fire. Since the flames were contained, the adjacent houses only suffered smoke and water damage.

The Red Cross is tending to the displaced residents and Breath of Life Lutheran church on Clinton street is accepting donations for the family.

Mark Parker, pastor of the church, said that the most effecient donations would be gift cards or checks written out to the family. One of the daughters who lived at the house was a member of the church and according to Parker, the church community has come together to help the family rebuild.

twists of the play, while maintaining the simple and universal theme of the lengths people go for love.

Directed by Brad Norris, the play will run March 12th through the 29th, starting at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. House band The Napoleon Complex will play a 45 minute set before every show and Cafe Au Lait will serve refreshments.

The Church on the Square is located at 1025 S. Potomac Avenue and can be contacted at 443-261-4426.

In the midst of Thursday afternoon’s snowfall, residents of Canton were shocked to see smoke billowing out of a rowhome on the 3200 block of East Pratt Street.

A fire broke out around 11:30 pm and was said to come from the second floor bathroom in the middle house of a group rowhome. It was contained quickly once the Neighborhood Service unit and Fire Department arrived. All four current residents got out safely according the firemen on the scene.

The house belonged to Denise Webster who said that she “lost everything” in the

The Church on the Square in Canton will host the Baltimore premiere of Tom Horan’s 13 Dead Husbands, a play about Dee-Dee, a mysteriously beautiful siren whose husbands end up dead shortly after the wedding. Hosted by the Cohesion Theatre Company as its second inaugural production, the play documents the battle between two of Dee-Dee’s love interests with the overarching question of if they’ll make it out alive. The play boasts a unique and whimsical surrealist stage design that adds to the extreme plot

Long empty building to become “boutique-style” gym

Anybody who has driven past 512 S. Conkling Street has probably noticed the large building that has sat empty for years. Now the space is being transformed into a gym that is hoping to fit in while making people fit.

Peak Performance Fitness will join other gyms in the area such as Merritt Athletic, PUSH51 which focuses exclusively on CrossFit, and Canton Club.

The area is 4300 square feet and the owners are hoping to reclaim the space which was once a restaurant supply shop while still incorporating and improving the old elements of the building’s design.

Owner Wayne MacKenzie, a Canton resident, talks about their current task, which is covering the wooden floors that are over 100 years old. Another element

they’re embracing is the tin-roof which will be accented with more modern touches like Plexi-glass dividing wall. They’re hoping for a seven-month turn-around in renovating after small set backs due to permits and the weather setting back construction.

They’re reaching out to local artists to supply art for the gym, which will be switched out each month to display new artists.

“The idea is trying to get the community involved,” Paul Breen, who will be the trainer of all the classes offered and a resident of Patterson Park, said. They plan on doing charity nights where some of the profits go to a local cause.

“It was a good opportunity so we jumped on it. It was a little bigger than what we needed and it’s worked out really well so far,” Breen said.

MacKenzie and Breen are hoping to set themselves apart with what they call “group personal training” which means that the 55 minute classes will be limited to 20 people that are split up into two different workout circuits.

They’re also trying to differentiate themselves by having all their clients wear heart rate monitors that display their statistics as the work out of TVs across the studio. Breen says that after the work out, the monitor will e-mail you your stats so “you could compare and track your progress”.

He says this technology is gaining popularity in recent years, but this is the first time in will be available in Baltimore.

Breen was working at the Canton Club as a trainer when he met and worked with MacKenzie.

By the end of August, they both agreed that there wasn’t much variety in gyms in the area and hashed out their business plan on a napkin at Panera.

They both hope to reinvent the space into something accommodating but unique to the neighborhood in order to get a large diversity of clientele.

“We’re not CrossFit. It’s always ‘go at your own pace’,” MacKenzie says.

Long empty building to become “boutique-style” gym

“One of things we’re focusing on is we’re limiting the class size so we, the trainer, can focus on the individual as they work out,” MacKenzie said.

Peak Performance is aiming to create an “innovative fitness and training concept that incorporates group personal training,

strength training and cardio intervals to produce an effective total-body workout” for people of all physical backgrounds and make-up.

“We’re not trying to put spotlights on people, it’s going to be a dimmed atmosphere so you don’t feel like everybody is looking at you,” he said.

Peak Performance will only offer and be open during class time and they’re hoping to be able to expand the class sizes to 24 members once the classes gain popularity.

They hope for an official open in the first week of April but are working to start introductory classes at the end of March.

You can sign up for classes and register your spot on their website. More information on how the construction is going and when the gym will open can be found at their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PEAKBaltimore.

The owners of Peak Performance aim to modernize both the 100-year-old space and the fitness programs they will be offering. One feature includes individual heart monitors so class participants can track their stats during a workout. | Photos courtesy of Peak Performance

success” Monk said, and then says that Cohen is always trying to get Monk to hire young people in his laundromat.

Cohen’s platform was inspired by his times working as a social studies teacher for a public school in West Baltimore and as a founder for a non-profit for underprivileged youths and seeing the inequality that these children faced.

“What I saw was that we have this population of young people that have really been left out, they feel like they don’t have much of a voice in the processes that impact their communities.”

He tells a story about he took his students to New Orleans to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina and watching how a troubled student “lit up” after helping an elderly woman clean up her house. For him, this showed that everybody has a desire to help others and, on a larger scale, their communities.

With this knowledge, he created the non-profit The Intersection in 2010 which aims to teach leadership skills and community organization to at-risk children.

McCartney returned to encourage the audience to tweet about the event while using the hashtag #CommunityComes First, which

has become a tagline for Cohen’s campaign.“I think we have a ton of good stuff going

on here and I actually believe that Baltimore, as a city, is right on the verge of a Renaissance, our tech sector, our biomedical sciences, our hospitals, our hotels, our colleges, I think we are world-class, and yet we still remain deeply segregated. We still have major issues with unemployment, with violence, with crime, and with a population of children that are not doing well academically,” Cohen said.

“I’m really interested is increasing access to early childhood education, we know that every dollar invested actually yields seven dollars down the road. It helps to close the academic achievement gap, it keeps folks from being incarcerated, and it allows working parents to continue their careers.”

He expressed interest in improving public health by making fresh food more accessible and eliminating food deserts, and for increasing green spaces in the city.

“Patterson Park stands alone as one of the great urban renewal stories in recent history and the Creative Alliance has been a cultural anchor fusing together art and community forcing us all to think deeply about the choices that we make,” he said of the first

Mexican resturant La Tolteca to open on Boston Street

by GIANNA DECARLO [email protected]

La Tolteca will serve the staples like tacos, burritos, and margaritas, but it also hopes to expand Canton’s pallates by including more diverse dishes such as camorones and chiles toreados and other dishes that you couldn’t find in your neighborhood’s Chipotle. This location will also be adding new dishes such a civiche that the other locations have never served.

Martinez’s favorite dish are the street tacos which contain chopped steak, onion, cilantro, and hot sauce.

“If you go to Mexico, they have street vendors wherever you’re walking and they’ve got a little grill set up for the tortillas and the meat and they’ll make the tacos for you right there and it’s delicious,” Martinez says.

For those with a sweet tooth, unique desserts such as xangos, which is like a cheesecake wrapped in a fried flaky tortilla, and churros will be available to punctuate your meal.

Martinez expresses his reluctance to open in the area because of lack of parking, but he was comforted by residents and other local business owners who told him that Canton residents are willing to walk if the food is good.

While parking may be tight, Martinez emphasizes that bar space will not be. There will be two bars that bookend a family dining room that will have thirteen taps, the most of any La Tolteca location.

La Tolteca will offically open on Monday, March 16, but they’re hosting an invite-only soft opening on Sunday.

More information such as a full menu and hours can be found at www.latoltecamd.com or by calling 410-683-3340.

Looks like Canton is about to get a little bit spicier.

This month, the Mexican restaurant La Tolteca will open on 2324 Boston Street which was once inhabited by Horse With No Name.

For owner, Alfonso Martinez, commonly called ‘Fonsy’, La Tolteca is a family affair. His cousin Hector Caballero is also his business partner and both of their families have been involved in the restaurant industry for over 20 years.

This is the eighth La Tolteca to open after the success of the other locations in places like Bel Air and Cockeysville.

“We kind of have a cult following. We even had a kid that came in that got the La Tolteca logo tattooed on his arm,” Martinez says and laughs.

Colorful painted murals by a local artist and gold accents decorate the brick walls of the space. Paintings of traditional Mexican scenes and symbols were imported from Jalisco, Mexico, where Martinez and Caballero are from. Intricate tiled patterns and framed decorative plates catch your eye in whatever direction you look. The chairs, painted in rich reds and earthy yellow and greens, are just a bright as the walls that surround it and Martinez proudly gestures to one lone chair that’s painted white with a large Ravens symbol on it.

“Got to have the Ravens,” he says.Just from the atmosphere, it’s clear that a lot

of thought and money went into constructing an authentic experience that was reminiscent of the place that created the food you’ll be served.

La Tolteca owners Alfonso Martinez (right) and his cousin Hector Caballero (left) aim to bring authentic Mexican food, like this freshly made guacamole, to Canton. | Photos by

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

BIRDS HOUSE by Andy MindzAk

How the Orioles contracts compare

After watching Ubaldo Jimenez get hammered for six runs in 1.2 innings last Tuesday, I immediately thought to myself, “Here we go again.” After a rocky first season in Baltimore which saw him go 6-9 with a 4.81 ERA, Jimenez did not get his 2015 season off to the start he wanted. While he did calm down a little bit during his last start, lasting two innings and striking out five, he did walk three batters and give up two hits and a run.

While his four year deal worth $50 million isn’t the worst contract in baseball, it’s certainly not one of the best, which got me thinking, which contracts are worse than his? Currently, Ubalso has three years left and is owed $38.75 million. Luckily for you, I did all of the leg work, so here are five current contracts that are worse than Ubaldo’s.

CC Sabathia – SP – New York Yankees – Two Years remaining and owed $53 million – The wear and tear are starting to eat away at the once reliable Sabathia. Before 2014, Sabathia had seven years in a row with at least 200 innings pitched. Last year he was shut down by knee surgery and made only eight starts, and his ERA has been on the rise each year for the past four seasons. Not only is he not the most slender of individuals now with a bad knee, he also has a vesting option for 2017 worth $25 million if he does not end 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury, does not spend more than 45 days in 016 on the DL with a left shoulder injury, and does not make more than six relief appearances in 2016 because of left shoulder injury. So, it sounds like he might be making another $25 million in 2017. Keep in mind he will turn 35 this July.

Ryan Howard – 1B – Philadelphia Phillies– Two Years remaining and owed $60 million – This one is just terrible. Howard is owed $25 million this year and $25 million next year. In 2017 he has a $23 million team option with a $10 million buyout. Under no circumstance can I see them picking up that option, so Howard will have made $60 million over the next two seasons, for a guy who is terrible defensively and isn’t good enough to be an everyday DH as he can’t hit lefties.

Albert Pujols – 1B – Los Angeles Angels– Seven Years remaining and owed $189 million – Thanks to this terrible deal, Pujols will not become a free agent until he is 42 years old.

This contract was a nice “thanks for everything you’ve done”, except in this case, Pujols did that for another team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Now the Angels are stuck with an aging first baseman who hasn’t hit .300 since joining their team, after batting .300 in 10 of 11 seasons with his previous employer. Oh, by the way, that one season he didn’t bat at least .300 with the Cardinals? He batted .299.

Josh Hamilton – OF – Los Angeles Angels – Three Years remaining and owed $83 million – While I am putting this on the list, I am still hoping Hamilton can get it together to make the Angels get some return on this investment, but I can’t say that I see it happening. Hamilton just turned himself in for relapsing with drug and alcohol use, but we are waiting to hear what the punishment will be. I hope for his sake he gets the help he needs to kick his habit once and for all. From a contract standpoint, this one is pretty bad. He has three years left on a five year deal that he really hasn’t done much for since coming to LA. In two seasons with the Angels, Hamilton has batted .255 with only 31 HR and 123 RBI. One scary stat would be his 266 strikeouts in 914 at-bats. Last year he whiffed 108 times in only 338 AB. Not good.

Alex Rodriguez – 1B – New York Yankees – Three Years remaining and owed $61 million – This one is by far the worst. A-Rod will turn 40 this year, has worn down hips, and is off the juice, and he has three years left and is owed $61 million. He also has quite a few milestone bonuses to collect as well if he can reach them. If he reaches 660 home runs, he would earn him a $6 million bonus, and will earn bonuses for each HR milestone he passes. Currently he is 5th all-time in home runs, so it’s doubtful he will retire as the all-time leader, but still, $6 million is $6 million. Well, to most people anyway.

While the Orioles might not have made out well with the Jimenez deal, things could always be worse. At least they’re not the New York Mets who are still paying Bobby Bonilla $1.2 million each year until 2035. And yes, Bobby Bo did retire after the 2001 season. What’s even crazier than that is that Bonilla is making more money than the Mets’ ace Matt Harvey and #3 pitcher Zack Wheeler COMBINED (they only have a combined three years of MLB service, but still, that’s just crazy).

Hudson Street Stackhouse

Dominic DeSantis combined his love of Belgian beer

and ice hockey to create the perfect neighborhood

bar, Hudson Street Stackhouse.

It’s a neighborhood bar with a huge draft list, and sometimes a hockey game breaks out.

The Hudson Street Stackhouse—hidden among rowhomes near Hudson Street’s intersection with Lakewood Ave.—is a testament to owner Dominic DeSantis’s ability to take his own interests and create something for the whole neighborhood.

“I started this place from scratch, exactly how I wanted it,” says DeSantis, a Belgian beer fan and a lifelong hockey player. “I just like being around here; I like coming to work everyday. I’m always on my feet and always running around. It’s a nice mix of using your brain, if you will, and your back.”

The Stackhouse features about a dozen Belgian brews on tap at all times. “I’ll always have a Belgian tripel, a Belgian wit,

a Flemish red ale...It’s good beer, to put it simply,” explains DeSantis. American craft brews and other imports round out

the draft list, which is gaining notoriety.“We do get some people who come here from

out of town for the beer selection,” DeSantis says,

adding that he tries to keep a large portion of the ever-changing selection in the $5 range.

“You can come in here with 20 bucks, and have a burger and a few beers,” he says.During happy hour—Mon.-Fri. before 7 p.m., Sat.

before 5 p.m.—drafts are $2 off. The Stackhouse also features specials throughout the week—burgers are $5 on Tues.; Thursday is New York strip, two sides and dessert for $14.99, etc.Whatever day of the week, Stackhouse has a

“chill” crowd, DeSantis says.“You see all kinds in here—people in their 20s and 30s, and they’ll bring their parents in here when they’re in town,” he says. “I’ve never had to have a bouncer or a doorman—not that I’m saying I would never get one.” In the meantime, the Hudson Street Stackhouse

has found its niche.“I’ve had a lot of people come in here that aren’t necessarily beer drinkers,” says DeSantis, “but because they keep coming here, they’ll try new beer—good beer.”

Friends and family remember Leto’s love for lifeBy ERIK ZyGMOnT [email protected]“We didn’t think we’d need all this space, but obviously we did,” said Diane Posko to a couple hundred friends and family mem-bers gathered at Fell’s Point’s Polish Home Club last Friday to celebrate the life of Kimberly Leto.

Posko, Leto’s sister, said that Leto would not have wanted the event to be sad. “She would love for us to all focus on how much we all loved her and her smile and laugh,” Posko said. She also mentioned her sister’s “abso-lutely wicked” sense of humor and deep affinity for the spiritual.“Although Kim was not associated with a specific religion, she was very spiritual,” said Posko. “She had an uncanny ability to understand these ancient texts.” Jan Dietrich, a spiritual mentor for Leto, said that she “really valued the presence of God in her life.”

Cathy Gentry didn’t think that neighborhood parks could disappear, but she may find out otherwise.Last November she and some of her Janney St.-area neighbors attended a meeting of the city and the Baltimore Development Corporation informing them that the nearby Pompeian Olive Oil Company was interested in expanding and would like to buy Janney Street Park from the city—and the city was considering selling it to them.

Winter is still lingering which means your pets are still at risk for weather related issues. Whether your dog loves a winter wonderland or prefers to be cuddled up on the couch, always be prepared for winter hazards.

Let’s talk temperature! A fur coat isn’t flawless and it’s not a perfect insulator. If it’s too cold for you to stand outside in a winter coat, then it’s too cold for your pet. The shorter the fur coat, the less protection your pet has. Some dogs have undercoats that help keep them warm, but wet fur and below freezing temperatures still make their coats less sufficient. If the idea of a fancy coat for your pooch distresses you, don’t worry! There are many functional non-humiliating coats out there that can help in cold temperatures.

Protect those feet! Walking your dog in the city means walking them on sidewalks and streets, exposing their feet to ice melts. These salts can dry and burn the pads of their feet. Also, the salt remnants on their feet could be ingested when they lick their paws and potentially cause GI upset. Make sure to wipe down their feet after each trek outside. Another alternative would be using booties for their feet, although it’s probably more entertaining for you rather than your pets. You should also pay close attention walking along sidewalks because there could be sharp objects and debris buried in the snow!

Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your pet’s extremities lose blood circulation in the cold leaving their ears, paws and tails at risk for frostbite. Wet snow can pack between their toes and paw pads causing tissue damage and skin irritation. When body temperature falls below normal after exposure to cold temperatures, hypothermia may set in and could potentially cause cardiac arrest.

Deadly sweetness. Antifreeze is highly toxic and its sweet taste makes it very appealing for pets to lap up. It is rapidly absorbed and can shut down the kidneys. If you think your pet possibly ingested antifreeze, please call your vet immediately!

Old man winter. Cold weather can worsen

some medical conditions such as arthritis. Older and arthritic dogs have more difficulty walking in cold temperatures and are more prone to slip or fall. Pets with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and hormonal imbalances (Cushing’s Disease) have a harder time regulating their body temperature. So the cold temperatures make them more susceptible to medical problems, as well as very young and geriatric pets.

Know the limits! Many pets don’t know their limits when it comes to the cold and snowy weather, so it is up to the owner to be knowledgeable. Cold tolerance varies between pets due to their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. Make sure to protect your pet from weather associated health risks!
