We value and acvely encourage our community to take on meaningful roles. Your thoughts and opinions are acvely sought. Remember to pay your $1 immediately before the meeng, so that you can vote! Planning for Teacher Parent Individual Interviews: End of Term 1 Our teachers will be conducng interviews during the last three weeks of Term 1. I acvely encourage parents to plan to aend together if at all possible. This year, we are requesng parents, to discuss their child’s needs, their class goals, and then to set a parent goal for their child. The parent goal, maybe the same or different as a classroom teacher goal. The purpose of this goal seng, is to share a joint plan and goal progress, to teach our children to set, plan and achieve goals in life. The goals themselves, are meant to be very praccal and straight forward for parents to help with their child’s learning or social skills. As a community we are seng out to be ‘aspiraonal’. We are constantly working together to improve each child’s learning. Our children need to be showing progress over me. What could a parent goal look like? Some examples may include: My child will read 4 (or more) mes a week with a parent or brother /sister. My child can spell these tricky words and use them in their wring. My child can punctuate a sentence and correct their spelling accurately. My child will know their mes tables and use them correctly. What happens next? Each semester, teachers share a wrien report with parents. I ask that parents, also share their child’s progress with the classroom teacher at the end of each term. We are working on a simple way of doing this. There is no pass or fail! This is about working together, to help your child learn and succeed. So, start thinking and talking with your child about something your child or both of you would like to develop and improve. Great news! Music Program Has Started Thank you Mrs Donaldson and our Music Tutors for beginning our Music Program for 2016. I acvely encourage our families to become involved in our music tuion and band program. This year, our school has been once again selected by audion to parcipate in the Opera House Recorder and Violin Program. Well done! Colo Vale Public School Facebook Page: Up and Running! Parents are invited to ‘Like us on facebook’. This will help us share that just in me informaon. If you haven't already, I encourage you to pop a facebook app on your phone. Student Wellbeing: Students are acvely taught social skills through our ‘You Can Do It” program. From me to me our students are learning the difference between a game such as ‘play fighng’, which is discouraged, to what they will describe as bullying. Student play is redirected and refocused into appropriate games. True bullying occurs, when inappropriate behaviour is targeted at the same person and repeated. All children are instructed to report any concerns to a teacher. Acon will always be taken to resolve any concerns. Parents are always welcome to contact the school.

Excellence, innovation & success in a caring community

Week 6 Term 1 March 2 2016

From the Principal’s Desk……………

Class of the Week: KP Mrs Provino is thrilled with KP’s learning and progress with L3, Learning, Literacy and Language Program.

Invitation to attend our P&C Annual General Meeting: Monday 7 March, 7:00 pm in the Staffroom I am excited to extend an invitation to our new parents and friendly families to come along and join our team of dedicated parents. We value and actively encourage our community to take on meaningful roles. Your thoughts and opinions are actively sought. Remember to pay your $1 immediately before the meeting, so that you can vote!

Planning for Teacher Parent Individual Interviews: End of Term 1 Our teachers will be conducting interviews during the last three weeks of Term 1. I actively encourage parents to plan to attend together if at all possible. This year, we are requesting parents, to discuss their child’s needs, their class goals, and then to set a parent goal for their child. The parent goal, maybe the same or different as a classroom teacher goal. The purpose of

this goal setting, is to share a joint plan and goal progress, to teach our children to set, plan and achieve goals in life. The goals themselves, are meant to be very practical and straight forward for parents to help with their child’s learning or social skills. As a community we are setting out to be ‘aspirational’. We are constantly working together to improve each child’s learning. Our children need to be showing progress over time.

What could a parent goal look like? Some examples may include:

My child will read 4 (or more) times a week with a parent or brother /sister.

My child can spell these tricky words and use them in their writing.

My child can punctuate a sentence and correct their spelling accurately.

My child will know their times tables and use them correctly.

What happens next? Each semester, teachers share a written report with parents.

I actively encourage our families to become involved in our music tuition and band program. This year, our school has been once again selected by audition to participate in the Opera House Recorder and Violin Program. Well done!

Student Wellbeing: Students are actively taught social skills through our ‘You Can Do It” program. From time to time our students are learning the difference between a game such as ‘play fighting’, which is discouraged, to what they will describe as bullying. Student play is redirected and refocused into appropriate games. True bullying occurs, when inappropriate behaviour is targeted at the same person and repeated. All children are instructed to report any concerns to a teacher. Action will always be taken to resolve any concerns. Parents are always welcome to contact the school.

School Jargon Wondering why your kids talk about playing under the school COLA? Baffled at parent-teacher discussions about KLA's?

You're not alone! We’re well at aware that sometimes it appears that we have our own language, so we've developed

this list of common abbreviations or terms to make the world inside our school gate seem a little more familiar. See the list at :

Punctuation Mark Explanation

. A full stop should be used to end a sentence. The full stop indicates that a point has been made and that you are about to move on to further explanations or a related point. Examples: The house is made of bricks. On the weekend I went shopping with my mum and we had lots of fun together.

? The question mark simply indicates that a sentence is asking a question. Examples: Is it playtime yet? When are we going to the zoo to see the penguins?

! An exclamation mark indicates strong feeling within a sentence, such as fear, anger or love. It is also used to accentuate feeling within the written spoken word. Examples: Stop! Police! The bus is early today!

“ “ Quotation or speech marks are used to mark out speech or when quoting someone else’s speech. Examples: "I hope you will be here," John said. Bill said, "That job we started last April is done."

From the Sports Desk

Congratulations to all of our students who represented the school at the District Swimming Carnival on Monday 22nd February at Bowral Pool. We had many good results, and 4 students qualified for the district team to go to the South Coast Regional Swimming Championships at Dapto Pool on Tuesday 8 March. Well done Floyd Linsley, Michal Krueger, Maya Bos-Woods and Janayha Holdsworth, and good luck next Tuesday.

District trials coming up - Boys and girls football 7.3.16. Boys and girls hockey 10.3.16. Rugby League 11's, opens and Rugby Union 4.4.16. Boys and girls touch 23.3.16. Please see Mr Berry if you are in Year 5 or 6 and play these sports regularly and want to try out for the district team.

Congratulations to Matthew Bailey, who went along the AFL district trials and was successful in making the district AFL team. Matthew will compete in the zone trials on 11 March. Good Luck!

The Hindmarsh Cup and Noble Challenge Rugby League 7's competitions are on this Thursday out at Robertson. We have entered 1 Hindmarsh Team (Years 3 and 4) and 2 Noble Challenge teams (Years 5 and 6). We also have 4 girls going along to play in a girls comp on the day. Good luck to all the teams, and thanks to the parents who are taking their children and helping with coaching the teams on the day.

If anyone has a school footy uniform still at home from last year, and you're not playing this year, please send it back to school asap.

Well done to the stage 3 and 2 classes, who have been doing their sport on a Friday afternoon with the help of some Bowral High School students. It has been a great success so far.

Hill Top are entering an AFL team into the Paul Kelly Cup, but don't quite have enough students and have asked if any Colo Vale

students are interested in joining their team to boost their numbers. Any Year 5 or 6 students who are interested let Mr Berry know asap.

The School Cross Country will be held in Week 10, and the District Cross Country out at Robertson is on 5 May in Term 2.

Finally, don't forget that if you shop at Amart Sports and have an Amart customer card linked to Colo Vale Public School, we receive 5% of every purchase as a credit, to be spent on equipment from the store. Last year we were able to spend around $800 through this scheme, so thank you to Amart,

STUDENT WELFARE

Adapted from www.webmd.com/parenting/features/brain-foods-for-children

BRAIN FOODS:

1. Salmon: canned salmon mixed with reduced-fat mayo or non-fat plain yogurt, raisins, chopped celery, and carrots. Serve on whole-grain bread which is also a brain food or make salmon patties!

2. Eggs- good source of protein & the yolks are also packed with choline, which helps memory development. Egg burrito, scrambled eggs or make your own egg McMuffin - a fried egg on top of a toasted English muffin, with a

slice of low-fat cheese.

3. Peanut Butter : Providing you’re not allergic to them, peanuts and peanut butter are a good source of vitamin E, a potent antioxidant that protects nervous membranes -- plus thiamine to help the brain and nervous system use

glucose for energy. For a twist on an old favourite, make a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Dip apple slices or celery sticks in peanut butter. Or, top off your favourite salad with a handful of peanuts.

NOT FOR SCHOOL -REMEMBER THE NO NUT RULE!

4. Whole Grains: The brain needs a constant supply of glucose and whole grains provide that in spades. The fibre

helps regulate the release of glucose into the body, Whole grains also have B-vitamins, which nourish a healthy nervous system. Make sure a whole grain is the first ingredient listed in whole grain cererals. Try whole wheat

couscous for dinner with cranberries, or low-fat popcorn for a fun snack. Switch to whole-grain bread, tortillas and chips for sandwiches, quesadillas, wraps, and snacks.

5. Oats/Oatmeal: the most familiar hot cereals for kids and a very nutritious “grain for the brain” Oats provide

excellent energy or fuel for the brain that kids need first thing in the morning. Loaded with fibre, oats keep a child’s brain fed all morning at school. Oats also are good sources of vitamin E, B vitamins

potassium and zinc which make our bodies and brains function at full capacity. Tasty additions are applesauce and cinnamon, dried fruit and soy milk, sliced almonds and a

drizzle of honey, fresh banana and a dash of nutmeg with skim milk.

6. Berries: Strawberries, cherries, blueberries, blackberries. In general, the more intense the colour, the more nutrition in the berries. Berries boast high levels of

antioxidants, especially vitamin C, which may help prevent cancer. Add berries to veggies that may need a flavour boost. Add berries to yogurt, hot or cold cereal, or

dips & desserts. 7. Beans have energy from protein and complex carbs and fiber -plus lots of vitamins

and minerals. These are an excellent brain food since they keep a child's energy and

thinking level at peak all afternoon if they enjoy them with lunch. Kidney and pinto beans contain more omega 3 fatty acids than other beans specifically ALA, another of the omega-3’s important for

brain growth and function. Sprinkle beans over salad and top with salsa. Mash vegetarian beans and spread on a tortilla or fill a pita pocket and add shredded lettuce and low-fat cheese. Add beans to spaghetti sauce and salsa.

Infants love mashed beans with applesauce!8. Brain Food: Colourful Veggies-Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin,

carrots, spinach - vegetables with rich, deep colour are the best sources of antioxidants that keep brain cells strong and healthy. Try sweet potato fries or make pumpkin muffins: Baby carrots and tiny tomatoes fit nicely into lunch

bags. Spinach salads with lots of stuff in them like strawberries, mandarin oranges, sliced almonds. Hide all sorts of

chopped veggies into spaghetti sauce, soups, and stews. 9. Milk & Yogurt-Dairy foods are packed with protein and B-vitamins, essential for growth of brain tissue,

neurotransmitters, and enzymes. Milk and yogurt also provide a bigger punch with both protein and carbohydrates -the preferred source of energy for the brain, Low-fat milk over cereal and calcium and vitamin D-fortified juices

are easy ways to get these essential nutrients. Cheese sticks are great snacks. Low-fat yogurt parfaits in a tall glass, layer yogurt with berries -fresh, frozen, or dried and chopped nuts -almonds or walnuts.

10. Lean Beef (or Meat Alternative) Iron is an essential mineral that helps kids stay

energized and concentrate at school. Lean beef is one of the best absorbed sources of iron. Beef also contains zinc, which helps with memory. For vegetarians, black bean and

soy burgers are great iron-rich meatless options. Beans are an important source of non heme iron -- a type of iron that needs

vitamin C to be absorbed. Eat tomatoes, red capsicum, orange juice, strawberries, and

other "Cs" with beans to get the most iron.
