Dear Barron County 4-H Youth & Adult Friends- Happy November Everyone! So, as the cold creeps in, so does Thanksgiving! Where does the time go? I hope that everyone will be able to take time to spend with their family and eat some great food. I am sure that you hear it a lot this time of year, but take a moment to think about what you are thankful for and maybe where you could lend a hand to someone else who could use it. I am always proud of our 4-H youth and the community service projects that they organize within their clubs. It is so important that we teach our youth generosity and kindness. Have a safe and thankful November! Meredith Arcand UW-Extension Barron County 4-H Youth Development Educator 335 E. Barron County teams are now forming for the 2017 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl! During the competition, contestants will answer a variety of questions about dairy cattle. Teams of four members compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions

posed by a moderator. Teams receive points for correct answers and may lose points for incorrect answers. The team with the highest final score is the winner.

There will be three divisions; Junior, Senior and Mixed which may be composed of both Junior and Senior aged participants. Junior participants must be age 9-13 on January 1, 2017 and Senior participants must be age 14-18 on January 1, 2017.

Barron County will schedule several practices before the competition for youth to become familiar with possible questions and how a quiz bowl works. Competition in the 4-H Dairy Bowl encourages a 4-H member to develop a more complete

knowledge of dairy animals and related subjects. The contest provides an educational dairy program for 4-H members, including those who may not own or show a dairy project animal, and provides a way to develop communication skills and

self-confidence. Any youth interested in learning more about the event or signing up should contact Cathy Solum at 715-234-6874 or

715-651-2759 or email [email protected]. We need your name, phone, email, parents’ names and youth age as of January 1, 2017.

There are 28 clubs in Barron County planning exciting activities, helping out in the community, and working to make our youth great

leaders; all while having fun with 4-H! Each month we will spotlight a club and find out what they are up to and how they are impacting the community.

This month I would like to introduce The Vermillion Cruisers! Vermillion Cruisers is one of many 4-H Clubs in Barron County. We have 23 families and 39 4-Hers. Our club meets usually the 2nd Sunday of each month at the First Lutheran Church in Cumberland, WI. We also have a Cloverbud program and these 4-Hers meet every other month. The Cloverbuds at their meetings learn how a monthly meeting is run, learn and practice the 4-H Pledge, how to make motions at meetings and then they also have a craft to make that they are able to enter at the fair. Our club does a wide variety of activities: October we elect our new officers for the year, sign up for our snacks for each meeting and also ask if there are families who would like to do a project. In November, we have our annual 4-H Banquet and this is were we hand out all of our book awards, we recognize our past officers, our graduat-ing Cloverbuds to 4-H and any thing else that we have earned as a club through out the year. December, we do Bell Ring for the Salvation Army, February, we participate in the 4-H Trollhaugen Tubing Day, April, the club takes a collection for the local food pantry. May is a big meeting for our club as we designate this as our Demonstration meeting. It is a fun night learning something different from each of our members as they fulfill one of their re-quirements of 4-H. Then comes June and we take a Dairy Farm tour and have ice cream treat for June Dairy Month. July starts the process of preparing for fair, organize our leader stand and expo building workers, making sure every-one is entered into the correct class for fair as they look over their entry tags and answer any of those last minute questions. If anyone would like to talk more about what our club does or has any questions please feel free to contact the extension office and Meredith will be able to get you in touch with me. Thank you, Emily Drafall General Leader of the Vermillion Cruisers

Local 4-H Youth Return from the North American International Livestock Exposition held in Louisville, Kentucky.

After years of preparation, which includes studying all aspects of the dairy industry, becoming quick on the buzzers and improving their critical and very detailed thinking skills, this team of three 4-H youth were able to represent Wisconsin very well at the National Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest in Louisville Kentucky on November 4th - 5th.

The team consists of Abigail Solum, Megan Marschall and Kellie Marschall and was coached by Chuck, Cathy and Isaac Solum. All of the 19 state teams participating were very well prepared and very competitive in the tournament. The senior team of Rice Lake girls came up against Maryland, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts state teams in close competition. Although they did not place in the top four nationally, they showed their talents and represented Wiscon-

sin’s Dairy State excellently with their knowledge, wit, and playing strategy. They had to endure a written test which en-compassed coast to coast dairying practices, team questions, toss up and bonus questions, all of which can come from any topic in the dairy field. Nutrition, environmental issues, reproduction, genetics, heard health, dairy products, history, crops, diseases, and recommended practices were only a few of the topics covered. They received team awards, in Ken-tucky style, and Kelli place 3rd individually in the written exam.

In order to compete at this national level the team had to win the very competitive Wisconsin State Title which was held at UW-Madison this past January. Since then they have been practicing and fundraising for their long awaited trip to the na-tional competition. Years previous, they competed and held champion titles at the local Dairy Bowl contests and on the state level earning Wisconsin 4-H state titles in both the junior and mixed division. Congrats to our local 4-H youth for their hard work and impressive representation at this National contest!

Anyone who is interested in being a part of future local or state dairy bowl contests may contact the Solum coaches or the Barron County Extension office to become a 4-H member and join in this great learning activity. Ages 8 to 19 are able to participate and all are welcome to come and learn about the dairy industry.
