1054 The Great Schism the medieval division of Chalcedonian Christianity into Eastern (Greek) and Western (Latin) branches, which later became known as the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church1517 - Priest and scholar Martin Luther approaches the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, and nails a piece of paper to it containing the 95 revolutionary opinions that would begin the Protestant Reformation.1525 - The Swiss Anabaptist Movement is born when Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz, George Blaurock, and about a dozen others baptize each other in the home of Manz's mother in Zrich, breaking a thousand-year tradition of church-state union.1534 - Reformation Parliament passes the Act of Supremacy establishing Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church of England.1536 - The first edition of "Institutes of the Christian Religion" was published. 1607 - Around 1606, certain Puritan Separatists in Great Britain had withdrawn from the Church of England, protesting the civil control of that body. Some within the movement also objected to various theological ideas of the Puritan system. Hence, in about 1607 several left the Separatists and formed a new coalition. One of the leaders of this movement was John Smyth (c. 1554-1612), who went to Holland to avoid persecution. As Smyth studied the New Testament, he became convinced that the practice of infant baptism was erroneous. He contended that baptism should be administered only to those who professed repentance of their sins. Accordingly, Smyth decided to baptize himself, though he still had no clear concept as to the form of baptism, because he baptized himself by pouring water upon his own head. He then similarly applied water to the heads of his companions (some forty in number) and a new religious entity was initiated the Baptist Church, with John Smyth acknowledged as its Pastor.1738 - Methodism as a popular movement began in 1738, when both of the Wesley brothers, influenced by contact with the Moravians, undertook evangelistic preaching with an emphasis on conversion and holiness.1801 - The name, Disciples of Christ, is shared by two groups, The Churches of Christ and the independent Christian churches and churches of Christ. They emerged from the same roots. The Stone-Campbell movement began as two separate threads, each without knowledge of the other, during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. The first of these two groups, led by Barton W. Stone began at Cane Ridge, Bourbon County, Kentucky. The group called themselves simply Christians. The second, began in western Pennsylvania and Virginia (now West Virginia), led by Thomas Campbell and his son, Alexander Campbell. Because the founders wanted to abandon all denominational labels, they used the biblical names for the followers of Jesus that they found in the Bible.1844 - On the morning following the "Great Disappointment" of October 22, 1844, a Mr. Hiram Edson claimed to have seen a vision. He said that he saw Jesus standing at the altar of heaven and concluded that Miller had been right about the time, but wrong about the place. In other words, Jesus' return was not to earth, but a move into the heavenly sanctuary as is referenced in Heb. 8:1-2.Mr. Joseph Bates (1792-1872), a retired sea captain and a convert to "Millerism" then began to promote the idea of Jesus moving into the heavenly sanctuary. He published a pamphlet which greatly influenced James (1821-1881) and Ellen White (1827-1915). It is these three who were the driving force behind the SDA movement.Numerous reports state that Ellen G. White (1827-1915) saw visions from an early age. Such was the case shortly after the Great Disappointment. Mrs. White claimed to see in a vision of a narrow path where an angel was guiding Adventists. Subsequent visions resulted in interpretations of the three angels in Rev. 14:6-11 as being 1843-1844 as the hour of God's judgment; the fall of Babylon signified by Adventists leaving various churches, and admonitions against Sunday worship.1901 - Charles Parham was the first to state tongues as the evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism, his pupil William Seymour, who led the famous Azusa Street Revival (1906), is more renown for his impact on the Pentecostal movement. Practically every early Pentecostal movement in the world can trace its origin directly or indirectly to Seymours Azusa Street Mission.

Even though he might remind you of a Baptist preacher 10

Baptist history does not begin with John the Baptist.11

Our story begins with Henry VIII, King of England. A vehement critic of the Reformation and the reformers, he broke with the Papal authority of the Roman Catholic Church (1534) for personal reasons.12

The break with Rome was made permanent with the coronation of Elizabeth I (1558). 13

King James I persecuted dissenters. A Bible was commissioned to resolve issues with different translations then being used. TheAuthorised King James Version, as it came to be known, was completed in 1611.14

John Calvin was a lawyer turned theologian during the Great Reformation. He lived in Geneva for a time creating his theological works including Institutes of the Christian Religion. (10 July 1509 27 May 1564)

15

His theology influenced Protestant dissent in England.16

John Smyth was a minister in the Church of England. The first General Baptist church, led by John Smyth, was founded in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1608/09. Its members were English refugees who had fled England to escape religious persecution.17

Since none of the members had been baptized as believers, Smyth had to make a new beginning. He baptized himself and then baptized the others. His baptism was by sprinkling or pouring, but it was for believers only. (1608-1609)18

Jacobus Arminius, (October 10, 1560 October 19, 1609), was aDutchtheologian and (from 1603) professor in theology at the University of Leiden. He wrote many books about theological problems. Arminius is best known for his critique of the strict "highCalvinism" that emerged after Calvin's death, which argued that theHuman Fallwas predestined by God as part of the plan to save the "elect." 19

When these English exiles, led by John Smyth and a layman named Thomas Helwys, left England, they were not yet Baptists. In Amsterdam, they came into contact with Dutch Mennonites, a branch of the Anabaptist family that taught religious liberty and baptism of believers only. 20

Thomas Helwys in 1610/1611 took the little Baptist congregation back to England and settled them at Spittalfields. They came to be calledGeneral Baptists. 21

This congregation believed inBaptism only on profession of faith. Mode of baptism was by pouring water.General atonement that Christ died for all (as opposed to Calvinists: limited atonement)Categorical predestination you are either redeemed or you are not because you are predestined that way.Falling from grace no eternal securityTwo officers: Pastor-teachers and deaconsStrong autonomy of the local church

22

Early in 1612, Helwys was able to publishA Short Declaration of the Mistery of Iniquity. He wrote an appeal toKing James Iarguing for liberty of conscience and sent him a copy of his book. "The King," Helwys said, "is a mortal man, and not God, therefore he hath no power over the mortal soul of his subjects to make laws and ordinances for them and to set spiritual Lords over them." The King had Helwys thrown intoNewgate Prison, where he had died by 1616 at about the age of forty.23

Some of the English Separatists sailed for America. (1620) 24

having made covenant of peaceable neighborhood with all the sachems and natives round about us, and having, in a sense of Gods merciful providence unto me in my distress, called the place PROVIDENCE, I desired it might be for a shelter for persons distressed for conscience;25

Roger Williams founded Providence Plantation (Rhode Island) and established Religious Liberty26

And the First Baptist Church in the New World.27

Sandy Creek Baptist Church is over 250 years old and is located in Liberty, North Carolina in Randolph County. Although records are sparse concerning the churchs beginnings in 1755, one certainty is thatShubal Stearnsleft his pastorate in Okehon, Virginia, because he carried a spiritual burden for the unchurched yet religiously enthusiastic backcountry farmers in Piedmont North Carolina. After attending a revival conducted by George Whitefield, however, he became a Baptist minister of the New Light persuasion in 1751. The New Lights, or Separate Baptists, were dynamic and evangelical, and their beliefs differed from regular Baptists and their strict adherence to Calvinism and predestination. The Separates called for a radical reorientation of life, and new birth that appealed to the common man.28

The Charleston tradition of Baptist worship, which Baptist historian H. Leon McBeth characterizes as a more formal style of preaching and worship and is the most historic style of worship among Baptists in the South. As Baptists, we practice believers baptism, allow for a time of response following the sermon, and sing hymns familiar to our faith.29Baptist DistinctivesBaptists are a non creedal folk who are identified by certain traits rather than by doctrinal creeds. Claiming no creed but the Bible, Baptists express their uniqueness through a series of distinctives. In this list the word BAPTISTS is used as an acrostic to discuss what defines a Christian as a Baptist. Biblical AuthorityThe Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and practice because the Bible is inspired by God and bears the absolute authority of God Himself. Whatever the Bible affirms, Baptists accept as true. No human opinion or decree of any church group can override the Bible. Even creeds and confessions of faith, which attempt to articulate the theology of Scripture, do not carry Scripture's inherent authority.

1st Thessalonians 2:13 1 Thessalonians 2:13English Standard Version (ESV)13Andwe also thank God constantlyfor this, that when you receivedthe word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted itnot as the word of menbut as what it really is, the word of God,which is at work in you believers.

31Autonomy of the Local ChurchThe local church is an independent body accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ, the head of the church. All human authority for governing the local church resides within the local church itself. Thus the church is autonomous, or self-governing. No religious hierarchy outside the local church may dictate a church's beliefs or practices. Autonomy does not mean isolation. A Baptist church may fellowship with other churches around mutual interests and in an associational tie, but a Baptist church cannot be a "member" of any other body.Colossians 1:18Colossians 1:18English Standard Version (ESV)18Andhe is the head of the body, the church. He isthe beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

32Priesthood of the BelieversEvery born-again believer has direct access to the throne of God. Therefore, since every child of God shares in the priesthood of the believers, all have the same right as ordained ministers to communicate with God, interpret Scripture, and minister in Christ's name. This is first and foremost a matter of responsibility and servanthood, not privilege and license.1 Peter 2:51 Peter 2:5English Standard Version (ESV)5you yourselves like living stones are being built up asa spiritual house, to bea holy priesthood,to offer spiritual sacrificesacceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

33Two Ordinances of the ChurchWe practice believer's baptism by immersion because it preserves the picture of saving truth. No other form pictures the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ .

Romans 6:1-5

We believe that the Lord's Supper is a symbolic ordinance, picturing Christ's body broken for our sins and His blood shed for our redemption. It is not a saving ordinance, but helps us remember His death, and inspires us while looking forward to His coming. It is to be observed by regenerate, obedient believers. 1 Corinthians 11:23-24Romans 6:1-5English Standard Version (ESV)Dead to Sin, Alive to God6What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?3Do you not know that all of uswho have been baptizedinto Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?4We wereburied therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just asChrist was raised from the dead bythe glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.5Forif we have been united with him ina death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.1 Corinthians 11:23-24English Standard Version (ESV)23ForI received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, thatthe Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,24and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said,This is my body which is foryou. Do this in remembrance of me.

34Individual Soul LibertyEvery individual Christian has the liberty to believe, right or wrong, as his/her own conscience dictates. While we seek to persuade men to choose the right, a person must not be forced to into compliance, realizing that it is not always the larger group who holds the truth when, in fact, our heritage as Baptists has demonstrated the worth of every individual believer.Romans 14:12Romans 14:12English Standard Version (ESV)12So theneach of us will give an account of himself to God.

35Saved and Baptized Church MembershipLocal church membership is restricted to individuals who give a believable testimony of personal faith in Christ and have publicly identified themselves with Him in believer's baptism. When the members of a local church are believers, a oneness in Christ exists, and the members can endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.Acts 2:41&47Acts 2:41English Standard Version (ESV)41So those who received his word were baptized, andthere were added that day about three thousand souls.Acts 2:47English Standard Version (ESV)47praising God andhaving favor with all the people. And the Lordadded to their numberday by day those whowere being saved.

36Two Offices of the ChurchThe Bible mandates only two offices in the church--pastor and deacon. The three terms--"pastor," "elder," and "bishop," or "overseer"--all refer to the same office. The two offices of pastor and deacon exist within the local church, not as a hierarchy outside or over the local church.1st Timothy 3:1-131 Timothy 3:1-13English Standard Version (ESV)Qualifications for Overseers3The saying istrustworthy: If anyone aspires tothe office of overseer, he desires a noble task.2Thereforean overseermust be above reproach, the husband of one wife,sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,3not a drunkard, not violent butgentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.4He must manage his own household well, with all dignitykeeping his children submissive,5for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care forGod's church?6He must not be a recent convert, or he maybecome puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.7Moreover, he must be well thought of byoutsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, intoa snare of the devil.Qualifications for Deacons8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.9They musthold the mystery of the faith witha clear conscience.10Andlet them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.11Their wives likewise mustbe dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded,faithful in all things.12Let deacons each bethe husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.13Forthose who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

37Separation of Church and StateGod established both the church and the civil government, and He gave each its own distinct sphere of operation. The government's purposes are outlined in Romans 13:1-7 and the church's purposes in Matthew 28:19 and 20. Neither should control the other, nor should there be an alliance between the two. Christians in a free society can properly influence government toward righteousness, which is not the same as a denomination or group of churches controlling the government.Romans 13:1-3Romans 13:1-3English Standard Version (ESV)Submission to the Authorities13Let every personbe subject to the governing authorities. Forthere is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.2Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.3For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and youwill receive his approval,
