more local bands enter the scene as an increasing number of national acts come to town
On any given night, one can find live music in an increasing number of bars and lounges across the Reno-
Sparks area. The consensus among venue owners and
musicians alike is the number of bars and lounges that feature live acts has risen as northern Nevada has seen an outcropping of local bands.
Surely there are many reasons for this increase in local people starting bands, but some give credit to production companies such as JMAX Productions and Forever Music and venues such as The Alley in Sparks, The Knitting Factory Concert House downtown and the newly opened CommRow in downtown Reno with reviving interest in live music in northern Nevada. During the past few years, these venues have been bringing big-name national and international performers that normally would play large arenas to more intimate concert halls in Reno and Sparks.
Scotty Roller, a guitarist and vocalist who has been in the area for more than 16 years, said there was just a handful of local bands and venues that hosted live music when he first moved to Reno in the 1990s. Roller has a keen understanding of the dynamics of a successful live music scene in a community, having toured nationally as a member of The Saddle Tramps.
According to Roller, more bands have formed in northern Nevada since more big-name bands started coming to town and playing venues where fans can get up close and personal with the performers.
“Thank you JMAX,” Roller said. “Thank
you Jeremy [Abts] and [Jonathan] Chapin at The Alley. By them bringing all these bigger acts to town,
it entices these budding
musicians and gives them something to work for. It’s a dangling carrot in front of them.”
Chapin, who co-owns The Alley with Abts, said the opportunity to see national performers live not only inspires young musicians but also gives those young bands a chance to play on the same stage as some of their favorite famous bands.
“There is a lot more opportunity for local bands to open for national acts than there was before,” Chapin said.
Abts said local musicians gain a better understanding of the skills required to “make it big” when they have the chance to see a large number of national acts.
“The Knit has brought in a lot of big bands, and over the last few years with them and us, the quality of (local) music has been raised,” Abts said.
Abts said he has noticed more bands evolving at the local level since The Alley opened in 2010. This has led to a lot of smaller bars around town hosting live shows.
“A lot of smaller bars that didn’t do music are starting to,” Abts said.
Dan Bishop, production manager at CommRow, has been involved in the local music scene for a number of years. He said before The Alley came along, Brandon Deriso of Forever Music started bringing larger acts to Tonic Lounge in Reno.
“I would also include Tonic and Brandon” in the list of those who have been instrumental in jump starting Reno’s live music scene, he said.
In the late 2000s, Deriso was bringing acts that would normally play arena stages to the Reno lounge, Bishop said.
“Brandon was bringing pretty big names in there that had no business being in that room,” Bishop said, adding that he thought it was great to see a local guy, who started with a simple love for music, doing that. “ We saw that momentum (at Tonic) shift toward The Alley as soon as it opened.”
Bishop said “you can’t beat” being able to see big acts in a bar, and that shows

at these smaller venues are the perfect place for a new band to get started.
“Since it is kind of home-grown, they bring in locals on these bills,” Bishop said. “…The overall impression I have is that (Reno’s live music scene) has gotten a lot more local-centric or local-friendly over the years.”
Roller said as a result of the collective efforts of local individuals and venues with a passion for music, he sees more potential in Reno and Sparks than ever before. It takes everybody from the bands to the larger venues to the local bars, he said, to create a rich environment for musicians to thrive.
The ideal weekend in Reno and Sparks, according to Roller, is one in which live music of various genres is being offered everywhere from the smallest “dive” bar to the largest venue in town. Giving fans a cornucopia of options and tickets from high price point to low price point is the key, he said.
But where is Roller’s favorite place to play?
“I think there is a charm about playing a bar,” he said. “It’s almost more appealing than the biggest stage. I think it is more intimate.”
In a larger venue, the band is separated from their fans, but in a bar the band can interact with the crowd.
“At a bar, there is that one guy waving his beer, spilling shit all over you,” but you can see how much he is enjoying every song, Roller said. “As long as there are bars inviting bands to play, bands will be there.”
And bars in Reno and Sparks are inviting bands to play. n

Dance clubs - particularly in big cities - are constantly changing and adapting to new trends. The music,
DJ’s, beverages and even the décor are constantly evaluated in order for clubs to compete for customers. In places like Manhattan, Chicago, San Francisco and Las Vegas, dance clubs boast an abundance of brand-names and dazzle, along with steep cover charges and heavy competition for A-List V.I.P. treatment.
Dance music has evolved from predictable top 40 tracks, which tend to appeal to a narrow, younger audience, to re-mixes and mash-ups designed to get a variety of people on the dance floor. Of course, this usually changes as the night wears on and the average age of the crowd shifts younger.
In Reno, you still get a first-class dance club experience, but with a more personalized and customer-friendly attitude. Prices are reasonable and attitudes are focused on fun, without the snob factor. Dress codes vary and tend to be enforced, so check in advance.
auRaSilver Legacy Resort Casino407 North Virginia St., Reno (775) 325-7401www.silverlegacyreno.comAura opened about five years ago and recently underwent a facelift. What was once open to the casino floor is now separated by glass, insulating it from the ambient noise of the casino floor. A unique feature at Aura is the bar, which extends beyond the room so patrons can sit and converse while being able to enjoy the club action.
Also new at Aura is an updated sound system, at the helm of which is resident DJ Teddy P, who keeps the crowd on their feet with 60’s-90’s house music. Throughout the week, Aura offers different drink specials and promotions, like Karaoke on Thursday nights, live entertainment on Fridays and Go-Go dancers every other Friday (every Friday/Saturday after May). You can dance seven nights a week at Aura.
The staff at Aura has been there a while - some from the start – and they push the “fun factor” , which is decidedly “non-uptight”. They make both locals and visitors alike feel comfortable, which is a refreshing change for those who have experienced dance clubs in other, larger cities.
For a look at one of Aura’s originals, see the profile on Bartender Matt Baker on page 15.
EdGEPeppermill Hotel – Spa – Casino2707 South Virginia St., Reno(775) 826-2121www.edgeofreno.comEDGE opened in 2009 as Reno’s newest – and largest - “nightspot”. Dancing at EDGE is a multi-sensory experience, well beyond the music. LED laser and liquid nitrogen special effects accompany the latest mash-ups and electric dance music, engineered by a rotating stable of local DJ’s, including resident DJ Chris English, Jessica the Ripper, DJ Dragon (Mark Twyman) and DJ Ryon. The “house style” of music has really taken shape at EDGE, with a variety of mash-ups, EDM (Electric Dance Music) and integrated DubStep.
A unique signature feature within EDGE is Pandora’s Boxx. Suspended above the DJ riser, Pandora’s Boxx is actually two enclosed “boxes” with changing, choreographed scenes and performers. EDGE also showcases Go-Go dancers within the club, near the main bar.
Theme nights are popular at EDGE, ranging from the sexy and macabre to white parties and playa-themed fashion
extravaganzas. These are fun in nature and dressing up is optional. After all, half the fun of going to a dance club is people-watching.
EDGE offers something for everyone and, aside from all the bells & whistles, it’s the attitude of their friendly, fun and experienced staff which keeps both locals and visitors coming back.
bubINGa LouNGEEldorado Hotel-Casino345 North Virginia St., Reno (775) 786-5700www.eldoradoreno.comBuBinga opened in March, 2011 to usher in a new era of nightlife at the Eldorado. Electric-blue accents at the bars and modern, updated furnishings complement BuBinga’s warm, exotic wood-accented interior. It’s classy and comfortable.
BuBinga can accommodate a sizable crowd, yet it retains an intimate feel. The expanded dance floor can be seen from anywhere in the room, which makes for some terrific people-watching. A re-designed stage sits next to the dance floor and is one of the focal points for the room (the other being the main bar).
Guest DJ’s – mostly from Las Vegas - occupy BuBinga a couple of times each month, bringing different sounds with them. There are two DJ’s on Fridays and three on Saturday nights. The music tends to be recognizable, with dance beats. Familiar, but not predictable. This isn’t one of those places where you can set your clock by what song is playing.
BuBinga is local-friendly and they’re keenly aware that people will return only if they’ve had a good experience. To that end, the staff at BuBinga seems to go out of their way to ensure that everyone – locals and visitors alike – feels like a V.I.P. n

What types of drinks are currently popular at your bar in the aura ultra lounge?“Vodka is still very popular. I like experimenting with the different flavored vodkas, discovering what best to mix them with. There’s a lot of tequila out right now. Recently, we got an almond-flavored tequila in at Aura, which is popular. Crafting memorable cocktails while creating great guest experiences is what
distinguishes an average Bartender from the career professional. The best Bartenders take their craft seriously. For them, it’s not about pouring the same, recipe-driven drinks just to pay the bills. As with any profession, bartending attracts a variety of people – and very few rise to the top.
One could argue that being regarded as a “great Bartender” at your average neighborhood bar is easier than at a nightclub or higher-end casino bar. Local bars tend to attract a higher number of repeat patrons – usually locals – whose tastes are more predictable.
That’s not to say that local bars don’t compete for customers or that there aren’t some top-notch Bartenders to be found in small establishments. On the contrary, since new bars are popping up more than ever in the Reno-Sparks area, giving people more options. Aside from convenience of location, it’s the Bartender who distinguishes bars from each other. Yes, it’s a good time to be a Bartender, especially if you’re at the top of your game.
While nightclub and higher-end casino bars have their share of loyal locals, they also cater to visitors who expect a better experience than they’d get back home. Bartenders working in these environments are charged with creating excellent first impressions with new guests, every time. To learn more about what makes a great Bartender, we spent some time with two of Northern Nevada’s best casino Bartenders, chosen by RN&R readers as the best in their profession in the 2011 Best of Northern Nevada reader poll.
NiCole BarkerBartender, Cin Cineldorado Hotel-CasinoA Bartender for seven years, Nicole was voted “Best Casino Bartender – Female” in the RN&R’s 2011 Best of Northern Nevada Reader Poll. She placed second in the “Flavor” category during the Martin
Miller’s Gin “Trading Up” competition and was the winner of the Absinthe “The Green Movement” competion in 2011. Nicole also serves as the president of the Reno chapter of the United States Bartenders’ Guild, which she worked hard to establish.
Nicole is serious about her profession, saying, “I want to deliver something that’s different, that’s exciting, that gets people to drink outside the box. Along with that, I want guests to be really happy and just enjoy the night.” When asked about what she wants her guests to experience, she says, “I really focus on customer service. I really want people to have an exceptional experience, to the point where they want to come back and they want to experience something new.”
What makes a great bartender, according to Nicole? “We actually think about what you want to drink. We’re not just making whatever we want, we’re trying to tailor for the customer’s experience.” She adds, “A great Bartender is detail-oriented. You really have to pay attention and multi-task with the best of them. You have to be able to make a drink while talking to somebody and remembering four orders in your head. Paying attention to the slightest details and predicting what the customer wants before they actually want it. Remembering people is a big, big thing. Taking the time to remember somebody’s name and what they drink, to deliver a personal experience. That’s what makes a good Bartender.”
One of Nicole’s favorite new spirits is Leblon Cachaca, a Brazilian rum-like liquor which, according to Leblon, is the third most consumed spirit in the world. Says Barker, “It’s made with sugar cane instead of molasses, so it’s a cane spirit. It’s something that’s really popular in the bigger cities. Vegas is going through a ton of it. Brazilian genre right now is really hot. It’s a very difficult spirit to work with, so you get a lot of challenges and new ideas from it, because it is so different.”
What’s new and exciting at Cin Cin? “We’re really focusing on ‘spirit forward’ cocktails right now, where you actually
taste the liquor.”, says Barker. “It’s not being masked by using a secondary agent to cover it up. You’re really ‘bringing the profile of the spirit forward’. We’re starting a ‘barrel-aged’ cocktail program. We buy casks and use a different agent to add flavor, like maple syrup or wine or bourbon, to season the cask. Then we take a cocktail that’s tailor-made to go into that cask.”

MiCHael WilsoNBartender, eDGe Nightspot, Peppermill resort-spa-CasinoA Bartender for twenty years, Michael has been at EDGE since its opening over three years ago. He was voted “Best Casino Bartender – Male” in the RN&R’s 2011 Best of Northern Nevada reader poll and was a finalist in the 2008 Bombay Sapphire International Competition. Wilson also competed in the 2010 Tito’s Handmade Vodka competition in Reno, where he created a cocktail using Tito’s and Muscat grapes, blood orange bitters, sweet & sour and lemon-lime soda.
What sets Michael apart from other Bartenders? “When guests come in, I want to make them something that they

remember. I want them to have something that they’re going to want in the future, so they return based upon that.”
On what makes a great Bartender, Michael responds, “Remembering people is probably the biggest key to being a great Bartender. Knowing your clientele, remembering what they drank. Not even through the night, but also by saying, ‘This is what you had last time, do you want me to make that, or do you want to do something different?’.”
So how does Wilson keep it new and exciting at EDGE? “I come in every night and I have so many cocktails in my head, but I decide ‘this is what I’m going to do tonight’ and that’s what I make for people throughout the evening. Then, next time they come in, I can either make that or move them on to something else, within their spectrum.”
When asked about which spirits he’s excited about these days, Michael says, “I’ve been messing around with bourbon lately. And Aperol, an orange-flavored Italian liqueur. I’m taking a huge look at old cocktails and I’m trying to update
them so that they’re relevant now. Old school cocktails, like The Bronx and Manhattans, stuff like that.”
Wilson also points out that vodka remains extremely popular. “Vodka is still king, in Reno. Outside of some of the craft cocktail bars, I think vodka is still king pretty much everywhere. Pre-prohibition, vodka wasn’t huge. If you look back at some of the other spirits, those are the ones which are making a kind of resurgence.”
What are people ordering these days? “Women often come in and say, ‘Make me something fruity, but not sweet.’ The Blood Orange Cooler is popular at my bar. I go through a case and a half to two cases of blood oranges a weekend, just making that cocktail. I do another one called a Peach Cooler. I’ve made, probably, thousands of them. I do it with vodka, a little bit of peach schnapps, peach puree, a couple pieces of lemon, sweet & sour and simple syrup. It comes out almost like the syrup from canned peaches, with a little tartness to it.” n

Reno has established itself as
one of the nation’s best “Pub Crawl” cities, hosting themed mega-crawls and monthly pub crawls throughout Downtown and Midtown Reno. A Pub crawl is the perfect opportunity to dress up and meet hundreds (or thousands) of people who are out to have some fun. Downtown Reno hotels usually offer special room rates to participants, so you can simply crawl back to your hotel room and enjoy breakfast in bed or a Bloody Mary in the morning.
A veteran pub crawler, and one of the organizers of the Santa Crawl, Melody [mid-day DJ at KOZZ] offers some advice for newbies and crawl virgins. “When I first did it, I questioned whether or not my outfit was too much or not enough. So you just have to suck it up and come up with a good idea and just go with it. Own it.”
Since pub crawls are marathon events, Melody suggests drinking water
regularly and pacing yourself. “Hydration is the number one thing. Span it out, either by time – like one an hour – then drink water after each one, or make sure you drink at every other bar. You can generally get water at the bars. Otherwise, you are going to be hurting sooner than anyone else and you’re going to miss out on all the fun.
Hydration, hydration, hydration!”Don’t go it alone at pub crawls. Friends
make for a much better – and safer – experience. Says Melody, “These kind of events are such a great way to meet new friends and to see ones that you haven’t seen in a long time, but I always go with my own little core group. I always try to take at least three to four people with me. And you tend to lose them along the way, or they lose me, but you just pick them up a little bit later on or you find a new group and jump into that one.”
Most of the local pub crawls give back to non-profits and charities, which is an important factor for Melody. “I tend to
only do the crawls that are charity related – the ones that are going to
do a little bit of good. As long as they’re doing some good, I’m more of a part of it.”
While she doesn’t participate in every crawl,
when Melody does it, she does it right. “I do them big.
I’m doing it up, I’m bringing in friends from other states and we’re
having a good time.” n
