THE PASTOR’S PAGE As the last vestiges of summer give way to fall and colorful flowerbeds and produc-tive gardens give way to fallen leaves and pumpkins, along comes October. Alt-hough some of us are already counting the days until Christmas, most of us are more aware of Halloween.
I loved Halloween as a child. We would go to a friend’s house in town and roam the streets collecting candy until the whistle blew at the fire station, signaling the end of trick-or-treating (and the beginning of a hot dog and apple cider celebration at the Fire Hall). Later we would dump our bags of candy, sort through them and trade for the ones we liked best. The aroma of burning leaves still conjures up those images for me.
There is much that is “unholy” about Halloween, but I always see in it a reflection of the very core of the Christian hope: standing before One we can never fully know, holding out our empty hands (or bags or pillowcases) and hoping/expecting to receive what we have not earned and do not deserve…
We’ll have our “churchified” version of a Halloween Celebration/Fall Festival on October 21st (detailed within these pages). I hope you can participate.
Other October happenings include: Wildly Outrageous Wednesdays ( W.O.W.) will resume on October 4th
Confirmation Classes will begin on October 4th
Church Family Game Night will premier on October 4th
Church Conference (October 8th) There will only be one worship service that day (10 am)
Followed by a church-wide pot luck Followed by the Church Conference
Our Fall Stewardship Campaign will begin on October 15th “Living Each Day as a Steward”
All Saints Sunday (October 29th) Make sure we have the name of your loved ones who have died since
last All Saints Sunday—and a picture of them to be projected when their name is read.
By then our thoughts will already be turning to turkeys and Christmas trees! Until then, try to take time to enjoy the colors, aromas, sounds and flavors of Oc-tober.
Wishing you more treats than tricks, Pastor Gregg Mayberry

Refugee Resettlement Project: October Welcome Home Update and Additional Opportunities
What a busy, beautiful summer and back-to-school it has been for our dear family from Iraq and our BBUMC volunteers! We are pleased to share with you the accomplishments the family has achieved in the past couple of months with a little help from their BBUMC friends!
Through a cadre of volunteer drivers, the children enjoyed enriching, fun experiences in a local summer camp and in BBUMC’s VBS program.
Mom participates in one-on-one weekly ESL lessons in her own apartment, offered by our dedicated BBUMC volunteer.
We supplemented the family furnishings with additional necessary household and personal items, such as a vacuum cleaner, fans, and tennis shoes.
The family acquired health and dental care and a variety of other necessary supportive services.
We helped celebrate the 5th birthday of a very delighted and appreciative little girl.
Mom shared her love of cooking with 15 participants at BBUMC through her Taste of Iraq cooking class.
The children enrolled in a local elementary school, attended Open House to meet their new teachers, received a backpack stuffed with supplies furnished by BBUMC members, and are adjusting to the first few weeks of a new school year.
We are thrilled that Mom is now employed in the food services department of a local school district! While hours are limited at first, she will be able to work and gain experience in her beloved culinary field while maintaining work hours consistent with her children’s school schedule! This is a major step toward self-sufficiency!
Mom is eager to become independent and we are exploring transportation options, including driver’s edu-cation classes.
Each of the above successes relied upon many volunteer hours of effort, but a sense of humor, prayers, lis-tening ears, and many hands have helped us manage and move forward. A church family with a big heart shared its blessings with a family in need, and in turn, is greatly blessed.
Here are some additional opportunities for you to become involved:
Consider signing up for another Cooking with Miranda class: Sunday, October 22nd, from 4-6 pm at BBUMC. Details will be in our church bulletin soon!
Consider donating an in-good-condition car. You can imagine the challenges for this courageous Mom and her family as they strive to become self-sufficient with limited means in a new country. Currently, we are assisting Mom in obtaining her driver’s license and an automobile. If you can assist our family with the do-nation of a used car or would like to know how you may become further involved in this rewarding volunteer effort, please contact Michelle Haight at [email protected].
Big Beaver, thank you for warmly welcoming home this beautiful family.
ADULT LIBRARY NEWS Let’s take a look at a few new nonfiction books that have been donated to our Adult Library. James Bradley’s Flags of our Fathers was written in 2000. Based on one of the worst battles in WWII the book takes us from the training of 6 men, the landing and the struggle of the battle and finally to the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. It will fill you with awe. (920) The Case for a Creator is an attempt by author Lee Strobel to prove that there is a god. Does he use the same theories that once led him away from God? Does it work? (212.1) Max Lucado in He Still Moves Stones Points out obstacles in the Bible to seal your belief in God. (226.09) Praying through Cancer by Susan Sorensen. This is a 90 day devotional for women. (242.2) As the days shorten in this season of Fall it is a good time to read thrillers. Give one of the fol-lowing a try. These 4 are on the new book shelf outside the library. Split Image by Robert B.Parker. Mirage by Clive Cussler The Judas Strain by James Rollins Vanished by Irene Hannon In addition the fiction shelves in the adult library have many more books that will keep you guess-ing and trying to solve crimes before the end of the book. The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton There are troubles in all our lives. But this novel shows us that we will find solutions and can add goodness to many situations. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. Use your imagination to get into the richness of this novel. You won’t want to put it down.
CHILDREN’S LIBRARY NEWS
The Lorenz Family did a bit of cleaning in their book shelves this summer. That is very lucky for our chil-dren’s library here at Big Beaver. The books are part of the Magic Tree House Series. These books are ideal for Grades 3 -5. The series consists of 2 major groups. Books numbered 1 - 28 are in the First group. Brother and sister, Jack and Annie normal siblings that are sent on adventures to various countries. In the second group are the Merlin Mission Books. The tales become magical with these books. For example in #29 Jack and Annie are invited to spend Christmas in Camelot. In #42 they spend a night in New Orleans with ghosts. How about a trip to the Nile River in Egypt to search for the famous nurse Florence Nightingale!! It is an adventure in book #51. Fact Tracker is the author’s new series. These books team up with some of the previous books. For example Heroes for all Times teams up with the book, High Time for Heroes, #51 (noted above) to give some real facts about Florence Nightingale. We have another title in this series, Abraham Lincoln. We will be getting #47 to give a little adventure to this popular president. I have placed these Magic Tree House Books on the wire rack on the far right of the bookcases for the children’s library. Do climb the Magic Tree House for some great reading adventures. We received a very timely book for our science section in the Children’s Library. It is called Hurri-canes by Charles Rotter. It was written in 1994 so it doesn ’t have information about the hurricanes our country has witnessed in the last few years. Hurricanes that were beyond anyone’s imagination until recently. But this book does give some valuable information and some great pictures. Children of all ages come and visit the Children’s Library in the Sunday school area of the church. Have a pile of books reading to be enjoyed when you greet those cold fall days. HAPPY READING EVERYONE!!!!!!

WELCOME CENTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The ministry of Welcome Center is a vital part of the BBUMC community. Welcome Center volunteers represent the church in a very visible way.
It is your chance to make a great impression, especially to visitors, since after being greet-ed at the door, you are the very first people they make contact with after they enter our church.
You are normally scheduled at least one Sunday a month before or after each service.
If you are interested, please contact Maria Momeyer at [email protected].
Thank you!
Have you started packing your shoebox yet?
Completed shoeboxes are due on Sunday, November 5.
If you haven’t picked up your box yet, get one in the Narthex.
$9 in shipping costs may be included in the box.
USING THE COPIER
Please note that on Thursday mornings (from 9:00-1:00), the office copier is needed to make bulletins, inserts, Sunday School curriculum and other items for our Sunday worship services.
If you are in need of copies, please plan your schedule accordingly.
We will be happy to assist you once all of our work is finished.
Thank you for your patience, understanding and support to the staff at Big Beaver UMC!
Families with children are invited to join us for a ministry program in which families have time to
connect with each other and other families once a month in a safe, fun and Christian environment.
We will have a “Move & Groove” game night on Friday, October 6 from 6-7:30 pm in the family
center. There will be games for all ages and allergy-friendly snacks. RSVP to Becky Lorenz at
[email protected] or on the One Stop sheet in the bulletin.
Mom’s Prayer Group
“Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you.” Psalm 55:22
Do you feel overwhelmed with all the demands of being a mother, wife, friend and co-worker? Then come join us on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 pm at Becky Lorenz’s house. We will be discussing a video-based study called “She’s Got Issues” by Nicole Unice.
We will learn how to address these issues in our lives and how we can cope and overcome with the help from the Bible, our Christian friends, and above all, our relationship with God. Cost of book $8. Come and enjoy a time of fellowship and support with other mothers. We encourage moms of all ages to come.
Know a friend that would benefit as well – bring them along! If you have any questions, please contact Laurie Comer ([email protected]) or Becky Lorenz ([email protected]).

Helping Faithful People Live Generous Lives We spend our lives acquiring things. The Church teaches us that the faithful stewardship of our possessions is important. As Christians, we seek to be good stewards of God’s gifts. Many of us manage these possessions well throughout our lives. Yet, we often are not sure of the best methods for overseeing the care of these pos-sessions beyond our own need. We are reluctant to establish any estate plan, notwithstanding one that will serve as a testimony to our faith. We even avoid initiating plans that will enable caring for one another easier during times of uncertainty or decreased health. In fact, over 50% of Americans have not established an estate plan.
An estate plan is a significant resource for a faithful Christian steward. It enables individuals to be assured that their personal desires will be followed. It provides a tool to distribute people’s assets according to their faithful intent. It may solve some personal financial situations, help provide retirement income, and certainly provide peace of mind throughout your life. When is it best to sell an asset and contribute the proceeds to the church? When is it best to contribute the asset instead of selling it?
How could I assure retirement income for the remainder of my life and provide a charitable gift to the church at the same time?
How can I give to a charity and still provide a legacy to my grandchildren?
How can I best provide a legacy gift to help carry on the mission and ministry of the church?
Have you ever asked yourself one of these questions? Most people have thought about one, if not several, of these questions. Yet, few of us know the answers to most of them.
You are invited to attend a one-hour seminar, Grateful Living & Generous Giving: An Introduction to Estate & Life Gift Planning, to be held on November 5th following the 11:00 worship service. Many of your ques-tions about legacy gifts and estate planning basics will be answered. This seminar is for everyone. No prod-uct or service will be sold. We are hosting this informative seminar to equip you to be an even better steward of God’s gifts in your life. Copyright © United Methodist Foundation of Michigan. Living Each Day as a Steward!
C.S. Lewis said, “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom
God says, in the end, "Thy will be done."
As redeemed children of God, of course, we desire to belong to that first category. We long to live each day as stewards who ear-nestly pray, “Thy will be done.” As God’s stewards, we are devoted to using all that we are and have for his purpose. We are God’s stewards each and every day.
On Sundays in October beginning on the 15th, the theme of our worship services will be living each day as a steward. We will learn how the Holy Spirit, working through Word and Sacrament, transforms us to be more like our Chief Steward, Jesus, who willingly poured out his life in giving and serving, ultimately sacrificing his very life for our eternal lives. Just as Jesus faithfully served his Father by serving us, we are to use our lives and gifts in faithful service to him by serving others. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).
As your Stewardship Chairperson, I pray that each of you will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of your Lord that you might be strengthened in faith both for eternity and for a fruitful life here on earth.
The weekly themes are as follows: October 15, 2017 “The Steward’s Identity” October 22, 2017 “The Steward’s Purpose” October 29, 2017 “The Steward’s Lifestyle” November 5, 2017 Commitment Sunday ACTION: Please prepare and bring a hand written or typed letter to worship on October 15. The theme of the letter should be “My Story” which tells the story of your relationship with God and/or BBUMC and what you get out of those relationships. All stories will be posted to the cross during worship. May God grant us strength and wisdom to be the faithful stewards that he has called us to be! Lisa Jones, Stewardship Chairperson
