Discussion

LINEBy definition, a line is the connection between two points in space. In the image shown, the design of the bar area in the lobby of the hotel serves exactly this function. Its elongated form unifies hotel guests from different points on the main floor. The physical design of the bar consists of a white solid surface composed of lines that alternate in thickness; elongating the space and attracting visitors.

SHAPEThe Agua Spa is known for the variety of services it offers to guests. Like all rooms and spaces within the Mondrian Hotel, the Agua Spa is designed to evoke an emotion/experience that is highly sought after; relaxation. The curvilinear shape of its main desk sets a standard that is then followed by the remaining design elements in the space; the columns, seating, furniture and even the walls. The repetition of curvilinear shaped objects is used to create an experience that is inviting, malleable to all, light and easygoing.

TEXTUREThe use of texture goes hand in hand with the use of color in the interior design of the Mondrian. Light colors swallow up most rooms and are slightly interrupted by the presence of dark colors; emphasizing the contrast between them. What is great about this, is that it perfectly coincides with the use of texture as a tool to add levity to spaces and a feeling of being in a large space or a relaxing place—an ingenious way to make visitors truly feel as if they are in a destination. As in the example picture, you can already see just by glimpsing at one image that there are four textures in just one corner; the texture of the wall, the chairs, the floor, and the patterned wall to the left.

PATTERNLike color, pattern has become a major tool in the design efforts within the interior of the hotel. Pattern is used to accentuate walls, the custom furniture, and even the main stairs– a focal point for when visitors walk into the lobby. What prevents the pattern from becoming overwhelming at times is its relationship to color. Wherever a pattern is located, whatever surface it covers, it is only made of one color. The relationship between pattern and color is also a design tool; intricate patterns with dark colors add more weight to spaces, and provide a break from spaces whose light nature provide levity, Patterns with lighter colors are often larger and more exaggerated, creating a calming look that is pleasing to the eye.

Discussion

LINEFrom the moment one walks inside the hotel, one can already catch a glimpse of the exterior. Upon stepping foot outside, visitors are met with design elements meant to enhance their experience through creativity. The gazebo is a perfect example of how lines can be used to transform a space, give it height, importance and presence. By simply creating a cube out of a simple white structure, an entire secondary space is created within the pool area. The gazebo then becomes its own destination within a destination; it is taller than most locations outdoors, it is open while also providing shade.

SHAPELike many features inside the hotel, shape is used to exaggerate forms and give personality to a space. The poor bar not only references a lamp from its shape, it also pays homage to the interior of the hotel. The linear characteristic of the lobby bar is reintroduced into the pool bar, as is its color. The columns are also reintroduced outside through a soft gesture by serving as the structure for the “lamp-like” shape of the pool bar.

TEXTUREThe same rules that applied to texture in the interior are also applied in the exterior. Color and texture go hand in hand to add weight to spaces. Within the seating area of the gazebo, one can see that red is a key color. The gazebo itself is simple and white, adding to the levity of the space and the outdoors. The washing of red over the outdoor furniture and the rug provides drama to a calm environment, a tool used to avoid a washed-out color palette by contrasting against the monotone color combination of the sky, clouds, and white gazebo structure.

PATTERNAs previously stated in the analysis of the interior spaces, wherever a pattern is located, whatever surface it covers, it is only made of one color. The cabanas are an example of the combination of color, texture and pattern. The cabanas can be seen as a backdrop behind the gazebo. The colors work well together not only because they are complementary to one another but because they distinguish both spaces as their own, serving their own function within close proximity.

The image provided is of a white flower with touches of color. Flowers are most commonly given and received as a form of celebration. They can be seen in weddings, given on birthdays, baby showers, as a romantic gesture. At times they are used as gestures to make amends or to show sympathy, such as when a significant other tries to apologize by providing flowers, or by bringing flowers to a funeral. Overall, flowers are used for special occasions.

Flowers are highly sought after because of their beautiful nature. No flowers are identical, they are each individual and have their own personalities. This also explains why certain flowers dictate the occasion; valentines day calls for red roses, while funerals call for white or yellow flowers.

Flowers are diverse in species and families, but they are grown and used as a gesture to connect one human being to another, regardless of culture or origin.

This light grey color is a darker shade of white. White is often known for representing purity, calm, cleanliness and levity

Both the secondary and accent 1 colors are darker shades of the dominant color. The shift in tone is starting to reference more and more to black, adding some weight to the white tones of the flower

Accent 4 is a tone of the color yellow, representing joy, happiness, energy and optimism

Accent 2 is a tint of accent 3. Most commonly known for depicting wealth, power, sophistication and magic

The dominant, secondary and accent 1 colors are monochromatic while the combination of accent 2, 3 and 4 form a complementary relationship.

By applying the 60-30-10 rule, the dominant color will remain a pale grey, while a shade between accent 2 and 3 will be applied as the secondary color and accent 4 will be used as an accent, thus representing the 10.

The colors from the original image were implemented into this exercise. The purple tones worked well with the yellow because of their complementary relationship. The contrast between the complementary colors and the monochrome whites/greys allowed for a intermediate contrast.

DISCUSSION | ANALYSIS“ADOBE is changing the world through digital

experiences. We help our customers create, deliver and optimize content and applications (Adobe).”

Adobe’s mantra is a strong one. It clearly states their purpose and goals head on. For a company that provides the tools for artists to BE artists, it would only make sense that their workspace represent an ideal space that jumpstarts the imagination.

In the image representing LINE, we can see how by simply placing and organizing furniture, walls, structural systems and windows, individual spaces for different programs can peacefully coexist amongst one another without disruptions. Color is also included in the department of compartmentalization. From the image we can see that the color reserved for the furniture is grey, the color for the carpet is a distinct blue, the structure is of brick, wood and metal. Color coding at its best.

Break time. Downtime is a daily necessity for every workplace, although not all workplaces put forth as much emphasis on its importance as the Adobe office. In what seems to be a clear respect for the creative mind and its need to rest, TEXTURE is introduced into the office to break apart the rigidity and structure of the workplace. The addition of curtains, a textured light fixture and varying throw pillows are laid within a place of leisure to provide an “air-pocket” in the office.

We often find that not all large interior spaces can be broken into smaller more intimate spaces. This is done in the Adobe office through SHAPE. The nook in the image provided is a small example of how far the introduction of shapes into spaces can catapult a design vision. Notice that the eating area surrounding the nook is open, free and promoting interaction. The nook recognizes the space, references the color of the chairs within its own space but defines itself as a private area through its form. In this example, we can see that color is used to unify two spaces, but shape is used to distinguish them.

Transparency is what we see in the final image. Transparency between spaces is created through the means of a PATTERN applied to a metal façade. Notice how what could have been a “heavy” focal point is lightened through the decision to paint the wall behind the façade white. The combination of light and dark combined with the use of pattern balances the design.

CONCLUSION

| EXPERIENCE

Merely through experiencing the Adobe workplace visually and not physically, it is evident how knowledge of color, spatial organization and the application of design tools can be combined to result in a place that is beautiful to look at, but is not too busy to be distracting. The Adobe office is a prime example of a space that carries out the heart and soul of the company it represents.

The following images depict the core things that define my heritage; food, religion and the carnaval, sport and patriotism.

Capoiera is a sport well known to the country of Brazil where it was founded, it represents not only a means of staying fit but a way of life. Our love for sports is greatly depicted by the image of the joyous fans- we are very proud. Food is not only our sustenance but, from what I’ve learned from my family, the way foo is prepared is a means of staying connected to our past. The carnaval is a world wide event that Brazilians are known for. It is a celebration that occurs primarily in Rio de Janeiro to mark the beginning of lent.

Green represents growth, nature and the landscape that Brazil is so well known for

Yellow is a color that represents joy, youth, happiness and excitement. It is used in decorations, clothing and artisanry

Red is meant to represent the love of the Brazilian people, their warmth, comfort and deep connection to their roots

Aqua is a value of blue that represents energy, excitement and openness

Beige references the natural color of sand, representing tranquility, peace and calm

This is a personal picture of myself and my family, I felt it perfectly represents us and our culture. Photo was taken just last week during our family trip to Brazil!

I wanted to conclude the analysis of Brazilian culture with this personal photograph. This is an image of my father and cousin jumping off a pier during our trip. The color of the landscape, homes in the background and the water coincide with the color palette in my analysis. The Image also represents a candid moment in the lives of a couple of Brazilians.

I choose to do my analysis on the country of Denmark. I made this choice because it is a country of which I’ve always wanted travel to, and because it is the country from which my husband’s family is from. Although I’ve never visited, I know for a fact that you can learn a lot from color.

Denmark is a country located in Europe. It is most commonly known for its new age modern architecture and design. The country is also well known for its picturesque landscapes and cool weather, as well as their infamous Nordic cuisine. Sports, films and the music industry have been continuously growing in Denmark.

Olive (a shade of green) is mostly used to reference the natural color of Danish landscape

Blue represents the strong influence of marine life in Danish culture, as well as in Nordic food

This tint of green represents energy, freshness, and cleanliness. All aspects that mirror Danish life

Burnt orange can be seen in the warm sunsets in the Danish countryside, representing a connection to the earth, warmth and comfort

This shade of beige also pays homage to the natural landscape. It represents, tradition, calm and tranquility
