DRILL: SPIDER PUSH-UPS OBJECTIVE: Finding the pads of our basketball hands Description:

Key Points:

Have players place one hand, using the pads only, on the other hand

Simulate a spider doing push-ups; finding the area/pads that are used to dribble

Have players pick up their ball, concentrating on using the pads of their fingers, as they practice dribbling

Go back to spider push-ups after a few minutes of dribbling to review

Emphasize PADS ONLY when dribbling

DRILL: SPOT FINDERS OBJECTIVE: Moving with purpose Description:

Key Points:

Line up players along the baseline or half court line

Coach gives “spot” assignments and shows the spot (area of the floor) accordingly

On the whistle, players hustle to their defensive and/or offensive spots.

May try timing your teams as a contest to see which group can get to their proper positions the fastest

May run with only 3 lines first and build up to 6 players

Use wristbands to help identify “who you’re guarding”

DRILL: 2 TO 1 OBJECTIVE: Drills to eliminate the double dribble Description:

Key Points:

Set up a course using cones; vary the course

Have all players travel in the same direction

No passing a player (at first)

Dribble with one hand On the whistle, players turn

and go the opposite direction

Using one hand (outside hand) when moving Switching directions Moving on a whistle (command)

DRILL: PIVOT TAG OBJECTIVE: Learning to pivot and when to use it; ballhandling

Description:

Key Points:

Players stay on one half of the court in personal space with a ball

One (or two) player is designated as “it”

All other players are running away for the “it”

The “it” tags and freezes players from running; forces players to begin pivoting

Coach “thaws” players when satisfied with the player’s pivot

Switch the “it” every 1 to 2 minutes

On a big whistle, coach STOPS all movement to a jump stop and pivot or if all players are tagged

“It” does not have a ball; moves much faster!

DRILL: STANCE AND SLIDE OBJECTIVE: Defensive – individual body position, basketball slide Description:

Key Points:

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

This is a team slide drill. Coach teach defensive

stance and how to properly slide and show the slide course

Coach may lead the team Add quick stops and

pivoting while reversing to face in/toward the floor at all times

Stay low and push rather than stepping Do not pass teammates Arms out and palms up at all times! One hand in passing lane and one hand

DRILL: WRISTBAND MATCH UP OBJECTIVE: Moving with purpose Description:

Key Points:

Randomly assign a player a number 1, 2, or 3 (numbers are based on floor spots; 1 = point guard, 2 = right side wing, 3 = left side wing)

Mix the team all over the floor (full or half court)

Their defensive partner/player (SAME wristband) must close his/her eyes and on your whistle, must turn and quickly find his/her opponent.

May time for “team best”

Emphasize number specific SPOTS where you want your players using the lines of the floor ie. wing = free throw line extended

May use poly spots

DRILL: TRIPLE THREAT OBJECTIVE: What to do with the rock! Description:

Key Points:

Demonstrate the triple threat position to players

Triple threat: o Catch to:

Pass Shoot Attack (dribble)

Add the catch and pivot (in

triple threat) facing or squaring up to the basket

Add catch, pivot, triple threat, to “your call.” ie. “attack” - player goes to basket, “shot” - off one dribble if too far out, “pass” – pivot back and pass back to you

DRILL: CATCHING HANDS OBJECTIVE: Block and tuck to catch Description:

Key Points:

Shooting hand is the target hand and “blocks” the ball as it is passed

Other hand comes around to “tuck” with T-thumbs or what you would call “shooter’s hands”

Listen for two contacts as the ball is caught

TIE “triple threat” back into catching Remind players, this is catching a ball as you

are FACING your passer

DRILL: PARTNER PASSING OBJECTIVE: Passing the bounce and chest pass Description:

Key Points:

Create a catching line Block and tuck hands are up

and ready Ask for “BALL” Coach passes, reminding

players to block and tuck (add quick stop and pivot later)

Add a second line to be your passers once the flow of the drill has caught on

Go to the end of your line (keep it simple) or run to the end of the opposite line

Catch low 2 contacts (sounds)

DRILL: KINDERSTAR OBJECTIVE: Ballhandling routine Description:

Key Points:

This is a ball handling routine.

May be TIMED for player development

ROUTINE: o 3x – around head both

ways o 3x – waist both way o 3x – one leg both ways o 3x – other leg both ways o 3x – rolling figure 8’s

both ways o AND STOP (with a crab

dribble)

You can vary this pattern – go with a sequence YOU like!

First time you time them, RECORD IT! Compare later…

DRILL: QUICK STOP AND PIVOT OBJECTIVE: Stopping, reverse and front foot pivot Description:

Key Points:

This is a synchronized team drill

Start with 3 even player lines on the baseline

First whistle brings the first player in each line (3 players total)

A quick second whistle brings the first group of 3 to a quick stop, while the second group of 3 are at the line in the ready position

The third whistle (and the whistles to follow) quick stops the groups in motion and brings another group up to the line in the ready position

Drill continues until all players travel from one baseline to the other

Last players in line are now the first players to head to the opposite end (as drill begins again)

DRILL: HOT POTATO – BASKETBALL STYLE! OBJECTIVE: Passing to teammates while avoiding defenders Description:

Key Points:

The majority of players (ie. six) set up in any random exterior pattern; corner/box, circle

Have 3 different players (other than the six) try to intercept passes

The defenders must quickly run to the middle and touch hands to keep things fair

The defender takes the place of whoever made the pass he/she intercepted

Pivot to change directions and pass Encourage skip passes, as well as short passes Add the rule – can’t pass to your immediate

right and/or left

DRILL: MONKEY IN THE MIDDLE OBJECTIVE: Jabbing and pivoting Description:

Key Points:

3 player drill; sideline to sideline

Player rolls ball over to opposite sideline where another player is set up to receive

The player that rolled the ball, chases and “closes out” or defends the receiver

Receiver picks up the ball and begins pivoting, faking, and jabbing

Pass and chase the other direction

The defender stays to keep the drill balanced The receiver then becomes the chaser towards

the other sideline

DRILL: B.F.F. BACKBOARD OBJECTIVE: Finding the “high and soft” sweet spot Description:

Key Points:

Players evenly line on block – facing the backboard

One basketball is shot back and forth using the backboard

Team goals and team record TIME (ie. consecutive in 2

minutes) to challenge

High and soft = high on the backboard, soft on the backboard

After player shoots, send them underneath the basket and around to the back of the opposite line

Key Points:

This is a partner drill With a line or spot

BETWEEN the partners, the challenge is to HIT THE SPOT

This is actually a tough drill!

How many total (both partners) hits in 2 minutes?

Great drill to come back to after a water break Emphasis on good shooting form WATCH FOR BACKSPIN

DRILL: THE CROSSOVER OBJECTIVE: Pushing the ball vs. a defender and changing directions Description:

Key Points:

Drill is run from sideline to sideline (or baseline, if there aren’t too many players) in a ZIG-ZAG PATTERN

Emphasize EYES UP (on coach’s signal) showing fingers and asking players to yell out the number of fingers showing

KEY to the CROSSOVER = The receiving hand must be lower than the giving hand!

A change in direction = A change in speed Accelerate after the actual crossover

25

DRILL: THE “V” CUT OBJECTIVE: Getting open on the wing Description:

Key Points:

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

The V-cut is a very basic part of the game

It is more than just working to get open! (Trying to beat the defender)

Players take turns: o Walking their man

down o Setting up their

defender o “CROSSING THEIR

DEFENDER’S FACE” o Getting their defender

“in their back pocket”

Catch (Receive) at the TRUE WING = Free throw line EXTENDED/3-point line

Change in direction = Change in speed

Page 27: Basketball 12 Week Curriculum Drills

26

DRILL: ZONEYBALL OBJECTIVE: Lead-up game Description:

Key Points:

A full court/scrimmage-like lead-up game

4 vs. 4 or more is IDEAL! Players play “normal”

basketball (like a scrimmage) with coach insisting on a certain number of passes (ie. 3 passes)

Use 3 passes to transition and then the team may pass to a zoney (a zoney is 1 or 2 players in a zone defined by cones/lines)

The second a zoney touches the ball = 5 second countdown from coach

Zoneys either score or not within the allotted time, then MUST pass out to the OPPOSITE team to have their turn transitioning

Encourage BACKBOARD shooting!! Great game!

28

DRILL: PASSING TAG OBJECTIVE: Passing, pivoting - teams/tag fun Description:

Key Points:

Divide team into 2 teams You can play either half or

full court (depends on how many total players)

One team is making strong (longer) passes to his/her teammates TRYING to get the ball to a teammate that is close enough to the opposing team to touch

Once the ball is caught, the player must STOP, PIVOT, and REACH to tag

A turnover = dropped pass = ball to the other team

IDEAL to invite another team to play (8 vs. 8) A tagged player may do push-ups to return (or

something similar) instead of completely being eliminated from the game (grade 5 and up can be eliminated)

DRILL: DRIBBLE TAG (WITH A PIRANHA) OBJECTIVE: Stop/start dribbling, changing direction and speed Description:

Key Points:

Players play regular dribble tag until coach yells out PIRANHA

One player who does NOT have a ball “attacks” fleeing players

While piranha is on the floor, players DO NOT play regular dribble tag; they focus on escaping the piranha

SWITCH piranhas every 1-2 minutes

DRILL: M/M PRINCIPLE: JUMP TO THE BALL OBJECTIVE: Team defense Description:

Key Points:

TEAM defensive principle “Jump to the Ball” is the principle that has the entire team “jumping” to the ball somewhat simultaneously

The pass determines the jump

This is the help-side shifting over

Hands up “BEAT THE BALL” = challenge your team to race

the ball to their JUMP position

DRILL: COACH’S REBOUNDING DRILL OBJECTIVE: Blocking out (basics) Description:

Key Points:

Coach starts with the ball under the basket

Defenders (2 at a time) LISTEN for coach’s hard dribble to the floor (crab dribble)

Defenders block out (2 - 5 seconds)

Coach rotates next player in

Concentrate on getting wide Encourage clean, physical play!

DRILL: M/M PRINCIPLE: 1 PASS AWAY = DENY OBJECTIVE: Team defense Description:

Key Points:

Applying the “Jump to the Ball” principle, players NOW must grasp the concept of “deny”

DENY IS defending your man-and-a-half! STOP THE DRIVE!

Here, defender must play “deny” basketball when the offensive player is in the corner (C)

TALK: “I got DENY!” Bottom to the ball Thumbs down Knees bent, active feet

DRILL: S-C-S (SIDE-CENTER-SIDE) OBJECTIVE: Full court or half court ball movement Description:

Key Points:

Players line up in 3 even lines on the baseline

Players in the middle line need a ball

As players advance down the court, they “fill the lanes” and o ask for ball o show target hand

Outside lanes (players) should stay in front or ahead of the middle lane (point guards)

First players in line become your last 3 players to return

DRILL: THE GIVE AND GO OBJECTIVE: Basket cut, lay-up, half court passing Description:

Key Points:

The fundamental give and go starts with a good pass

The passer then CUTS to the basket - remember to step toward the pass (receiver) FIRST

This establishes a good angle on the backboard and…

Puts the defense (passer’s defender) in his/her “back pocket”

Players should step toward their receiver BEFORE cutting to the basket

Good spacing is critical to creating good angles

DRILL: M/M PRINCIPLE: 2 AND 3 PASSES AWAY OBJECTIVE: Help-side and recover Description:

Key Points:

Players are in 5 vs. 5 shell Pass ball from O1 to O2 to

O4/post X5 slides over to “help” AS.. X3 drops below and defends O5

X1 drops to off-side elbow area to defend O3 (and O1)

DRILL: ZIG-ZAG DRILL OBJECTIVE: Individual defense vs. crossover Description:

Key Points:

Bobby Knights’ classic zig-zag drill

Starts with player on the baseline (or sideline); partner up for offensive player vs. zig-zagging defender

The defender is in a good “stance”, using PUSH feet (not traditional sliding)

See the ball handler’s ball-side ear! Hop-Hop = Softening the defense

Key Points:

This lead-up game starts with 2 teams.

Have half of both teams equally spread out along the sidelines

Alternate offense and defense

Ball must be passed IN – OUT – IN – OUT to advance, create, and/or attack

Younger players = 3 or 4 passes prior to shooting Older players/teams could be allowed to move

DRILL: UP-AND-ON THE LINE OBJECTIVE: Defensive (passing lane) positioning Description:

Key Points:

When a player jumps to “deny,” he/she is UP THE LINE or DOWN THE LINE and to play tough defense, one should be ON THE LINE

“THE LINE” is the imaginary line between two offensive players that a defender “positions” on to be most aggressive and effective

PRESSUE THE PASSING LANE! UP THE LINE = TOWARD THE BALL DOWN THE LINE = TOWARD THE (YOUR)

DRILL: WAR OBJECTIVE: Shell work; pass, catch, defense, offense, rebounding Description:

Key Points:

War is a great, continuous shell drill

3 lines on the baseline, one ball in the middle

The first 3 players in each line, run out past a designated line

The next 3 players chase them out (they are on defense)

They play 3 on 3 A defensive rebound, made shot, or steal results in a

“WAR” WAR = Defense (or team who just scored); all 3 run

DRILL: KNOCK OUT OBJECTIVE: Pressure shooting Description:

Key Points:

One line, two basketballs The objective of the game is

to “knock out” the player in front of you

The 1st player shoots from the designated spot and follows up with a lay-up or short-shot BEFORE the next player makes his/her shot

If the first shot is a made basket, then that player hustles down the ball and passes it back to the next player in line.

Go to the end of the line if successful Last player standing – WINS!

DRILL: FREE THROW SHOOTING OBJECTIVE: Simplifying the shot Description:

Key Points:

A gentleman, by the name of Mr. Stan Kellner, is the true mind behind this mental approach to successful free throw shooting. More can be found in his book “Set No Limits.”

Free throw shooter sets up; balanced T-thumbs, and eyes down.

Shooter “sights” the rim and says SIGHT

“FEEL” is the next word, a kinesthetic word, for the movement.

This shot shows your awesome gooseneck!

“YES” is the anchor word or “CLEAR” to clear the mind and reset for the next shot

Shoot free throws in sets of 2 or 3 RESET FEET after a miss only!

DRILL: PASSING GAME OBJECTIVE: Passing, cutting, and “fill” Description:

Key Points:

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

This wheel-motion teaches players to pass and cut (and fill)

Player 01 passes to wing 02 and cuts AWAY to the next spot or position. This bumps everyone up a position

You may pop a post out to the corner for wing cutters

Always fill higher/wider than the last player o Maintain good spacing

DRILL: FADES AND CURLS OBJECTIVE: Coming off screens Description:

Key Points:

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

CURL = To curl off a screen is a “read” that typically results from a defender following or chasing the cutter

FADE = To fade is to fall back and, many times, replace the screen setter. Fading sets up for an outside shot/or outside attack. Fades are a “read” determined by a hedging defender (cheating under)

Drop inside shoulder and brush the screen as you curl

Always show target hands DRIBBLE to improve your angle with FADES

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

This is a full court drill With 3 even lines on the

baseline, the first player in each line steps out and plays against two set defenders

The defense should set up in a tandem formation, where the top defender commits to contesting/stopping the ball

3 vs. 2 until a shot (defensive rebound)

Whoever took the shot becomes the new defender against the original defensive players

The SHOOTER must get back on DEFENSE The two ORIGINAL DEFENDERS turn into the

Key Points:

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

Teaches players to quickly “chase” their player down to apply full court pressure

Directly following a made basket (our team) players run out to their offensive player

Team may face guard OR stay behind and allow the entry (then trap!)

“Run and jump” incorporates half court man to man principles including help side (zone up the furthest and deny = pressure the pass)

MAJOR CONCEPT = 2 closest defenders – TRAP! Furthest defender back never lets anyone

DRILL: M/M PRINCIPLE: DROP TO THE LEVEL OF THE BALL OBJECTIVE: Team Defense Description:

Key Points:

C KEY:

= Coach = Dribble = Pass = Ball = Cut = Screen

Using an imaginary line (runs sideline to sideline)

ALL players DROP to that level

This is help-side defense! Note how this might pull X1

out of deny, but he/she can close out to defend – it defends the drive

Teaches young players to focus on the ball and strong help-side

This is a good principle to emphasize with a weaker outside shooting team
