Faces in the Crowd
Worship Notes There are 5 Sundays in April, so we will have
lots of time to get together and gather in
worship as a Banwell family. During the
month of April, of course, we will celebrate
the Easter season and the Pastor will
complete his message series on “Life in the
Gospel of John”. After that, Alex will begin a
new message series with the title “Ground
Rules”. As usual, good music will be led by
our Minister of Music, Ian McGregor Smith,
as well as the many volunteers who
graciously give of their time. May the Lord
continue to bless us as we gather together in
worship!
Christian Education Hour
Classes are offered for all ages. Bring your
family to learn more about the Bible.
Beginning April 2nd, Geoff McKay will be
teaching the Adult class.

Thank you for your support of the 2017 Bowl-a-thon! Because of you, kids who otherwise wouldn’t have access to camp programs will have the opportunity to spend a life-changing week at Camp Her-mosa. To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of fundraising tips and tricks that will actually work. We are al-so here to answer questions or listen to your ideas. We want to help you, help us!
1. Set a goal This part’s easy! We’ve already done it for you: the average participant in our bowl-a-thon raises a minimum of $100, while each team generally raises a minimum of $600. This is a reasonable place to start. Be sure to keep in touch with your teammates and encourage each other as you work to-wards your goal.
2. Make a list of potential donors to contact Before you begin contacting others, you should start with yourself! You must believe that Camp Her-mosa is a pretty great place if you have signed up to participate in this event. So, why not show the world your love for camp and your belief in this event by donating to yourself? It will do your heart good and encourage your donors to do the same. After that, make a list of people close to you that know about camp and understand your love for Her-mosa. Next, make a list of people that don’t know about camp (co-workers, friends, teachers, peers at church and in the community, etc.). Divide your master list into people you can approach in per-son, and people you will send an email or FB message to.
3. Draft an email or get ready for some in-person conversations Above all, make sure your emails or conversations are personal. We have all gotten fundraising re-quests that we know were sent to a whole group of people all at once, and we all know how un-special that makes us feel. Try to meet with potential donors in person or send them a personalized message. Feel free to create a template for your messages, but make sure to change the name for each email you send out, and make sure to add a personal touch. This will save you time but will al-so ensure people feel special and unique. Whenever possible, share your story! If you’ve been to Camp Hermosa, you undoubtedly have many, many memories of the fun times you had there and the meaningful lifelong relationships you’ve made. When you approach the people on your list, tell them about the impact camp has had on your life and the lives of others, and tell them you need their help to make sure all kids have an opportunity to experience camp.
Fundraising Tips
That Actually Work!
4. Get started! Be bold! Work your way through the list, starting with the person you think will give you the biggest donation. Once you have a few donations, you can help inspire others by sharing your progress toward your fundraising goal. Don’t be shy! People do not mind being asked to donate to a worthy cause, and are more likely to give if you ask them directly (as opposed to a mass post on FB). Make it easy for people to donate by providing all of the relevant information in your request. People don’t usually decline a request, but they can get busy and distracted, just like you. Make your request, remind them once, and then ask them again a few days or a week before the bowl-a-thon. Start right now! I know it seems early, but life gets busy and we often like to procrastinate until the last minute and get overwhelmed with last minute fundraising. Give yourself plenty of time to talk with people about camp and the event. Start today by making your list of potential donors. Tomor-row, send a text message, call, or meet with your first person. Continue to do this until you reach your goal.
5. Show your gratitude Whatever you do, do not forget to say thank you to your donors! We appreciate their generosity and we need to let them know. (Not to mention that studies show people are more likely to give again and give more if they feel appropriately appreciated after their first donation. Saying thank you this year will make your fundraising job a lot easier next year!) Send a card or hand out a bit of candy or give them a brochure so they can see what their gift is doing. Even a quick email should be enough, but make sure it is personal.

AGE UNLIMITED “He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead,
just as He said would happen.” Matthew 28:6
Spring has arrived and we continue our jour-ney through Lent as it leads us to Easter. Age Unlimited, the Senior’s Ministry of Ban-well, will celebrate our Easter fellowship on Wednesday, April 12th at 11 AM in the Chapel room. Henry Nurse is the coordinator of the group and opens our meeting with a welcom-ing statement. Rev. Dr. Alex Moir opens with a prayer. This month we will sing our favourite Easter hymns. Our devotional thought is based on an “Our Daily Bread” ar-ticle by Philip Yancy called “Easter Start”. Our featured presentation is Gord Hambly. He and Marlene have travelled extensively. One of their trips featured a 19 day tour of Egypt where they have many wonderful ex-periences and saw historic sites. Plan to join us for an exciting adventure to “Egypt” where they have many wonderful experiences and saw historic sites. Plan to join us for an ex-citing adventure to “Egypt”. Claude Daniels expresses our grace before our luncheon. Our morning concludes with a spectacular, festive, Easter luncheon. This is organized by our team of hostesses: Yvonne Eberle, Penny Bain, Madelon Kidd, Dorothy Allan, Pam Beemer and Carol Middaugh. To cover the cost of purchasing the food, we invite you to give a freewill offering. Mark your calendar and make your plans to attend this special Easter fellowship. Please indicate your presence on the sign-up sheet on the coffee counter by Sunday, April 9th. May each one in our Banwell congregation experience a most blessed Easter. Happy Easter to all! My Back Pages
By the time you read this issue of the Banwell “News and Views” you will realize that Easter is a bit late this year. The date of Easter was determined at the ancient Council of Nicaea in the year 325, although other weighty decisions were made at the council as well. As a result, Easter is always cel-ebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon, that occurs after the spring equinox (March 20
th/21
st). This year the full moon falls on Tuesday, April 11
th … hence we are celebrating Easter on
Sunday April 16th.
I remember this was always a big deal back when I was a student in elementary school, before spring break was standardized and when it was always tied to Easter. My knucklehead friends and I loved to have a late spring break … it meant being outside and goofing around, fishing for pike in the local creeks, and being able to wear our spring jackets, at least for a few days before late winter weather might return. It might even mean breaking out our ball gloves and throwing the ball around a bit with my brothers at home. Back then we played a lot of pick-up games of softball whenever we could and, though we played hockey as well in the winter, we couldn’t wait for the ball season to begin … so we were always glad to push the season a bit. Of course as the years went by, Easter took on a different significance, as my faith became more important to me. I am now of the opinion that, in spite of what Christmas has become, Easter is the more meaningful time for us as believers in Jesus. To be sure what we celebrate at Christmas time, the incarnation and the “word became flesh and dwelt amongst us” (John 1:14), and all that means is still so central to our faith … but what would it all mean without the Easter experience? Perhaps the apostle Paul states it most eloquently, to his friends in Corinth … And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. (I Corinthians 15:14). Yes the Father sent the Son, and there is a need to celebrate that … but the fact that the Son lived and gave His life and then came to life again is what really makes a difference. Instead of remaining a rural sensation in Galilee, “he set his face toward Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51) and, through the events that resulted in his crucifixion and resurrection (and his post-resurrection appearances), a power has been un-leashed that has captivated the world ever since. So as we gather this Easter, rejoicing that we may do so in warmer weather than usual (at least we hope so), let us do so in the knowledge that we have truly been set free in Christ and that life will never be the same because of the events surrounding Easter. Once again, from the 15
th chapter of I
Corinthians … Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” A happy and meaningful Easter season to you all! Devotedly your pastor … Alex
