As we reflect upon how Mary and Joseph welcomed the Magistrangers, aliens, foreignerswho came to adore the new born king of the Jews, so always in the week following Epiphany, the USA bishops proclaim this week National Migration Week. Jesus in Matthew 25:35 taught us that when we welcome the stranger, we welcome him. The theme for this year is Creating a Culture of Encounter. This is the 14th anniversary of a wonderful document the bishops wrote in 2003: Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope, A Pastoral Letter Concerning Migration from the Catholic Bishops of Mexico and the United States. If you have never read the document, please do so at http://tinyurl.com/c4xm2vs

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the official ending of the Christmas season. It is not a holyday of obligation. Of course, Jesus was not baptized as a baby, but he was baptized by John the Baptist when Jesus was about 30 years old. Ever since the early Church, we put his baptism as a part of the Christmas-Epiphany time frame. Why? At the beginning of the new year ancient Mediterranean cultures celebrated the epiphanies or manifestations of their gods. Not wanting to miss out on all the festivities, we decided to celebrate the manifestation or epiphany of the Son of God. When did he manifest his presence, his glory, his divinity? At his birth, as the shepherds came to adore him, as angels sang his praises, when he revealed himself to the Magi, those were epiphanies of his glory. Fastforward to the next time, and that was when he was baptized because the Father said, This is my beloved Son. My favor rests on him, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him. Next time? Ah, at the wedding feast of Cana when he did his first miraclehe turned water into fine wine, and as St. John says, Thus did he reveal his glory, and his disciples believed in him. Yesterday at the Saturday morning Mass, that was the Gospel passage. From Christmas through tomorrow, its all about the glory of God revealed when the Son of God entered human history!

Dcn. John 20th ordination anniversary January 11th.

Fr. Paul will be on a vacation January 12th -17th.
