"Hoʻoponopono"isdefinedintheHawaiianDictionaryas

"mentalcleansing:familyconferencesinwhichrelationships

weresetrightthroughprayer,discussion,confession,

repentance,andmutualrestitutionandforgiveness."Literally,

hoʻoisaparticleusedtomakeanactualizingverbfromthe

followingnoun,aswould"to"beforeanouninEnglish.Here,it

createsaverbfromthenounpono,whichisdefinedas:

...goodness,uprightness,morality,moralqualities,corrector

properprocedure,excellence,well-being,prosperity,welfare,

benefit,trueconditionornature,duty;moral,fitting,proper,

righteous,right,upright,just,virtuous,fair,beneficial,successful,

inperfectorder,accurate,correct,eased,relieved;should,ought,

must,necessary.

shape,correct,revise,adjust,amend,regulate,arrange,rectify,

PreeminentHawaiianscholarMaryKawenaPukuiwrotethatit

wasapracticeinAncientHawaii,andthisissupportedbyoral

historiesfromcontemporaryHawaiianelders.

Pukuidescribeditasapracticeofextendedfamilymembers

meetingto"makeright"brokenfamilyrelations.Somefamilies

metdailyorweekly,topreventproblemsfromerupting.

Othersmetwhenapersonbecameill,believingthatillnesswas

causedbythestressofanger,guilt,recriminationsandlackof

forgiveness.

Hoʻoponoponocorrects,restoresandmaintainsgood

relationshipsamongfamilymembers,andwiththeirgodsor

MorrnahSimeona,bornMay19,1913anddiedFebruary11,

1992,isrecognizedasthefirstkahunalapaʻau(healer)to

createanupdatedmodernversionoftheancient

ho’oponoponopractice.Shesharedthismodernversionof

hoʻoponoponothroughouttheUnitedStates,AsiaandEurope.

Morrnahwasapractitioneroflomilomimassage,andfor10

yearssheownedandoperatedhealthspasattheKahalaHilton

andRoyalHawaiianhotels.Atthesespas,shewouldcombine

herhealingformofho’oponoponoandmassagetoavastarray

ofclients,manyofwhichwerecelebrities,includingLyndonB.

Johnson,JackieKennedyandArnoldPalmer.

Inthemid-70s,throughDivineinspiration,shebeganto

modifythetraditionalHawaiianforgivenessandreconciliation

processofhoʻoponoponototherealitiesofthemodernday.

PrayingtotheDivineCreatorandconnectingproblemswith

ReincarnationandKarmaresultedinauniquenewproblem

solvingprocess:thatwasself-helpratherthanthetraditional

Hawaiiangroupprocess.Hersystemuseshoʻoponopono

techniquestocreateaworkingpartnershipamongthethree

Twoyearsago(2003),IheardaboutatherapistinHawaiiwho

curedacompletewardofcriminallyinsanepatients--without

everseeinganyofthem.Thepsychologistwouldstudyan

inmate'schartandthenlookwithinhimselftoseehowhe

createdthatperson'sillness.Asheimprovedhimself,the

patientimproved.

WhenIfirstheardthisstory,Ithoughtitwasanurbanlegend.

Howcouldanyonehealanyoneelsebyhealinghimself?How

couldeventhebestself-improvementmastercurethe

criminallyinsane?

Itdidn'tmakeanysense.Itwasn'tlogical,soIdismissedthe

story.

However,Ihearditagainayearlater.Iheardthatthetherapist

hadusedaHawaiianhealingprocesscalledho'oponopono.

Ihadneverheardofit,yetIcouldn'tletitleavemymind.Ifthe

storywasatalltrue,Ihadtoknowmore.

Ihadalwaysunderstood"totalresponsibility"tomeanthatI

amresponsibleforwhatIthinkanddo.Beyondthat,it'soutof

myhands.Ithinkthatmostpeoplethinkoftotalresponsibility

thatway.We'reresponsibleforwhatwedo,notwhatanyone

elsedoes.TheHawaiiantherapistwhohealedthosementally

illpeoplewouldteachmeanadvancednewperspectiveabout

totalresponsibility.

hourtalkingonourfirstphonecall.Iaskedhimtotellmethe

completestoryofhisworkasatherapist.Heexplainedthathe

workedatHawaiiStateHospitalforfouryears.Thatward

Psychologistsquitonamonthlybasis.Thestaffcalledinsicka

lotorsimplyquit.Peoplewouldwalkthroughthatwardwith

theirbacksagainstthewall,afraidofbeingattackedby

patients.Itwasnotapleasantplacetolive,work,orvisit.

Dr.Lentoldmethatheneversawpatients.Heagreedtohave

anofficeandtoreviewtheirfiles.Whilehelookedatthose

files,hewouldworkonhimself.Asheworkedonhimself,

patientsbegantoheal.

"Afterafewmonths,patientsthathadtobeshackledwere

beingallowedtowalkfreely,"hetoldme."Otherswhohadto

beheavilymedicatedweregettingofftheirmedications.And

thosewhohadnochanceofeverbeingreleasedwerebeing

freed."

ThisiswhereIhadtoaskthemilliondollarquestion:"What

wereyoudoingwithinyourselfthatcausedthosepeopleto

change?"

"Iwassimplyhealingthepartofmethatcreatedthem,"he

Ididn'tunderstand.

Dr.Lenexplainedthattotalresponsibilityforyourlifemeans

thateverythinginyourlife-simplybecauseitisinyourlife--is

yourresponsibility.Inaliteralsensetheentireworldisyour

creation.

Whew.Thisistoughtoswallow.BeingresponsibleforwhatI

sayordoisonething.Beingresponsibleforwhateveryonein

mylifesaysordoesisquiteanother.Yet,thetruthisthis:ifyou

takecompleteresponsibilityforyourlife,theneverythingyou

see,hear,taste,touch,orinanywayexperienceisyour

responsibilitybecauseitisinyourlife.

Thismeansthatterroristactivity,thepresident,theeconomy--

anythingyouexperienceanddon'tlike--isupforyoutoheal.

Theydon'texist,inamannerofspeaking,exceptasprojections

frominsideyou.Theproblemisn'twiththem,it'swithyou,and

tochangethem,youhavetochangeyou.

Iknowthisistoughtograsp,letaloneacceptoractuallylive.

Blameisfareasierthantotalresponsibility,butasIspokewith

Dr.Len,Ibegantorealizethathealingforhimandin

Turnsoutthatlovingyourselfisthegreatestwaytoimprove

yourself,andasyouimproveyourself,yourimproveyour

world.Letmegiveyouaquickexampleofhowthisworks:one

day,someonesentmeanemailthatupsetme.InthepastI

wouldhavehandleditbyworkingonmyemotionalhot

buttonsorbytryingtoreasonwiththepersonwhosentthe

nastymessage.Thistime,IdecidedtotryDr.Len'smethod.I

WheneverIspendtimewithDr.HewLen,I'mremindedofthe

fundamentalsbehindZeroLimitsandho'oponopono:

! There'snothingtodobutclean.

! Themoreyouclean,themoreyoucanreceiveinspiration

fromtheDivine.

! There'seitherMemoryorInspiration,andusuallyit’s

Memory(data).

! Theonlythingtocleaniswhatyoufeelinside.

! Theonlygoalisfreedom;tobeatZero.

Knowingthefundamentalsisonething,livingthemisquite

another.Thisiswhyweneedbooks,audios,DVDs,tools,

seminars,coaches,andwhateverelsewecanusetoremindus

thatalltheworktakesplacewithin.

Theworldismadeupof“data”andit’sthatverydatathat

needscleaned.Thethingis,weperceiveallthatdatainside

ourselves,sothat'swherethecleaninghastotakeplace.

Inotherwords,there'snothing“outthere.”It'sallinsideyou.

That'swhereyouexperienceproblemsandthat'swherethe

cleaningneedsdone.

Butwhatistherightwaytoclean?

Ifcleaningisthenumberonemostimportantthingtodoandis

thecoreoftheentireZeroLimitsprocess,howdoyoudoit

1. Inoticesomethingwrong.Thiscanbetriggeredbya

thought,anotherperson,anevent,oranythingelse.

Thisisthestimulus.BeforeZeroLimits,noticinga

Limits,yourealizetheproblemisinside.Whateverthe

3. Isometimesuseothercleaningmethods.Forexample,

thelasttimeIsawDr.HewLen,hegavemeoneofhis

said,“Inyourmindimagineslicingtheproblemup

withtheedgeofthecard.”

4. Iletgountilpromptedtotakeinspiredaction.Dr.Hew

Lenoncetoldmethathecleansonadecisionthree

times.Iftheansweristhesameafterthosecleanings,

hetakesactiononit.ThismeansifIgetanimpulseto

dosomethingtoresolvetheperceivedproblem,Imight

cleanonitthreetimesbeforeIactuallytakeanyaction.

Thisisawaytoinsuretheactioniscomingfrom

inspirationandnotmemory.

5. Repeat.

Everyonewantsashort-cuttocleaningandreachingZero.Ido,
