It’s that time of year again, when we collect food to pass on to those in need over Christmas. So pop an extra tin or packet of food (eg tinned vegies, fruit etc)
in the shopping trolley next time you’re out shopping, and send it to school with your child. Each class will have a Christmas hamper box to collect donations. ALSO, Mrs Zantis is once again collecting dog and cat food for the animals in the pound. She will leave a basket outside her room for donations. Thanks for your help. Mr Berry

STUDENT WELFARE
STUDENT WELFARE : Adapted excerpt from Happy Families.com.au
Here are 10 reasons you’re probably doing a better job as a parent than you think:
You listen when your child wants your attention—This may be the most important thing we can do to be good
parents. Our willingness to acknowledge our children, hear them, and show them that they are worthy of our
attention is central to their development of resilience.
Showing that you care - We show we care by hugging our children, telling them they matter to us,
paying attention to their stories, and being there for them.
Setting limits & providing healthy boundaries - While most of us can improve the way we set limits,
most parents are making a significant effort to set boundaries for their children. While too many rules
leads to too many problems, research tells us that our children thrive and feel safe when they know
what is ok to do, and what is not.
Showing an interest in their friends - Our children feel validated when they see us taking an interest
in their relationships. If you can name your children’s besties (and maybe even their parents),
you’re probably doing ok.
Being interested in their schooling - Children do better at school when parents are invested in their
academic success (so long as we don’t over-play it and get too controlling).
This is especially the case in high school.
You give them whatever extra-curricular activities you can afford - Do children need extra-curricular
activities to thrive? No they don’t. However, most parents recognise that sport, music, art, drama,
science, church, or any other extra-curricular activity their children can participate in has the
potential to enrich their lives, improve their academic performance, give them opportunities for
growth, and expand their social circles. And most parents are stretching themselves to give their
children those chances – because they love their children, and because they’re doing
the best they can for them.
You console your child when s/he is upset - While there are some parents who get mad or brush their
children off when they’re upset, most parents are eager to embrace their children and show
compassion and understanding when they are emotional, struggling, or stressed.
Reading to them & with them—The positive outcomes related to this one single activity are
numerous. Most parents relish the chance to read with their children (especially their younger
children) as regularly as they’re able. Once your child is of reading age, ask them to read to you, as
you help them with any words or sounds they may be struggling with. This is a good habbit to get
into with your child, as it will set them up for good reading outcomes for their schooling & lifetime.
Spending extra time with them, just because you want to - after school having some fun or quiet time
just before bed as you lay with heads together on the pillow, bike rides or stroll through the park.
Enjoying being with your children and finding extra time to be together because you love them.
Say sorry-When you get it wrong & do what you can to preserve and strengthen the relationship.
Tell them you love them regularly, and they can feel it. Speaking more kindly & calmly- Major on
majors & minor on minors…If your children feel your love and know it is sincere and unconditional
they are experiencing one of the most vital protective factors for a resilient life that you can offer.
Wishing you all a happy Christmas & New Year
Fun & safe holidays - See you in 2016!

Music at CVPS during 2015 2015 has once again been a marvellous year in the continued development of our music
program here at Colo Vale PS.
In addition to the regular classroom programs focused on recorder playing, dancing, singing,
playing, composing, listening to and appreciating music there has also been the continuation of
our extra-curricular programs. Band, recorder, choral and string groups have met regularly
throughout the year learning repertoire and preparing for performances.
Alex Zachary tutors the violin and cello players whose talents were showcased recently in a
wonderful combined Strings Concert held here in our school hall.
Zoe Andrews, Ryley Gillen and Melissa Reyder come each week to teach flute, trumpet,
trombone, clarinet and saxophone. We are grateful to these music tutors who travel out to our
school and not only share their expertise with our children but also make the whole Band
Program possible.
We are also indebted to all those who over the years have become benefactors of the music
program here at Colo Vale PS. This year we were fortunate to receive a box of music stands
from Chatswood Public School. We were on the brink of needing to purchase additional stands
so this particular gift saved us a great deal of money.
But perhaps most significantly of all has been the gift of a new drum kit from the Tickner family.
Blake Tickner from 4/5S is our current drummer in the band and he was first encouraged to play
by his grandfather who is a very experienced and skilled drummer. Blake is a committed
member of our band which, without a drummer, would be very much worse off.
Earlier this year, the Tickner family made a most generous gift of this beautiful
drum kit which has graced our stage ever since. Such commitment to our school
and to the music program in particular is something for which I am grateful more
than words can express. It is this spirit of collaboration that is the hallmark of a
great school and it provides a fine example to all of us.
Thank you, Tickner Family!
Just to remind you how busy we have all been (and why we are all a bit weary!),
I am including a brief list of the “music events” for the year 2015.
Band performances at the End-of-Term Assemblies
Band performance at the Anzac Day ceremony during the laying of the wreaths
Music Visit with combined Choral and Band items from Bowral HS
Cluster Rehearsal for Opera House Recorders here at CVPS for schools from the Highlands
and Goulburn regions
Festival of Instrumental Music performance for the Recorder Group in the Sydney Opera
House
Band performance at the Kinder Expo
Band performance at the Bowral’s Got Talent Music Night at Bowral High School during
Education Week
Band performance at the Senior Concert
Strings Concert
Chatswood Public School’s visit with a combined Band performance
Music Night with all musicians performing
So, thank you, thank you one and all for your continued commitment to the music program here
at CVPS. I wish you all a happy festive season and a rejuvenating summer holiday, Anne Donaldson
