Trip/Social Reports: (included in events report)
Gavin spoke on Steve Carlin’s Corner Country trip. Gary Lees spoke on Watagans trip. Three vehicles from Port 4WD Club in attendance.
Disappointing that only 3 members were in attendance as a fair bit of work went into planning the trip. Quite a lot of rain during the weekend, mainly in the evenings, but ground dried out quickly. Heather Pead gave report for the weekend. Raining fairly heavily on arrival Friday evening, but fine on Saturday morning. Saturday drove to 5 lookouts along top of range, including views to power station, Lake Macquarie and surrounding hinterland. Tracks were originally developed from old bullock tracks. Lunch back at camp followed by more challenging 4WDing in the afternoon. Hosts had prepared roast Pork, Lamb & vegies for dinner. Sunday morning was foggy, with a drive to highest point in the local area that was used by the US Army during WW2. Some more good 4WDing and back to camp for lunch before packing up and heading home. Thanks to Central Coast 4WD Club and Gary Lees for putting on a great trip.

TRIP REPORT Watagans Interclub Trip with the Central Coast 4WD Club
We arrived Friday Evening 8pm at the Casuarina Camp Watagans National Park in very heavy rain which continued throughout the night. Saturday morning was nice and clear. We all made ourselves known to the members of the Central Coast 4WD club and then
headed out for the morning led by Tony Clark. We drove along the top of the ranges to five different lookouts including looking east out over Lake Macquarie, Cooranbong and 3 Power Stations. Then to the west overlooking some secluded valleys with cleared and prosperous looking farmland. At the Boarding House Picnic Area we walked
down a track to the Boarding House Dam which was built in 1952. It’s got to be the cutest dam I’ve seen. The picnic area was named after the boarding house which accommodated the largest and longest serving logging camp in the area. Early roads in the mountains were development from bullock tracks used to extract logs from 1820’s. We then travelled back to camp for lunch.
15
The afternoon presented more 4Wdriving with a couple of interesting uphill manoeuvres over large sandstone formations.
Back to camp where we were treated to spit roast pork and lamb with camp oven veggies.
Sunday morning we drove up to the fire tower at Mt
Warramalong which is the highest point in the area, it was used by the Americans in WW2 for radar surveillance.
We weren’t alone up there, a red bellied black snake was lying out in the open waiting for the sun to warm him up.
Bob Montgomery took over leading at this stage, where we then drove through more waterholes and washaways then headed back to camp for lunch and
packing up.
The Central Coast 4WD members were all really friendly. There was an open invitation to come back for their Christmas in July party at the same campground.
Hopefully we can continue to exchange hospitality
with them and show them more of our area. They all made comment how impressive the Swans Crossing trip was.
Many thanks to Gary for helping organise the weekend!
Brilliant report Heather and many thanks again Gary for organising the trip!

Trip Report
4600 KMS IN 11 DAYS For weeks before we headed off Stephen kept an eye on the outback travel warnings.
At one point the Birdsville Inside Track was closed, Cordillo Downs Road was closed, Walkers
Crossing Track, closed. Arrabury Road and the Birdsville Track, all closed.
Rain up north had impacted greatly on the areas we planned to visit. However as our departure
date approached the tracks were drying out and one by one they all became officially ‘Open to
4WD’ with the warning ‘Beware ponded sections’.
So, after 12 long years, we were finally off to see how much Birdsville & Cameron Corner had
changed – as it turned out, not much at all, but what a great time we had finding out.
Departing from the ‘donut’ with Ian in his Triton we made short work of the 1200kms to
Charleville – spending Wed night in a roadside rest area at Delungra, near Warialda. Arriving a day
earlier than expected, meeting Gavin, Janet, Jacinta & Hugh who had travelled west from
Brisvegas, on Thursday afternoon @
Charleville Bush Caravan Park. The park is
still relatively new, the amenities sparkling &
spacious, with ample space on the all the
sites for even the biggest rig. It’s the very
first Caravan Park we’ve seen that is actually
signposted “non-smokers only” !!
Our camp hosts, Graham & Deb, dropped by
for Happy Hour both evenings we stayed and
we joined them for the Charleville ‘Fires &
Floods’ tour. It seems what hadn’t burnt
down at some point in time had been under
water in a flood over the years, as the Warrego River bursts its’ banks. Friday night we visited a
Bilby information session at the National Park information centre and we were able to view some
very active Bilbys, who, we learnt, breed like rabbits but are in danger of extinction mainly due to
the areas’ feral cat problem.
Saturday saw us head further west following the Diamantina Developmental Road. At lunch we met
up with James, Kyah & Lochie at Lake Houdraman near Quilpie. They had only left Port the
previous morning!
Camping on the corner of the Birdsville
Developmental Road, the kids made sure they
weren’t forgotten, leaving a message in the
roadside gravel for the Easter Bunny. After
the flies went to bed at sundown we were
entertained with some spectacular star gazing.
Well, the Easter Bunny did find us all – even
though we were quite literally ‘in the middle of
nowhere’ – just like Santa, this mystical gift
giving creature left goodies for everyone.
17
With the kids up and buzzing on their
chocolate high, we headed out early taking a
planned short diversion to Haddon Corner,
the corner where SA & QLD state lines
meet, in Sturt Stoney Desert. Sharing our
morning tea with the flies, we watched as
some tiny Zebra finches made nests in the
roof over the picnic table.
Steve & I, along with James and kids, made
an on the spot decision to take the long way
through Cordillo Downs Station via Arrabury
Road back to Birdsville. Along our route we stopped off to inspect the massive historic Cordillo
Downs Woolshed. The woolshed is the largest in Australia and saw over 70,000 sheep sheared
annually in the early 1900’s - Cattle have since replaced sheep on the station, being less prone to
wild dog attacks, and the woolshed is sadly falling into disrepair. Further along Cordillo Downs
Road we strolled around the poignant crumbling ruins of Cadelga Outstation while the corellas
screeched at the waterhole nearby.
Cadelga ruins
Cordillo Downs shearing shed
Helping some fellow travellers repair a tyre along the way, James and Stephen shared their
knowledge - advising them to reduce tyre pressures on these roads strewn with sharp little gibber
rocks – they were running 50psi – we were at 28psi !!
18
Gavin & Ian, without the advantage of long range fuel tanks, chose the direct route - back to
Birdsville Developmental Road, a great dirt road which is travelled very comfortably at 90kmph,
straight in to Birdsville, where they passed a pleasant afternoon enjoying several beers in the
shade at Birdsville Caravan Park.
Birdsville’s Pub is just about as much an
Australian icon as the Opera House or the
Harbour Bridge – the advantage being it has
cold beer (not cheap though!) and flies are
discouraged. After a long drive and a quick
shower the pub was a welcome refuge from
the flies and the 33 degree heat.
Of course no trip to Birdsville would be
complete without a trip out to conquer the
‘Big Red’ sand dune at the eastern most edge
of the Simpson Desert. Challenging
themselves and their vehicles, the guys all
played a little on Big Red before we headed
westward, over another 50 majestic red
dunes, to Eyre Creek for morning tea. At the
crest of each dune we could see the track
running for miles into the desert – dune after
dune.
Our second night in Birdsville saw us at the pub again for
beer and dinner. Stephen had cleaned and regreased the
Kimberley bearings after losing a dust cap the previous day,
James, Janet and I had done the washing, Gavin had fixed a
loose hinge on his Ultimate, not too sure what Ian had been up
to but he assured me he had earned his beer as well.
Starting south to Innamincka along the infamous Birdsville
Track (which, except for the dirt, is better than most roads
in Port Macquarie) we stopped for a leg stretch at the
intersection of the Walker’s Crossing Track. While chatting
and snacking, apparently a few in our group observed some
strange and miraculous spectacle streaking through the sky –
a shooting star @ 11am?? UFOs in the desert?? Who’d have
thought?? Janet & I weren’t convinced…
19
Travelling south along Walker’s Crossing Track
we soon realised why it had been closed only
days before – lots of ponded water covering
the track and lots of hastily formed side
tracks to avoid it. Emus darted across our
path and as we headed further south, through
the gas & oil fields, roads headed off in every
which direction – the HEMA app on the IPad
was worth its weight in gold.
Cooper Creek loomed and we were in
Innamincka.
Finding a handy, shady, riverside spot on the Town Common we shared a beer with the flies while
the kids had a swim then headed up to the Innamincka Hotel for dinner.
After dinner we sat and gazed into the sky til late, again, the star show was amazing.
Cooper Creek was alive with birdlife at 6am so we were all up and about early in an attempt to
beat the flies to breakfast. As the temperature nudged 36 degrees we revelled in the aircon of
our vehicles and set out past the huge Nappa Merrie station to the infamous Dig Tree of Burke &
Wills fame.
Completing a circuit, rather than backtracking, we took the ‘Bypass Track’ which runs off the
Arrabury Road through Innamincka Regional Reserve and back into Innamincka, collecting
firewood along the way. A lot of the landscape appearing like an old Western movie back drop,
hues of red & orange bleeding into the white peaks of the hills. The deep red of the gibber rock
giving way to white sandy stretches along the track, rough in places but ever scenic. Not too sure
what the cows eat out there but they are made of tough stuff. Nothing green to be seen for
miles! At the Cooper Creek causeway we all stopped to observe the birds and be amazed at the
amount of water passing below the causeway into the muddy creek mainstream.
Stephen & I opted for a sunset cruise on Cooper Creek and we were thoroughly enthralled by the
wildlife and colours along the banks
and in the tree tops as the sun sank
over the river. Our guide was very
interesting and had lots of local
tales to tell – turns out he was the
hotel manager! No wonder he had
so many stories. After a visit to
the $2 shower block and not
touching the hot water – cold was
just fine – we were greeted by a
lovely campfire upon returning to
camp.
By now it was Thursday and it really
was time to start heading east –
damn that four letter word – WORK !!
We headed down the Old Strzelecki Track, turning left at Merty Merty Station and towards
Cameron Corner. This took us across the gentle sand dunes of the Strzelecki Desert, over & over
& over again! For those who’ve been to Cameron Corner before you’ll be sad that there is no longer
a yellow bus to stop and sticky beak at… The station owner was sick of the rubbish being left
20
behind by visitors so he buried the bus (or so the story goes). Needless to say there isn’t really
many land marks to stop and observe along these outback routes, so it’s a shame, we had no real
place to pull up and have morning tea! Bugger! Don’t get me wrong - the scenery is amazing and
beautiful in its’ own way, but it’s always good to get out of the car, have a natter and check
something out when you’re on a long trip like this.
At least there is a tree (for shade#*) and a
toilet at Cameron Corner. Being the junction
of the NSW, QLD & SA borders we all took
turns at standing in three states at once and
grinning like clowns at the camera. Most of
our group chose to take the easy option for
lunch and enjoyed pies at Cameron Corner
Store.
Then we were off through the Dingo Fence gate,
back into NSW and over more sand dunes before
reaching our overnight stop, Tibooburra. Here we
spread the love and kept the economy going –
refuelled all the vehicles, stayed in the caravan
park, had pre dinner drinks at the Family Hotel,
dinner at the Tibooburra Hotel. You can imagine how
excited the kids were when it was explained to them
that they’d had breakfast in SA, lunch in QLD and
now dinner in NSW!!
Rising early we attended the town’s sombre, if
somewhat short, ANZAC service in the predawn
darkness.
21
An uneventful, yet still scenic, drive saw us set up for the night 6km from Brewarrina - a great
free camp in a riverside reserve. Four Mile Campground, with toilets and cold showers, was a great
find by the Sharp family a few years earlier – there are some lovely spots right on the river with
beautiful river gums providing plenty of firewood - we highly recommend it.
Heading further east, Saturday morning we were breath tested as we left Brewarrina, all except
Gavin who was waved through. Taking some gravel back roads we were pulled up by a police
roadblock as we left the highway south of Narrabri. Apparently protesters had been causing
havoc around the CSG mines and the police were diverting traffic away from the area. Stephen
spoke nicely to the young lady officer and they granted our group permission to travel the
shortcut through to Manilla. ‘Just don’t go on the mine road or you WILL be arrested’ were our
instructions. We didn’t go near the mine road!
Saturday night saw us settle in at Bendemeer Hotel. The food was great, and VERY reasonable,
rooms were comfortable and newly renovated. Gavin arranged with some former members of the
club – the McGregors, who now reside near Tamworth – to join us for dinner. Catching up and
swapping ‘yeahs’ was a great way to spend the last night of our journey.
Unfortunately, during the night, some low life person decided that our LED light bar would look
better on their vehicle than ours – and proceeded to steal it off our bulbar in the hotel carpark.
Not a nice end to a great trip…
Over the mountain and into Wauchope saw the skies open so we quickly we said our farewells at
the donut and were home for Sunday lunch.
Thank you to all who shared their company & knowledge with us on this trip. It was a long way in a
short time as we had to work with the limited time we could afford away from our business. More
time would’ve been nice, but we didn’t we feel rushed or hurried at all and we thoroughly enjoyed
the time away.
