Dear Parents

We have had a very busy end to this academic year.

On Saturday 17th June our swim squad; comprising of Ella, Oliver, Mia, Anton and Imogen, competed in the ESSA National Schools’ Relay Finals in Sheffield. After travelling up the previous day, they arrived at the Ponds Forge International Pool rested and ready for the finals to begin. Our teams were hugely successful and raced well both gaining PBs. The mixed stroke relay came through the heats to the final, where they were positioned 7th nationally. Our free-style relay also came through the heats to compete in the final, finishing 8th nationally. This was a huge achievement and a direct result of their dedication and commitment to working together as a team. Miss Govan is, for the third year running, our “Coach of the Year” for inspiring and preparing the children to their very high standard of swimming and to this amazing success. We are so very proud of them all.

On Friday 23rd June the Prep School children took part in our much anticipated Sports Day. The sun shone and it was lovely to see so many families cheer the children on. Key Stage 1 took to the field first for a festival of activities ably supported by the Year 6 pupils who led each group of children through each activity as part of their Junior Sports Leader Award. The children completed their time on the running track with some great sprint races and finished their event covered in “well done” stickers for great participation and amazing effort. The toddlers’ and parents’ races were enjoyed; with the competitors finishing each event to great applause.

It was then the turn of Key Stage 2 to take to the field. As always the atmosphere of sportsmanship was incredible, with the children offering tremendous support and encouragement to their peers and also cheering loudly for their Houses. Throughout the events the House points were very close and at the end of the afternoon it was St. Patrick’s House which was victorious. Congratulations to all the children who took part and to the catering team for providing a delicious barbeque - it was a fantastic Sports Day!

Pupils from Years 1 to 6 took to the stage at the Prep School yesterday afternoon for a spectacular “Summer Soirée”. Every class from Key Stage 2 charmed the audience with their class pieces. The individual performances were equally strong and included a fine mix of vocals and instrumentals. New this year was the Ballroom Dancing Club who performed the Cha Cha, a Pasodoble and a Viennese Waltz. Miss Faye Neave and the peripatetic teachers were congratulated for producing a wonderfully entertaining afternoon celebrating the abilities of every child.

Our assembly hall was crammed with parents, children and staff on Wednesday as the children of Year 6 presented a farewell assembly. The morning started with us guessing each year 6 pupil from an old photograph and progressed to each pupil talking about their memories of the Prep School. Happy, amusing and sometimes poignant memories of the children’s years in the Prep School were shared. They talked about their hopes and aspirations for the future and the rest of the School wished them good luck.

A significant number of children from Years 5 and 6 have taken part in our Annual Tennis Tournament this week. The standard of tennis was high with some fine play and sensational rallies; especially in the later stages of the competition. The final placings were as follows

1st place Oliver G-H 2nd Jia Xin3rd Seb Y 4th James WCongratulations!

It is at this time of year that we say goodbye and good luck from everyone at the Prep School to our Year 6 leavers. We are also saying goodbye to Lesley Crighton one of our teaching assistants who will be putting away her librarian’s stamp, hanging up her Forest School hat and giving back the minibus keys(!) and to Pern one of our catering assistants, thank you so much for the delicious food and all the extra pounds that we have accumulated!

With best wishes for a lovely summer break,

Maria Maslin

Dear parents,

It has been, probably, the fullest final two weeks of the summer term that I can remember. We have enjoyed so many lovely experiences as we have basked in this gorgeous weather. Hardly a day has gone by without something for the students to look forward to and I am so grateful to all the staff and senior students for their help in making the end of term so memorable.

We have had trips to the theatre, to Ypres, to the Globe, to Chessington and to Dover Castle. On the sporting front there have been magical moments in cricket, rounders, athletics and croquet – all brought together at the fabulous sports dinner and then rounded off with house sports. The performing arts have flourished too and audiences at both the dance show and summer concert were dazzled by the range of student talent. Many enriching activities have been offered as well and there has been a flurry of interesting careers events and networking lunches. The Life Skills programme organized for the lower 6th was the best ever and students were given the chance to gain a TEFL qualification, learn First Aid, develop skills in financial management and even get to look under the bonnet of a car to familiarize themselves with motor maintenance. The new Sixth Form prefects also had a morning of leadership training and they were challenged with making their mark in their final year and in leaving a meaningful legacy.

It has equally been a time to focus on the Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts – the ones who have finished punishing external exams. They all enjoyed leaving picnics, moving graduation ceremonies and, best of all, they attended extraordinarily well organised social events – a prom for the Year 11s and the most incredible summer ball for the Year 13s. I am especially grateful to the dedicated FOBAS team for all that they did to decorate and host the Summer Ball and all those who attended that special event were overwhelmed by the stunning transformation of the Abbot’s Hall and library.

We don’t just bid farewell this week to leaving students, but we must also say goodbye to two teachers who are moving on. Mr Cleeve has taught Science and Chemistry at the Abbey for 7 years and took charge of KS4 for two of those years. He has been an inspirational and popular teacher and we wish him well as he moves on to join Mr Pawson at Trinity School in Sevenoaks. Dr. Michelle Tickner leaves the Science department too and we would like to wish her well in her promotion to Head of Department, starting this September.

I would like to bring further staff news to your attention. Mrs Charlotte Buckland returns from maternity leave this week and will head up student welfare and well-being whilst resuming her teaching of dance and PE. That leaves me to formally announce that Mr Usher has been appointed as Deputy Headmaster for the senior school having done a brilliant job as acting Deputy for the last few months. We are very grateful for all that he has done for the whole Battle Abbey community and I am delighted that his new position received unanimous support from the student body.

Finally, it leaves me to wish you all a very happy summer break and I will see many of you again when we return for results in mid-August.

Best wishes, David Clark

‘I have now finished my final year at Falmouth Art School. I got a First in Fine Art Illustration, so I am ]really pleased. I think I’m going to stay at Falmouth and do a masters in Authorial Illustration. I thought you might like to see some

photographs from my degree show. There were framed etchings on the wall and sound recordings of spoken word and piano playing. The text was from a short descriptive piece I wrote called ‘The Room with Turquoise Tiles’ and the piano pieces are Debussy and Mozart which I recorded on the lecture theatre piano. I have also attached a sound recording of the piece.’

Prep School NewsNew Teachers for Year 5 and 6This term the whole of Year 7 led a morning of Maths with all of the Year 5 and 6 students from the Prep School. The Year 7 students had designed and created their own mini-Maths lessons and activities that they delivered to the students at the Prep School. They worked really hard and put a lot of thought, time and effort into making their activities really engaging, exciting and educational for the younger students.

The activities and lessons included: • Maths-word Taboo• Towers of Hanoi• The Maths challenge• Blindfolded shape deducing• Cake shop card sort• A murder mystery puzzle• A Maths treasure hunt• Shape building and calculations• Maths splat• A Maths relay• Guess the number of sweets in the jar

Well done to Olly R who won the whole jar of sweets with the closest guess as to how many sweets were in the jar. There were 309 sweets in the jar and Olly guessed 300!

Everyone had a fantastic time, got to spend the morning out in the sun and learnt a lot of Maths!

Swimming SuccessThe Prep School Swim Squad travelled to Sheffield on Saturday to represent the School at the ESSA Swimming Championships 2017. Facing tough competition, both the front crawl relay and medley relay teams successfully raced through to the finals, where they came 8th and 7th respectively.

The children swam amazingly, with both teams achieving new PBs! Well done to everyone, they were a credit to themselves and the School.

Thanks also to all the families who came along to support the swimmers.

Maths Team in National FinalsThe extremely talented Battle Abbey Maths quiz team, consisting of Jia-Xin You (Captain), Oliver Golding Hazell, CJ Morgan and Sophia Ashir, recently participated in a National Semi-Final at Redhill. Competing against 11 different schools from Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey & London. The squad played brilliantly, to achieve third place in such a hard-fought and challenging competition is an amazing achievement!

We are so proud of the talented children who not only practised hard for the quiz, but performed calmly and assuredly in a tense competition.

A Caring VisitOne the 16th June, it was National Care Home Open Day. The emphasis of this day is on the importance of connecting with local communities, developing lasting relationships and encouraging intergenerational rapport.

Our Year 5 & 6 students mingled and chatted with the residents, sung for them and generally brightened their day.

A Spriritual Journey for Year 5To support Year 5’s Religious Studies’ topics this term they have been visiting local places of Worship. The first visit was to a Mosque in Hastings where they met the Imam. He showed them around and explained the roles and importance of various areas within the Mosque.

The second two visits were to St John the Evangelist Church in St Leonards and Christ Church in Ore. Seeing two places of worship in one day meant they could see the differences and similarities between the two Churches. They were encouraged by Rev. Lee to participate in role play and have discussions about the different life events that are celebrated within the Church.

Who’s for Tennis? On Monday 3rd July some very excited students (and teachers) attended the first day of the Lawn Tennis Association Championships at Wimbledon.

They were hoping to see some famous faces on number one court and had a thrilling day!

Club of The Week: Woodwork ClubDuring the course of the Summer Term KS2 children were offered the opportunity to try their hand at learning some new woodwork skills - or indeed to develop any existing skills they already had. Following the understandably necessary initial safety briefing, where everyone in the group decided that they did in fact want to keep all of their important bits in good working order, it was time for the children to plan their ‘Lego Coat Hook’. Children first designed the size, colours and block layout of their project before exploring the wood available and the tools to be used in their endeavours.

Throughout the course of the project the children learnt how to saw, sand, measure, paint and use a screwdriver among other DIY skills.

All children showed a wonderful team spirit and proved more than willing to help their friends and other members of the club in helping them finish their painting in the time available. The Prep School Woodworkers were suitably proud with everything they had achieved! Throughout the whole term, each of them learnt new skills, developed existing ones, worked well in a team and really did themselves proud.

Sixth Form Summer Ball

Careers CornerSwim Talk UKLuke Hardy from SwimUK came to speak with some of our students over lunch on Wednesday 21st June.

He told us about the amazing opportunities currently being promoted to students aged 16+. Fully funded short courses are being run to help young people gain valuable qualifications, such as Pool Life Guarding and Level 2 Fitness Instruction.

For more information on Enrolment Session dates visit their website. It seems like too good an opportunity to miss. We are very grateful to Luke for inspiring us, especially so on one of the hottest days of the year!

Student ParamedicFormer pupil Alex Grant is currently a 2nd year Student Paramedic for the London Ambulance Service studying BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science at Anglia Ruskin University.

He described the passion that drove him to join the Service and the important lessons he has learnt along the way.

Do keep an eye on the list of upcoming speakers featured on the School Website’s Career Page.

We encourage our students to come to as many of these Networking Lunches and After School Careers

Talks as they can in order to keep their options open and minds curious. Thank you to William Ashenden (Year 10) who has attended nearly all of the talks this term; good on you!

Alumni Neo Wong - Focus on ScienceAlumni student Neo Wong continued his further education at London School of Economics and Political Science.

‘LSE is highly focused on fields like economics and social sciences, its prestige allows students to be a strong applicant when it comes to internships and job interviews.

Studying sciences definitely helped me to pick up vital skills, working with fellow students to conduct research and deliver presentations has built up my confidence in public speaking and my interpersonal skills.

Sciences subjects are hard and intellectually stimulating, it requires large amounts of independent studying and online research. And these skills are essential and minimum requirements in university-level study, sciences subjects provide us with the opportunity to start practising early. Being flexible in studying methods is crucial to success.

Topics like organic chemistry and medical physics will enable students to obtain diverse approaches to problem-solving, develop creative thinking and appreciate practical uses of sciences.

It doesn't matter if the degree you want to apply for is relevant to sciences or not, students who can accomplish science subjects will always stand out. They know how difficult it is to study sciences and what kind of skills you have in order to do well in sciences. The strong students are those who can apply skills they have learned elsewhere to the fields they want to specialise in.’

Creative Research Education and Talent Enrichment AwardsThe Brief

The brief was simple: students had to come up with an idea that will shape the future of education. Schools have not changed much over the past 70 years. What will schools be like in 20, 50 or 100 years’ time? Will schools still exist? Will computers be important? What should the learning be like? Should it be fun or not? The students were split into small groups and received input from our education experts to help them enter into practical discussions. Students spent a total of two and a half hours thinking, planning, researching and producing the project.

Half-way through the workshop, Linda Hopkins (Head of Drama) gave a presentation skills masterclass to the year group. Each group had to pitch their idea in front of our judges, Marcus Cherrill, Eric Demoncheaux, Peter Hall, Richard Taylor, and Farouk Tumi.

‘Everyone worked brilliantly with people they would not normally work with. I have seen some good ideas, great presentations and good thinking. I was impressed by the persistence and resilience of all students. It is very difficult for people to get up and present as not everybody does it and not everybody wants to do it. Your students did a great job.’ Richard Taylor and Marcus Cherrill

‘It was interesting to observe how each group broke up the tasks. A scribe took notes and each had an ‘ideas person’ coming up with more ideas than the group could even capture! They all worked very well together and managed to quickly agree on the ideas they wanted to pursue. By being in new teams and not in their usual friendship groups, every student was pushed out of their comfort zone’ Peter Hall.

The Content

The subjects tackled by students ranged from subjects as diverse as ‘changing the school environment’ to ‘acquiring life skills such as money management, cooking, and car maintenance’. Some students had a very strong desire to be given the chance to express their independence, individuality and choice of what should be taught during the school day. Many students wanted to choose their own curriculum. Another great idea put forward was to start the school day at 12:00 and finish at 20:00.

The winners were decided by looking at which subjects had the greatest capacity to be used beyond the school and the judges thought that the concepts of e-lessons and Virtual Reality had the greatest potential to transform not only schools but also how teachers ‘do’ education.

‘Ultimately, Battle Abbey School aims to build leaders of all kinds and everyone was a winner during the workshop. Students came up with plenty of innovative ideas, they were thinking on the spot, and were able to communicate their ideas clearly using real, convincing and concrete arguments showing that they had the power and ability to make them happen. The feedback from the workshop was very positive and all saw great value in working together and learn from one another.’ Eric Demoncheaux

‘Between the ages of 13 and 16, teenage brains are rewiring which makes teenagers very tired. It is natural to want to get up later and want to work later but I don’t know how this timetable would work with other year groups who are not having the same sort of experience. It is an idea worth exploring as school buildings remain unused beyond a certain point of the day. In state schools, where so much money is spent running them, they should perhaps get a better value from their assets and spreading the timetable might be a way of doing that.’ Peter Hall.

Who was the Best Roman God?By Felix Rodgers and Harrison Todd

Inspired by the UK General Election, the Intermediate Latin class held an election to decide who was the best Roman god. But what makes one god better than another? Our class decided on a list of attributes which would identify a “great” god. These included:

• Scope of influence, frequency of influence, responsible use of power• Benefit to humans and kindness to people• Good myths and legends• Cool outfits and symbols• Fun and good parties

Thinking only about the male gods on this occasion, nominations were received for Apollo, Bacchus, Mars, Mercury, Pluto and Vulcan. A first round of voting whittled this list down to a 2-way contest between Apollo and Mercury.

Felix, James and Klara campaigned for Mercury. Here’s their campaign pitch:

‘First, Mercury was the God of communication, which is very important because without it we wouldn’t be able to speak to each other or communicate in any other way. Mercury’s communication skills could possibly prevent wars between the Gods, thus avoiding the death of many, many humans. Since Mercury was also the god of borders he kept the people from fighting one another. Mercury was also the god of finance, and without him there would be no money, which means that there would be no means of trade. He used a tortoise shell and a cow’s intestines to make the world’s first lyre to give us music. He is also the God of fun and games. What’s not to like?!Mercury was very clever and he has lots of good stories. When he was just one day old he escaped from his mother and travelled to Apollo’s home, where he stole a cow. He then lead Apollo’s cattle towards the road, which caused havoc on the roads. Mercury then snuck back home to his mother. Mercury had pranked the Sun God! Mercury is better than Apollo, who had a habit of giving the plague to anyone who angered him. Once Apollo gave the plague to the Greeks for 9 days. This is extremely dangerous, and it is not good for a God to easily lose his temper.

Oli, Phoebe and Harrison campaigned for Apollo. Here’s what they had to say in support of the Sun God.’

‘Apollo was always good to humanity. As the god of medicine and healing he was extremely important. He was also god of inspiration, poetry, music and the arts, all of which just make life more enjoyable. Apollo was the god of light, and rode the chariot that drives the sun. This means that without Apollo plant life would be non-existent, the entire food chain would be destroyed, and the human race could not survive. Compared to other gods, the frequency of his influence on everyday life was high. Quite obviously, the sun comes up every day, but also music, art, and healing and so on can be seen everywhere in life. Apollo has lots of good stories and was pretty impressive from birth. When he was only 4 days old he killed a dragon from the underworld to protect his mother Leto.In conclusion, Apollo was not only powerful but kind. He used his power responsibly to make life for humans better, to let humans heal and give them the tools to heal themselves, and to make all life have food to eat.’

Miss Bishop had the casting vote, and Apollo was chosen as the “best” of the Roman gods.

Raiders of the lost quadratsGridded quadrats were used to measure plant populations behind the PAC. On returning to the lab, the data was analysed, evaluated and conclusions drawn.

A very rewarding lesson for Year 8!

The second innings saw LOGS gather themselves and, through some impressive batting, secured the win as the rain really started to come down.

Girl of the game was voted Thea who not only was the highest rounder scorer for BAS but made some incredible outfield catches.

U13A v Beechwood

The U13s finished the season with their best performance yet, not only dominating in bat but also minimising the opponents opportunity to score with some brilliant fielding. Lucca Kelf and Evgenia Astapova led the way scoring 3 rounders each whilst the rest of the team chipped away.

The BAS side all pulled together in field only allowing a score of 2 & 1.5 rounders per inning to slip past their tight guard. Jemima Larkin tracked the ball avidly catching out numerous players.

GolfFixture against Buckswood

‘On Thursday the 8th of June, the Battle Abbey School Golf Club had their first official competition against the Buckswood Golf Team. It was a sunny day and there was a great atmosphere with players from each team willing to play their part. Pairs were picked to face off against each other from both teams with the exception of the elected best player from each team who had to face off in a 1v1, our elected player was William Hale. It was a great competition with wins from both teams, the score by the end of the matches was a draw at 2 – 2 and we are looking forward to playing against them again.’ Angus Graham (Year 12) – Golf Captain

‘Battle Abbey Open’

This year’s ‘Battle Abbey Open’ saw the Battle Abbey Golfers attend a pitch and putt par 3 course. Everyone enjoyed themselves and played very well. It was a beautiful day and it was nice to get outside and relax. After some amazing shots, some ok shots and some shots where the ball went shooting into a rabbit hole(!) the game came to an end.

‘In a tournament there is always a winner. It was very close this year with just one shot difference between first and second place. In second place was Will in Sixth Form and I was fortunate (and skillful) enough to come in 1st place. I was presented with a trophy and we all went back to school after a lovely afternoon. Everyone did really well and our coach /pro, Shaun, was impressed by everyone’s attitude and performance.’
