We have a full programme at the hall but were disappointed our January singalong film was postponed for reasons beyond our control. Keep an eye on forthcoming events in the New Milton Advertiser as we will try rescheduling it in April. Lined up to date is Bingo, a free Coffee morning as well as a Quiz night. We'll mark the landmark birthday of HM The Queen with a picnic and, of course, we have the Village Day in July. Bashley itself is slowly changing. With a few building projects underway the new store is a huge bonus to the village. Bucking the trend of many villages whose shops have closed, Bashley is having a brand new store. Best wishes to Den and Carol for a successful venture. We'll be back in the Summer for further reports and updates. David Avery Bashley Village Stores Most of you will probably have seen the view above the hoarding - well this is the view behind the same hoarding. The build is progressing very well despite the weather but we are still subject to a couple of weeks delay. A customer commented that a new build always included an eraser - we now understand what he meant. Numerous things have been penciled in, plans and timescales drawn up. Someone else has had other ideas and due to us not having control of that “great tap in the sky” the eraser has been our hand as often as wellies have been on your feet!! However, thanks to the huge efforts of Mike, George and all the others, they are in the dry. The floor has been laid and discussions are now about electricians, plasterers, landscaping and shop fitters - the “curtains and cushions” sort of talk. We've been told that means there is still as much to do as has been done - it's just you feel you may be nearly there. The opening of the new shop will hopefully take place at the end of April (this year!) but this still has to be inked in rather than penciled in. The new shop (it is only a shop and detached from the current premises), will be a larger version of the shop at present including a secure area post office. We would like to once again thank you for your continued support and encouragement and hope to see you all in the new shop soon. Bashley Craft Market 2015
Last November saw our secondChristmas Craft Market take placewhich was well supported by visitorsand stall holders alike. The daylongevent provided an opportunity to findthat extra special lovingly crafted gift, ina friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Nocrowds nor parking problems usuallyassociated with festive shopping. Onoffer was that all important "somethingdifferent".
Amongst the array of handmade itemson show were stunning stained glassornaments, cushions and textiles byOystercatcher Artizan. Stylish bags fromBag Loft and beautiful cards for alloccasions by Arty Crafts. There wassilver beaded jewellery, intricatepatchwork, nature themed and retroinspired soft furnishings. Alongside thesewere soft toys, household goods andhand knitted clothing - in fact somethingfor everyone.
Our in-house cafe was a popularstopping point to peruse purchaseswhilst partaking of our delicious cakes,snacks and other festive goodies. Thechildren's free to enter craftcompetition to design a stained glassstar had some fabulous entries. Thisgave our judge a difficult task to comeup with a winner. The finished artworkswere on display as part of the hall'sChristmas decorations.
This year's Craft Market takes place onSunday 20th November. Do come alongfor unique gifts for those special friends
and family. We look forward to seeingyou there.

Longer serving members of the villagehall management committee weresaddened to learn of the death of AlanMogg last November. Alan had been adirector of local building company H.Drew for many years. He had been aloyal supporter of Bashley Village Hallserving as Treasurer for a long period.
Following retirement he moved toRomsey but continued his associationwith the hall making the trip regularly toattend meetings. Failing health causedhim to give up driving especially aswinter conditions through the forestproved daunting.
His efforts and support were muchvalued enabling the hall to progress,especially when volunteers were inshort supply. His expertise as Treasurerwas particularly valued and our thoughtsremain with his family.

Christmas Party 2015
Bashley Village Hall kicked off the partyseason last December.
The Christmas Party has proved to beone of the highlights of our eventscalendar. Our most recent celebrationonce again did not disappoint. Under thewatchful eye of the angel atop the 12foot Christmas tree, over 120 residentsand friends were treated to a superbevening's entertainment. A buffet supperprepared by members of the committeewas accompanied by a bar courtesy ofthe Rising Sun. A free drink welcomedeveryone and proceedings began withculinary advice from Bill Wallace withthe "aid" of a bottle of whisky – hic.
The 50 strong Encore choir providedexcellent festive music and their sheernumbers tested our logisticalcapabilities. Members of the BashleyW.I. provided numerous hilarioussketches which showcased their
comedic talents. Santa made anappearance to the delight of thosechildren present and dispensed gifts. TheChristmas Hat competition wasenthusiastically entered and June Cookwas announced as winner of the BashleyPrize for Poetry 2015. For those unableto make it, ensure you have a freeSaturday in December this year andcome along.
Seniors 2015 Tea Party
We were delighted with the response toour invite to senior members of ourcommunity to come to a tea party lastNovember at no cost. An array of cakes,sandwiches, sweets, trifles greeted ourguests who tucked in with relish andappreciation. We are well aware at thistime of year evening excursions are noteveryone's idea of fun. So a 2 pm startproved ideal as our visitors could getback home before dark.
A musical duo provided songs fromyesteryear to which most were able tojoin in and sing along. There werenumerous winners of the raffle prizes.Judging by the feedback the afternoonwas a stunning success which was theoriginal idea of our committee memberMargaret Christopher. We'll do it allagain on November 16th this year.Don't miss out, come along and meetfriends you don't get the chance to seevery often for a chat.

The Rising Sun – a new eradawns!
Although not obvious from outside, thislocal hostelry has undergone 4 weeks ofextensive post Christmas improvements.This follows the work done last yearwhen the toilets were upgraded andbetter family facilities were put in place:this was not the end of the story. Inaddition to the 2015 improvements thekitchen has been seriously upgraded.The pub has been decorated throughoutand an attention to detail implementedto improve the experience of dinninghere. The favourites on the menu willremain but new dishes will be on offer.Come along, give us a try, see somefamiliar faces and also new ones.
Everyone is dedicated to satisfying yourdemands. The Rising Sun is not just aholidaymaker's pub but a real local.
Recipe Spring 2016
Cup o' tea cake!
Ingredients
8 oz mixed fruit plus a handful of mixedpeel4 oz granulated sugar1/2 pint of strong tea8 oz. self raising flour1 small egg
Method
In a large bowl mix the fruit, peel andsugar together with the tea, cover andsoak overnight. Preheat the oven to 160c/ Gas 4 ( lower if using a fan oven.) Stirthe mixture thoroughly then add eggand flour and beat well. Grease and linea 2lb loaf tin and pour in the mixture.Cook in the centre of the oven forabout 1 hour. Leave to cool and thenslice and add butter. Serve with acuppa.

Bashley VillageThe village of Bashley has a long andinteresting history of settlement andfarming. The name Bashley derives fromOld English. It was originally'Baylokesleya' or 'Bageslucesleia' which isunderstood to mean Bagloc's woodlandclearing.
Bashley has the earliest documentedreference anywhere in the whole of theparish. In 1053 the Christchurch PrioryCartulary records a "gift by King Edwardand neighbouring peoples, to his faithfulthegn Lutrise of half a mansa at a placein English called Bageslucesleia withfields, pastures, meadows and woods.He may bequeath it to whomever hepleases, and hold it free from all serviceexcept bridge and fortress building andmilitary service".
The 1068 Domesday book records thatBashley was held by a priest ofChristchurch called Alsi. The area ofBashley is described as being of 3virgates (about 90 acres) it had land forone plough. It was held in lordship with2 slaves, a villager and a smallholder. Thevalue of the area was 20 shillings.
Christchurch priory held ownership ofpart of Bashley until the dissolution ofthe monasteries. There is a record in1262 of William Boscher holding land atBashley. This later passed to his sonRobert.
Bashley Common was enclosed, in 1817,by agreement rather than by act ofparliament. The Tithe map shows JamesBrett as being a significant landowner ofthe time.
Opposite Ferndene Farm Shop is acottage once owned by the LoaderFamily. The building now used as agarage was the Smithy. In this imagetaken in about 1910 you can see MrCharles Loader and his apprentice a MrHaskell. The Loader family still live andwork in Bashley. They run a successfulgarage and car repair business oppositethe Post Office on Bashley CommonRoad.
Bashley Post Office and village store hasbeen in business for well over 110 years.The first post master, Albert James, wasappointed in 1902. He was also a draper,grocer, mealman, tobacconist and soldboots and shoes. Carol and Den whoare the current owners provide asimilarly wide range of goods andservices. This image of the post office istaken in about 1910 and is clearlyrecognisable as the village store oftoday.
The church of St John The Baptist wasbuilt in 1910 in what was called ChurchLane but is now known as St John'sRoad. The church cost a very reasonable£300 to build in brick.
In the vestry is a wonderful hand drawnmemorial to the Bashley villagers whoserved in the Great War. It records thatexactly 100 villagers joined the armedforces and served King and Countrybetween 1914 and 1919.

Bashley has a strong tradition ofhorticulture. In the 1870 Miss A.Bateson set up a plant nursery inBashley Cross Road. She was Britain'sfirst female professional nursery owner.In 1928 on her death Mr Lane took overthe business. The 1928 directory forNew Milton shows six other nurseriesoperating in Bashley. Horticulture is stillrepresented in the village by BashleyPlant Centre and Redcliffe Gardencentre.
With its long history and current rangeof shops and services, a cricket team, afootball club as well as a thriving sociallife centred in the village hall, Bashley iswell worth a visit.

Open Sight - social club forthe visually impairedOpen sight is a social group for anybodysuffering with any form of sightproblems. We meet on the fourthWednesday of the month at BashleyVillage Hall from 2 to 4 pm. Come andmake new friends, enjoy ourentertainment followed by tea and cake.Transport is provided where necessaryby our lovely team of volunteer drivers.

Boundary Commission ChangesThe aim of the Boundary Commission isto try and ensure MPs and Councillorsalike represent an approximate evennumber of voters. Until previouschanges Bashley was linked with NewMilton but at the last review, to ensurethe correct number of electors in theBrockenhurst division, Bashley wasmoved into that division.
The current boundary review tries toreorganise the New Forest area andreduce the number of CountyCouncillors from 11 to 10. It will have aknock on effect especially aroundLyndhurst and Brockenhurst where
several wards will change again.Responding to the government studiesI've suggested Bashley returns NewMilton. This would include not justBashley village, but take in the Fernhillarea. This would retain the status quo ifaccepted. We await the outcome of theBoundary Commission's deliberationswith bated breath so watch this space.

Speeding through Bashley!We all need transport whether for theschool run or shopping, and largecommercial vehicles can be veryintimidating. Whatever the use it has anet effect on the environment andpleasant villages like Bashley. Theseplaces were around long beforemechanised transport but now we haveto co-exist. Control must be applied tothe minority of selfish drivers whoignore the well established speed limits.For years the temptation to speedthrough Bashley went unchecked until alocal campaign achieved a limit of 30mph and occasional police checks wereimplemented.
Sadly due to police economiesinfrequent checks are now made andmore attention is given to high trafficflow situations. A half-way housesolution is the portable "speed indicatordevice", known as a SID, which flashesup the speed of the vehicle in question.Any reasonable driver will accept thewarning with gratitude as it could avoida prosecution. These devices can belocated at a spot for a limited periodand have been proved to be costeffective. Local councillors are pushingfor the SID to be situated either inBashley Road or Bashley Common Roadmore frequently. Bashley Common Roadin particular is a speeding temptationbecause it is long and straight. In thismatter I have the support of CountyCouncillor Ken Thornber. More 30 mphsigns on the road would offer a cheapreminder to drivers.

Jayne RotherAt the age of 24, Jayne started her ownrestaurant in Bridport, Dorset.Specialising in seasonal menus, using onlylocal produce of fresh fish and seafood,organic lamb and beef with an array offresh fruits and vegetables. Her jewellery is made using gemstones,pearls, glass beads and wire and rangesin style from a simple bead necklace tobespoke wedding jewellery. She isalways experimenting with new designsand is quite happy to make anything toorder, all at affordable prices.
The shop also stocks a range of gifts,some made by other local crafts peopleincluding hand knitted hats and babyclothes, local produce - jams, pickles,honey and fudge - many of which havethe New Forest Marque. Other itemsinclude handbags, scarves and greetingscards.

Nicola’s Craft & Gift ShopHaving worked in offices all my life I hadreached the point where I was lookingfor a new challenge. I had heard thatthere was an empty retail unit at SammyMiller’s Motorcycle Museum andsomehow I found myself with a newbusiness wondering how on earth it hadhappened so suddenly. New Milton EaglesNew Milton Eagles Youth Football Clubwas established in 1986 and has been anFA Charter Standard Club since 2009.We have teams who play in theBournemouth Youth Football Leaguefrom Under 7's to Under 9's and ourUnder 14 Girls team play in theWinchester Girls League. We also run aFootball for Fun Programme for 4 and 5year old boys and girls.
New Milton Eagles YFC fully support theFA's philosophy that football for youngchildren should be about fun, enjoyment,encouraging physical activity, developingpersonal skills and helping children tobuild relationships through being part ofa team. We are not just interested inthe “Best Players” but encourage playersof all abilities to participate. Our aim isto keep annual registration fees to aminimum by running fundraisingactivities throughout the year, which weusually hold at Bashley Village Hall, asthis is an excellent venue.
All our teams train on Friday evening,except our under 14 girls who train onWednesday evening. As a CharterStandard Club all our team managers are
qualified to FA Level One and we haveone manager qualified to FA Level 2.We are currently sending our managerson the FA Youth Module course tomaintain our club's development in linewith the FA's guidelines for CharterStandard Clubs.
We also encourage parent participationto help create a family orientated clubthat emphasises the importance of beingpart of a team. The club is alwayspleased to welcome people who areinterested in helping to continuegrowing New Milton Eagles YFC into aclub that all our players can be proud of.

Bashley Cricket ClubHampshire to play T20 game at theBCG
After all the hard work over the pastfew years to upgrade the facilities at thecricket ground then the club has been"rewarded" with the news that they willhost Hampshire against Dorset in a "fullblown" T20 match on Thursday May19th, 5:30pm start. As the match is inpreparation for Hampshire's openingNatWest T20 Blast match againstMiddlesex the following Friday they areexpected to send their "big names" forthis warm up match. So the club ishoping for a big crowd and fine weatherto welcome them to Bashley. A fewdays later, on Sunday the 22nd , Dorsetwill also use the ground for their 50over match against Devon. If thesegames go well then it is hoped it willlead to a long term partnership withDorset to stage games regularly at theBCG.
Looking forward to the new season thenit promises to be a challenging time forthe 1st team with the loss of keybatsmen Richard and James Morris. Ontop of this Aussie Tom Andrews is backhome playing for South Australia, so theteam has lost their leading run scorerand leading wicket taker. Howeverthere are new recruits in the "pipeline"to keep the club competitive in theSouthern Premier League.
With the new grass wickets in play onthe Nursery Ground, the newly
promoted 3rd team will return "home"to play their games with the 5th teammoving to Ballard School as part of thecontinuing partnership with the school.

Hall improvementsAt time of writing we are about tofinalise plans for the new kitchen andbar area in the hall. Thanks to KarenCross from KEEDESIGN for all herefforts in bringing together everyone'sthoughts and ideas. It has been a longroad but we will shortly put out thework for tender and get it done thisSummer. Our lighting specialist is aboutto produce a solution to ourrequirements for upgrading the lightingin the main hall. This has also takensome time but we felt it essential to getit right first time. The hall is used by avariety of people many with specificlighting needs. This work will be done assoon as the appropriate contract isawarded.
Bashley WIBashley WI is a well established groupand we have moved with the times thesame way women's lives have changedbut it still focuses on what reallymatters. For many of us in Bashley WIit is an opportunity to share knowledgewith other women and coming togethersocially and to learn new skills
We meet at Bashley Hall on the 2ndThursday of every month (exceptAugust) 2 - 4.15pm and we welcomeanyone who wishes to join us. We haveinteresting speakers and demonstrationseach month covering a wide range ofsubjects. We also have outings, amonthly quilting/patchwork group and awalking group.

Busy BeesAnother busy term at Busy Bees,amongst lots of learning experiences thechildren have been practicing theirnumeracy skills in a variety of ways.They have been learning about theirfamily and friends, which culminated in aGrandparents Morning. Grandparentswere invited to join their grandchildrenfor a morning of arts & craft. Some ofthe activities were hand painting, keyringbead making, and cake decorating.
To raise money for Children in Needand First Opportunities (therapy groupfor under 5s, based at Ashley Juniorschool) Busy Bees completed asponsored wellie walk. We walked fromBusy Bees in St. Johns road into theBashley woods and onto the play park atBashley Hoburne. The children had tolook for chalk drawn arrows on thetrees to find their way there and back.
The children enjoyed a Christmas craftday, using their senses when makinggingerbread cookies, practicing their finemotor skill whilst gluing and sticking, anda variety of other activities. FatherChristmas made a visit during theirChristmas party and they were soexcited to see him. The term endedwith our Nativity which we werefortunate to be able to hold in St. JohnsChurch, which made this event evenmore special.
