“M” Dimension “M” is the horizontal measure from the base of the baluster to the most narrow point on the baluster body.
The”M” dimension is used when determining the minimum allowable”on-center” spacing of balusters in keeping with the Building Code‘s 4” Ball Rule.
The 4” Ball rule is a requirement that states there shall be no more than 4” between the widest portion of any baluster when placed in a guardrail. In other words, when you set up a guardrail, you should not be able to pass a ball measuring 4” in diameter through any part of the railing.
