CLUB NEWS GARY NUTTALL TAKES HEAD COACH ROLE It's a family affair at Shaw Lane as Gary Nuttall has become the Head Coach and joins his son Steven, the first team captain, in preparing the club for the 2013 season. Gary spent most of his playing career at Shaw Lane captaining the first three senior teams before retiring at the end of the 2011 season, although he still turns out for Yorkshire CCC Over 50s. He has coached the Juniors and Seniors at the club for the last ten years and will fit into the role with ease. Gary stated 'This won't be a solo effort. We have some great coaches, young and old, at the club, and it's important we all use our knowledge together to take the club into a new era.' Despite being 54 years young, Gary is continually gaining more qualifications and looking for new and innovative coaching methods. 'Coaching evolves, and it's important we continue to refresh our thinking. I'm confident that going forward our working relationship will bring with it success for BCC. We both sing off the same hymn sheet, as do every one on the cricket and exec committee, something that was missing last year, and therefore I'm very confident that the coming few years will be fruitful for us. Gaz is simply the tip of the iceberg when it comes to help that will be around for me next season. Jason Booth will be at hand whenever I need inspiration as will Beast, the Chappies and all the Exec committee.' Gary is a likeable and approachable character, and I'm sure everyone at the club wishes him good luck in the role.

A SEASIDE TRIP IN REVAMPED YORKSHIRE LEAGUE KNOCKOUT

If there is ever such a thing as a good away draw in the Yorkshire League Knock Out Cup, it would have to be a trip to the beautiful North Marine Road, the second home of Yorkshire CCC. The tie against Scarborough CC will see a rematch of last year's semi final which ended in controversial circumstances. Scarborough bowler Daniel Evans, performed the mankad, which is where he removed the bails before his delivery stride to run out the non striker. Barnsley needed just two runs to win at the time and the unsportsmanlike behaviour led to Scarborough forfeiting the tie and left Barnsley to play Driffield in the final. The decision to revamp the Competition was passed as part of several points raised at the Special General Meeting at Doncaster CC on the 16th of January. The new 45 over a side competition will be played in coloured clothing for the first time and include powerplays, free hits, pink balls and nine overs per bowler. There was also a proposal to invite teams that are interested in playing in the Yorkshire League into the T20 Competition, however clubs voted against the idea.

ALL PLAYERS ASKED TO COME TO MEETING

AT THE CLUB

Barnsley CC have asked that ALL players attend a players meeting at the club after the first net, 1:15pm on the 17th of February.

It's important everyone from middle aged fourth team players, to aspiring Juniors playing Senior cricket, through to our top performers in the first team attend. Anyone who cannot attend must inform someone from the cricket committee to organise a one to one meeting.

BOWLERS LIMITED IN YORKSHIRE LEAGUE

RULE CHANGES

Part of the shake up in the Yorkshire League Rules was the introduction of limiting each bowler to 17 overs per innings. The clubs decided to keep the competition at 55 overs per side and voted against a proposal of limiting bowlers to 10 overs per innings but settled on the new rule, meaning each side will have to use a minimum of four bowlers.

Also introduced was the inclusion of leg side wides in all competition. The last rule change in the League format was for captains to make sure that at lest four outfielders are in the circle at all times.

There was also a proposal to change the points format in the League, with the introduction of bonus bowling and batting points for a certain number of runs and wickets, however this rule change was voted against.

THIRDS HOPING FOR A SETTLED SIDE TO PUSH FOR PROMOTION

Third team skipper Andy Frogett will be hoping for a settled side in 2013, to give them the best chance of gaining promotion back to the Second Division of the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League. Andy moved to Barnsley CC for the start of the 2012 season, from then Division Three Champions Dearne CC, who he had led to the title. Andy's captaincy skills were soon acquired by the Shaw Lane outfit and he brought three of his Dearne team with him to try for an immediate return to the Second Division with Barnsley. Despite some commanding performances against some of the strong sides it was ultimately too many games played with an under strength side, that led to a fourth place finish. Andy stated 'Last year was very eventful I sometimes wondered what I had walked into. But what could be better than a proud Barnsley lad playing for his own town team. Two things spring to mind from last term, one good, one bad. The good was the tremendous young talent at the club, the bad was the poor attitude displayed by some. Unfortunately some players have bigger egos than their talent. It's clear the players at Barnsley CC are spoilt and don't know how lucky they are to play for a club where everything is done for them and is so well organised!' Andy knows his remit is to bring through the talented Juniors at the club, to take them from playing Senior cricket to being ready for the higher standards of the first two teams. He added 'A captain at this level playing with young kids, you have to get the balance right! You can't shout and bawl but you have to show them the right way to play cricket and be disciplined. I won't tolerate abuse of the opposition and the Tickhill game showed why I don't allow my team to do it!' Eluding to the last game of the season which led to Tickhill being pulled in front of the Management Committee and made to publicly apologise to Barnsley CC for their behaviour, despite having to appeal the SYSCL's decision to not uphold our complaint. Andy is a Detective Constable in the South Yorkshire Police Force, which led to him taking time out of the game for 17 years!! Having started out at Bretton Cricket Club's Under 13s in 1974, he moved to play in the Huddersfield League for Kexborough CC until 1985. It wasn't until 2002 that he started to turn out for Dearne CC. Andy remembers 'They were in the First Division of the South Yorkshire League at the time. Great

club and very sad when I left. The highlight for me was the fact they got Dane into cricket.'

Dane will still be part of Andy's team for 2013, although he has lost Ben Whitehouse, who has returned to Dearne to skipper the side, and Sam Langley, who has moved out of the area. Andy will still have the services of his talented Juniors, including Beck Frostick and Alex Gough. The club have also signed Worsborough Bridge's former Yorkshire Schoolboy Reece Sellers. Reece, at 16, is already 6ft 4ins, and when he gets his left arm quick deliveries right, he can be a real handful. Reece has also been a prolific Junior batter, with the most runs in the Barnsley Junior League U15s last year. Andy has also added John Millward from Dearne, brother of regular first team player Callum. To aid Andy with the development of the youngsters, the club have made Roy Chapman the Manager of the team. Roy is one of the Junior coaches and will assist Gary Nuttall with the Seniors, he also coaches the Yorkshire Schools U12B. He added 'I am thrilled to be involved with the third team for the forthcoming season and hopefully I can help Andy build on his excellent first campaign as Barnsley CC 3rd XI skipper. I'm sure everyone at the club agrees that for the youngsters to progress, they need to be playing at the highest standard available and both myself and Andy will be striving to achieve this goal. After speaking to Andy, one of the first things that we need to eradicate is the believe amongst certain players that they are too good to play third team cricket. We all play for the Griffin on the front of the shirt whether that be for the first eleven or with the fourths and players selected to play with the third team need to enter the dressing room with the right attitude. The players will have been selected to play for the team for a reason and need to adopt the attitude of proving people wrong rather than sulking. Moreover, upon discussions with the Cricket Committee, I firmly believe that when either promoting or relegating players, they need to play in their recognised roles so therefore if we promote a young bowler from the fourth team, he needs to be bowling overs to aid his development and the same goes with young batters. With these things in mind and if we can manage to have a settled side, I'm sure we'll have a great season and look forward to it with relish.' Andy is now looking forward to the fresh campaign, 'My hopes for 2013 are that the team can be competitive. I want to see the players progress and enjoy playing cricket. There is tremendous talent at the club and I want to help it thrive. From a personal point of view, I hope to play at least one game without picking up an injury!!'.

The New Exciting way for Children to Start

the best game in the world!!!! Cricketers get younger and younger these days, twenty years ago, Junior Leagues started under 11s cricket and 2012 saw the Barnsley League introduce Under 9s soft ball festivals, some Leagues in North Yorkshire have even gone as far as Under 7s games. As the Juniors get younger, the coaching methods have to change too, gone are the days when Kwik cricket is enough for children, and then throw them into putting some pads on and having a go with the hard ball. Therefore, the coaches at Barnsley CC have devised the 'Mini Hitters' program so children as young as four or five can have a go at the sport. Junior Co-ordinator Phil Chapman tells us, 'When my son was three or four we used to take him to Oakwell for something that was called mini kickers. They'd have the kids doing simple A,B,C's (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed), and a little bit of ball work, but they loved it and thought they were playing football. 'Mini Hitters' is similar. Kwik cricket, where the Juniors don't bowl and run sideways has become obsolete. We want to attract younger Juniors, then once they can stand side on to bat, bowl over arm and concentrate for periods whilst fielding, we move them onto the Junior Griffins. That learns them fielding places, running between the wickets, how to grip the ball and bat, things that make them twice better cricketers without working technically with them, and it prepares them for the Under 9s festivals.' Barnsley CC won four out of the six festivals in 2012, and hope to keep improving their Juniors so they can compete on a National Level. 'We have an incredible catchment area at Barnsley CC with 12 Primary schools within two miles. Some of our players now come from much further afield and if you get the Junior set up as we want it, I see no reason why we can't have upward of 150 Junior members' Phil added. The 'Mini Hitters' concept began on the 25th of January at Holy Trinity and will move outdoor from the 9th of April. Sessions are an hour and cost £3. For further info, email [email protected]

This is how we coach em up North!!!! Mr Beardshall did leave his whippet outside of the Indoor Centre at Sheffield.
