still inhabited the Carinthian mountains. the "Feistritzbach"

(Feistritz Srook) was already a source of power for hammer mills.

turbines and iron works. For as long as anyone can remember the

area around Feistritz has been industrial soil. The history of this

corner of the world, reaching back some 470 years, becomes

interesting for us when the 1933 world economic crisis led to

the closure of the Feistritz iron foundry and Dr. Leopold Jungfer

appeared on the scene. He knew about the Carinthian lead depo-

sits , the closed plant and water power - ideal conditions for the

manufacture of batteries.

The heart ot the Beetle. Wolfsburg commenced series production

of the Volkswagen Seetle and proved to be a significant purchaser

of starter batteries - also a good start for the Saren Satterie

factory. However the outbreak of war in 1939 put an end to this.

Dr. Leopold Jungfer succeeded in keeping the young company on

course, despite these extremely difficult times. After post - war

reconstructions he expanded and extended its activities to foreign

markets.

The economics ot science. Innovations and superb technological

developments promoted company growlh. Saren were the firsl

batteries in a plastic conlainer. Saren discovered the ad-

vanlages of plastic separators (high performance, low mass) and

their manufacture by means of a specially developed sintering

process. This resulted in a separate company division which also

supplied other battery manufacturers with Jungfer Isostart

separators. Furthermore, production of Jungfer separator machines

was started and turnkey battery works were sold throughout the

world. Today Saren enjoys a lead recognized worldwide in battery

technology, separator utilisation, plant construction and lead

recovery.

The ecology of science. Due to the increasing association of

growth with responsible treatment of resources and naturę. Saren

carried out scientifically arnbitious analyses concerning water, air

and material cycles. Recycling processes we re introduced for

nearly the whole used battery - lead, ac id and plastic. This plant

serves as a model for the international sale of this active environ-

mental protection project. Almost 100 million schillings have

flowed into environmental protection plants in Feistritz and

Sludesch to date. Lead dust production and processing take place

in a closed and electronically controlled svstern

Biiren moves the world. A series of inventions and patents have

led Saren to become the top battery manufacturer. World attention

has been drawn to the performance and trustworthiness of Saren

batteries resulting in orders reaching Carinthia from ali continents.

To date, 54 countries have drawn upon the strength of Saren.

Baren batteries are exported worldwide or produced under licence.

The list of customers is a long one. II reaches from the USA to the

states of the CIS. From India to Denmark. From Japan to Togo.

Baren is a driving force for cars. cameras, remote controi systems,

in nurseries, hospitals, for post offices and railways; it sets

electric vehicles into motion and supports global communications

systems.

Start well - drive well. The car battery lor the Volkswagen

Beetle was, after initial delays, the lirst ol a series ol contracts

with other car manulacturers. Bar en batteries start Saab,

Mercedes Benz, Chrysler and the Steyr Daimler Puch HGVs,

tractors and buses. Technological developments have kept pace

with increasing orders and have reached a current high point with

the high - perlormance starter battery. Long durability, no main-

tenance according to DIN and reliable starting even after the most

bitter winter nights are assured.

Driving force of the future.

One ol the Baren batteries is

called "Baren Stark" and is used

to run ali kinds ol vehicles. It is the driving battery lor many

electric vehicles, in particular lor in-company transport where

quiet, emission-Iree and clean movement is necessary. Fork-lift

trucks and vacuum and sweeping machines are still purely battery

operated. However, behind the scenes, Baren is also working

together with automobile manulacturers on the driving lorce ol

the lutu re - the electric car and solar - powered vehicles.

Silent reserves for alI. These are the smali batteries that

everybody Irom a child upwards uses. Batteries lor household,

hobbies, games and lun. Bśren's youngest generation of batteries

contains no mercury whatsoever and is cal led "Baren Green". They

are leakprool and can be stored lor many years without adverse

effects on perlormance. There are Baren batteries lor every concei-

The entry of Fiamm. At the end of 1992 a new ehapter ot Baren

history beqan. Previously managed as a purely Austrian lamily

business, they naw looked lor a strong partner lor a shining lutu re

in the eommon European market. This they lound in the Italian

battery manulaeturer Fiamm S.p.A. The eeonomie and teehnologieal

cooperation makes it possible to take advantage of extensive

synergies and to assume a leading position in battery manutacture.

Fiamm is a company ot international stand ing in the lields of

battery and horn/audio signalling equipment produetlon.

brought about changes in eompany structure and split Jungfer

Akkumulatoren GesmbH into two separate companies. The Jungler

lamily remains the proprietor of "Jungler GmbH" with the lields ot

separator produetion, maehine and plant eonstruetion. "Baran

Batterie GmbH" is an independent eompany with Italian majority

equity stake whieh retains its Austrian management and its

autonomy. These measures will have an extremely positive effeet

on the lutu re development ot Bar en - lurther inereases in exports

and the seeuring of ali jobs in the Carinthian plants.
