GROVE CITY COLLEGE

2012 SEASON PREVIEWComing off one of the most successful seasons in

program history, the Grove City College baseball teamwill look to further cement its status as one of the Presi-dents' Athletic Conference's elite programs this spring.

Grove City captured the conference's regular sea-son title in 2011 and then went on to win the EasternCollege Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Champi-onship Tournament in convincing fashion.

While they must replace 13 seniors from last year, the Wolverines are well-stocked to make another runtoward the conference title and postseason play.

Twelve lettermen return this year, including six po-sition players with extensive starting experience.Head coach Rob Skaricich - the program's all-time winsleader -- will look to blend that talented core with astrong group of newcomers this spring.

INFIELDSix of Grove City's 12 lettermen are in the infield as

several players are vying for starting spots this year.Behind the plate, junior Doug Wells will take over asthe full-time starting catcher. He started 22 games in2011 and hit .297 while also posting a .473 sluggingpercentage.

Junior Kyle Shock and sophomore Ryan Parker splittime at first base last year and both players are look-ing to build upon solid seasons. Shock hit .308 in 25starts while Parker hit .268 in 16 starts.

Both men could also see time at designated hitterthis year.

Across the diamond, sophomore Evan Hoskinsonhas the inside track to start at third base. Hoskinsonsaw limited duty during the 2011 regular season butemerged in the postseason, earning ECAC TournamentMost Valuable Player recognition.

Hoskinson would replace sophomore Tom Hawley, who will likely slide to shortstop. Hawley took over atthird base early in his freshman season and made 33total starts.

The Wolverines have several candidates to takeover at second base.

Senior Brandon Durbin is a three-year letterwinnerwho made 19 starts last year in the infield. He will com-pete with sophomores Matt Corner and John Rende.Corner started two games in 2011.

OUTFIELDGrove City returns one full-time starter in the out-

field, junior center fielder Josh Sacks. Sacks hit .373 lastyear and led the Wolverines in runs, hits and stolenbases.

Sacks is a two-year starter who will likely hold downthe leadoff spot again this year.

Junior Zach Struharik, junior Cameron Jones andsophomore Randen Schleiden are candidates for thecorner outfield positions.

Struharik will look to hold down left field while Jonesand Schleiden will battle for time in right field. All threecould also contend for time at DH.

Junior Doug Wells saw extensive action behind theplate in 2011 and will likely be the full-time starter atcatcher this spring.

Junior Kyle Shock started 25 games at first base in 2011and will look to earn the full-time nod there this year.

Comprised of 10 select private colleges - BethanyCollege, Chatham University, Geneva College, GroveCity College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Tho-mas More College, Washington & Jefferson College,Waynesburg University and Westminster College - thePAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics.

With academics at the center of each member’sphilosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that anathletic program is a part of college life, but not anentity in itself.

During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham,Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC.

Chatham competed for PAC championships for thefirst time during the 2007-08 academic year. SaintVincent first competed for conference titles in 2010-11

and the 2011-12 year is the first year of eligibility forGeneva.

The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports.All-Conference status is awarded in all 19 sports.

Head coaches select all-league squads for all teamsports, while in individual sports such as cross countryand tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon perfor-mances at the conference championships.
