1 Bashley Village Hall N E W S L E T T E R Delivered free to all Bashley residents Autumn 2016 Supported by Hampshire County Council Charity No. 301728 Village Hall Improvements After much discussion building work finally began at the end of August. The aim is to install a new kitchen in the committee room and then create a meeting room in what was the old kitchen area. The bar is also being significantly upgraded and the main hall lights are being replaced with the latest LED lighting. The improvements are necessary to update our facilities and in the case of the lighting, make them more energy efficient. Karen Cross from Kee Design has planned the project having taken many views into consideration. Following refurbishments to the toilet area a little while ago this is part of the overall strategy to modernise the building which has seen many years of service. Tim Wheeler from local building firm Bishops Home Improvements is undertaking the project which is expected to take around 6 weeks to complete. Improving the main hall lighting has been a difficult task, with a variety of hall users requirements being taken into account. These range from Art and Dance Classes through to birthday parties and quiz evenings. Efforts are being made to minimise any disruption to classes whilst the work is carried out. Once completed everyone will benefit and it is hoped it will appeal to new users of the hall as it remains a prime asset to Bashley. Mango, Tomato and AvocadoSalsa

Betty and I are on a health kick, andlosing a few kilograms, by eating morehealthily and getting more exercise. Thiswas prompted by my discovery of JoeWicks, the “Body Coach”. He advocatessensible eating and High IntensityInterval Training as exercise to get theheart rate up. No food types are

banned, but carbohydrate intake shouldbe reduced on non-exercise days. Avery simple philosophy, and it works!Fresh food tastes great and is worth thesmall extra effort. Try this with a leansirloin steak, a seared tuna steak - oreven as a cooler alongside a chickencurry. Use quantities to suit your tasteand number of guests!

Mango (or nectarine works well)Tomatoes (de-seeded)AvocadoRed onionRed chilli (finely sliced, de-seeded)Fresh limeFresh coriander (roughly chopped)Olive oil

Cut the mango, tomato and avocadointo approximate 1 cm cubes, finelychop the red onion and thinly slice thechilli. Mix gently together with corianderleaves. Squeeze in lime to taste and adda splash of olive oil. Adjust seasoning.Allow to rest for the flavours to blend.

The "DFL"s *

Back in August, 2015 - my parents andmy family (having sold both ourbungalows) decided to travel down tothe New Forest from Ruislip, a north-west London borough, to have a look atsome potential properties. We spenttwo days looking at approximately tenproperties in total - but only one tickedall our boxes - and as you can imaginebetween my parents, myself and myhusband and our two growing children,we had a lot of boxes to tick. Thathouse was called Holm House in thevillage of Bashley.

We moved five weeks later, andthankfully due to the kindness of Neiland Betty, we were able to get straightinto Holm House and make it our home.

We were amazed at the beautifulsurrounding views of the forest and thelocality of the beaches. The childrensettled into their school at Hordle andmade friends immediately. Havingworked in a school, it felt strange to meto walk about and not know anyone, butI went to coffee mornings and alsostarted to make friends. Our daughterFreya's dream had been to learn tohorse-ride, and how lucky we were tohave Burley Villa on our doorstep. Phil,Lisa and their team have become almostan integral part of our lives withfrequent visits up there after school andmost recently on Saturday mornings fortheir Pony Club.

We started to get to know people inthe village too. From Carol and Den inthe village store, to Paul at Bashley PlantCentre, and even lovely Dean thepostman - we got chatting and westarted to settle into village life. Weeven attended the village quiz, but wedidn't do very well!

Winter brought with it rain! And lots ofit! I took to wearing welliespermanently including to do the schoolrun and to walk round Tesco's.Everyone was keen to tell us that winter

"isn't always like this". After dealingwith some drainage issues in the garden,we were soon enjoying open fires andlots and lots of visitors keen to see ournew country home. Everyone loved itand everyone loved where we lived. Itbecame standard procedure wheneveranyone new came to stay, to spend timelooking on "Right Move" to see whathouses there were for sale.

Spring sprung up with new budsappearing in the garden. It suddenlybecame alive with plants of varying sizesand shapes and colours, and a newfriend we'd made with a penchant forgardening would often come round "justto have a look" at our blossomingflowers and plants. Our son Ben gotaccepted into the secondary school thathe wanted, and we started to preparefor another new adventure. Webecame local members of HoburneBashley, and started to take the childrenswimming on a Sunday afternoon.

It was during spring that we got to knowour lovely neighbours, on both sides andopposite, a little better. We countourselves as extremely lucky to live nextdoor to friends with lots of animals, andthe children have benefited withspending time with them, feeding themand watching them grow. Three littlepigs arrived and have entertained usconstantly with their antics. Spring alsobrought with it some internal works tothe house, during which mum and dad,and the two children moved out for aweek to stay in Shorefields Holiday Park.

Spring stretched into summer - andwhat a summer we had. I accepted ajob in Hordle school in the summerterm, just as Ben prepared to leave. Wewent to village fetes and days out - wethoroughly enjoyed Open Farm Sunday. We even put up bunting and a flag tohelp celebrate Bashley Village Day. Dadand Ben started to support Bashley'sfootball team on a regular basis, andthey then started to win matches!! Theschool summer holidays took us to

4

Devon for a few nights - we had a lovelytime, but for the first time ever, wewere coming home to a place that wasjust as nice (if not a little nicer) thanwhere we had been staying. Ourbeautiful Holm House in Bashley reallyhad become home and we realised quitehow settled we were.

Now, the nights are starting to draw in,and autumn is on its way - and with itwill come our year anniversary. Wehave all truly loved our first year inBashley and have all been drawn to thecloseness of the sea and the beauty ofthe forest and its ponies. Mum and Irecently attended a church service in St.Johns Church, making a change from ouroccasional Sunday morning jaunt to AllSaint's Church in Hordle. We havebeen struck not only by the beauty ofthis place, but the friendliness of thepeople who live here. We have beenwelcomed and included by all we meet, and have not once regretted ourdecision to move to a place that used tobe our holiday destination when I was alittle girl. We have got used to thetraffic jams caused by cyclists, horsesand tractors - how much nicer thantraffic jams caused by cars! We stillpoint out the ponies when we drivethrough the open forest, and we stillcan't get over the breathtaking views ofthe Isle of Wight from places such asHordle Cliff and the Needles Eye Cafe.

We feel very lucky and blessed to livehere. Thank you Bashley.

Following months of hard work theorganisers, together with everyoneinvolved, were delighted with the warmsunshine on 16th July. Specific effortwent into ensuring car parking wasimproved from previous years and thiswas a real success. The Army cadetsproved invaluable by ensuring themaximum number of vehicles could beaccommodated on site. We areindebted to the Highcliffe Rotary Clubwho provided both tents and manpowerto erect them. The variety ofentertainment on offer proved aspopular as ever. The relocated stagemeant the articulated lorry usedpreviously, was rested this time. Slimming World

Weight loss expert Janice Higsonrevealed that a new Slimming Worldsurvey of 1,722 slimmers found thatalmost everyone who had tried to loseweight in the past (98%) hadexperienced a slip-up where they wentoff-track in a way that they worriedwould affect their weight loss journey. After they lapsed, 84% of slimmersautomatically criticised themselves, calling themselves 'weak', 'stupid' and 'afailure' - words they would never haveused to describe someone else in theirposition. This harsh criticism was foundto lead to comfort eating or giving up onthose diets completely. As a result, 78%were unsuccessful with their weight loss, with at least 47% gaining weight.

The survey found that at SlimmingWorld members learnt how to becomeless self critical when they go wrong, and instead they have become more selfassured. As a result of recognising thatthey're only human and applauding theirown determination, the research foundthat Slimming World members are nowless likely to comfort eat and more likelyto get back on track within a day ortwo, and more likely to lose weight andkeep it off. In the survey, 84% ofSlimming World members went on tolose weight after a lapse.

Janice who lost 4 stone and now helpsothers to shed the pounds, says: "Assomeone who had struggled with myweight for many years I had tried lots ofdifferent diets in the past. Life wouldalways get in the way at some pointthough and I'd go off track. It wouldknock my confidence and I'd end upfeeling like a failure and like I couldn'tstick at anything.

"When you have an unhealthyrelationship with food, as I did at thetime, comfort eating can feel like theonly way to make yourself feel better.I'd turn to comfort food but afterwards

I'd feel even more guilty and empty andbefore long I'd have given up completely.

"Since joining Slimming World myoutlook has changed completely. Withthe support of other people who haveexperienced the same thing I graduallystarted to realise that I wasn't the onlyone who this happened to. We're allhuman and we all have our off days, theimportant thing is that we are ableforgive ourselves and draw a line.

"Now if I ever have a lapse I'm careful toalways talk to myself as I would any ofthe members of my group - withencouragement, support and withoutany judgement or blame. And that's whythe support of a group is so important,as by sharing problems and solutionswith other people, you realise thatyou're really not alone and you have anetwork of people like you who reallyunderstand and care, to help pick youback up when things go wrong. After all, things will often go wrong, and learningto cope with lapses, forgive yourself andget back on track is the key tosuccessful weight loss in the long-term”.

Bashley Football Club

I have been fortunate throughout my lifeto have occupations that involved travel. It is also indicative of our data-drivenage that cartographic knowledge issomewhat limited. When overseas andquestioned as to where I live, I usuallyhave to start with London as a referencepoint, as 'between Lymington andChristchurch or even Southampton andBournemouth' is as meaningless toNorth Americans as between 'GreatFalls and Billings' would be to us.Surprisingly this lack of geographicawareness is not just confined to othercountries. How many people outside ofHampshire know where New Milton is?But mention Bashley, and the curtain ofignorance is often lifted. Ah, Bashleydidn't they play Swansea in the FA Cup?

Apart from football fanatics not manypeople realise the impact that BashleyFootball Club has had and still hasoutside of the New Forest. Who canforget the many mentions in the DailyMail column of the late, great IanWoolridge or the days when Bashleywere included in the Football Pools andthe results given out on the Five O'clockNews. Even last season our unparalleledlack of success in NOT winning washighlighted on TV as far apart as theUSA and Australia. Yet, despite a doublerelegation the club is still part of the FA

structure, which by promotion, is aseamless path to the top of the PremierLeague - although Leicester need notworry for the time being.

Many locals will remember that theglory days of The Bash were funded by anumber of local businesses who changeda village team, founded in 1947, into asuccessful professional football club. Aclub that attracted to Bashley Recplayers of the calibre of Liverpool andSouthampton legend Jimmy Case as bothplayer and manager; a club who in justone week in 1979 spent £15,000 onthree new players, the equivalent of£77,000 today. Those days have gone ashave the money men and with it therealisation than our position in thehigher division of the Southern Leaguewas no longer sustainable. As relegationfollowed relegation the club was facedby closure and only saved by thededication of a small number ofsupporters.

Today, there is a new Bashley, acommunity club, now under the controlof an Executive Committee made up offormer fans with a remit to drive theclub forward by good managementpractice, hard work and resourcefulness.Their task has been helped by theappointment of Tom Prodomo as TeamManager. Tom (in his spare time!) isHead of Brockenhurst College FootballAcademy, a UEFA Licensed coach andan appointed member of the EnglishColleges FA National Coaching Staff. This season we are running three teams:The First Team compete in the WessexPremier, the Reserve Team in theWyvern Combination League and, inco-operation with BrockenhurstCollege, an U19 team in the FootballConference Youth Alliance League. Allthree leagues are very competitive andregionally based although the U19 dotravel as far as London for somematches; the Reserve team with fixturesagainst National League sidesBasingstoke, Eastleigh and Gosport onthe cards are especially attractive.

10

The Wessex League covers an areacentred on Hampshire and includingDorset and Wiltshire. The advantagesover the Southern League, whichnecessitated trips stretching as far asTruro and Kings Lynn, is the saving ontravel costs and a welcome end toarriving home in the early hours. It hasalso helped sponsorship as the Bashleyname and shirt now circumnavigatesmany local catchment areas. Anopportunity quickly spotted by BartleyForest Farm who by sponsoring ourshirts and training kit has alreadyopened up new markets for its retailoutlet.

To coin a phrase that appears on one ofour buildings the 'Buzz is Back'. We areattracting good, local, players drawn tothe club by the improved facilities on

offer (our home dressing room has tobe seen to be believed), by the expertiseand professionalism of our coaching andsports therapy staff and by thecapabilities of our management andadministrative volunteers. You will notethe absence of the word 'money' Ournew executive committee is committedto self-sufficiency and all outgoings haveto be met by money raised by the cluband beholden to none. So our energy isdirected to forming partnerships so thatall sponsorship opportunities, be it foran advert in the programme, anadvertising board, the match ball, a nameon a shirt, the hiring of the clubhouse orpaying to watch a match are seen asvalue for money. This will depend onour performance on and off the pitchand local exposure gained by success

and reputation. Bartley Forest Farm, whose logo and name is blazed on ourshirts and training wear, being a case inpoint.

As I write Bashley have just won theiropening match of the season, their firsthome win for 53 matches, followed by asecond win and victory in the FA Cup!The light at the end of the tunnel issuddenly getting brighter. Bashley FChave a great past and an uncertain futurebut may have just found its rightfulhome as a community and youth footballdevelopment club. Why not come andsee for yourselves.

Real Christmas trees fromBashleyAt the Bashley Plant Centre we growmost of our own Christmas trees. Wegrow 2 varieties Norway Spruce ( PiceaAbies ) and Nordman Spruce ( AbiesNordmanniana ). Most are field grownbut about one hundred are grown inpots. Some of the field grown trees aredug up with a good root ball thenrepotted in a larger pot surrounded byour tree and shrub compost. This willensure a good start for any furthergrowth.

We plant about three hundred bareroot young Christmas trees annually inour field which ensures that we have agood rotation of crop and sizes tochoose from at the festive season. Inaddition to this we buy in larger treesfrom other local growers these areoften used to decorate hotels, pubs, churches and village halls. Our ownvillage hall in Bashley will have a 12 foottree again this year.

A question often asked is " How can Iprevent needle drop? " The answer tothis is cut about 10 mm from the base ofthe tree once you get it home. Place itin a container which will hold water asthe tree can absorb around a pint of

water per week. There really is nothinglike a locally grown Christmas tree. Youcan order one from us in advance asthey will be ready from 25th Novemberthis year. Or just turn up as we will haveplenty to choose from.

The weather wasnot on our side, and on the firstmorning of opening a veritable river wasrunning through the marquee where theunfortunate ladies serving food werepositioned. Wellington boots weredefinitely the footwear of choice.

The weather was not the only problem,on the same morning one of the lightbulbs in the church exploded with greatforce and fused the electricity justbefore opening time. Luckily help wason hand or rather on a step ladderperched across the pews, thankgoodness no - one from Health andSafety was in the vicinity. We also had aminor catastrophe when the enormousarrangement in the window above thealtar slowly toppled forward, but being aFlower Festival there were Florists andex Florists on hand who quickly andexpertly repaired the damage.Admission was free but our visitorswere very generous in their donationsboth in the Church and across the roadwhen viewing the beautiful garden of

Windmill House. There was also a verypopular plant stall, a stall selling beautifulwood carvings by the Wichi Indiansfrom Northern Argentina and our rafflewhich had two holidays in Cornwallamong other prizes. Along withgenerous sponsorship from, amongothers, Trans Am, Loaders Garage andDots and Stripes we raised the sum of£2,342.

The Church members would like tothank everyone who helped in any wayto make our Flower Festival a success. If you would like to join us in ourworship, services are Choral Evensongon the first Sunday of each month at6.30pm and Holy Communion on thethird Sunday of each month at 11.00am.Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals byarrangement.
