduce.
