Basic Design Criteria for Precast Structures

1. Concrete compressive strength shall be 4,000 PSI minimum @ 28 days.

2. Lateral load design of substructure is based on AASHTO load factor design method.

3. Use a 30% impact factor for traffic loads per AASHTO.

4. Design substructure for HS 20-44 traffic wheel loads per AASHTO as last revised.

5. Design assumes that lateral soil pressure includes a 2' - 0" live load surcharge per ASTM C857-92.

6. Yield strength of the reinforcing steel shall be 60,000 PSI Grade 60 and shall be in accordance with ASTM A-615.

7. Design substructure in accordance with ACI 318-89, AASHTO fifteenth edition and ASTM C 857-92 where applicable.

Reinforced Concrete Pipe

Throughly clean thespigot includinggasket recess.

Lubricate spigot,especially gasketrecess.

Lubricate the gasketbefore it is put in therecess.

Equalize stretch of gasketcompletely around thepipe as shown.

Throughly clean theinside surface of thebell and entry taper.

Lubricate bell, especiallythe entry taper on theouter edge of the bell.

Align the spigot andbell. Gasket should beflush with entire entrytaper before pushingthe pipe home.

Be sure the entire pipe andjoint are adequately supportedby proper bedding. Do notforce pipe to grade withbackhoe bucket or otherdevice.

UsesPrecast box sections are recommended for installations where circular concrete pipe cannotprovide adequate flow capacity, and as a superior substitute for cast-in-place box culverts,long span metal arches, short bridges and multi-barrel circular culverts or drains.

SizesPrecast box sections are normally available in spans of 3 feet through 12 feet, with a varietyof rises. Spans up to 20 feet are available in some markets.

ApplicationsPrecast box sections can be used for the following:● highway culverts● railroad culverts● short span highway bridges● storm drains● livestock, pedestrian or golf cart undercrossing● utility tunnels● underground stormwater retention structures● groundwater recharge systems● to replace existing open channels or ditches, and enable land to be used productively● jacked or tunneled installations.
