People from all strata of the community in- cluding children and women partici- pated during the colorful and joyous festival. A colourful cultural program was hosted by the Embassy. The enthusiastic Bangladesh commu- nity people participated and enjoyed the traditional celebration. Chargé d’affaires, a.i. at the Bangladesh Embassy S. M. Mahbubul Alam wel- comed the guests and thanked the performers. Mentionable, the Bengali New Year begins at the dawn, which is related to Solar Calendar, and the day is marked with singing, processions, and fairs. Traditionally in Bangladesh, businesses start this day with a new ledger, clearing out the old. People of Bangladesh enjoy a national holi- day on Poila Boishakh. All over the country people can enjoy fairs and festivals. Singers perform traditional songs welcoming the New Year. Like other festivals of the country, the day is marked by visiting relatives, friends and neighbors. People prepare spe- cial dishes for their guests. The festiv- ities from the deep heartland of Ben- gal have now evolved to become vast events both in the rural areas and cit- ies across the country irrespective of religious belief.
