Legends Event
220 Education Foundation is happy to announce that they will host the 6th annual Alumni Legends The Barrington Event. This year they are highlighting alumni who have excelled in the performing arts. The event, scheduled in conjunction with Barrington’s homecoming, will take place at the High School on the evening of Thursday, Octo-ber 5, 2017. BHSAA is in search of 2017 Class Reunion Chairs. It is not too early to be planning BHS Class Reunions for Homecoming 2017, Saturday, October 7. We have already confirmed a number of Reunion Chairs to date which are listed below. The follow-ing graduation years are due for five and ten year reunions: 1952, 1957, 1962, , 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007. If you are planning to act as the reunion chair for your class, please let BHSAA know and use our web-site to help. Go to: www.bhsaa.org

Elementary STEM PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The District 220 plan is to build an innovative STEM curriculum within the ele-mentary school day so all students - kindergarten through fifth-grade - have op-portunities to apply what they are learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an integrated, hands-on, design-based environment. We want to create an aligned STEM program from kindergarten through grade 12, exposing all students in our elementary and middle schools to these important fields, and then providing further specialized classes for students who are in-terested in extending their knowledge.
STEM Defined:STEM is an acronym for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics” introduced by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Over the years, STEM Education efforts by K–12 teachers have been aimed at ensuring that the Unit-ed States remains competitive in the global market (Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach at Carnegie Mellon University, 2008).
Current State:Barrington 220 elementary schools host various STEM-related activities, both during the school-day, such as the Global Cardboard Challenge, and in extra-curricular activities, such as robotics and coding clubs. Outside of the engi-neering strand in our science program, we do not have a district-wide STEM program accessed and aligned across buildings.
As we near the end of our pilot year of Elementary STEM we are already able to see the program’s impact on our district’s elementary-age students. The Bar-rington 220 Educational Foundation is proud to support this important initia-tive. S.T.E.M. programming is critical for preparing our children for their future. Recent studies show that approximately 77% of jobs by 2020 will require STEM skills as part of the job function and providing exposure in elementary school will help build these skills and interest.

When William J. Palmer dropped out of
Barrington High When William School, he
thought he’d left Barrington in his past.
Years later he returned to Barrington to
become the teacher he always wished he’d
had.
Growing up in a dysfunctional family con-
tributed to Palmer’s early difficulties in
school. As a teacher, he has a unique con-
nection to his at-risk students as they
shared many of the same experiences.
Armed with a master’s degree in special ed-
ucation he utilized the cognitive behavioral
strategies of Dr. Albert Ellis’s Rational
Emotive Behavior Therapy and Education
(REBT/E) model to encourage students to
achieve to their potential through better
decision making.
At the encouragement of his students and
colleagues Palmer wrote his story in the
hope of inspiring young people to over
come hardship and educators to keep the
faith in their vulnerable students.
At Bill’s retirement party on May 25, 2017,
he received an honorary Barrington High
School Diploma from Principal, Steve Mc
Williams. BHSAA is extremely proud and
delighted at its newest addition.
