    1. For there to be true guilt, there must exist

    a valid obligation which truly applies to

    me.

    Healthy and Sick Guilt

    Principles for distinguishing sick and healthy guilt:

    1. Healthy guilt leads toward a richer, fuller life,

    toward greater freedom and toward being more

    alive. Sick guilt leads toward a paralyzing of our

    energies, toward a withdrawal from life.

    2. Healthy guilt is put behind us. It is a part of

    a process of living. It puts us forward in life

    but when we leave it behind us and forget

    about it. Sick guilt stays with us for manyyears.

    3. Healthy guilt does not destroy our respect for

    ourselves. Sick guilt leads to self-hatred.

    4. Sick guilt lead us to be controlled by fear; thefear of making mistakes, the fear of rejecting by

    others, and the fear of what is deep within us.

    In healthy guilt, the self is controlled. Making its

    own rational judgments

    5. Healthy guilt leads to ultimate joy. Sick guilt

    leads to sadness and depression.
