Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. The very first hoops Naismith used were peach baskets with no bottoms. The 10 foot height that is still considered regulation was just happenstance. The very first basketball was actually a soccer ball. It wasn't until 1929 that the basketball used today was introduced.

BASKETBALL COURT• Straight, painted lines mark the court's

boundaries. If you step out of bounds with the ball in your hands, you turn the ball over to the other team. A 50-foot-long, 4-inch-wide centreline divides the court in half, and there is a 12-foot-diameter circle in the middle. Teams stand on either side of the line in the circle for a jump ball. A line 15 feet from the backboard marks the free-throw line.

• There can only be 5 players on the court at a time and minimum of 10 players in the team in the NBA. Each player is a assigned a position on the court, they must defend this position. Teams work together in order to win the game

BASKETBALL SHOES• The Converse All Star shoe was introduced in

1917 as the first shoe designed specifically for basketball.

According to Kicks Guide, Converse has sold more than 550 million pairs of these canvas upper, rubber-soled shoes, dominating the basketball shoe market until leather shoes were introduced in the mid-1960s by Adidas.

RULES• Personal fouls include any type of illegal physical

contact.• Hitting • Pushing • Slapping • Holding • Two free throws are awarded if the player is fouled

while shooting a goal and they miss their shot. If a player is fouled while shooting a shot and makes it anyway, he or she is awarded one free throw. Thus, he could score points on the play.

MICHAEL JORDAN• American basketball

star Michael Jordan was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York. Jordan left college after his junior year to join the NBA. Drafted by the Chicago Bulls, he helped the team make it to the playoffs. For his efforts there, Jordan received the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

The NBA was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. It adopted the name National Basketball Association in the fall of 1949 after adding several teams from the rival National Basketball League.

as one of the premier basketball leagues in the world, and after a humble beginning, is today home to some of the world's best players. HISTORY OF OLYMPIC BASKETBALL

• Basketball made its appearance at the Olympic Games in 1904 in St Louis as a demonstration sport, as the competition was held between only American teams and counted as an event of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU of the USA) Championships. At the Games in 1936 in Berlin, basketball joined the Olympic programme, where it has remained to this day. Women’s basketball debuted at the 1976 Games in Montreal.

• Tamworth sports dome home of Tamworth basketball was officially opened on 17th may 2011 by the Prime Minister Julia Gillard. It is a state of the art six court stadium with 4 international standard timber courts with a show court seating 600 and 2 synthetic courts.
