Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends,
As you may know, Pope Francis has declared a “Year of Mercy” to focus on the unlimited mercy of God. This will begin on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, 2015) and end on the Feast of Christ the King (November 20, 2016).
The bishop has chosen 4 churches in the Diocese of Raleigh to be special places of pilgrimage for the Year of Mercy: Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh; Our Lady of Mercy in (“Little”) Washington; Our Lady of Guadalupe in Newton Grove; and, of course, our own Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. I will update you on all of the exciting things that will be happening during this special year as time goes on. I’m delighted to report that Fr. Alex, Pastor of our sister parish of San Francisco de Asís Parish in Reitoca, F.M., Honduras, will be visiting us from November 23rd – December 4th. Finally, remember that the St. Mary Youth Group is selling poinsettias. A contribution of $15 buys not just one for you, but also one for the sick and homebound. Order forms are available in the vestibule of the basilica. Also, the Youth Group will have Christmas Eve luminaries that you can purchase to honor or remember a loved one. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Carolina Catholic November Show For its November show, Carolina Catholic speaks with Father Donald Calloway, MIC, a convert to Catholicism and a member of the Con-gregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. Before his conversion to Catholicism, he was a high school dropout who had been kicked out of a foreign country, institutionalized twice, and thrown in jail multiple times. After his radical conversion, he earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH, M.Div. and S.T.B. degrees from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, and an S.T.L. in Mariology from the International Marian Research Institute in Dayton, Ohio. Father's incredibly honest story of conversion from a hopeless drug abuser to an inspiring priest shows the depth of the mercy of Our Lord. Father also explains the importance of the Year of Mercy, beginning this December 8th on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and the message of mercy for all of us. This inspiring show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on our stations, 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM, Sunday, November 15th at 6 p.m. This show can also be heard on our website at Home by click-ing on the Carolina Catholic tab. Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – November 14 and November 15, 2015 6
Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
During this final month of the Church Year we listen to the Word of God as Jesus tells us stories about the Kingdom here and now, and the “kindom” that is to come. Everything will pass away, Jesus says, except my Word. In reflecting on the Gospel of Matthew a few weeks ago, I came across a different translation of the be”attitudes” that gave me an interesting perspective about our journeying to the “kindom” each day. It reads like this:
You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are – no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourself cared for. You’re blessed when you get your inside world –you’re mind and heart – put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and you’re place in God’s family. …etc.
As we gear up for the holiday season and the reason for it – the Father’s Gift of Jesus to us, God’s Word perhaps can remind us to empty ourselves of self, so there is room for another. People who share their lives, their time and talents and treasures, are trying to live this message.

Special Need for the Week: We can use clothing and shoes for young children – ages 5-14. RCIA We continue to reflect on the Images of God, and this week we are learning about the very basis of Catholic belief – the Trinity. Yes, it is a mystery, but like all mystery we are called to delve into the WORD so that we may be nourished in our faith.
Knights of Columbus Council 1074
Annual Crafts Fair K of C Council 1074 Sponsoring Talk by Gary Krupp on Pope Pius XII On Saturday, November 21st, 2015, Knights of Co-lumbus Council #1074 will sponsor a talk on Pope Pius XII by Gary Krupp, DCS, KC*SG, OStJ, of the Pave the Way Foundation. Mr. Krupp will describe the work of the Foundation and how they discovered the disinformation campaign about the actions of the Vatican during the Second World War. This prompt-ed the organization to initiate a comprehensive search for primary source documentation in order to present the truth of the lifesaving actions of the Catholic Church under the papacy of Pope Pius XII. Pave the Way has actively sought eyewitnesses and scholarly testimo-ny since 2006 and currently has over 76,000 pages of documented material available free of charge for international study on their web-site, www.ptwf.org. The talk will be held in Saint Mary’s School Caf-eteria behind the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary, 412 Ann St, Wilming-ton; beginning at 10:30 AM.
Gary Krupp is a Doctor of Commercial Services. He was made a Knight Commander of the Pontifical Order of Saint Gregory by Pope John Paul II in 2000 and was raised to Commander with a Silver Star by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007. He was also made a member of the order of the Anglican Order St. John of Jerusalem by Queen Elizabeth II.
Pave the Way Foundation is a non-sectarian organization dedicated to achieving peace by closing the gap in tolerance, education and the practical relations between religions, through cultural, technological and intellectual exchanges. It strives to eliminate the use of religion as a tool, which, historically has been used, by some, to achieve personal agendas and to cause conflicts. From the Principal Joyce M. Price
"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16
I hope that you had as much fun as I did at our annual
Friday Fright Night. It was wonderful to be able to visit with so many families and see the creativity of the many costumes. I would like to especially thank our Home and School treasurer and chair of Friday Fright Night, Mrs. Tammy Fischer (Kayla-7th) and her co-chair, Mrs. Jill Billings (Abby-7th and Nolan-3rd). This wonderful event is spon-sored by your Home and School Association. I would also like to thank all those who sponsored booths/activities, those who hung the lights, and Mr. and Mrs. Hudson (Alice - Class of 2011) who manned the grill for the evening. Great thanks go to all the parent volunteers who made this night a great success, including Mr. Williams (Owen-2nd) who was our D.J. for the evening. We hope you enjoyed our SMS Falcon cheerleaders and violinists. One event of this night is an old tradition at our school. Thanks to the super creative 8th Grade Class and their parents who worked together to create Haunted House 2015. The lines were long, but worth the wait! Check out all the pictures on our Facebook page, like and share! Student Council - The students in grades 5-8 listened to the speeches of the candidates running for Student Council Board. The votes are in and the following are our officers for this school year: President - Kasey Kiser Vice-president - Reaghan Juelke Chaplain - Ben Hearne Secretary - Abby Billings Treasurer - Lucas Cordon Outreach Coordinator - Molly Kiser Student Council Inductions will be held following Mass on November 20th. Principal of the Day - On Friday, November 6th Miss Harper Clark (3rd) served as the Prin-cipal of the Day. Her parents purchased this day at the Gala last spring. Miss Clark had a full day of activities during her day in charge of the school. She boosted school spirit by having "Hat Day"...crazy hats, sports hats, animal hats, and more! She also gave out treats at each lunch. After Mass she announced the following October WOW award winners: Pennington Frelke, Justin Taylor, Addie Butler, Juli-ana Tremaglio, Kasey Kiser, and Kenny Brown. The winners of the drawing were Justin Taylor and Kenny Brown. Congratulations to these students for going above and beyond to help others. Veterans Day - On this day, students created cards for our veterans which were delivered to the Veterans Clinic here in Wilmington. Looking Ahead Nov. 17-20 - Scholastic Book Fair
Weather Day Make-up—Wednesday, November 25th—Noon Dismis-sal as stated on our calendar.
St. Mary Athletics Spirit Wear Deadline: We have been getting a nice reply to our online and paper orders for student and parent Spirit Wear. The orders were placed on Friday, November 13th. Hopefully, the order will be in by Thanksgiving.
Booster General Meeting: Our next Booster meeting will be held in a few weeks. We will send out a postcard reminder. We have over 90 parent and teacher members. Please try to attend and offer a helping hand with some of our upcoming events. We have lots in store. Come and share your ideas! Basketball Schedules: The basketball schedules for November and December have been posted on the school's main webpage. The Janu-ary and February schedules will be posted in December. All games are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. When we play double-headers, the girls will play first (around 4:15 pm), followed by the boys. Come out to enjoy some exciting basket-ball and watch our excellent cheering teams in action. SignUp Genius: With basketball comes the need for volunteers help make things run smoothly. I do not want to say that it is mandatory for parents of athletes to help at games, but I hope you will find the time to give at least one hour. I thank the parents who offer their help for every game, while others watch. Please volunteer so the parents of players can have a few moments to watch their child play or to cheer them on. Pep Squad: Plans are underway to set aside the center section of our bleachers for a "Student Pep Squad." We need a few parents to organ-ize this group and sit with the members during games. If you are inter-ested, please contact any of the board members. Who knows? You might even spot a Flying Falcon during time-outs and half time! Booster T-Shirts: I have placed the most recent order for our Booster t-shirts. You will be receiving them as soon as they come in. Booster Photo: I would like to organize a group photo of all Booster members wearing their Booster t-shirt. The photo would be posted so everyone can see the unity and support St. Mary parents and kids have for our program. Perhaps we can meet one day after school. Please give me feedback on this idea....Thanks!
