Dong Van is a northernmost

upland district of Ha Giang province. It is about 146 kilometers far from Ha Giang. It has a total area of 46114.05 hectares with 19 communes. The northern and western border China with 52 kilometers of the border; the South borders Yen Minh District and the East borders Meo Vac district.

Being the northern rocky mountainous area , Dong Van has a quite complicated terrain. It has steed slopes and separated valleys, rivers and streams. This area has temperate climate with two seasons: rainy season and dry season. In the winter, temperature falls down to 10°C, the highest temperature in the summer is only 24°C. Wheather Ha Giang located in the

tropical monsoon and the high mountain. Therefore, this weather is cool all year around. The average temperature of year is from 21,6 – 23.9 degree Celsius. Weather in Ha Giang is separated in 2 main seasons: rainy season and dry season. The hot season has the highest temperatures up to 40 degree Celsius ( June and July ). The cold season is characterized with the lowest temperatures down to 2,2 degree Celsius (January). Some places of Ha Giang has snow and

heavy fog.

Dong Van Overview The Tay ethnic group is the

largest in the community of ethnic minorities in Vietnam.

The Tay ethnic group has other names such as Tho, Ngan, Phen, Thu Lao and Pa Di. Referring to the Tay people, we cannot talk about the pattern on their costumes. The most unique is the common way of using indigo. The main color of their costumes is indigo and no decorations.

Women usually wear long skirt with belts, blouse, and cloth shoes and round the neck, arm and leg silver. Women's belt is made from indigo cloth about two arm's length. The past women wear skirts, but recent common dressing;

Men wear pant, short sleeve, neck stood. In the summer festival, they wear white blouses.

Transportation

There are two passenger cars from Thai Nguyen Station to South Ha Giang station at 8:30am and 4:30pm. It is about 234km. They depart every day and spend about 3 hours 48 minutes .The cost is 100 VND.

After that, we take passenger car from South Ha Giang Station to Dong Van. It is about 139km. It spends about 2,5 hours. When we arrive Dong Van, we can rent motorbike to continue our route.

Taxi: From Ha Giang Station, we can take a taxi to our hotel. In the city, there are many different taxis. One of the most popular taxi is Taxi Son Dan (phone 02193861861).

La Chi ethnic group has

other names as Tho Den, Man, Xa. Their language belongs to the Ka dai language group The La chi ethnic group are the longest inhabitants in Ha Giang province.

Costumes of La Chi people have two main features is patterned embroidered fabric and patterned transplant. The favorite color of the La Chi people is black indigo.

Whereas, patterned graft is considered the art of traditional costumes of La Chi people. The women wear a long dress with four panels. .They like to wear long scarves and earrings, bracelets.

which are made from five pieces of clothing .They wear turbans and bracelets. Overall, their traditional

costumes have high

requirements about motifs.

La Chi People Dong Van rocky plateau

spreads over four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac in Ha Giang province. Dong Van rocky plateau is a special limestone area which has traces of the development of the earth, natural phenomena, gorgeous landscapes, high biodiversity and longstanding cultural traditions of the locals.

On 3/10/2010 "Geo-parks Dong Van Plateau" was officially recognized as a Global Geo-park by UNESCO. This is the only title in Vietnam and the second one in the southeast Asia. Dong Van Rocky Plateau is qualified to become a global geo-park with geological conditions, natural resource and original and impressive cultures such as the cultures of H’Mong, Lo Lo, Pu Peo and Dao ethnic groups.

Many Vietnamese and foreign visitors have decided to explore the 1,500-square-kilometer plateau. The area, formed by limestone, is an evidence for the formation of the Earth, which took place over 400 million years ago. The trip to Dong Van will give us new and interesting experience.

Quan Ba Heaven Gate is

located at a height of 1500m over sea level. In 1939, the French built a stone wall and a enormous wooden gate. This is the first gateway coming to Dong Van plateau.

The first thing we could feel here is the fresh air. From a height of 1500 meters we could take a look down to the valley, home of forested hills, secret grottoes and caves, colorful orchids, plum and peach trees, persimmon orchards, medicinal plants … a landscape of great beauty.

Also here, visitors will enjoy local culinary specialties, listening folk songs of ethnicity living in the Quan Ba and take a tour in to the villages nearly.

It can be said that this is a very beautiful painting which shows the blend between Heaven and Earth. That make the spectacular landscape with mountains covered with clouds.

The trip will be imperfect if we visit Dong Van without going to Quan Ba Gate.

There are two types of Lolo ethnic group in Dong Van-

Lolo “Hoa” and Lolo “Đen”. When speaking about the unique cultural of Lolo ethnic groups, many people often refer to the traditional dress of Lolo women.

Lolo women usually have trousers on and shirts cleft chest to hem, stuck together by square or triangle pieces of colorful cloth.

The belt is delicately made and it’s very important in dress-style. For Lolo “Hoa” women’s dress, the sleeves lock smaller than those of Lolo

“Đen” Particularly, their belts are

nicely decorated, their scarves are colorful embroidered and it takes them much of their time and strength to prepare such costumes

On new-year days, weddings or festive occasions, Lolo women put on their best and well-made clothes.

Quan Ba Twin Peaks is situated next to the National Road 4C, about 40 km from Ha Giang Town. It is situated at an altitude of over 1000 meters above sea level, fresh air, wild scenery, majestic nature with endlessly range of Limestone Mountain. Coming here, visitors can admire the artwork endowed by Creator to the land.

Among the stretching mountains and continuous terraced fields, two mountains are raised in shape of two peaches. Everyone will be amazed at the extraordinary beauty given by the Creator, which has been associated with the legend “Fairy Mountain”.

With beautiful landscape and fresh air Quan Ba Twin Peaks is becoming an attractive resort tourism area in Dong Van as well as in Ha Giang.

Position The palace of H’Mong King is

located in Sa Phin commune, Dong Van district next to 4C highway on Ha Giang city street to Dong Van,. It is about 131 kilometers from Ha Giang province and about 13 kilometers from Dong Van town.

History

The position of the house was defined by Chinese geomancer on a hillock in the valley and behind the mountain which is in shape of “raspberry” . This place is surrounded by the high mountains. A century ago, Vuong family ruled totally this extensive plateau and was named as the King . H’Mong group of people was called as H’Mong King . To affirm the role and power , Vuong Chinh Duc (Vuong Chi Sinh’s father) went to everywhere to find workers for building his house. Chinese geomancers from Van Nam and a group of the best H’Mong workers had built H’Mong King’s house for 8 years (1920 – 1928).

Architecture The palace of H’Mong King

is a splendid palace with original architecture. The palace has outstanding architecture and is imbued with the cultural features of ancient Vietnamese people and H’Mong ethnic group.

The palace is covered with two rounds of stone wall . The outer wall is about 40 centimeters thick and 2 meters (6 feet) tall. The inner wall is thicker and stronger than the outer.

It spreads over an area 1200m2. There are three main stilt houses in the palace with 4 horizontal rows, 6 vertical rows and 64 different rooms.

All the three houses are made from wood. Their pillars trusses, floor, wattles and roofs are made from precious wood.

Over the sunny, rain, storm and wind, in hard climatic conditions over 1600m high, Vuong family’s palace retains the old form and the historical value.

H’Mong people - ethnic group most popular in Ha Giang and Dong Van. Speaking of H’Mong people in Dong Van, it is impossible not to mention the traditional clothes of H’Mong people.

Beside, all the colors and patterns, H’Mong people also like to decorate their clothes with metal coins that are carefully attached to waistbands, leggings, hats with colorful strings.

When the New Year comes, H’Mong girls make waistbands with many coins to decorate their dresses. A family’s economic status can be gauged from the number of coins in their dresses

Buttock flapping Every spring, festivals of

H’Mong people are more interesting, because of having the festival of “buttock flapping” – a tradition that had disappeared for many years. The custom of “buttock flapping” is only observed on the first days of the New Year.

Drawing a woman aside Beside, H’Mong people is

also well- known for the special custom that is drawing a woman aside to get married with her. This custom happens only in case of without her parent’s permission for marriage, therefore, both man and woman decide together to perform this drawing custom in order to make her become his wife.

Hien ancient town ...etc. Dong Van ancient town is the cultural heritage of our country's highlands. it has existed for hundreds years old at the central of Dong Van rocky mountain plateau . With the ancient architecture, it is the pride of Vietnamese culture.

The old Dong Van centre area used to belong to Dong Quan, Nguyen Binh, Tuong Yen, Tuyen Quang. In the past, Tay, H’Mong, Hoa, Kinh, Lolo…gathered in Dong Van. since 1887, French had ruled Ha Giang and had set out four areas in Dong Van which were delivered to the local leaders to govern. In that time, Dong Van ancient town had been built with an unique ancient Vietnamese architecture style.

The unique architectural of the old town at the Highlander is the houses built 1- 2 floors with two yin-yang roofed tiles upon the solid truss structure , stone sub-foundation, earthen walls and large columns . Many houses were built under the French and were made from wood.

Therefore, they have remain "inert liver and minnows moon". A more noticeable feature in Dong Van ancient town is that there are many red lanterns hanged in front of houses to light up at night and dispel the harsh cold of Plateau. Dong Van Market works is a combination of Vietnamese- Chinese architecture . It includes stone colonnades, which diameter of is large enough for four people to hug, carved beautifully with U-shaped structure.

From statistic of Dong Van district, there are about 40 ancient houses currently. one of the oldest houses is Luong family's, which is about 300 years old, and the rest of houses are approximately 100 years old.

Dong Van ancient town is a fascinating tourist destination in the north of our country, which preserved the oldest customs & usages and the value of the unique intangible cultural of ethnic minorities.

“Gau Tao” festival is the

most typical festival of H’Mong people. It is held after the 2nd of January lunar year, lengthening from one to three days on the relatively flat hills. This is a picture of spiritual and cultural life – physical of ethnic H’Mong. The purpose of “Gau Tao” festival is to pray happiness, lucky for their life and family.

Opening ceremony is dancing with pan-pipe, the following part, songs are shown by an old man who represented the people in the village and other ones.

At the end of ceremony, main part is really exciting on over the hill. Especially dancing with pan-pipe, to be performed on a pole, these artists are impressed viewers with dangerous performance such as blending their body over a pole that is overpass a pan of “Thang Co”…

Although festival ended but ethnic people had still done until January full moon, after that beginning productive labor.

Lung Cu flag tower is a national flag at the top of Lung Cu Mountain also known as Dragon Mountain. It is in a height of about 1,700m over sea level. It belongs to Lung Cu commune at the northernmost point of the Vietnam. The flag tower is about 22km from Dong Van town.

Lung Cu flagpole appeared at the first time in Ly dynasty then it was re-built and completed in 2010 .The flag tower is designed in octagonal shape. Its foot is mounted 8 blue slaps of stone reliefs with 8 surfaces of drums above illustrating the stages of the historical period of the country and the customs of the Ha Giang people. Besides, there is a spiral staircase inside the shaft of flag tower to the top. The most important thing is that flag’s area is 54 square meters representing 54 groups of people in Vietnam. At the bottom of the tower, you can see China on the other side of the mountains. Looking down from here, there are two ponds on two sides of the mountains which never dry up during the year and is the source of water for the use of the local people.

One of the most popular festival in Dong Van, Ha giang is “H’Mong Khen” festival often occurring in 3 days (31/8-2/9). It attracts thousands of people participating in, but most of them are the young who love to travel and explore. It opens annually at 19:30 on August,31st at the stage of Dong Van ancient town.

In the next morning, there are a lot of fantastic “H’Mong Khen” dances for people to enjoy. The traditional instrument in this festival is “Khen”, a kind of instrument of H’Mong people. The “khen” sound not only connects the deities with people, the dead and the live, but also leads the dead to their ancestors. Moreover, “Khen” sound often is used by H’Mong boys to express their love to H’Mong girls. Especially, it helps them to build a happy family. Therefore, the “Khen” has been inherited through many generations and now it still remains original values. This festival is an opportunity for artisans to exchange, preserve and develop human beauty of the “Khen”.

And it also contributes to develop tourism of Dong Van Rocky Plateau. Coming to this festival, you not only enjoy “Khen” dances but also join in some interesting folk games such as: pushing stick, beating ball, fighting Nightingale, tug, throwing “Con”,… Furthermore, you can watch cuisine competition of ethnic groups and taste some special foods like: “Thang Co”, corn wine, Dried meat,… This is also a place to sightsee colorful garment products : skirts, shirts, pants, fabrics, scarves, hats, shoes made by H’Mong, Lo Lo, Tay, Dao,… These products and other ones are performed, sole during this festival. This makes “Khen” festival more active, more colorful, and more attractive.

This festival is really a wonderful occasion for anyone enthusing to explore culture of ethnic minorities in Dong Van Rocky Plateau.

“Thang Co” is traditional and popular dish of Mong people in many mountainous areas of Dong Van. It is made from different parts of beefs and goats including heads, legs, internal organs, and all meat together cooked with herbal and eating with “Men Men”, Corn cakes. “Thang Co” will be delicious more than with a bowl of corn wine. This dish is not only good – smelling but also a subculture of the ethnic group... In the cold fog of the mountainous region, enjoying a hot bowl of dish and a cup of wine is a so great thing. “Thang Co” is an indispensable dish at H’Mong ethnic markets. Eating the dish frequently, people will become addicted in it. The process of cooking this dish is not simple. Firstly, the meat and offal are cut into small pieces. Then all the ingredients are poured in a big pot of water. They are boiled in a pan for instance. We can add the vegetables, spices in this dish. And cooking lasts about half the day

Thanh Van corn wine is made from fermented corn leaves, the source of pure water from the mountains. It is produced by traditional manual methods of local people. Wine specialty Ngo Thanh Van is mountainous, flavor characteristics, good, cool ... Guests from anywhere like to enjoy it. This is also a meaningful gift to give your friends after a trip.

Mint honey is a special honey, only in Dong Van Rocky plateau global geo-park. This kind of honey has delicate taste of mint, much more light sweetness than other honey. Mint honey is said to be special pharmaceutical to strengthen health, curing respiratory illness, digestive troubles. Mint honey is special produce, only in rocky region with average height of 1,200m over sea level.

According to ancient experiences, hint honey can also cure obesity, anxiety, dry cough and laryngitis. Mint honey can be bactericide, curing burned. Especially, mint honey of high land can be used to wipe furrow, soften skin and make skin ruddy.

Dried beef is a kind of unique reserved food of ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous area of Ha Giang province in general and of Dong Van district in particular. With local people and tourists, dried beef has become a special food that any visitor arriving to this area wants to buy as a gift along with mint honey and corn wine.

However, to make a pure kilogram of dried beef like the local people's one, we need to prepare beef which is thigh meat, bright red, select spices such as: salt, fresh garlic, ginger. We have to mix spices suitably. The upland dried beef has shiny brown, a thin layer of sooty around the outer surface, and it is smoky, tough, fragrant.

After 15 days of hanging above the stove, the dried beef can be processed to eat.

Dried buffalo is special food in the meals of Black Thai. This meat is usually made from muscle of buffaloes and cows freely on the northwest mountains. When making it, people cut meat into pieces with the grain then smoked by charcoal from the mountains. With the dried buffalo, the flavor of smoke is almost intact. The processing techniques are traditional secret but products are quite homogeneous. People use some spices such as pepper, ginger, especially “Mac Khen”- a type of forest pepper of northwest upland ethnic minorities.

You can contemplate the spices in each meat. Dried meat still retains the flavor characteristics, especially, the sweetness of the meat. When people often shred with the grain, it can eat immediately or use with corn wine. This dish is made completely natural, so it can reserve about 1 month.

In Dong Van, there are many unique dishes that visitors cannot forget. Bitter porridge or “Au Tau” porridge is special dish. Tourists can enjoy all flavors in a bowl of porridge: flavors of “Au Tau”, leaf spices… Bowl of “Au Tau” porridge looks very attractive by the harmony between rice, herbs, meat… Cooking “Au Tau” porridge is not simple. “Au Tau” after washing in the water, it is stewed during 4 hours. Glutinous rice mixed with some rice then soak into stewed water of pig’s trotters and “Au Tau”. Add a little spice. The porridge has bitter taste so that people call bitter porridge. Many people come to Dong Van, if they have been enjoying once they will seek to eat again. “Au Tau” porridge is not only the normal dish but also a tonic medicine to cure sick. Bitter porridge in Dong Van has had all time in the year, but it sold only at night. In the winter, sitting in a warm space and enjoying the “Au Tau” porridge is exciting and suitable for people who love exploring new things.
