    BATTLEFIELD NEWS

    Assistant Director (Claude Revely)

Chapter Director (Gordon Combs) Greetings and Blessings my GWRRA family, Friends for fun, safety and knowledge. That's GWRRA's tag line and we certainly live up to that. Please allow me to explain why I say that. Our February dinner ride email went out for a Valentines Dinner at the Log Cabin Restaurant. I received some normal reply's from some fa-miliar names, Dan and Martha Jo, Larry and Melanie, Lyle and Barbara and of course Julie and I, but I also received a reply from a familiar name but not a familiar face. You see, ever since my first stint as Chapter Direc-tor (and I am on my third) I have seen the name of Joe "Duke" and Peggy Herron but had never met them. Joe is a lifetime member having joined GWRRA in September 93 right here in our own back yard, but his military career and now his gig as a long dis-tance trucker have kept him and Peg-gy from coming out and meeting us. But that all changed after he replied that they would like to join us. They came in and quickly found us in the back and sat down at our table. I pro-ceeded to introduce them to all and even mentioned that Dan was a Charter Member of Chapter E. Within minutes, we are all talking, laughing and sharing stories. To everyone sitting around us, they would never have known we just met Duke and Peggy. It was like we had been friends since 1993. You see, this is what I love about

GWRRA.... my friends both old and new. My best friends in all the world are the ones in my Battlefield Wings family. Just in the last few years we have welcomed James Antone and his girlfriend Lisa, and Jim and Trudy Girod. All four of them quickly became friends and now they all serve as Team leaders. I can not mention everyone in this newsletter, but I want you to know how much all of you mean to me, you truly are family. Your Team Leaders have been very busy planning rides for this year. We will have a dinner ride most months along with destination rides. Please mark your calendars for these next 3 upcoming events.....February 21st our Chapter Social Gathering, March 10th Dinner ride to Glory Days Grill in Culpeper, April 14th Maintenance Day at Charlie and Ellen Smith's home. We are also making plans to attend our sister chapters events, Rally in the Val-ley and Wing Ding. We also have a Flor-ida Keys trip planned so look for more emails to come. This is going to be a very busy year with all we have planned plus all the triathlons we have scheduled. Speaking of triathlons, at our last team leader meeting, someone suggested to me that we schedule some dinner rides around some of our more distant tri-athlon locations, so that is just what we are going to do. Wow, what a busy year we are going to have keeping and making friends for fun, safety and knowledge.

Auxiliary Lighting for Motorcycles Bill Number: HB 1464 Introduced by Delegate Robinson by Request of VCOM This bill would allow motorcyclists to utilize LED type auxiliary lights to in-crease visibility of motorcycles, espe-cially at night. Auxiliary side lighting lessens the chance of a collision caused by an automobile or truck changing lanes into a motorcycle. Sev-eral states neighboring Virginia (Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee & West Virginia) do not prohibit such lighting, or have adopted similar legislation in order to allow motorcyclists to take advantage of the benefit of this type of lighting should they wish. The bill passed out of the House of Delegates unanimously. It has been referred to the Senate Transportation committee but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing. When it is scheduled VCOM will publish the hear-ing date along with a list of the email addresses for each member of the Senate Transportation Committee so that you can voice your support for the bill should you wish to do so. Read more about this bill at the follow-ing link: https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=181&typ=bil&val=hb1464&submit=GO

HB 1464, the auxil-iary light bill that was introduced by Delegate Roxann Robinson at the

request of the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM) passed out of the Senate Transportation Committee with an amendment on a 12-1 vote. Senator Deeds was the sole no vote. The bill amends state code to

RIDE COORDINATOR: L Y L E S C H R U M P F Hello all, as riding season is almost upon us here are some tips and thoughts to remember: This is the most important process the rider should perform. Rule # 1 says, “If it can happen, it usually will,” therefore preventive mainte-nance is imperative. Mechanical failure during a ride isn’t fun and

can be fatal. Taking a few minutes to do a proper inspection will help ensure safe operation of your motorcycle. Proficiency in your controls, such as shift-ing, braking and turning, is imperative for safe riding. Balancing, counter steering, quick stops, swerving, and cornering techniques should be practiced regularly. Proficient riders practice them at the beginning of each riding season to en-sure they are developed as habit. Once they are devoted to habit you may dis-cover you have fewer sudden hazards, and it may seem you have more time to deal with problems that do occur. Judging distance while riding is very diffi-cult. The pavement is passing by in a blur— much too quickly to make a men-tal measurement of distance. The best approach is to make time measurements. Pick a reference point such as a signpost or power pole and count the time it takes to get to that point. Count out loud, “one-thousand-and-one, one thousand-and-two.” … When you’ve measured your sight distance and compared it to your speed, you can make an intelligent deci-sion about your own performance. Prac-tice braking and checking your reaction times to see if they are longer or shorter than the time you’ve allowed. Once you’ve measured that for yourself, you can make your own decision on the rule. Here are some guidelines: SPEED MINIMUM SIGHT DISTANCE 40 to 50 mph 4 Sec. 50 to 60 mph 5 sec. 60 to 70 mph 6 sec. 70 to 80 mph 7 sec A margin time and space must be main-tained for safety. The rider's capabilities and limitations, motorcycle capability and limitations, and road and traffic con-ditions each play a part. The safety mar-gin is gone if a required maneuver calls for a skill beyond that of the rider. The safety margin is gone if a situation calls for more steering and/or braking than your motorcycle can provide. The safety

allow motorcyclists to take ad-vantage of LED type accent lighting in order to improve visibility to other motorists. The amendment, offered by Chairman Carrico, added lan-guage mandating that any lighting used on the motorcycle must be of a type designed for use on a motor vehicle. You can read more about the bill at the following link: https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=181&typ=bil&val=hb1464&submit=GO We expect the bill to pass out of the full Senate. It will then have to go back to the House of Delegates so that they can approve the Amendment as well. That should not be an issue. The bill would then go to the Governor's desk for his signature. After that, it would be-come law as of July 1, 2018.

margin is gone if there is no time or space to maneuver

I look forward to riding with everyone again soon and having those adventures that we all remember. Ride safe until next time.

Applebee’s corporate network. Therefore only RMH franchises were affected.

The company claims that the threat has been contained and that only guests that paid at hostess stations or with their server were affected. Those that used self-pay tabletop devices or online were not exposed.

RMH has put up a list of locations on their website that will show the time window that each restaurant w as at risk. They urge patrons to check this list to determine if they had a visit during the affected times and to take steps to protect themselves including notifying their bank of any fraudulent charges.

WEBDUDE TECH TIPS: ROB HARDISTY POS malware found at

    160 Applebee's restaurant locations

Customer financial data may have been exposed at more than 160 Apple-bee’s locations across the U.S. Res-taurant owner RMH Franchise Hold-ings, which has locations all over the United States, claims that it recently discovered malware on the point of sale (POS) terminals in its restaurants.

According to a report released by RMH, the malware may have exposed customer data to hackers. Information that could be at risk includes names, credit card num-bers, expiration dates, and CVV (card verification value) numbers. So basi-cally all the data needed to make fraudulent transactions over the phone or internet.

Locations were hit with the malware at varying times between November 2017 and January 2018.

“Upon learning of a potential incident, RMH promptly launched an investigation and obtained the help of leading cyber security forensics firms,” the company said. “Based on the experts’ investigation, RMH believes that unauthorized software placed on the point-of-sale system at certain RMH-owned and -operated Applebee’s restaurants was designed to capture payment card information and may have affected a limited num-ber of purchases made at those loca-tions.”

It is important to note that RMH has POS systems that are outside of the
