The PerForm Academy - Qualification tailored to your Needs
Qualification tailored to your needs – that’s the value promise which the PerForm Academy gives to its customers.
In 2012, we focused on making our portfolio more visible to our internal stakeholders by publishing our “toolbox” on the PerForm
Academy’s intranet page. This toolbox consists of a selection of methods which we apply when creating individual qualification measures
for employees, business partners and customers.
Depending on the context, either classroom training, elements of experience-based learning or collaborative learning may be appropriate
for acquiring knowledge, transferring know-how or creating awareness of a certain issue. Also, in a globalized business environment, the
ability to access know-how, independent of space and time, is of increasing importance. This was an important driver for our activities in
the field of virtual learning – the fourth pillar of our methodological toolbox.
In this booklet we would like to give you an insight into how we successfully apply the elements of our toolbox to create tailor-made
qualification measures for our stakeholders.
Are you inspired? Then visit us on our intranet page: www.ev.basf-ag.de/perform_academy/toolbox
We are also looking forward to hearing from you and exchanging ideas about how we can add value to your qualification measures.
Happy reading!

Fuels and Lubricants Conference – Fuel Your Imagination
Aim:The Fuels and Lubricants Conference – FLC – on May 30 and 31, 2012 was aimed at creating a forum for dialog with customers and
business partners. Under the motto “Fuel Your Imagination”, around 100 representatives from the fuels and lubricants industry
as well as 40 experts from BASF took the opportunity to network, discuss market trends and inform themselves about the innovative
product range of Fuel and Lubricant Solutions. The customer event also served as a forum to communicate the business unit’s new
strategy to the market.

Innovation along the Value Chain @ Plastic Additives Europe
Aim:“We innovate to make our customers more successful” – the prerequisite for bringing this strategic principle to life is to have a common
understanding of the market trends, the current and future technical possibilities as well as customers’ requirements.
For this purpose, the Regional Business Unit Plastic Additives Europe has conducted several workshops with selected members of its
value chain to identify potential for joint innovation and agree on the next steps for its implementation.
Key elements:W “Walk and write”: Through this interactive exchange of ideas the participants identified industries or products worth beginning or
intensifying joint efforts with.
W In group work, the representatives from both BASF and value chain partners identified social, regulatory, environmental and business
trends as well as developments and created hypotheses about their influence on customer requirements.
W Prioritizing ideas and agreeing on next steps contributed to facilitating follow-up activities and implementing the multiple ideas
generated during the day.

Aim:During this workshop, the team of New Business Development as well as experts
from the business units examined opportunities in the field of environmentally
advantageous and sustainable solutions across EV´s industries. The starting point
for the exchange of ideas were the industry and region-specific challenges which the
participants prepared in advance. Besides idea generation, this cross-business unit
workshop was also aimed at “Connecting to go beyond” thus strengthening the
innovation community.
Key elements:W Key speech on the topic “Strategic Insight –
a Key for Future Success” as an initial impulse
W Applying different creativity techniques to generate ideas
for new business opportunities
W Developing an action plan

Virtual Learning Platform
How can the know-how residing within the Performance
Chemicals division be made available to its personnel world-
wide? How can employees be enabled to integrate learning
sessions flexibly into their everyday schedule at work? And
how can this newly acquired knowledge be successfully
anchored and applied?
The PerForm Academy’s Virtual Learning Platform contributes
to tackling these challenges which are related to EV’s global
setup and the increased need for flexible and self-responsible
learning. The methodologies behind the virtual learning
modules are tailored to the respective learning objective.
While web-based training modules enable the learner to
acquire basic knowledge on a certain issue, the so-called
eNuggets – short pieces of knowledge – create awareness
and provide initial impulses. If you would like to learn in an
interactive and appealing way, then the PerForm Academy’s
Virtual Learning Platform is exactly the right thing for you!
– The Academy of Performance ChemicalsThe Academy of Performance Chemicals
PerForm 13
These modules give new employees an
overview of the Performance Chemicals
division and its different business units.
The three short learning sequences address
leaders and their teams and aim at implemen-
ting health-orientation into the daily job routine.
Seven modules address various aspects related
to masterdata: BASF System landscape,
Material creation, Local masterdata, Material
deletion, ChemLaw, Product Finder, ITSOWN
The learner understands the characteristics and
added value of the Glysantin® engine coolant.
The learner understands why BASF introduced
this new key performance indicator and how the
calculation of market profit works.
Leaders and their team members learn about
the prerequisites of successfully agreeing on
targets.

Europe Sales Meeting
Aim:How can we as Fuel and Lubricant Solutions position ourselves successfully in the mind of our internal and external stakeholders,
such as employees or customers? A first step towards answering this question is to define what the business unit stands for and what
values are shared by the employees.
The European sales team Fuel and Lubricant Solutions chose an extra-
ordinary experience-based learning approach for the kick-off of its
positioning process: They incorporated the shared values of their team
in a film script and then created movies.
Key elements:W Impulse speeches on the significance of values and positioning
as well as what it means for BASF
W Group reflection on the values of the European sales team
Fuel and Lubricant Solutions
W Writing a film script and making a movie based on the
values identified
W Movie night with presentation of all films and integrated values

Aim:In their first meeting of this kind, Controlling colleagues from all EV businesses demonstrated that their function goes far beyond numbers
and SAP-know-how. Rather, they serve the management as co-pilot by proactively challenging business ideas and decisions.
The Controlling Days were meant to support the colleagues in their role as competent business partners and thus advance Controlling at
Performance Chemicals to excellence. Therefore, the format of the Controlling Days, which is part of a broader development program,
combined controlling topics with soft skill development and provided a forum for information and knowledge transfer within the global
controller community.

Glysantin® Branding Advanced
Aim:The modular, tailor-made training concept for Glysantin® aims at understanding and implementing the brand values as well as arousing
the enthusiasm of the salespeople for the brand. While the basic training focuses on creating an initial understanding of what the brand
Glysantin® stands for, the advanced module enables salespeople to translate the brand values and arguments into the participants' daily
negotiation practice. Thus, the focus of customer dialog is no longer on price but on selling a premium brand by creating a winning offer
for both the customer and BASF. The Glysantin® Branding Advanced workshop was conducted in Europe, Asia and South America with
slight modifications to account for cultural specifics in the respective countries.
Key elements:W Toolkits fostered salespeople’s general skills in conducting customer dialog as well as integrating Glysantin®
into these conversations.
W Based on a step-by-step case study, the participants passed through the different stages of a customer negotiation
and the challenges typically associated with these phases.
W In subsequent role-plays with actors, participants could gain hands-on experience in applying the tools and
incorporating the Glysantin® brand in their negotiation.

Negotiation in the Gulf Region
Aim:The Gulf region offers plenty of business opportunities for foreign companies.
However, the German-Arab business activities are often overshadowed by misunderstandings and suffer from
unfamiliarity with the other culture.
Therefore, this two-day training should familiarize project leaders and members, executives as well as other
employees who have contact to Arab business partners with the cultural characteristics of the Gulf region
and their impact on the business context. The participants should foster their cross-cultural understanding
and be supplied with a toolset which enables them to successfully negotiate with their Arab counterparts.
Key elements:In numerous real-life interactions with the Arab-German trainer team the participants gained an insight
into the following aspects:
W How to build effective relationships with Gulf Arabs
W How to interpret different elements of non-verbal communication, e.g. Arab gestures,
mimics, body language, showing of emotions
W Interaction with Gulf Arab customers: Meeting culture, addressing problems
W Negotiating successfully in the Gulf region: How to persuade Gulf Arabs?
W Prepare your next customer visit and negotiation in the Gulf region
