Introduction

This guide documents changes made with the delivery of Release 8.3 of the Banner Enterprise Data Warehouse (Banner EDW) product. Release 8.3 includes enhancements, RPEs, and problem resolutions.

Banner EDW 8.3 Relationship with Banner Student Retention Performance

You can implement this release alone or in conjunction with the Banner Student Retention Performance 1.0 product, which includes the pre-built Cognos Business Intelligence components. If you have licensed the Banner Student Retention Performance product, you will want to refer to the Banner Student Retention Performance Release Notes and the Banner Student Retention Performance Handbook for details about the Cognos components.

Enhancements for Banner EDW 8.3

This document describes the following enhancements.

Student Updates

This release of the Banner EDW includes new components (business concepts, stars, and cubes) that support loading and maintaining student information in the warehouse. You can use these components to enhance student related reporting capabilities. If you license the Banner Student Retention Performance (SRP) product, these changes and additions support SRP reporting; however, you can use these components without the SRP product.

Architecture Updates

The cleansing process has been updated to make it more user friendly and efficient. Mappings disable/enable constraints to enhance load/refresh performance. Unique indexes are added to dimensions to aid in data integrity. Concepts previously defined as Cognos Parameter Maps are now defined and managed within the Administrative User Interface. Updating and changing those values no longer requires publishing Cognos packages.

To enable the support the ability to load data from disparate data sources, a new dimension was created with EDW 8.2 called WDT_WAREHOUSE_ENTITY. This dimension serves as a conformed entity dimension across all EDW components regardless of data source. To incorporate the use of this new dimension, all ETL logics have been updated to populate the UID field with the surrogate key from this dimension as opposed to a Banner PIDM.

NoteThe PERSON_UID field in the EDW will not match the PERSON_UID field in ODS (which currently does contain the Banner PIDM value).

Administrative User Interface Updates

The Cleansing process has been updated. The Cleansing process options have moved from the parameter records to a new Set Up Cleansing item on the Options menu. Also, there have been filters added to the control report page, cascade options within the parameter page and subprocess info/process info are added to job menu pages.

Prerequisites

Banner EDW release 8.3 requires the following versions of products pre-installed:

• Banner Operational Data Store 8.3

Refer to the Banner Performance Reporting & Analytics (BPRA) Resource Guidelines document for the most current information about BPRA, Banner, and Third Party product dependencies and compatibility for this release.

The Banner DC Release Interdependency Matrix document, available for download from the Documentation Download area of the Customer Support Center, outlines source Banner system release dependencies for Banner EDW.

New Student Content - Functional

New components were added to the Banner EDW that let you add student data to the warehouse. This new warehouse content supports reporting on student retention from both performance and progress perspective. The new student related components are briefly described in this enhancement section with pointers on where you can find more detailed information.

NoteThe components listed in this release guide are available to all licensees of the Banner EDW. If you license the Banner Student Retention Performance (SRP) product, there are additional changes and additions that support SRP reporting on retention from the student engagement perspective.

Changed Cognos Framework Manager model

The sghe_pm Cognos Framework Manager model was updated to include student retention information for both performance and progress. This model includes the new student-related information structures and data relationships. The new business concept packages - Analyze Student Progress and its snapshots are built from the new data in this model. The published packages are included within the delivered Cognos import and the underlying model is included in the delivered source code.

New business concepts

The following new business concepts were added to the Banner EDW. You can use these business concepts for reporting and analysis of data from the Banner and Banner Relationship Management

PM Analyze Student Progress

You can use this business concept to measure student retention, performance, and progress at your institution by examining the records for the students who are retained and those not retained. This business concept enables you to measure student retention from one academic period (like or sequential) to another, academic performance and progress, student course details, and academic outcome sought or awarded at the institution.

Snapshot PM Analyze Student Progress

The snapshot versions of the business concepts contain the same data s the original business concept except the data is frozen at institution specified points in time called events. This allows you to report off of the data as it changes over time or compare one event’s data to another’s.

New cubes

The following cubes that include student retention data were added with this release.

• PM Multi Year Retention and Graduation Cube

Enables you to analyze retention and graduation headcounts and rates by number of years from the academic period first attended.

• PM Retention by Academic Period Cube (Like or Sequential)

Enables you to analyze retention headcounts and rates from like or sequential academic periods using different combinations of demographic, diversity, academic study, and student grouping attributes.

Several new stars were added to support the business needs of student retention warehouse information. The stars illustrate the student retention related fact and dimension table relationships in the warehouse.

Enhanced Cleansing

In an effort to propagate cleansing enhancements introduced with the EDW 8.2 release throughout the entirety of the Banner EDW infrastructure, updates were made in a manner in which the cleansing rules are maintained. The Cleansing rules are now stored within Cleansing Data Rules (MGRCRUL) and Cleansing Data Elements (MGRCDIM) tables.

A new submenu was added to the Administrative UI that consolidates access to all of the cleansing functions. You access the submenu within the Administrative UI by selecting Options > Set Up and Maintain Cleansing Processes.

The first two items on the menu, are new with this release.

You will use the “Set Up and Maintain Cleansing Rules” item to defines the cleansing rules used by the Load Banner EDW Dimensional Data Default Cleansing Values cleansing load job. These rules are stored in the Cleansing Rules (MGRCRUL) table and control cleansing associated with the new Advancement components of the warehouse.

You will use the “Set Up and Maintain Cleansing Data Elements” item to define the cleansing data elements associated with the rules stored in MGRCRUL. These data element definitions are stored in the Cleansing Data Elements (MGRCDIM) table.

The remaining menu items “Maintain Descriptions for Code Values” and “Translate Code Values from Source Data” are not new. These are existing cleansing functions that control the short and long descriptions for code values and define which source system code values match to the target system.

Cleansing Data Rules (MGRCRUL)

The Cleansing Rules (MGRCRUL) table contains the information that defines the cleansing rules used by the Dimensional Data Default Cleansing Values cleansing load job.

Cleansing Data Elements (MGRCDIM)

The Cleansing Data Elements (MGRCDIM) table contains the information that defines a cleansing data element. These elements are the actual dimension columns that are cleansed in the warehouse during standard ETL processing.

Banner EDW changed objects

The edw80300_changed_objects.csv file includes a detailed list of the objects (views, tables, columns) that were added, changed, or removed with this release. To view the list, access the edw80300_changed_objects.csv file, which was delivered with your product documentation. You can open the file in Microsoft Excel or a similar spreadsheet application. You can reorganize the columns as needed.
