The Our Father (The Lord's Prayer) / Pater Noster (Oratio Dominica)

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done onearth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tres asses as we forgivethose who tres ass against us. !nd lead us not into tem tation, but deliver us from evil.

Latin Version: Pater Noster (Oratio Dominica) "ater noster, #ui es in caelis, sanctificetur Nomen tuum. !dveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua,

sicut in caelo et in terra. "anem nostrum #uotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostrasicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. $t ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo.

Note:%ee &atthew '()*+ and -u e ++(/*0. The 1atholic version rayed in the traditional liturgy does notinclude the concluding 2o3ology said by "rotestants and which is not found in %cri ture( 4For Thine isthe Kingdom, and the ower, and the glory forever, amen.4 This do3ology, though, or at least variationsof it, are found as early as the first century, for e3am le, in the 2idache. The do3ology is used byriests in the new rite of the &ass.

!lso, some 1atholics stri e their breast at the words 4forgive us our tres asses4 5stri ing the breast isthe classic sign of re entance, made formally during the 1onfiteor, the Nobis 6uo#ue "eccatoribus, the !gnus 2ei, and the 2omine, Non %um 2ignus at the &ass, and informally any time to e3 ressregret.7

The $nglish line 4lead us not into tem tation4 is actually a bad translation, as God does not and wouldnot actively 4lead us4 into tem tation, a notion that would ma e Him the !uthor of evil. Though the"ater has been rayed this way in $nglish for hundreds of years and there is no need to change itnow, one must ee in mind that a more literal translation would be 4allow us not to succumb totem tation.4 8ames +(+ *+0( 4-et no man, when he is tem ted, say that he is tem ted by God. ForGod is not a tem ter of evils( and He tem teth no man. 9ut every man is tem ted by his ownconcu iscence, being drawn away and allured.4

    The %i3th Way of "rayer

Our holy father, %aint 2ominic, was also seen to ray standing erect with his hands and armsoutstretched forcefully in the form of a cross. He rayed in this way when God, through hissu lications, raised to life the boy Na oleon in the sacristy of the 1hurch of %aint %i3tus in >ome, and when he was raised from the ground at the celebration of &ass, as the good and holy %ister1ecilia, who was resent with many other eo le and saw him, narrates. He was li e $lias whostretched himself out and lay u on the widow=s son when he raised him to life.

:n a similar manner he rayed near Toulouse when he delivered the grou of $nglish ilgrims fromdanger of drowning in the river. Our -ord rayed thus while hanging on the cross, that is, with hishands and arms e3tended and 4with a loud cry and tears ... he was heard because of his reverentsubmission4 @Hebrews B(IA.

Nor did the holy man 2ominic resort to this manner of raying unless he was ins ired by God to nowthat something great and marvelous was to come about through the ower of his rayer. !lthough hedid not forbid the brethren to ray in this way, neither did he encourage them to do so. We do not nowwhat he said when he stood with his hands and arms e3tended in the form of a cross and raised theboy to life. "erha s it was those words of $lias( 4O -ord, my God, let the soul of this child, : beseechthee, return into his body4 @::: Kings +I(/+A. He certainly followed the ro het=s e3terior manner in hisrayers on that occasion. The friars and sisters, however, as well as the nobles and cardinals, and allothers resent were so struc by this most unusual and astonishing way of rayer that they failed toremember the words he s o e. !fterwards, they did not feel free to as 2ominic about these mattersbecause this holy and remar able man ins ired in them a great sense of awe and reverence byreason of the miracle.

:n a grave and mature manner, he would slowly ronounce the words in the "salter which mention thisway of rayer.
