FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 31, 2021
IN OUR PARISH
A LIFE WITHOUT ANXIETIESBy Ashley Allwein, PSR and Evangelization DirectorTake a moment to re-read today’s second reading and the Gospel passages:“I should like you to be free of anxieties,” St. Paul says. He’s talking to me. He’s talking to you... to all of us. Can you even imagine a life without anxieties right now? A life without worries? Especially with the chaos we’ve been tangled up in for almost a year… Covid-19 and more recently, all of the fiery politics? And yet, St. Paul tells us to be free of anxieties, to avoid getting caught up in the things of this world.A life without anxieties only seems like it could be attainable in Heaven, but St. Paul is teaching and reminding us that we were not made for the things of this world – we were made to love and to be loved by God. Our everyday struggles, though hard and very real, should not have a hold on us because Christ came and, as Mark tells us in the Gospel, He came with AUTHORITY.Even now, He has authority in our lives, but we must LET His authority reign over our anxieties. We must begin to invite Him into our daily struggles and tribulations so that He can drive out the unclean spirits that hover over us spinning our minds and emotions to be stressed; so that He can command our fears to be gone; so that He can firmly, yet gently, lead us back to His heart, which holds all peace and love that we need to get through the things of this world.
PRO-LIFE CORNERMost people are aware by now of the incident that occurred during the Mass for the Unborn at St. Joseph Cathedral on Friday, January 22, the
day of Roe Remembrance. In the middle of this Mass, pro-abortion protesters interrupted the service, shouting slogans and profanities. Details of the incident, a video, and Bishop Brennan’s statement are in this link to the Columbus Dispatch article https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/2021/01/22/co lumbus-pro- l i fe-mass- in ter rupted-by-pro-choice-protesters/6672626002/.What did not receive as much attention, but was more ominous than this unfortunate incident, was the joint statement by President Biden and Vice President Harris issued on the same day. This statement begins with:“Today marks the 48th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Roe vs Wade. In the past four years, reproductive health, including the right to choose, has been under relentless and extreme attack.” The rest of the statement uses the typical politically correct jargon to obscure the true meaning of their agenda, but it is clear the Biden Administration wants to:• “Codify” the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court decision into
federal law – a court decision can be reversed.• Eliminate the Hyde Amendment – which prohibits the use
of federal funds to pay for an abortion.• Reverse the Mexico City Policy – which prohibits the US
from funding International organizations (i.e., NGOs) that promote or perform abortions.
In light of this statement, let us renew our prayer and public witness to the truth of the Gospel of Life.If you are interested in learning more about St. Matthew’s Pro-Life group, please contact Jeff Solinger at [email protected] or 614-506-2382.
SPOTLIGHT MINISTRY – Every two weeks, we will be featuring two ministries from our parish in a Ministry Spotlight. This will allow parishioners to explore different ministry opportunities in the parish and find the right activities to use their time, talents, and treasures. We hope this will show parishioners that St. Matthew is an active parish, thriving in our faith lives, and helping our community. If you have questions about the ministry opportunities, please visit https://www.stmatthew.net/ministry-and-activity-information or email [email protected]. This Week's Spotlight Ministries are: – Knights of Columbus and Ladies of St. JudeFor more information about these ministries or to get involved, please visit https://www.stmatthew.net/spotlight-ministry.
CALL TO PRAYER FOR OUR NATIONWe can help our country turn back to God through prayer. It can change hearts, our families, our communities, our country and our world. Please join us for an hour

No registration is required. Contact Gene Poirier at 614-855-2199 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

This fund is only available to St. Matthew parishioners. Guidelines given by the Catholic Foundation, as well as the discretion of our Pastor, will be used when determining eligibility and amount awarded. PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and ongoing initiatives providing a safe, healthy, and prayerful environment. This is the last weekend for the Holy Family in the sanctuary. The Facilities Team did their best to make the poinsettias last until the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2.Last week, we had an opportunity to work in the Parish Support Center to do some much-needed maintenance and cleaning. The building is utilized by a number of groups, including Charitable Works, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. We scrubbed floors, updated paper and soap dispensers to the campus standard, freshened paint, fixed lights and plumbing fixtures. We had four HVAC contractors in last week to offer solutions to our central HVAC control system. We are hoping to select a contractor this coming week. After selection, we are still a few weeks away from installation and programming. It could take longer if additional wiring is necessary. Our apologies for any discomfort in the Sanctuary. In the meantime, we will continue to make our building as comfortable as possible during installation of the new control system. There are several lighting projects being investigated. We have new recessed LED lights for under the portico on the south side of the church. We are looking at converting the Gathering Space overhead lights with LED panels; first prototype retrofit in the next couple of weeks. Gothic style Sanctuary LED lighting fixtures are being evaluated for efficient operation, adequate light and the ability to utilize dimmer packs in our current lighting control system. We are also looking at adding cost effective lighting to the upper NE corner parking lot utilized for student drop-off and pick-up.We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on campus activities. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Be safe and stay healthy!
CANDLEMAS BLESSING OF CANDLES ON FEBRUARY 2 – On Tuesday, February 2, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, forty days after Christmas. This is considered a “Christmas feast,” even though it is not a part of the Christmas season. This is the last feast of the liturgical calendar that we commemorate Christ still as an infant child. Although this is considered a Christmas feast, it also is clearly connected to the upcoming Lenten and Easter seasons. Mary and Joseph offering Jesus to God is the beginning of His earthly ministry for His Heavenly Father. This is the first of Our Lady’s Seven Sorrows, and a foreshadowing of the Cross. When St. Simeon first saw the infant Jesus during the Presentation, he exclaimed that Jesus was "a light to the revelation of the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel" (Luke 2:32), so it is tradition on that feast day to bless candles that will be used for prayer throughout the year. Parishioners are welcome to bring candles used for prayer to the 6:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. Mass to be blessed. In keeping with tradition surrounding the purity of beeswax in candles, candles that are blessed should be at least 51% beeswax. (Most religious goods stores, including Generations, carry candles like this that are intended for prayer.) Candles can be placed on the long table in the Gathering Space right outside the sanctuary. Let us know if you have questions!
BLESSING OF THROATS ON THE FEAST OF ST. BLAISE, FEBRUARY 3 – On the Memorial of St. Blaise, Wednesday, February 3, we will be offering the Blessing of Throats at 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Mass. In keeping with Diocesan guidelines, the priest will bless the entire congregation at once, and then those who wish to come forward for an individual blessing may do so.
FIVE FIRST SATURDAY ROSARY - Act of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please join us in this prayerful dedication to honor Our Lady and the devotion to her Immaculate Heart after the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Saturday, February 6 in the church.
EXULT TIME CHANGE – Starting Saturday, February 13, our monthly Exult Praise and Worship Eucharistic Adoration will begin at 6:00 p.m., immediately following the 5:00 p.m. Saturday Mass. Mass will conclude with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and Eucharistic Adoration will conclude with Benediction at 7:00 p.m. Although Exposition and Adoration will follow Mass without interruption, parishioners are welcome to leave after Mass or to come only for Adoration. In the coming weeks, we'll share more information about how to prayerfully leave Mass while the Eucharist is exposed.
THE CATHOLIC TIMES – The annual collection begins in February for The Catholic Times newspaper. The Catholic Times features insightful commentary from a Catholic perspective and focuses on news around the diocese from parishes, schools, events and Bishop Robert Brennan. Subscribe to the print edition and the paper will be delivered to your home through the mail. This year, you are strongly encouraged to go online to sign up as a new subscriber or to renew your subscription to The Catholic Times at columbuscatholic.org/catholictimes. Access the subscription payments tab in the left-hand menu and then enter your address and payment details. You may also use the envelope from your parish marked Catholic Times (or your own envelope with The Catholic Times written on the outside) and drop it into the regular collection at Sunday Mass. Another option is to mail your $17.00 check payable to Diocese of Columbus – Catholic Times to our office at 197 E. Gay Street, Columbus, OH 43215. If you would like to donate to The Catholic Times to help others who might like to receive the newspaper but may not be able to afford a subscription, include the name and address of the individual or family. Sign up or renew right away to avoid missing an issue!
