Banksia Bits Colo Vale Public School Excellence, innovation & success in a caring community Week 7 Term 2 3rd June, 2015 From the Principal’s desk … If you’re shopping at Mittagong Marketplace this week, then keep an eye out for the display showcas- ing our wonderful Eco Garden for World Environ- ment Week. A big thanks to Miriam Bos, for not only producing the display panel but also for her tireless work in the garden. This week, I want to highlight all those parents, carers and community members who give so generously of their time for the benefit of our children and our school. We have many volunteers who come in on a regular basis to help with reading, with sport, with music, with craft, with helping in the library, the canteen, the garden, with fund raising, with selling uniforms and with organising P&C events. But we always need more people to lend a hand! I know that we are all incredibly busy these days, but I urge everyone to really think about what you may be able to offer our school community. Let’s all work together in a spirit of generosity, cooperation and commitment to make Colo Vale the best school for all our children. And in the meantime … thank you, thank you, thank you! We are especially lucky because it is really due to just one parent, Miriam Bos, who comes along every Monday to weed and plant and prune and water. Miriam also harvests vegetables and herbs and cooks with the children. Together with Mrs Wil- liams, she also runs the Gardening Club every Monday at lunchtime to which all children are invited. It would be wonderful if a few more parents could also help out. Perhaps, you could come along sometime during the school day on a Monday when Miriam is there. If another day suits better, then wander up to the Garden and do a bit of weeding before you pick up your children, for example. Unlike in the Canteen, you are more than wel- come to take your toddlers along with you when you are working in the Garden. Could you spare just 4 days a year to volunteer at our school? Read on … This week a note is going home in which we are proposing a new way of helping out in the Canteen. It’s an idea that I got from Leichhardt PS where my grandchildren are in Kinder and Year 2. My daughter has found it really manageable with her pre-schooler to be able to help out just once each term. So we are going to see if it might be possible here at Colo Vale for every class to be respon- sible for just one week a term to provide helpers for the Canteen. This would mean that each class would aim to provide a couple of helpers for Wednesday and a couple of helpers for Friday in “their” week. Let’s give it a try and see if we can really help our Canteen to provide a great service to our children and to raise extra funds for our school.

Excellence, innovation & success in a caring community

Week 7 Term 2 3rd June, 2015

From the Principal’s desk …

If you’re shopping at Mittagong Marketplace this week, then keep an eye out for the display showcas-ing our wonderful Eco Garden for World Environ-ment Week. A big thanks to Miriam Bos, for not only producing the display panel but also for her tireless work in the garden.

This week, I want to highlight all those parents,

carers and community members who give so generously of their time

for the benefit of our children and our school.

ECO GARDEN – our treasure

We are SO lucky to have our Eco Garden. We are especially lucky because it is really due to just one parent, Miriam Bos, who comes along every Monday to weed and plant and prune and water. Miriam also harvests vegetables and herbs and cooks with the children. Together with Mrs Wil-liams, she also runs the Gardening Club every Monday at lunchtime to which all children are invited.

It would be wonderful if a few more

parents could also help out. Perhaps, you could come along sometime during the school day on a Monday when Miriam is there. If another day suits better, then wander up to the Garden and do a bit of weeding before you pick up your children, for example.

Unlike in the Canteen, you are more than wel-come to take your toddlers along with you when you are working in the Garden.

Could you spare just 4 days a year to volunteer at

our school? Read on …

This week a note is going home in which we are proposing a new way of helping out in the Canteen. It’s an idea that I got from Leichhardt PS where my grandchildren are in Kinder and Year 2. My daughter has found it really manageable with her pre-schooler to be able to help out just once each term. So we are going to see if it might be possible here at Colo Vale for every class to be respon-sible for just one week a term to provide helpers for the Canteen. This would mean that each class would aim to provide a couple of helpers for Wednesday and a couple of helpers for Friday in “their” week.

Let’s give it a try and see if we can really help our Canteen to provide a great service to our children and to raise extra funds for our school.

The automatic watering system hooked up!

Laying the paths

We finally completed the new garden bed and tested the new

watering system successfully! This enclosed garden bed was

built by 5/6F with significant help from Quentin Woods.

Our pictures are up at Highlands Marketplace this week as

part of the Council Environment Week display.

We have devised a system of bungy chord/ elastic to hold our

netting in place in the raised garden beds and we are suc-

ceeding in deterring the deer and wallabies.

The garden is slowing down but we planted some winter

crops today – broccoli, cauliflower, snow peas and more

lettuce. We also planted two donated raspberry bushes.

introducing the Kindness Ripple Effect Program

to Colo Vale School.

The Kindness Ripple Effect Program is about

Cultivating a positive and inclusive school

community to reduce anti-social behaviour

by bringing out the best in everyone,

emphasizing the importance of showing

kindness and respect towards others.

Children learning about their own and others

emotional needs, which helps maintain

optimistic classroom environments where everyone

feels like they are supported and belong. This

encourages students to apply values like respect,

generosity, empathy, gratitude and resilience in

their daily interactions.

Last Wednesday Colo Vale joined over 3,000 other libraries in NSW sharing the

Notes and Money due

Notes will go out this week for the District Athletics Carnival, congratulations everyone who made the team. It's on Friday of Week 2, Term 3. Not long now for Daniel Wood and Sebastian Hernandez as they prepare to represent the South Coast Region at the State Championships. Daniel is playing open Rugby League at Woolooware from the 16-18 June, and Sebastian is playing Football at Bathurst (brrr) from 23-25 June. Great work Daniel and Sebastian in making the teams, and good luck. Nathan Hansen and Joshua Thorne finally got to represent the zone at the Regional touch football trials last week, after some postponements due to the wet weather. They didn't quite make it into the regional team, but both played well and gave it their best shot. Well done Nathan and Joshua. Finally, good luck to our 2 Rugby League teams, one from Years 3 and 4, and the other from Years 5 and 6, playing in the Southern Highlands/ Wollondilly All Schools Gala day at Thirlmere Sportsground tomorrow (Thursday). Thanks to Mr Freeman for organising our teams for this event, and to the parents who are transporting their children, and in particular to the parents who are coaching and managing the teams. Go Teams! Mr Berry From the Sports desk
