The Archbishop has approved the name of St John Paul II as the name of our new parish and as such we will become St John Paul II Catholic Primary School Banksia Grove. Just like getting married, there are a number of agencies and processes including approval from CEOWA and the Government, to go through before the name is formally changed, but the process has begun. In consultation with the School Board it has been decided that we will begin with the school logo so that a patch can be developed for school uniforms, letterhead etc. and at a later date other changes can be made as are necessary, but the change of name will not have a cost impact on parents. In an effort to broaden the understanding of our new school patron we will be adding information about St John Paul II and his life to our newsletters on a regular basis. Everyone arriving back from the holidays will have noticed a few changes. Most noticeably the very bright and colourfully painted early childhood shed. Thanks to Craig Hughes the undercoat was put on during the holidays which enabled a group of children from Mater Dei and some of our own students to paint the urban art design on the shed. Other changes have included the walkway between the classes finally being completed. It looks fantastic! The paving has all been cleaned, new drink fountains were put in and the road marking on the school site has been renewed. Thank you to all those who are STOPPING at the line at the end of the Kiss and Go and giving way to cars coming down the side of the school. Welcome back to Angela Chamberlain who has returned from maternity leave. Congratulations to Nic Bigwood and his wife on the safe arrival of his new baby girl, Aiya. It seems to be the year of the baby girl! More congratulations to Ryan Clark who successfully completed in the recent long board surfing championships and is now ranked 11th in the world!!!!!! Jess Schofield also gained two firsts in her dancing competitions during the break. You have probably heard that there have been some changes to our timetable this term. Lunch time will now commence forty minutes earlier with the break time being flipped. First the children go out to play and then they come back and eat their lunch. This enables the children to have a quietening down time after their play by sitting and eating lunch. Hopefully it will also mean that the number of lunch boxes, drink bottles and hats being left around the school will be reduced as the children take their bags with them to lunch and put their drink bottle, lunch boxes and hats into their bags before going back to the classrooms. The effectiveness of the process will be reviewed at the end of term. Third term is once again action packed. We are happy to have the Curtin Speech students back with us for the semester. Performing arts is once again a feature with many children across the school being involved in a number of performances. Third term is also a big sporting term culminating with the faction sports carnival at the end of the term. We are happy to welcome Tia and Lara Kallydin, Saskia Henderson and Athonee Evison and their families who have recently joined our school community. God bless Tricia Davis

RELATIONSHIPS AUSTRALIA—WA

Making Stepfamilies Work

Tuesday 4th August x 6 weeks. Couples with children from previous relationships may need strategies. Strategies on communication, agreement on discipline – who spells out the rules and what the rules are – and on handling competing demands. It is just as important for couples to ensure that in a busy week there is time just for each other. For further information please phone 9489 6322

Family Patterns

Thursday 6th August x 6 weeks. Many of our adulthood attitudes, values and beliefs and subsequent behaviors can be traced to what was passed on to us in our formative years. This course investigates this link with our first family, whether our biological family or other family system, e.g. foster or step family. How we communicate, resolve conflict, use anger effectively or not, and how we show affection – all these can be traced to family patterns passed down from generation to generation. For further information please phone 9489 6322

Rock and Water Programme

Saturday 15th August 8.30-12.30. Physical exercises are constantly linked with mental and social skills. The Rock and Water program leads from simple self-defence, boundary and communication exercises to a strong notion of self-confidence. The program offers a framework of exercises and ideas to assist boys and girls to become aware of the purpose and motivation in their life. Topics include: intuition, body language, mental strength, empathic feeling, positive feeling, positive thinking and positive visualising. For further information please phone 9489 6322

Parent Child Connection

Wednesday 26th August x 4 weeks. Raising children should be one of life’s greatest experiences, but as any parent knows, it is not an easy task. People with children under ten are invited to this four-week course to learn new skills, feel better about their parenting and gain confidence. For further information please phone 9489 6322
