JANUARY 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians: I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoys the holiday break. Sandy Haines Principal

Thank you to everyone who generously donated food for our 12 Days of Christmas Food Drive and who also gave hats, scarfs, gloves and socks to decorate the tree. We delivered 561 food items to the Food Bank along with the hats, scarfs, gloves and socks that were donated.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season.

The Solanco School District is once again hosting the “Strengthening Families” program in the Spring. This is a wonderful program for any family looking to strengthen your bond together. This program meets weekly, for 7 weeks, starting on Tuesdays in April from 5:15 to 7:30 pm, at the Solanco High School. This program provides a family meal together, breakout sessions for both parents and children, and then, a session together as a family. There is also babysitting for any children that have not started school yet. If you would like more information about this great program and/or to register, please contact me. School will be in session on Monday, January 2, 2017.

Please remember to send in an excuse note when your child is absent. If an excuse note is not received within three days, the absence will be marked illegal.

Please remember to dress your children for the weather. This means coats, hats and gloves. Also, remind your children to wash their hands frequently. This is the best way to prevent the flu this season. Just a reminder that children need to be fever and symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Thank you for helping to keep Bart-Colerain healthy! If you have any questions, please call the school nurse, Traci Kut, 529-2181.

GIRLS ON THE RUN GOTR will be at Bart Colerain again this spring!!! We are looking for some assistant coaches to help with our team! We are expecting an even larger turn out this time around! We

need a minimum of three coaches at each practice with a maximum of four to five. We would like to keep the number to four each practice. Practices will be Monday and Wednesday, 4:00-5:30 pm.

If you are interested in helping in the spring, please contact Traci Kut, School Nurse. The lessons are planned, all you have to do is come to practice, NO RUNNING required!!!

If we get several volunteers then you would only have to coach once a week or less. New coaches do need to attend the new coaches meeting, returning coaches only need to attend a refresher. This is such a great organization to be a part of and we are really changing the lives of the girls here at Bart Colerain!

Please make note of all our important season dates as well, especially the mid-season celebration. It is mandatory for at least one coach to attend, but we encourage all coaches to attend, as it is a fun celebration for everyone! Feb. 6th Online registration opens Feb 14th Lottery is run (remaining available

spots will open back up to first come first serve)

March 6th Season begins April 19th Mid-season May 20th: GOTR 5k at F&M College- open to the public

STUDENT DROP-OFF

If you drop off your children in the morning, please have them here by 9:00 am. The bell rings at 9:00 am and classroom instruction starts promptly at 9:15 am. The teachers need time to take attendance, lunch count, listen to the announcements, have the students unpack their backpacks and get settled. If there are students arriving late to class, the teacher cannot get these things done in time to start class at 9:15 am. If your child is late arriving to school, a parent or guardian must walk them in the office to sign them in. If no one signs them in, they will be marked with an illegal tardy.

MODIFIED KINDERGARTEN

Again this school year, the Solanco School District will be

adopting a modified kindergarten schedule when a two hour delay for the school’s starting time is announced due to bad weather. This bit of info is necessary for the AM Kindergarteners – If we have a two hour delay due to snow, the AM Kindergarteners will come to school at 11:00 am and leave school at 1:00 pm. The half day AM Kindergartners will eat lunch in the classroom on snow delay days so they should bring a packed lunch with them on those days. If you have any questions about this please feel free to e-mail or call. Extended day students will eat lunch as they do every day. PM Kindergarteners will arrive at school at 2:00 pm and leave at the regular dismissal time. The end result of this modified schedule is for morning and afternoon kindergarten to share in the two-hour delay. We will no longer cancel our morning kindergarten sessions due to this change.

BREAKFAST AT BART-COLERAIN Studies have shown that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Everyday at Bart-Colerain the cafeteria provides a wholesome breakfast. The children are allowed to get off the bus early so they have time to eat before the school day begins. The main entrée is listed on the lunch menu. Breakfast includes a main entrée, milk and juice or fruit. A large selection of cold cereals is offered everyday, also. Money for breakfast may be sent in with lunch money as it goes into the child’s account and can be used as needed for either breakast or lunch. If your child qualifies for free / reduced lunch, they would be eligible for free / reduced breakfast.

PROCEDURE FOR POSSIBLE SCHOOL DELAYS

AND CANCELLATIONS When bad weather is forecasted, parents should check for information about possible school delays or cancellations on the local television and radio stations listed below: WGAL-TV Channel 8 WPMT-TV FOX 43 WLYH-TV Channel 15 WHP-TV Channel 21 ABC-27 WDAC-FM 94.5 WJTL-FM 90.3 WARM-103.3 WLAN-FM 96.9 School delays and cancellations are also posted in the scrolling message on the homepage of the Solanco School District website, www.solanco.org. Solanco delays and cancellations are also posted on the WGAL TV-8 website, www.wgal.com. As a backup, the district will place an automated phone call to parents notifying them of 2-hour delays or school cancellations. The phone call is a secondary source of notification - parents should stay tuned to the local media listed above in order to learn if school is delayed or cancelled. To change or update the phone number the district uses for the automated calls, parents should contact Bart-Colerain Elementary School, 529-2181. **If there is a 2-hour delay, breakfast will not be served.

CONGRATULATIONS to Courtney Sellers, 5th grade, for being chosen as the winner of yearbook cover contest!

Mrs. Sullivan’s class won the popcorn party for December with 189 Box Tops collected. Jordan Lefever, Mrs. Schmitt’s class, was the top student collector with 111. Thank you to Kathi Lefever, Sandy Wolfe, Danielle Evans and Sarah Landis for helping to count Box Tops for this month. The next time volunteers are needed to count is January 25, 2017 at 3:00 pm in the cafeteria. Please contact Jen Walter at [email protected] if you would be willing to help. Please remember to continue to send in Box Tops for Education and Coca-Cola caps and labels with your child to benefit Bart-Colerain Elementary.

THANK YOU to all the volunteers who came out to be shopping elves with our students for the Holiday Shop. We put a lot of time and effort into making this a fun, affordable, memorable, learning

experience for the kids, and they absolutley loved it! We appreciate all the support from parents, teachers and staff who make this all possible.

Dates for Open Gym are: January 30, February 28 and March 29 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Please remember, Open Gym nights are Family activites. This is NOT a drop and go situtation for the kids. An adult must stay with them the whole time. We offer these nights to allow the kids to burn off energy with friends in a safe fun environment. Please come supervise your children and have some fun with them!

It is that time of year again! Planning for the Carnival will begin in January! Please contact Ortrun Ludgate at [email protected] if you are

interested in helping on the planning committee. We are looking for many volunteers for planning, set up, stations, and clean up. More information will follow at a later date.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE We will be given the opportunity to participate in a school wide performance in May 2017, with an amazing Theatre company. We will be performing Oliver Twist! This production will be offered to all students. We will need many volunteers to assist with practices, costumes, etc… More information will be available soon. If you have any questions, please contact Natalie Kershner at [email protected].

The Bart PTO is planning some exciting events in the next few months. Keep your eye out for more information on a Spanish Club, a Lego Club and a Movie Night.
