S- Service to Man Kind

• "Pro Utilitate Hominum" ‑ For the service of Mankind.

• Impossible to be a leader if you do not have people to serve

• Focus on what is needed in the situation and what can help to solve this problem (e.g. Personal improvement to boost corps cohesion)

• What you do today can affect a lot of cadets in the future.

• Do to others what you would like other to do to you. Even if the person does not response the way you want him/her to, try and try again.

• Best method to gain respect and friendship.

Page 6: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

P - Professionalism

• “Do it once, Do it good, Get it done and over with”• Why repeat the same thing over and over again

when it can be done well once? • Repeat doing things = waste of time = less time to

play and do fun stuff = Unhappy instructors and Cadets = Corps will never rise up to new challenge

• Inspire Quality and not Quantity Training for the corps

• Cadets will respect you if you do things professionally, Cadets will question your leadership if they are in doubt of your professionalism and capability.

• Make it a personal challenge to outdo yourself

Page 7: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

I - Integrity

• Be Honest, Last thing Officers/Cadets want from you is a lie. This seriously degrades the trust we all have for you.

• Dare to do it, better dare to own up for your actions. • Accountability is one of the factors the officers look

out for.• Be Consistent with your actions, Your character is

who we like you for. • Do not backstab friend/fellow instructors.

– There is a saying that outsiders know it best and the backstab will always come back to haunt you.

• Do not betray your own moral values just to get things done.

– Very important thing to have when you get into troublesome situations.

– Note that Integrity is the one most important thing that your future boss looks out for. So start learning it now. (e.g. Would you think your boss will be comfortable for you to handle a million dollar deal if he/she questions your integrity?)

Page 8: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

R - Responsibility

• You have a duty to serve the corps• Be accountable for your actions. If you are

given a task to accomplish, Please do it and do what it is needed to accomplish the task at hand.

• Set good example. If you give an order and you want your cadets to follow, make sure you do it yourself too.

• Do not give an unrealistic instruction.

Page 9: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

I – Initiative

• Initiative is about thinking of what needs to be done and doing them without being ask.

• If you are unsure if what you are going to do , ask senior or officer.

• Be willing to take the first step and lead the others.

• Initiative is highly valued by the officers.

• Initiative is also to think out of the box in a difficult situation and take the necessary steps to prevent the situation from getting worse.

Page 10: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

T – Team Work• Bend one chopstick and it will break, Bend a bundle of

chopstick and it is harder to break.• Its impossible for one person to work alone. There is just to

much work/pressure for one to bear.• Corps can only grow by using everyone strength and this

will lead to effective training in corps.• Helping others = helping yourself as its less effort for the

same amount of work = more fun with friends • Effective Teamwork can produce very fascinating results!• Motivate and cheer your friend / instructor on when the

time get tough.• Note: Team work can only happen when everyone on the

team is willing to communicate with each other. So talk to each other about your expectation and what you intend to see out of doing the task ahead.

• Conflicts are common when there is a team. This is a good time to practice on your conflict management skills.

Page 23: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Time Management of Activities

• Buffering Time is Important!!! (Instructor’s Responsibility)

• Each Activity has a 10 minutes buffer. Use this to your advantage. (Instructor needs to manage with their own timing) (Buffer includes any Water/Toilet break that is required)

• Essential to communicate to Instructors/COS if timing needs to be adjusted: Both parties need to be sensitive about it.

• CPS or COS to have the final say in the matter.

• Essential to Command and Control Cadets effectively to minimize disruption activities

planned for the day

25

Post Activity Checklist

25

Page 26: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Command and Control (1)• Be Firm with your Instructions!!!• Example of giving instructions:

– [People that are to listen to this Instruction], Your next Activity is [Activity Name]. you have XX minutes to [things they are suppose to do, Chronically ordered, and be specific]

– Allocate a participant as a timer to ensure timing– Do not give impossible timing– Do not abuse your instruction [Explain more in later slide]

• Ask to ensure they know the instruction to prevent them from doing things wrongly.– Is that clear? – Is my Instructions clear?– Any Questions?

• Get one of the next Event Instructors to assist (Macro Management)– [So and So] , Can you help me take charge of them?– [so and So], Please help me manage them

Page 27: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Command and Control (2)

• Decision making– Start with the end in mind

1. What am I suppose to accomplish?2. Steps to get there?3.Are the steps too vague?

– Yes break down steps further and repeat step 3.– No Give instruction out / perform steps required.

• Don’t analysis till paralysis. Make a calculated decision – No decision is also a form of decision– So long as you do not compromise the safety of the

cadets, any decision is better than no decision– No bad decision, just that there can be better decision.

Learn from mistakes and strive forward. – Quality over Quantity

Page 28: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Command and Control (3)

• Motivation of your actions– Do what is the best for that situation, not do

what will please the people the most

• How to Motivate your cadets – Stretch them (e.g. giving cadet a challenge)– Show that you care (e.g.)– Give recognition (e.g. Giving a complement

(“Well Done in performing that task”))

• Lack of time is not usually the lack of time, but the lack of priority

Page 29: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Command and Control(4)

• Dry Run your materials– Its not good to appear confused in front of the cadets,

they will not know if you are teaching them correctly.

– Ensure that material and what you say does not conflict

• Present in a confident manner (refer to next slide)

• Stop lesson to correct error.– During practical aspect of a training, focus on one person

at a time and correct his/her mistake. Do not let the mistake manifest.

• Be consistent with your expectation with them– Cadets will be confused if you practice double standard

or wavering standards. 29

Page 30: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

How to have Confidence Communication

• Communication breakdown– 7% words

– 38% vocal ( pitch, speed, volume, contact)

– 55% visual ( body language, eye contact)• Shoulder back

• Maintain eye contact

• Arms at side , or used to make effective gestures

• Hands open/slightly close

• Smile slightly or neutral face

• Take long strides

• Purposeful and decided movement

30

Page 31: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Command and Control(5)

• KISS (Keep it short and simple)– Need it be lesson or instruction giving,

keep it short and simple for maximum understanding and efficiency.

• Need to inspire passion into cadets– Leading is not just about making them

do things, it making them do things willingly and happy.

31

Page 32: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Abusing of Power

• You are held accountable (Responsibility) for your actions.

• We take this matter very seriously• Abusing Rank/Power = Disgrace to your rank and

Organization == Abusing the trust the officers & cadets have for you

• Officers will take this up on the case to case basis and will give both side to explain their situation before making a conclusion.

• Should an Instructor be found abusing of rank/power– 1st time : Verbal Warning– 2nd time : Punishment– 3rd time : Demotion of Rank / Removal of Position

Objective

• Objective of this Material is to provide cadets with Step to Step guide on how to perform various treatment.

• Focus on Practical aspect to ensure they are proficient in the skill and need to know why they are performing the treatment this way.

• This material also allows cadets to perform quick revision before test/public duty.

• Materials are to compliment with First Aid Manual provided by NCO Course[BFA and AFA Examination is based on that].

Page 38: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Considerations• Cadets have short attention span (15-20 min

max). Therefore it is essential to change the method of delivery every 15-20 minutes.

• 1 Page per training . If its more than one page, its too much information for one session(Font Size 12 minimum). 1 or 2 Skill set per lesson.

• Game is to ensure they can able to perform the skill that was just taught. if you feel that skill is weak, feedback to Officer & CPS and we will delay starting of new topic.

• Game can be a simple thing (e.g. Fastest Time ,Vs, etc…. ) just to inject some fun into learning.

• But this does not mean you let cadets work on their own pace. You need to push them and motivate them. Balance is the key.

Topic : Wound and Bleeding

Theory:Types of bleedingArterial Bleeding

Bright Red in Colour Spurts from a wound in time with the

heartbeat. Severed main artery may jet blood several

feet high. Rapidly reduce the volume of circulating

blood.Venus Bleeding

Dark Red in Colour Gush profusely.

Capillary Bleeding Oozing at the site of all wounds. Blood loss is usually slight.

Pointers : Please remember the types of bleeding and their characteristics

Treatment Objectives: to identify the type of bleeding

1) Clotting of blood.2) Cut ends of a blood vessel will contract.3) Blood pressure will drop.

Our body’s mechanism to stop bleeding

Page 40: BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Slide Deck Last Updated: 5 th July 2015 Edited By : Corps SO(4) Wilson Cheng Wei SHeng.

Topic : Wound and Bleeding Treatment :

Pointers : If severe bleeding from a limb cannot be controlled by direct pressure, it may be necessary to apply pressure to the pressure points. (Points denoted in Red)

Treatment for Severe External Bleeding1. Direct Pressure2. Elevation and Dressing3. Treat for Shock4. Removal to Hospital.

To expose the wound: Remove or cut clothing to expose

the wound. Watch out for sharp objects, such

as glass, that may injure you.1. Apply direct pressure

Apply direct pressure over the wound with your fingers or palm, preferably over a sterile dressing or clean pad.

2. Elevation and Dressing Raise and support an injured limb

above the level of the casualty’s heart.

Lay the casualty down. Apply sterile dressing. Bandage it in place firmly, but

not so tightly as to impede the circulation.

Removal to hospital:

Dial 995 for an ambulance.

Treat for shock.

Check the dressing for seepage.

Check the circulation beyond the bandage.

1) Press down firmly on either side.2) Build up padding on either side of the object without pressing on it. 3) Secure and support the injured part with bandaging.
