Bass Coast’s conservation reserves provide a haven for plants and wildlife. The heathlands that occur along the coast are ideal for bird watching. A variety of shorebirds can be seen along our coastline and between August and March, Hooded Plovers nest on the beaches above the high tide mark. Please take care and watch for eggs when walking along the beach. Through winter, the many lookouts along the coast provide a vantage point to view southern Right Whales on their annual migration to the warmer waters along the southern coastline of Australia.

The rugged sandstone cliffs, broad rock platforms and underwater reefs of the Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park represent some of Victoria’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Stretching along the coast from Harmers Haven to Inverloch, the park provides for boating, swimming and snorkelling or a quiet walk along a secluded sandy beach. Fishing is prohibited throughout much of this stretch but the opportunities for snorkelling and diving are excellent.

The Park’s reefs are home to a multitude of plants and animals that flourish in a rich underwater garden of seaweeds. Found amongst the seaweeds are an abundance of brightly coloured sea-stars, feature stars, crabs, large marine snails and various fish. For those who wish to remain on dry land, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the area with cliff top sightseeing and beach activities.

The Bunurong Coast hides a dinosaur bone-yard rich in history. Discovered in 1903, the first bones found have been dated to 115 million years. To date, more than 6,000 bones have been uncovered including teeth of small dinosaurs and many mammals, birds, turtles and fish. Each summer for over ten years, a team of Monash University palaeontologists and volunteers return to the site to continue their discovery work.

You’ll find galleries and studios, music, theatre and dance, photography and film writing, art exhibitions and music festivals and community cultural centres.

Unwind, forget about your busy life at home and experience the rich historical significance of Bass Coast. It is home to some of the first sites of white settlement in Victoria. Take a step back in time at the State Coal Mine Reserve in Wonthaggi. At its peak the Mine was a bustling network of underground tunnels filled with men, pit ponies, dust and dim lights. Operating from 1909 to 1968, some 17 million tonnes of coal was extracted from the Wonthaggi mines. Today, visitors can inspect the original East Area workings by taking an underground guided tour or a self-guided tour of the relics scattered throughout the Reserve.

CYCLE,WALKORRIDE

Explore Bass Coast on foot with an easy stroll or a challenging coastal trail – there are walks and bicycle rides to suit every fitness level.

gEORgE BAss COAsTAL WALk

This walk follows the route of explorer George Bass’ epic voyage of discovery along the southern edge of the Anderson Peninsula over 200 years ago. It offers panoramic ocean views from a narrow winding path along cliffs that rise high above the pounding surf of Bass Strait. The low vegetation provides excellent opportunities for observing bird life along the coast and in winter, the high cliffs provide a vantage point to view Southern Right Whales on their annual migration to the warmer waters along the southern coastline of Australia.

The walk is approximately seven kilometres long and takes an average of two hours to walk one way. It starts from the southern end of Punchbowl Road, off the Phillip Island Tourist Road or alternatively off the Bass Highway at Kilcunda.

BAss COAsT RAiL TRAiL

The Bass Coast Rail Trail is Victoria’s only coastal rail trail with a landscape that varies from the rugged coastline at Kilcunda, to flat farmland and bush near Wonthaggi. Winding 16km between Wonthaggi and Anderson, it showcases the region’s rich coal mining history against stunning ocean views. Paths wind along rugged cliff tops overlooking magnificent views of Phillip Island and the ocean, with many short detours that lead to small deserted beaches accessible only by foot or boat.

This trail is best known for the trestle bridge at Kilcunda that offers panoramic views of Bass Strait and a wild and wonderful surf beach as its backdrop.

The Rail Trail starts at the Wonthaggi Visitor Information Centre in Murray Street or at the old Anderson Railway Station site on Bass Highway at the roundabout to Phillip Island. It links to the George Bass Coastal Walk at Kilcunda, so if you

choose, it is possible to walk from the Punch Bowl in San Remo all the way to the centre of Wonthaggi.

THE gURdiEs

The Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve represents some of the largest remaining areas of native vegetation on the eastern shore of Western Port. The Reserve covers an area of about 260 hectares and provides good bushwalking and sightseeing opportunities for visitors as well as the chance to see a variety of rare wild orchids. There is a gentle seven minute stroll from the Bass Highway car park as well as numerous other walking tracks of varying distances throughout the Reserve.

WONTHAggi HEATHLANds NATURE CONsERvATiON REsERvE

Walking tracks lead through this reserve linking the rugged ocean beach to the extensive coastal heathlands and scrubs. During spring, the heathlands host a spectacular display of wildflowers.

Home to over 80 species of birds the Reserve is a bird watcher’s paradise. The Reserve contains three separate walks linking the rugged ocean beach with the heathlands.

sCREW CREEk NATURE TRAiL

This easy return walk winds its way through established dune systems and coastal vegetation from the car park at the end of the Inverloch Foreshore Reserve camping area through stands of coastal tea-tree and mangroves and climbs to a lookout on Townsend Bluff. After following the undulating scenic track over board-walk and salt-marsh up to the Bluff you will be rewarded with beautiful views over Anderson Inlet.

As you travel further south you’ll find the picturesque hamlet of Corinella. With an all tide ramp for launching fishing boats, a great BBQ rotunda and a lovely sandy swimming beach, Corinella is also the pickup point for the barge to French island. A historical marker is dedicated to the sight of victoria’s first government House – a testament to the historic importance of this area.

Take a walk along the peninsula cliff tops or meander amongst coastal banksia and she-oaks in a serene seaside bush track setting as you enjoy the picturesque views of the islands and the sea. Nearby Coronet Bay has a swimming beach ideal for fossicking, walking, fishing and generally relaxing away from the crowds.

Bass is a small, pretty town nestled on the Bass River, not far from the turn off to Phillip Island. It was the third permanent settlement in Victoria and now services the needs of the local farming community and passing tourists. A memorial in the George Bass Park commemorates the visit by explorer George Bass and his party of six, who landed near Bass on January 4, 1789, in search of fresh water after their voyage in an open whale boat that they rowed from Sydney.

Near Bass is Woolamai Racecourse, a great place for a family outing to a classic country race meeting. Picnic races here are a popular local get together, with fashions on the field and a showcase of regional food and wine. Shuttle buses operate from Inverloch and Wonthaggi from November through to March.

The gurdies is your first stop in Bass Coast as you travel the Bass Highway into the region. Wineries are increasing in number throughout this area of the hinterland and you can expect warm welcomes at their cellar doors. Enjoy landscaped gardens and gorgeous views over the bay as you taste the superb cool-climate wines. The Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve offers a variety of walks through native bushland. It has some of the largest remaining areas of native vegetation on the eastern shore of Western Port. Over 54 species of native orchids provide a great drawcard for people from all over the world who are interested in native plant species. Enjoy a variety of walks through bushland as you discover them.

You’ll find grantville on the shores of Western Port with a post office, take away food and coffee shops, a restaurant and a bakery that offer a range of treats. There is a park with children’s play equipment and a couple of great BBQ spots to choose from. There is also a jetty perfect for casting a line from and a ramp from which to launch small craft at high tide. Enjoy the view out to French Island, especially at sunset.

The Western Port shoreline was originally thick with mangroves before many were cleared and

harvested and can be seen from the bottom of Kallay Drive at Pioneer Bay and from the Grantville Jetty. Mangroves minimise shoreline erosion and are the breeding ground for fish favoured by penguins, so there is an intensive program underway to replant the mangroves involving volunteers and local school children.

Maru Koala and Animal Park offers a wide range of activities for the whole family including hand feeding and patting koalas and kangaroos and playing mini-golf. Take the Grantville-Glen Alvie Road as an alternative route to Wonthaggi for a spectacular scenic tour of rolling hills and rural charm. The lookout at the ‘Shunt Off ’ is an ideal spot for a picnic and offers panoramic views across Western Port.

More than just the gateway to Phillip island, the small seaside village of san Remo is an attraction in its own right. Home to Australia’s largest shark fishing fleet, you can watch the fishermen unloading their catch and then taste it yourself with fish and chips from the san Remo Fisherman’s Cooperative. if you prefer to catch your own fish, charters operate regularly from the jetty.

Before heading off, make sure you visit the foreshore at feeding time to watch the pelicans gobble their share. An eclectic array of gift shops provides ample shopping opportunities in San Remo, whilst a large number of dining establishments ensure you will never go hungry.

If the weather is good, you may like to consider driving down Back Beach Road (first entry point into town) and take a relaxing cliff top walk to a viewing platform over Foots Beach. The walk takes approximately 30-40 minutes return and offers stunning water views. If you fancy a longer walk, the George Bass Coastal Walk is a must. Spanning seven kilometres between San Remo and Kilcunda, it takes approximately two hours (one way) to complete. The walk starts at Punchbowl Road approximately three minutes out of San Remo.

SANREMO

These three little towns hold hidden gems amongst the picturesque scenery of Bass Coast. kilcunda sets the coastal drive scene in spectacular fashion with its broad beach and rolling hills all visible from the killy Pub’s big balcony. down at beach level, check out kilcunda’s famous old railway bridge. Built in 1910 and almost on the sand, its sturdy trestle construction is testament to the steadfast abilities of local pioneers. While you’re there, cast a line or two into the waves for some great fishing or paddle out on a surfboard. kilcunda is the start (or finish) of two great walks – the George Bass Coastal Walk heading across the cliff tops towards San Remo and the Bass Coast Rail Trail taking you back towards Wonthaggi. En route to Wonthaggi, you will pass the mouth of the Powlett River. Follow the signposts off the highway to a lush picturesque area and rich waterbird habitat with diverse flora and fauna. Fishing and canoeing are definitely favoured past times here.

The compact nature of the hinterland appeals to many. Wandering, winding roads encourage discovery and exploration without the urgency of actually getting lost. Not far off the main road you’ll find Archies Creek, a tiny township that has

recently come alive with the establishment of a new restaurant and convention facility. The historic Royal Mail Hotel is filled with interesting memorabilia, and a really great little front bar adding charm to the experience.

If you continue to head inland you’ll find kongwak, on the Wonthaggi to Korumburra Road. This area is largely used for agriculture, including dairying but also hides some real artistic gems including a gallery displaying an array of contemporary artworks. The township holds a fantastic country market every Sunday with collectables, retro, vintage and second hand items, plants and books.

Two kilometres west of Wonthaggi towards Kilcunda you’ll find Williamsons Beach – a wide open surf beach great for long walks while listening to and watching the thunderous almighty power of Bass Strait waves crashing on the fragile dune system. This is also the site of some of Victoria’s sustainable energy development with a large wind farm and the State’s first desalination plant.

Heading south-east, a short five-minute drive through lush open farm country will take you to the golden beaches of Cape Paterson on the Bunurong Coast. Tucked away amongst the sand dunes you’ll find protected beaches, fabulous rock pools, great surf and scuba diving.

The place comes alive in summer, with a constant trickle of kids carrying buckets, balls and boards to the beaches. The main beach boasts a massive seawater swimming pool created by the early miners within the natural rocks along the shoreline. Because the pool is within the inter-tidal zone, it flushes with new marine life every day, making it a perfect place to introduce children to the wonders of the ocean in complete safety. Two life saving clubs operate on weekends during the summer months at either end of the town.

A stone’s throw from the coast, Wonthaggi is ideally located to act as a base and launching pad for your Bass Coast holiday. The town is best known for its historic state Coal Mine that operated from 1910 to 1968. Now a great visitor attraction, the Mine offers a fascinating insight into the difficult working conditions of Wonthaggi coal miners, with guided underground tours, audio-visual displays, a museum and heritage buildings.

The coal is long gone today, but Wonthaggi has reinvented itself as the undisputed commercial and retail hub of South Gippsland. The town brims with a range of shops, eateries, supermarkets, entertainment facilities and accommodation.

Each day at midday you’ll hear a whistle sound in the town, located in the old poppet head in Apex Park on Murray Street. The whistle was once located at the powerhouse and its shrill blast signalled shift changes across the entire coalfield. Made by the Danks company, its ‘sister whistle’ was used in the Titanic and now lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean!

If you prefer to take in the sights on foot there is a diverse range of established walks around the island including Cape Woolamai and the Nobbies along the rugged south coast, Conservation Hill

and Rhyll Mangrove Boardwalk overlooking Rhyll Wetlands and Swan Lake Nature Trail leading to the only permanent freshwater lake on the island. Explore the seaside villages as you enjoy the cosy cafés and up-market restaurants and explore the many quaint retail outlets and galleries.

Churchill Island, accessed by bridge from Phillip Island, is steeped in history. It’s just as beautiful as the cape but in a thoroughly tranquil way, with lush lawns and lavender rows sloping away from the historical homestead towards the glassy waters of Western Port. The island is a working farm with Highland cattle, sheep, ducks, chickens and Clydesdale horses. Enjoy a meal in the licensed café with spectacular bay views and take home goodies from the Farm Shop or the monthly Farmers’ Market. Ranger talks, machinery demonstrations and festivals bring the island to life throughout the year.

French Island National Park is something of a secret paradise. Accessible only by a 30 minute passenger ferry from Cowes or barge from Corinella, the island has about 70 permanent residents, many of them descendants of the first settlers. A haven of peace and serenity, French Island hosts a National Park that covers about

two-thirds of the island. The park contains environments ranging from mangrove salt marsh to open woodlands, and is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Explore the park by bus, bike or on foot. See chicory kilns, spot some of the large population of koalas or long-nosed potoroos or simply enjoy the serenity.

striking and beautiful, Wilsons Promontory National Park is known for its untouched beauty, bushwalking, camping and abundant wildlife. Huge granite mountains form a dramatic backdrop to rainforest and fern gullies, sweeping beaches and coastline. A Park for all seasons, the Prom is a much-loved icon for many victorians who have holidayed there regularly since childhood. it provides beauty, relaxation and adventure.

Watch waves crash onto the beach at Whisky Bay and listen to the sand ‘squeak’ as you shuffle your feet along the shoreline at Squeaky Beach. At Tidal River let the kids paddle in the shallow waters and watch the surfers try their skills at Norman Bay. Choose a walking track to suit your ability – they are many and varied in distance and difficulty.

Tidal River, 30 kilometres from the Park entrance, has a Visitor Information Centre, a general store and a range of accommodation from lodges and cabins to campsites. Beyond Tidal River, there are outstation campsites for hikers at scenic spots.

And let’s not forget the country around the Prom

– rolling green hills, rich farmlands with spectacular views and beautiful native Australian bushland. For the child in all of us, there is a ride on a historic train with the South Gippsland Tourist Railway at Korumburra. The steep and windy track skirts its way along the hills of the beautiful Strzelecki Ranges, with spectacular views across Gippsland and towards Phillip Island and Bass Coast. Korumburra is also home to Coal Creek Heritage Village, a place to travel back in time and relive the lives of coal miners long ago. The Village has become a gathering place for events with everything from Halloween to a Teddy Bear’s Picnic to a Busker’s Festival.

Koonwarra is the home of Gippsland’s organic and sustainable food culture. Nestled in the heart of some of the most abundant farming land in Victoria, and surrounded by world-renowned coastal and mountain regions, Koonwarra showcases sustainable living from organic food and wine to art, furniture and clothing, through to accommodation, health and wellbeing. Enjoy its beautiful surroundings and experience its abundance and vision. The village hosts a monthly Farmers’ Market not to be missed. Not far away you’ll find Meeniyan where you’ll be delighted by the great food at Moo’s and be sure to find some treasures as you browse the main street.
