THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY AUGUST 15, 2021

IN OUR PARISH

RETIRED PARISHIONERS – WE NEED YOU!Friends Across Time Returns for our 17th Year! Information Meeting tomorrow, Monday, August 16The popular Friends Across Time program returns to St. Matthew School for our 17th year! Students from both Mrs. Hartge’s and Mrs. Wnek’s Fourth Grade classrooms

participate. This well-established intergenerational group enables our students and older parishioners to learn from, and better appreciate, each other’s experiences through planned monthly activities during the school year.Hear the enthusiasm of two long-time participants: Carol Trapp says, “It has been quite rewarding to me. I always come home with a warm feeling.” Sue Lawhead says, “This program has enriched my life ten-fold! I receive more from the children than I would have ever imagined!”The sessions are held each month of the school year, September through May: Mrs. Hartge’s class on the first Tuesday and Mrs. Wnek’s class on the second Tuesday of each month, 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the parish’s St. Anthony Room. We need at least seventy (70) retired parishioners to be buddies with Fourth Grade students. Returning participants are encouraged to invite interested friends! In keeping with Diocesan and Parish guidelines for a safe environment, all participants must have attended Protecting God’s Children training, and have a background check, including fingerprinting. Watch the bulletin for the Protecting God’s Children training schedule, and for upcoming fingerprinting opportunities.Come to our informational meeting tomorrow, Monday, August 16 in the St. Anthony Room after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Refreshments will be provided! Questions? Please contact Mrs. Judeen Hartge at 614-477-9678 or [email protected].

OUR NEED FOR A MOTHERBy Julie Ratliff, Family Life Office CoordinatorThe last couple of weeks have been a time of great transition here at the Ratliff home. We have moved a daughter into her first apartment; our 18-year-old son is heading to his first year of college; and another son and daughter-in-law are getting ready to welcome a baby. All of this is so good, but also has me contemplating my role as mother and grandmother. Do we ever outgrow our need for a mother?I remember my first days as a mama relying on my mom for advice on nursing, schedules, sleepless nights, and developmental milestones. As our children have grown up, I have come to also rely and count on Our Mama Mary. I do not think raising children has ever been easy. But it definitely feels like the number of dangers our children can fall into are numerous, and the anxiety parents experience greater than ever. As I have walked this path of motherhood, I have offered numerous Hail Marys, 54-day Novenas, prayers to Our Lady Undoer of Knots, and a countless number of “please help me Mary.” I have prayed over seemingly trivial events like finding a prom dress and driver license tests. I have prayed over bigger topics such as for each of them to know and accept the Love God has for them and for their hearts to be open to hearing their vocation. I do not want to paint Mary as a kind of heavenly fairy Godmother but as a Mother who is always available, listening and ready to go to the Father for us. I can honestly say Mary has never failed. We found the perfect prom dress, one that my daughter loved AND that met my husband’s and my modesty guidelines; the kids passed their driving tests even if it took 2 trips to the BMV and some prayers I continue to offer and wait. The graces I receive through her intercession have changed me, changed my heart, and increased my trust in God's timing.Jesus knew we would always need a mother and so He gave us the best mother: His.

SAINT MATTHEW CHARITABLE WORKS COLLECTION is next weekend, August 21-22, after all Masses. Your kindness is appreciated.

THE NURSERY HAS REOPENED! The nursery is open for the Sunday, 10:00 a.m. Mass only.

ROSARY FOR THE SICK & HOMEBOUND – The rosary will be said for the sick and homebound of the parish this Friday, August 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the church. All are welcome to join us every 3rd Friday of the month to pray for our loved ones.

RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which those who wish to join the Catholic faith community are welcomed and introduced to the beliefs and practices of the Church. If you have been thinking about exploring the Catholic faith, please contact Jennifer Cabe at 614-532-0626 or [email protected] for more details. Our next Period of Inquiry -- for those already baptized in another Christian tradition -- will begin on Sunday, August 22 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Michael Room. Those who have never been baptized should plan to begin formation with the session starting after Easter.

DONUT SOCIAL! The next donut social is today, Sunday, August 15 in the Saint Anthony Room immediately following the 10:00 a.m. Mass. Come gather for donuts, coffee, tea or juice. Enjoy the company of old friends and welcome others into the Saint Matthew Community. The donut social is a way for our parishioners to come together and build a community in Christ; to share some laughs and make new friends. Bring the kids, grandparents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters. All are welcome. Hope to see you there!

HELP WANTED – We are currently seeking helpers for our new First Steps in Faith program for children ages 0-5 and their parents. This program will meet once a month at three different time sessions (Sunday mornings, Sunday afternoons, and Monday mornings). Volunteers can sign up to help at just one of those times. Helpers are needed for set up, clean up, leading activity stations, etc. Volunteers must meet Protecting God's Children guidelines. Please email Katie Ryzenga at [email protected] for more information.

PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE GETTING MARRIED! St. Matthew's engaged couples are the future families of our parish! Many will be on a retreat at Church of the Resurrection on Saturday, August 21 to prepare for their upcoming marriage. The Pre-Cana retreat day offers couples the opportunity to reflect on marriage, get to know other couples in the parish, and spend time in prayer. Please keep these couples in your prayers this week, that they may be a gift to each other, their families, and the world!

WHY ST. JOSEPH?Thoughts to Ponder in this Holy Year of St. Joseph

“Saint Joseph was an ordinary sort of man on whom God relied to do great things. He did exactly what the Lord wanted him to do, in each and every event that went to make up his life. That is why Scripture praises Joseph as ‘a just man.’”

~ St. Josemaria EscrivaFrom Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of our

Spiritual Father, Day 15Individuals and families are invited to consecrate themselves to St. Joseph with Fr. Calloway’s book, Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of our Spiritual Father, available as an eBook or in paperback at https://www.consecrationtostjoseph.org.

questions of every human heart. In seven beautifully filmed episodes, Chris Stefanick and experts from multiple fields of science, medicine, psychology, art, and religion examine our place in the larger story of existence. Why join us?• If your faith is already solid, The Search will help you

to deepen it. If you’re feeling unsure, it’s for you, too. If you’re worried about your kids or grandkids, it’s a great series for you to share with them.

• The Search features scientists, artists, philosophers, and other people from all walks of life proclaiming how their searches for meaning in life led them to Jesus and the Gospel.

• There’s nothing quite like it in the Catholic world. The Search proclaims the Gospel in words that modern ears are ready to hear and images that modern eyes can’t help but see and remember.

THE THIRD HEAVENAN INTRODUCTION TO THE EPISTLES OF SAINT PAUL: THE INSTITUTE OF CATHOLIC CULTURE STUDYAs St. Peter once wrote: "So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand…" (2 Pet 3:15-16). This statement is as applicable today as it was two millennia ago. While St. Paul's letters contain great "wisdom," they also contain many things "hard to understand." But there is a solution to this age-old problem and it begins with answering important historical questions. Who was St. Paul? To whom, from where, and why was he writing? In this course, we will learn the answers to these critical questions as we study, in their original historical context, the Letters of St. Paul and find therein, as countless generations have before us, ancient and invaluable "wisdom" for our Christian lives today.COURSE REQUIREMENTS & DETAILS:

INSTITUTE OF CATHOLIC CULTURE LECTURE SERIESThe Institute of Catholic Culture seeks to fulfill the Church’s call for a new evangelization by offering orthodox educational "courses" structured upon the classical liberal arts. The mission to restore the Catholic Church to her former glory begins by educating the faithful in the Church’s great inherited tradition, enabling the Christian faithful to reach out an evangelical hand to those outside the Catholic Church. For nine consecutive months, St. Matthew Parish will offer an evening lecture covering authentic Catholic history, theology, sacred scripture, literature and politics. Each topic is independent of the others, so feel free to come and go as the topics appeal. There is no cost to attend and handouts will be provided. All lectures begin at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Michael Room. Please preregister so that a seat will be reserved for you.For any questions and to register, please contact Julia Hoenig at 614-404-6366 or [email protected].

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY AUGUST 15, 2021

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and on-going initiatives providing a safe, healthy, and prayerful environment. As Summer break ends this week, it is interesting to look back a year to appreciate where we are today. The pandemic had shut us down in March of 2020. The Facilities Team never took a break, immediately jumping into deep cleaning and disinfecting activities. During last summer we figured out how to open school safely by stripping down classrooms, establishing connected classrooms, eliminating movement, providing social distancing, and working out procedures from student drop-off to pick-up. One year later we are bringing everyone back to their classrooms, reopening the cafeteria and gymnasium to provide a more normal educational environment.Regular disinfecting, nightly sanitizing, limiting visitors during the school day and a prudent use of masking this year will continue our tradition of a safe place to learn. The science lab, music program, art room, athletics program, and tech lab have all been reinstated. A new math lab, Spanish program, and enhanced tutoring program will help our students grow intellectually. Opening our kitchen and cafeteria brings all our students back together to fill their social and nutritional needs.Special thanks to the Facilities Team, many volunteers, and professionals for making the school a great place to return to this year. This summer we have also managed to make significant improvements to the Rectory in anticipation of our new Seminarian. The Family Life Office (formally known as PSR) has established their new location in the church undercroft. The church nursery is back open with enhanced disinfecting procedures in place. Our church environmental systems, security, cleaning procedures, and sound system continue to receive our staff’s attention. We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on campus activities. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Be safe, stay healthy and God Bless.a

PUBLIC MEMORIAL MASS FOR MSGR. CARL CLAGETT – Since a Funeral Mass was not able to be held for Msgr. PRO-LIFE CORNER

Chemical abortions have been increasing since the “abortion pill” was first approved in 2000 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This

approval was made with the restriction that the abortion pill must be ordered and dispensed by a certified “healthcare” provider. In April of this year the FDA suspended this restriction and allows the abortion pill to be purchased online. There are 26 states where this is legal, and over 70 websites to order this pill. The abortion industry sees this as a breakthrough for self-managed, or DIY, abortions. The abortion industry has been re-oriented around chemical abortions. Nearly 50% of all abortions are chemical. Over half of the Planned Parenthood clinics that operate today, offer chemical abortions only. The abortion industry claims that this is a safe and effective method, yet it is 4 times more likely to cause complications than surgical abortions. A study in Finland – where abortion data is rigorously recorded, unlike the US – showed that 20% of the mothers using chemical abortion had complications such as hemorrhaging or incomplete abortions.A chemical abortion is a gruesome process. It requires 2 pills – one to starve the child of nutrients, the second to induce contractions to deliver the dead, unborn baby. This Sunday, during the Solemnity of the Assumption, let us invoke the intercession of the Blessed Mother for an end to abortion, which is gruesome whether it is performed chemically or surgically. If you are interested in learning more about St. Matthew’s Pro-Life group, please contact Jeff Solinger at [email protected] or 614-506-2382.

LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED IN A LITURGICAL MINISTRY BUT DON’T LIKE BEING IN THE LIMELIGHT? THEN THE SACRISTAN MINISTRY IS FOR YOU & NEEDS YOUR HELP! With Covid restrictions behind us, we are looking for new (and returning) sacristans, who are registered St. Matthew parishioners, for all weekend masses. This is a wonderful way to serve our Lord in a liturgical ministry. Sacristans are scheduled approximately once a month and responsibilities include preparing the vessels for Mass and helping with clean up after Mass. Training will be provided. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Vicki Wengert at [email protected] or 614-270-2018. Thank you!

MEN’S SATURDAY MORNING GROUP – Please join us any Saturday morning (around 7:15 a.m.) in the Church undercroft this summer for some casual conversation before and after the video presentation – no RSVPs needed. Just come and enjoy spending some time with other St. Matthew men and then be ready to get on with your day when we end our morning at 8:25 a.m. for those who wish to attend the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Text/call Brian Gatch with any questions at 614-499-4836. Feel free to bring a friend too.

ATTENTION LADIES! Walking with Purpose is a women's discussion, faith-sharing, and Bible study community at St. Matthew the Apostle. This program is designed to help you develop and enjoy a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ. All adult women at any stage of life are welcome to join us! We are excited to announce that in-person sessions will be again be offered on Wednesday mornings (9:30 a.m.) and Thursday evenings (7:00 p.m.), beginning the week of September 27.
