Standing out in a CrowdThe big chains would have you believe that one size fits all; that Armadale, Claremont and Greenwood all want the same brands and mix of beer, wine and spirits. As each Liquor Barons store is independently owned and operated, we know our customers and we know that is simply not true.

Liquor Barons is the only West Australian based liquor co-operative. We use our combined buying power to bring you a great range of products at great prices. However, because we are a collective of independents, each store is tailored to reflect the preferences of it’s local community. We have the flexibility to stock boutique and obscure brands that don’t have the volume to supply the national chains. And we have the passion to track down any special requests you might have. So if you’re after something eggstraordinary for Easter, let your local Liquor Barons know and they’ll order it in. And if you want help and advice, just ask. We’re all ears.

regional destination

Our Great Southern region is both large and diverse, offering a number of exciting and highly sought after wine styles. With five sub-regions (Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup), the region’s vines are relatively young, with the first plantings laid in 1965. By 1972, the first harvest was sent to legendary WA winemaker, Jack Mann, at Houghtons to be crafted into wine. With stunning coastline, rich rainforest and protected national parks, the region is equally known for its natural treasures as it is for its distinctive wines.

The Great Southern is WA’s coolest wine growing area. All five winemaking zones experience climatic differences and variations, which means they excel at different grape varieties and offer distinctive regional wines. Typically throughout, yields are moderate to low which encourages excellent fruit intensity.

The largest of the sub regions, Frankland River, is

known for its riesling, cabernet and shiraz. Mount Barker produces quality riesling, pinot noir, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon while Albany, the oldest European settlement in WA, is renowned for its chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. Denmark enjoys moderate summer temperatures, allowing it to produce quality chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir while the Porongurup cooler climate ensures riesling, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive.

Winning numerous accolades for his unique understanding of Great Southern fruit and regionally expressive wines is acclaimed winemaker Larry Cherubino who set up his own winery after an illustrious winemaking career for some of the country’s biggest brands. Larry Cherubino was named ‘Winery of the Year’ in James Halliday’s 2011 Australian Wine Companion. West Cape Howe Wines is located on one of the most southerly points of the region, rising 250m

above the Southern Ocean. The majority of fruit that goes into West Cape Howe Wines comes from their Landsdale Vineyard, located just outside the township of Mount Barker, planted in 1989 - some of the most mature vines in the Great Southern, with some 80 hectares under vine. Their range of wines include The West Australian range (consistent fresh flavours at affordable prices) and the Great Southern Range (limited wines of elegance). Other key producers from the region include Alkoomi, Ferngrove Estate, Forest Hill, Frankland Estate, Galafrey, Goundrey Wines, Howard Park and Plantagenet.

At Easter time, why not head down for the much-loved annual event ‘Festival of the Sea’ in Albany on the 23-24 April to showcase the wines, martime history and culture. Visitors can enjoy a Great Southern Wine Festival, Saturday afternoon concert and Sunday sundowners.

winemaker profile

From our home state, the Burch family of Howard Park Wines have grown their family winery to become one of the most successful and well-loved West Australian wine brands. Founded in 1986, Howard Park Wines was one of the original pioneers to recognise the potential of the truly unique Great Southern wine region. In 1993, Amy and Jeff Burch acquired the business with a vision to establish a premium family wine company. In 1996, the Parkhead property was purchased in Denmark as the first ‘home’ of Howard Park. In that same year, the first vines were planted at the family’s Margaret River property named Leston, after Jeff’s father. In 1999, the Howard Park Single Vineyard series was launched and in 2000, a winery and cellar door was also opened in Margaret River. By 2006/2007, Howard Park was named as five-star winery in esteemed wine writer, James Halliday’s, Australian Wine Companion.

Today, Amy and Jeff still work in the business everyday, which, says Amy, is a 24/7 job in the wine business. They are fortunate to be surrounded by family – with their eldest child Natalie operations manager at the Margaret River winery while their second child, David, is communications and social media manager for the business. Jeff’s brother David Snr. has been the vineyard manager of Howard Park for many years and instrumental in helping ensure the highest possible quality of the wines. Jeff’s sister Lesley has also been with the business for several years, in a brand ambassador role.

“The beauty of a family business is that there’s something for everyone and everyone can contribute so readily – it’s true of all family-owned wineries. For parents, it’s beautiful to see our children involved in our daily practice,” said Amy Burch. Celebrating their 25th year in 2011, Amy says the family is very proud of what they’ve managed to achieve and the fact that they are still growing. “Howard Park is a strong, well known brand and has a reputation for quality. We are proud of the sacrifices we’ve made to maintain quality – we all want longevity and excellence and the second generation have taken that same approach as well,” said Amy.

The Burch family are proud to be the youngest members of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW). At the Sydney Opera House in August 2009, an exciting initiative was launched by the Australian wine industry for the first time - a collective group of Australian wineries joined forces to be known as ‘Australia’s First Families of Wine’. The twelve inaugural members of AFFW are a collection of Australia’s best known, family-owned wineries from across four states with a combined winemaking experience of more than 1200 years. Chairman of AFFW, Ross Brown of Brown Brothers in North East Victoria, who are one of the 12 members, said: “A group of third generation family wineries recognised there were a number of issues they could do better collectively than individually, and have a bigger impact. AFFW is about putting the heart and soul back

Australia’s First Families of Wine the Burch family

into the Australian wine industry. There was some criticism from our export markets following Australia’s success at lower price points but Australia has also got some stunning wines and regional icons – which all members of AFFW have,” said Ross.“One of the exciting outcomes of the group’s first year of activities was how the next generation family members engaged and got to know the other producers. The group gives a vision, unity and purpose to another generation,” said Ross.

The families within AFFW, including the Burch family, while all family-owned and clearly devoted to the family business, represent a diverse mix of styles and Australian regions. From the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia’s oldest wine region, family-owned wineries Tyrrell’s Wines and McWilliam’s Wines are proud members of AFFW. From Victoria, one of Australia’s most innovative wine companies Brown Brothers, is joined by fellow Victorian AFFW members Campbells who this year celebrate 140 years of family-owned winemaking; Tahbilk who celebrated their 150th anniversary last year, and De Bortoli Wines in the Yarra Valley whose wines, including their coveted Noble One, have become a household name. South Australian AFFW members are made up of D’Arenberg in McLaren Vale; and from Clare Valley, Taylors Wines and Jim Barry Wines. From the Barossa Valley, Henschke Wines, whose Hill of Grace is one of Australia’s most iconic wines and Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family-owned wine company established in 1849.

Together, these 12 wineries will continue to share the family stories behind their wines, for generations to come, giving their wines a sense of unmistakable place and history.

sparkling wine

The Romans were the first to plant vineyards in an area of northeast France with the region being cultivated by at least the 5th century, possibly earlier. Wines from the Champagne region were known before medieval times. Churches owned vineyards and monks produced wine for use in the sacrament of Eucharist. French kings were traditionally anointed in Reims and Champagne wine was served as part of coronation festivities.

whisky

Water of lifeWhiskey is a shortened form of usquebaugh, which English borrowed from Goidelic languages (Irish Language uisce beatha and Scottish uisge beatha) meaning literally “water of life”.

Finding the style of whisky that most suits you, or the person you’re buying for, can be tricky. There are a wide range of types, flavours and prices that can make the task of choosing a bottle a daunting one. There is an abundance of premium whiskies on offer, and when it comes to single malt whiskies, it’s a fair thing to say that none taste the same, with many connoisseurs swearing by their particular brand. Some people prefer a dry and peaty Islay from producers such as Bowmore, Lagavulin or Laphroaig; others the sweetness of a Speyside – Cardhu, Dalwhinnie and Glenfiddich, or the depth of a Highland – Oban and Glenmorangie. To help find the right option, the master blenders of Scotland, led by John Walker in the early 19th century, developed blended Scotch – a notion so popular it is reported to be selling three bottles every second worldwide and can lay claim to being the world’s most popular gifted spirit.

There is so much choice – which is mostly a good thing – and many ways to drink it. The good news is that Gavin Hewitt; CEO of the Scotch Whisky Association agrees that there are no hard and fast rules when drinking whisky.

“Don’t let preconceptions or supposedly set-in-stone conventions get in the way of enjoying your favourite dram. Scotch can be enjoyed responsibly in many ways; in Scotland whisky tends to be enjoyed straight or with a little water.”

The Japanese like whisky consumed ‘mizawari’, diluted with lots of water; the Spanish mixed long with lots of ice and cola; the Chinese enjoy Scotch with ice and cold green tea and the Americans are likely to be using the great variety of whisky flavours to make exciting cocktails. In Australia we tend to take the best of everywhere, and follow only one rule, to drink whisky the way you enjoy it as an individual. Which is dram good news.
