Well, we had aneye-opener of achat with one ofBritish pop’s mostdistinctive andexpressive singers. The seeminglybubbly extrovertLulu actually hasa secret hiddenbeneath her

sparkling public image, a secret whichshe shared with us ahead of her tourdate to Komedia Bath next month. Onpage 14 she reveals a much darker sideto her life; she tells us about her violentchildhood, why she fears being dislikedand how she copes with having PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. She alsoreminisces about her past visits to Bathwith her son and tells us why she’s soexcited to return (“Bath is a place thatseems sunny even when the weather’sbad”).On page 20, we speak with fourheavyweight comics – Gary Delaney,Pete Firman, Jarred Christmas and SeanHughes – who are part of the biggestUK comedy tour of the year. Before theyhave us in stitches at Frome’s Memorial

Theatre, they tell us what it takes to befunny, who would be in their dreamcomedy club line-up, and their worst gigsof all time (spoiler alert – it involves a15-person cowboy-style brawl).Sticking to our theme of on-stage stars,

husband and wife duo Robert Daws andAmy Robbins who are best known forplaying a married couple in ITV’s TheRoyal and are on their way to Bath to staras yet another loved-up pair in RehearsalFor Murder at the Theatre Royal Bath.Moving on from the fantastic people whoare touring to our city, we look to someof the city’s own awesome individualswho are making names for themselves.

on page 44 including a foodie fanatic, aHuff Post nature enthusiast and a fashiondevotee. We also have some fantastic Bath inFashion highlights (p.28), a travel reviewto Singapore (p.40) and Easter recipesand wines to indulge in (36 & 39).Enjoy!

Iam in the middle of being personally serenadedby one of British pop’s most distinctive andexpressive voices. With her characteristicsoulful crackle and power, Lulu triumphantly

blasts Beyoncé’s Runnin’ at me while I giggle andshift awkwardly in my seat not knowing whether toattempt to (badly) harmonise with her or interruptto ask another question (knowing we’ve only got 20minutes of allocated interview time left before heragent wraps things up).“Sorry, I got carried away there,” laughs thelegendary Scottish singer songwriter. “Beyoncé’sone of my favourites. I also love One Direction,Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and that one thatwas singing in the car with James Cordon – Adele!“I’m not into all that old music, I’m young at heart.I’m also not embarrassed to say I’m a Belieber too– I’m obsessed with Justin Bieber and I don’t carewho knows it.”There is a reason to her lyrical outburst; she singsto me as a way of detailing, in verse, one of hercoping methods for her severe anxiety which shehas suffered with for years.“Whenever I’m having a bout I just do as Beyoncédoes,” says Lulu, who was born Marie McDonaldMcLaughlin Lawrie. “The song’s about not running

things. She sings: ‘If I lose myself, I lose it all’,‘I’ve outrun the fears that chased’ and ‘every voicethat cries inside my head, forever drives’. I reallyrelate to the words because I feel as if I don’t wantto run from the fear, but face it instead, because, well you have to, don’t you.“I’ve still got that dark Celtic angst,” she adds.“But I don’t want to write songs crying about howtough things are. My songs are really about goingbeyond the problems. They’re about living in thesolution.”Lulu’s been on the pop scene for over 50 years;she won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 withthe song Boom Bang-a-Bang, she’s shared thestage with David Bowie and Take That, hosted a

would suggest. She has been diagnosed with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which shebelieves stems from childhood, and she says it’s aconstant battle for her.“I know it sounds silly because that’s what soldiershave,” says the Grammy-nominated singer.“But I’ve been afraid my whole life. Afraid ofeverything. Afraid to reveal myself. Afraid that ifyou knew me, if you really knew me, you wouldn’tlike me. That to me is a frightening thought – notbeing liked. That’s probably why I’ve always puton a bit of a front.“Struggle is a word that comes up a lot in mymusic,” she adds. “I’ve been one of the luckiestpeople but I’ve been thrown from pillar to post, emotionally. I’ve dealt with demons, sadness...anxiety, anxiety, anxiety.“I don’t want people to really see me, I don’t wantyou to see my pain, I don’t want to have to tell youabout the angst and craziness going on in my head. And I was trained to do that, as a very young girl.

Born into a working-class family in Lennoxtown,Scotland, she says that music has always been apart of her life, a part that helped her through toughtimes, and she’d always dreamed about becominga singer.“My parents were crazy about music,” she says.“They bought records every Friday, when they gottheir wages. Whatever was the hit of the minutewas on the radiogram. And that’s what formed mylife, really. I’m still very much a fan of the chartsand I love up-to-date modern music – I get lost init. My parents gave me the gift of music, and musicis a great healer.”

band and at age 15, she was already a nationalstar, belting out Shout which reached the top tenin 1964. Apart from the memory of hanging outwith The Beatles backstage at the HammersmithApollo, which she says is “clear as day”, she claimsrecollections of the time are hazy.“My life was a whirlwind,” says Lulu in an accentwhich sounds soft Glaswegian by way of London

and Los Angeles. “Most of the time I was livingin ‘Lulu land’ and it was so exciting because I wasmaking music. But decades went on and peoplewere obsessed with the Sixties, and would ask meabout it. I’d say, ‘Ach, been there, done it, got thet-shirt,’ but actually I’d only been in London andthere were a lot of things going on outside that.”Although the former redhead says she loved thekinky boots and short skirts of the Sixties, andtoday is looking glamorous with attentively coiffedblonde hair and trendy jewellery, the singer alsoremembers being plagued with insecurity about herlooks.“I had acne,” she reveals. “I was consumed by thefact I had spots. It was really tortuous, thank God Ihad music or I probably would have killed myself. It was terrible. There’d be big pictures of me, andwhen I saw To Sir With Love I went out cryingthinking, ‘I’m so ugly’. I was always hanging outwith rock stars and their model girlfriends, whowere all blonde and leggy. That part was not fun.”Lulu has a good idea of where the skin problemscame from, blaming the lack of healthy foodavailable to her while on the road at the time.“What I would eat was quite disgusting,” she

we would eat curries on the run, at any time, justbefore we’d go on stage or just after. We’d eat Marsbars, chocolate, then on the way back into town itwould be bacon and eggs in the middle of the night, and crisps and Cokes.“The truth of the matter was I had to put up witha lot,” she whispers with mock angst. “They werealways farting and they’d light their farts. It wasdisgusting, and they’d be screaming with laughter.”

hesitates and her voice sinks to a lower tone as shesays: “It wasn’t all fun and games. At the age of15 I was the breadwinner of the household, that’sa lot of pressure for a young person to have on hershoulders. My early life had a lot of love and a lotof joy, but a lot of turbulence. I was a kid who grewup very quickly as far as being responsible wasconcerned. I think that’s when the darkness truly hitme. It had been coming for a long time.

“I loved my mum and dad but I came from aviolent family,” she adds. “My mum and my dadhammered each other nightly. And I was the eldest, you know. I never slept properly. I was afraid thatmy parents would accidentally kill each other and

So that fear has ruled my whole life. It’s all aboutbeing trained not to tell anybody. My mother wouldhave a black eye. ‘Oh yeah, walked into the door.’Everybody heard the screams. It sticks to you.“It determines how you react, how you act, howyou think. And it’s always there. I have an anxiouspersonality. I can still cry when I think about theloss of my parents. There was a lot of love, a lotof laughter, as well as all the other stuff. No parentgets everything right, do they? But I’ll alwaysbelieve they did their best.“All that aggression made me feel as if I was livingin a war zone so, I know this sounds far-fetched, Ifeel as if I can relate, even if only in a small way, tosoldiers and the families of soldiers.”It’s due to this feeling of familiarity that Lulu hasteamed-up with The Military Wives Choirs forher new single, Cry, from which all the proceedswill be donated to The Military Wives ChoirFoundation. To support the single’s release, Lulu will performCry with a different Military Wives Choir at eachof her 35 UK tour dates, including her stop-off inBath.“I’m just really excited about it,” she says. “It’llmean that every show I do is unique to that city.In Bath I will be on stage with Bath’s MilitaryWives Choir, which is great. The Military WivesChoirs Foundation is a charity that brings womenin the military community closer together throughsinging, and this tour will give them an extraplatform to express themselves and raise money.“Having a different Military Wives Choir join me

onstage every night will be a lot of fun,” she adds.“But on a more serious note, as I’ve been diagnosedas having PTSD, that has helped me to relate evenmore with our men and women in the armed forces.I realised I would like to do something to help, sowe recorded Cry and my brother and I rewrote the

“PTSD is not just about physical scars; it’s aboutthe emotional scars, and they run very deep. They

need everybody’s support.”She’ll be visiting Bath’s Komedia on April 20 andsays her memories of the city have made her eagerto return.“I’m very excited about coming to Bath, and doingthe whole tour in general,” she says. “Bath is sucha beautiful place; I’ve been many times in thepast. How could I possibly pass up an opportunityto visit it, explore it and perform for its amazingpeople? I’ve visited for personal reasons in thepast – I went there for Christmas one year whenmy son [Jordan Frieda, from her second marriageto hairdresser John Frieda] was young. We have

an unbelievable relationship; I put it down to hiswisdom. I was an anxious parent, and like a lot ofworking mothers, there was a lot of guilt. But he’svery forgiving, very understanding.“The Royal Crescent was the place that stoodout most for me when we visited,” she adds.“The whole city just makes you want to get up inthe morning and go out and explore and see thearchitecture. Bath is a place that seems sunny evenwhen the weather’s bad.”When she comes to the city, she’ll be performinghits from her 50 year career, such as To Sir WithLove, The Man Who Sold The World, Relight MyFire, and, of course, Shout. As well as performingsongs from some of her musical heroes, suchas soul legends, Ray Charles and Otis Redding, she will also be taking us on a musical journeyrecalling personal anecdotes, song-writingexperiences, and other entertaining stories.“2015 was an exceptional year for me,” she says.“From performing at Glastonbury to releasing my

I had so much fun, I’ve decided to get back outthere to do it again in 2016, and I can’t wait!“It’s nuts, to think I’m doing this, at this age!” addsthe 67 year old. “It’s kind of outrageous. It’s scary,in fact, if I think of it like that. But it feels like it

things that have driven me. I’ve always tried notto be vulnerable and this is allowing me to openup, in a way. I feel like I’ve grown up. And yet, theopposite is true, I feel like I’m just beginning.“I don’t think I’m emotionally grown up. Being inthe music business from an early age sort of stuntsyour growth in that way. This business is full ofreally young people. It’s hard as you get older to

do it as long as I want to.”

What can Bath audiences expect fromyour show?A lot of songs from my old albums, a lot of songsfrom my new album. I just want the people ofBath to be able to leave the show thinking ‘whata great night’. It takes effort to come out of thehouse, so I want them to feel that it was worth itand they had a party. There will hopefully be a lotof emotions, a lot of dancing and a lot of singingalong too!

Will the show be unique to Bath?Yes, every show I do will be unique to everycity because I’ve invited each city’s local MilitaryWives Choir on stage with me. Bath’s one of theplaces I’m really looking forward to visiting.

Where would we find you when you’renot working? With my grandchildren; they make me veryhappy. I’m very content with my life.

Your best ever holiday?A cruise on the Bosporus in Turkey in atraditional three-masted wooden sailing boat,a gulet, stands out in my memory as a fantasticholiday and a beautiful destination. I went withfriends and it was fun and relaxing at the sametime. We sailed to Istanbul and saw all the sights, which was a brilliant conclusion to my visit toTurkey as it was fascinating.

You still look every bit as amazing as youalways have, what are your health and

fitness tips?I give my system a rest and adjust my diet for amonth at the start of spring. Instead of fasting, which I don’t agree with, I simply cut down oncarbs and red meat and focus on fish, chicken, vegetables and lots of salads. Most importantly,I enhance every meal with handfuls of freshlychopped herbs, such as basil, mint, coriander andparsley, which make everything taste and smelldelicious. Spring is the perfect time to ensureyou’re up to date on all those routine healthchecks so you go into the year without any nigglyworries. I’m conscientious about Pilates anddance classes too. It’s vital to keep moving as ithelps you stay fit and feel younger.

The best advice you’ve ever been given? My father told me ‘Never forget, the leastcommon thing in the world is common sense’. It’shelped me realise that people don’t always reactin the way you think, the way they should, or theway you want them to. It’s really helped me dealwith the ups and downs of life.

As you have been diagnosed with PTSD,do you have any advice for those whosuffer with anxiety or fear?Try to live in the present. Keep going no matterwhat life throws at you. I’m just living in themoment, concentrating on what’s going on rightnow. I’ve done a lot of hard work to change theway I do things. I’m more accepting of myselfnow, warts and all, and therefore more acceptingof other people too. I have to address that everyday, though, because I can flip.

Quick-fire round with Lulu

The All-Star Stand-Up Tour 2016 presents four heavyweight comics – Gary Delaney, Pete Firman,Jarred Christmas and Sean Hughes – in the biggest comedy tour of the year at Frome’s MemorialTheatre this spring. We chat to them to find out what it takes to be funny and hear about their

worst gigs of all time.

#WVOICES

If you weren’t a comedian, what would yoube?Gary: The annoying guy in the office who thinkshe’s funny. I actually used to be a conferenceorganiser, so that’s probably what I’d still be doing. In my time doing that I met people like Bill Clinton,Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan and Tony Blair. I saymet, the conversation normally went like this ‘Thestage is this way, erm, hasn’t your security guard gota big gun?’

Sean: probably a psychiatrist - I think they’re kindof similar - you’re going around analysing stuff. IfI wasn’t doing it for laughs I’d be doing it to helppeople.

What’s been the worst gig of your careerso far?Gary: Berlin in 2002, they flew me out and assuredme the crowd would speak good enough English toget my jokes. I was following German comics whowere ripping it. I thought ‘Hang on, Germans arethe least funny people in the world, if they’re rippingit then how well will I do?’. The answer was verybadly indeed. I played for seven minutes to a politelybaffled silence. It’s one thing to understand a foreignlanguage. It’s quite another to understand wordplay.I died so badly they rewrote their guidance forvisiting comics to say ‘don’t do wordplay’.‘It’s lovely to be here in Berlin, I’ve never been herebefore but my Granddad used to visit regularly...when he was in the RAF’ - opening lines are soimportant aren’t they?

Jarred: I had one at a pub in Wales. Two guys who

were banned from all the pubs in town snuck in.They heckled me. I put them down. They got angry.Tried to attack me. Bar man intervened. Bad guyswung a punch at the bar man, missed, hit a girl atthe next table. Suddenly it was all on. Like a cowboyfilm. About 15 blokes trying to get rid of these twobad guys. The police were called. Turns out theywere part of a local gang. I had to have a policeescort out of town. That was pretty bad.

What do you do when you’re not working?Jarred: Parent the socks off my children.Gary: I watch horror, especially zombie films,I’ve even written one. As a man in his 40s withdisposable income and no kids I have a room in myhouse that is just full of horror memorabilia. I call itmy zombie room.Pete: I’m a bit of a workaholic. If I’m not performingI’m usually writing, or trying to come up with mynext big trick.

Who’s in your dream comedy club line-up?Alive or dead.Gary: Daniel Kitson (peerless improviser), WoodyAllen (an incredible club comic, his material ages wellwhich is very rare), Henny Youngman (he wrote‘Take my wife, please’), Max Miller (the music hallgag king) and Mitch Hedberg (another gag legendwhom I never got to see).

Jarred: 1980’s Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, Late90’s Eddie Izzard, 60’s Woody Allen and me. I wouldbe an idiot to not book myself on that line up.

Can you learn to be funny, or is it something

that has to come naturally?Gary: Lots of people have the base quality of beingwitty. That’s not so rare. Learning how to harness it?Very rare indeed. It takes many years of hard workand focus to get any good.

Jarred: You can learn techniques and tricks butthat will never beat being naturally funny. But youneed to work at it even if you are a natural. We allhave mates who are funny, but not many who couldmake it as professional comedians.

With so much comedy available online andon TV, why should people come and see livestand-up?Sean: Anything can happen on the night, it’sunpredictable, that’s what it’s all about. I can go outand do things I have no intention of doing - you justcan’t do that on TV. You can really connect with theaudience at a live show.

Gary: Because I’ve got two cats and a dog tosupport? Plus stand up doesn’t translate on telly. It’sa live medium. How does the performer relate to anaudience through a screen? You can’t. How do youtake your timing from a telly audience? You can’t.

Pete: Being in the room when it’s happening withother people is what it’s all about. Atmosphere, immediacy. You don’t get that sitting at a computerby yourself. Get amongst it.

Following the phenomenal decade-long success with The Agatha ChristieTheatre Company, which sold over twomillion tickets and continually played to

packed houses all around the UK, Bill Kenwrightpresents a new production from the creators ofthe unsurpassable mystery series Murder SheWrote and the award-winning TV detective seriesColumbo.Rehearsal for Murder, performed by The ClassicThriller Theatre Company, is set to appear at theTheatre Royal Bath next week.It will star real-life husband and wife duo RobertDaws and Amy Robbins who played a marriedcouple in over 80 episodes of the ITV series TheRoyal together and they will play a couple in thisstage production too.Robert who is also known for his roles in Poldark,Midsomer Murders and Coronation Street, andAmy who has appeared many other televisiondramas including Casualty, Dalziel and Pascoe andEastEnders, will perform with three of the mostpopular members of the Agatha Christie TheatreCompany: Susan Penhaligon, Robert Duncan andBen Nealon, along with Brookside’s Steven Pinderand Hollyoaks’ Lucy Dixon. In the story, which has in the past been adapted into

playwright Alex Dennison, is left heartbroken when

by Amy) is found dead from an apparent suicideafter the opening night of her stage debut. On the anniversary of that ill-fated night, Alexassembles the same cast and crew in the sametheatre, for a reading of his new play. But as the reading progresses, the play’ssimilarity to actual events becomes increasinglyuncomfortable for the participants, and it soonbecomes clear that Alex believes Monica wasmurdered and his new play is a devious cat-and-mouse chase to uncover her killer.

Meet Robert and Amy

How did you both get involved with theshow?ROBERT: We got asked to do it, simple as thatreally!AMY: We’ve both worked for Bill Kenwright inthe past, I did Blood Brothers for him in 2011 inthe West End.ROBERT: And I worked with him about 15 yearsago and here we are again. They very kindly cameto us about this play, offered us the parts and

we looked at it and thought, this is an interestingpiece. And the fact they offered it to us togethermade a big difference because we can look aftereach other a bit.AMY: And we can take the kids with us!

So, without giving too much away, tell me abit about the story and your characters?ROBERT: It’s about a writer called Alex who hasa relationship with Monica who’s a film star whohas decided to give up film stardom in Hollywoodand move back to London. Alex has this play, astylish comedy of manners with a perfect part forMonica Welles.AMY: So it’s the first night and Monica is founddead. She’s fallen off her balcony. And the play isbased a year later when Alex sets about trying tofind out - with the help of the original cast - whathappened to her, how she died, as he suspects oneof them has killed her.

You two are actually married in real life andplayed a married couple in The Royal - andyou’re back playing a couple again at theTheatre Royal Bath!ROBERT: We met on my first day on set of TheRoyal.AMY: Yes, we met on the job, so to speak, andwe were married by the end of the first series. And because we were married in real life, theywrote it into the plot of the show.ROBERT: We pretty much honeymooned on set.AMY: We did indeed. And we’ve been married13 years now. It’s nice we can do this togetherbecause usually, if one of us is away filming or ontour, it usually means great stretches away fromthe family so we thought this would be nice. Andit’s what we’re used to because of how we met.People often ask us if it’s difficult working togetherand I say it’s mostly what we know.ROBERT: For eight years on The Royal our twogirls were born and brought up with it so the kidsare steeped in the whole process of the industry, their early years were brought up in hotel roomsand unit bases in strange locations.

So, what do your children think about theiractor parents and this tour?ROBERT: The kids are looking forward to it.They’re of an age now where they’re ok if we’reaway from home and it works out that during theschool holidays and various other things, they cancome with us, so they’re quite excited about it.AMY: I’ve always been very conscious about not

wanting to leave them when they were youngerand I never wanted to go on tour, but the childrenare the right age now, and they’re sort of usedto it, apart from the one bit they cannot standwhich is what they saw in rehearsal the otherday. We had to bring them in with us, and there’sa scene where we kiss and I could actually hearthem groaning and one of them screamed, “ohDaaaaaad!” They were appalled! They’ve watchedRobert being stabbed with a pair of scissors onThe Royal, me being murdered on stage in variousplays, people being shot in Blood Brothers, they’reentirely used to it all.

This is the first time you’ve trodden theboards together. How different will it bestarring on stage to being in front of acamera?ROBERT: It’s far more terrifying!AMY: But, having said that, we are both trainedto do this. We both went to RADA (RoyalAcademy of Dramatic Arts) and when you go todrama school, that’s what you train to do, and Ithink it’s what you always think you’re going to doand when you end up doing mostly telly, you getdistracted for a while. But when you come back toyou, you go, ah, this is what I trained to do and itall comes back to you.

Robert, Bath audiences will remember yourlast performance at the Theatre Royal inan unforgettable production of Blackbird in2008, are you looking forward to touring toBath again?ROBERT: I like being on tour, I like the differentchange every week and I like the audiences you geton tour. Every week is an opening night so it keepsyou on your toes. Each theatre is completelydifferent and of course, things change. So youcould turn up in one theatre and there are certainthings in certain places, and then the next theatreyou visit those things aren’t there, which can bea bit nerve-wracking, but it keeps you stimulated. You also have the chance to play the mostwonderful theatres, Bath, Cambridge, the Kings inEdinburgh, they are wonderful theatres, so that’sa definite plus. Our kids are excited about thisbecause some venues on the tour, Edinburgh andBath, fit quite nicely into Easter. They do have tosit through a lot but they’re very good actually.

Wearable tech

The mingling of technology and fashion is creating waves in thefashion world.

Digital gadgets embedded into accessories and clothing give gar-ments cutting-edge functionality and style, but the secret is the waythat sensors are discreetly incorporated into the design. This year,Bath in Fashion (BIF) is working alongside Bath-based wearabletech expert, Bonnie Binary, AKAAnnie Lywood who is staging aworkshop to introduce the concept of wearable tech. Participantshave the opportunity to embed a circuit within a brooch or braceletand create their very own technological project.Bonnie Binary is an e-textile consultancy and makery which bringstogether expert associates in software, hardware and textiles to re-search and develop new products and make prototypes for wearabletech applications.“Bonnie Binary’s designs are the friendly face of wearable tech, andwe see great potential for our interfaces in all manner of fashion, entertainment, active-wear and well-being products and applica-

colourful and fun-to-use.”Annie will be sharing some of her colourful creations at BIF;probably the most exciting development is her illuminated Valkerie

The light pattern on the back of the digitally-embroidered jacket iscontrolled by a mobile phone.

Ahead of Bath in Fashion, we explore the worldof wearable technology, magical millinery anda fresh take on neo-nautical.

Millinery magic

Back by popular demand, the Royal School of Needlework(RSN) is running a millinery workshop at BIF. Working along-side the glorious haute couture gown designed by NicholasOakwell for the Britain is GREAT campaign, audience memberswill be tasked with creating their own headpieces using basicmillinery techniques and embellishing it with feathers and beads. The RSN were commissioned to hand sew every one of the twohundred thousand ostrich feathers that feature on the NicholasOakwell gown designed for super model Erin O’Connor (whichwill be on loan to BIF by special permission of No 10 DowningStreet and displayed in the Assembly Rooms during the week). At the event, Susan Kay-Williams, Chief Executive of the RoyalSchool of Needlework will deliver a guest lecture on the resur-gence of popularity of embroidery in fashion.

Nautical is always on trend, and West Country brand Seasalt will beholding a Sailor Shirt Embellishment Workshop during BIF wherethere will be an opportunity to work with the creative team behindSeasalt and add your stamp to a nautical classic sailor shirt.Sophie Chadwick, Seasalt’s co-founder and senior textile designer, will also be in conversation during BIF - in a talk billed as NauticalNarrative - to discuss her journey and success in the industry.Ever since she could hold a pencil Sophie knew she wanted to be anartist, and, upon graduating a textiles and fashion degree, she begansupplying her printed silk scarves, handmade cards and paintingsto galleries and independent shops. This led to her developing theclothing brand which is inspired by Cornwall, the place she wasborn. Over the last 35 years the business has opened 30 shops acrossthe UK and Sophie is still involved in the business everyday – creat-ing more unique prints and developing new products.

Treatments for women – aguide to some gynaecologicalprocedures

Here, Mr William Dartey and Mr AhmedMohamed, consultant gynaecologistsfrom Emersons Green and Devizes NHS

Treatment Centres, outline the gynaecologicaltreatments available in the UK

We provide a range of gynaecological treatmentsand surgery for NHS patients across the region.

We undertake various different investigations forour patients. One of them is called a hysteroscopy, which is a procedure to look at the inside of yourwomb using a small telescope. It is common for a biopsy (removing small piecesof tissue) to be performed at the same time. Itis commonly used to help to identify conditions

single leg deadliftThis works your posterior chain of musclesthat are often neglected as well as yourankle and leg stability which is superimportant when running because you areconstantly only ever on one leg. Stand onyour left leg with your hands behind yourback, right leg off the floor. Keeping yourleft leg very slightly bent, squeeze yourbottom and, whilst keeping a straight backand both hips facing forward, slowly hingeforward whilst keeping tension in the rightleg as it lifts up behind you. Slowly returnto the start position without putting yourright foot down. Do 8-12 repetitions eachside.

Congratulations to all the BathHalf runners that crossed thefinish line this month. There’sno rest for the wicked, and now

we’re on to thinking about Race for Life’s5K and 10K runs to help raise funds forcancer research. In the races, participants are encouragedto walk the distances if they aren’t capableof running – but some people mayunderestimate the distance and not be fullyprepared.I’d like to help get people race-ready….I encourage anyone taking part in theraces in June to start their training now sothey have plenty of time to build up theirdistance gradually.I’d suggest training three times a week, starting off with a mix of jogging andwalking.

side plankThis will work those oblique musclesand also help balance out our potentiallyweaker sides with our stronger sides. Lieon your side with your legs straight andyour feet, knees, hips and shoulders in linewith your right elbow directly under yourright shoulder. Brace your abs, push yourhips off the floor and hold the position for60 seconds. Repeat for 3 sets.

Workout of the week

If you have amedical condition or injury, consult your doctor before performing any of these exercises

Remember to drink plenty of fluids whiletraining especially as the weather warmsup. You don’t need to be guzzling Lucozadeor other sugary energy drinks, especiallyif you are trying to lose weight. Why notmake your own drink of coconut watermixed with water, a super tiny pinch ofsalt and maybe some apple juice? This will

give you a good balance of electrolytes and“sugars” which are important if you aregoing to sweat a lot.People often neglect stretching. Do adynamic warm up before you start to runthen afterwards be sure to stretch yourlower body – calves, hip flexors, hamstrings, quads, glutes and your lower back.Getting the right footwear is also importantand Bath has several shops that will giveyou good advice such as John Moore Sportsand Running Bath Ltd.Body-weight exercises build up your generalfitness levels and core strength which willhelp with your running; try my workoutbelow.I am offering a free training week to anyonein Bath who has registered to run Racefor Life this year. guessing, about 99 per cent of youreading this that will disagree. You willtell me you have experienced it; that ithas created real feelings for you; andthat it is a very “real” thing.I am not dishonouring any feelings youhave had in the past, or are havingcurrently, or are expecting to have in thefuture that you have named as “stress”,but allow me to unpick it for you and toexplain. There is a circumstance/ person/ event, and you decide what it means personallyto you (this is based on yourconditioning and programminginstalled over years of being alive). Then, thinking follows – “Thatcircumstance/ person/ event is annoying/irritating/ limiting/ scary/ worrying”.Then, feeling follows thinking (youare only ever feeling your thoughts). You go into over-thinking. Symptomsfollow – lost sleep, increased heartbeat, headaches, upset stomach etc. Diagnosis– “Stress”.There is an appearance that all of theabove comes FROM the circumstance/person/ event but it never does – it isyour thinking ABOUT it and the processthat goes into action from that thinkingthat creates all of what follows. So what to do? If you are new toquestioning your thinking it may be best

to enlist the help of a friend to ask youthe following:1. Question your thoughts. Do youabsolutely know that what might happenwill happen? Are you 100 per cent surethat the meaning you have given it isthe only meaning available? What elsecould it mean? What else is possible?2. What happens when you believethe thinking you have about it? Howdo you react physically and mentally? What emotions arise? What behavioursfollow? Notice what the effect of takingthe thought seriously is.3. If you didn’t believe the thought, how would you feel? If you chose analternative view point, that could also bepossible, how would you feel then?4. If you didn’t believe the thought, what different action would you take? What might it free you up to do?The thing is, we rarely seecircumstance/ people/ events as theyreally are. We colour them in, distortthem, and delete information thatmoulds them into a form that can lookworrying and as if it can have an effecton us. Even something like the loss of ajob can look big and scary one minuteand then as if it’s the best thing thatcould have happened to us the next. It ispurely down to what we are believing inthe moment.

So there is this thing called Stress. It accounts for a large proportionof days off work. You can getmedication for it. You can buy

countless books about it. You can evengo on courses to avoid it.And… you can’t weigh it. You can’t seeit. You can’t put it in a wheelbarrow…because it doesn’t “physically” exist. Itis a concept and a process – completelygenerated from within; from your ownthinking. Now, at this point there will be, I’m

left, right and centre.

emerged in the 1990s as web marketing grew and, until fairly recently, were primarily the work ofindividuals before businesses saw value in theirability to share company products, ideas and ethos in

a softer and friendlier way, bolstering traditional PRand marketing efforts.Blogs provide commentary on a particular subject;others function as more personal online diaries andsome operate more as online brand advertising of aparticular individual or company.Every credible business has a blog, or aspires tohave one and in which case may employfreelancers, like me, to create blogs for theirbusinesses. The birth of the blogger grew fast intoan industry that sees some making incredible careersfrom their creative efforts.British fashion blogger Susie Lau’s blog Style

Bubble, is one of the world’s most widelyrecognisable blogs since it started in 2006. Susiehas gone on to write for most of the fashion industrypublications and is often seen front row at all themajor catwalk shows and invited to comment of themost fashionable of stages, including our very ownBath in Fashion.Bath is a hot bed of creative writing, as we all know, and we have our fair share of blogging actionhappening here too. SoW asked me to pull togethera list of my favourite Bath bloggers. So here is mypersonal pick. Some big, some not so obvious, others corporate, some more personal…

Zoella

As a Bath in Fashion blogger herself, ourW lifestyle columnist Sarah Baker takes a look at someof the city’s most colourful, influential and innovative bloggers around.

ZoellaFirst up is the West’s Blogging sensation, Zoella. Oftenalso vlogging (video blogging) with her brother JoeSugg. This local lass from Lacock has found globalstardom from her bedroom. She started out withbeauty blogs and now is the go-to lifestyle expertfor teenagers. She lately said that blogging was like amodern-day diary. Too true. I particularly like herwest-country accent. Good clean fun.@Zoella

Sal GodfreyThe foodie beauty, writes her blog Sal’s Kitchen. Salcan be found in many a Bath coffee hotspot workingaway on her blogs, having tweet up sessions withother food lovers and teasing up with incrediblepictures of her culinary genius. If you spend far toomuch time indoors, like I do, then a blog like Mike’s isthe perfect lazy girl’s travel guide. And if that doesn’tpull you in, maybe his love of cider and securing itsfuture might be of interest.@MikeyC74

Sam MacCuaigBath is all the better for the coolest of hang outs thatis Colonna & Hunter, and I don’t even drink coffee (Ido like craft beers though)! If you like either of thesethings then take a look at the uber slick blog pageof Sam MacCuaig, Barista at said coffee joint. We allknow that these guys put Bath on the national coffeestage and Sam’s easy style and trendy pics are theperfect reading matter when killing time over a hotbeverage of your choice.@sammaccuaig

Viv GroskopLast and by no means least is the brilliant BathLiterature Festival’s artistic director, comedienne andall round lovely gal, Viv Groskop.
