CITY and county leaders are trav-elling to London next week to meetthe Transport Secretary to demand aHigh Speed rail hub next to the M6 inNorth Staffordshire.
Crewe station is in line to get a £200million stop on the Birmingham toManchester leg of the £32.7 billionHS2 rail network – slashing journeysto the capital from one hour 40minsto 58 minutes with at least two highspeed trains every hour.
A new HS2 maintenance depot inCrewe will create 300 jobs.
But Stoke-on-Trent City Counciland Staffordshire County Councilare meeting Transport SecretaryPatrick McLoughlin to call for thenew hub to be built instead betweenjunction 15 and 16 of the M6.
City council deputy leader PaulShotton said: “That will kill two birdswith one stone. It would enable HS2to be close to Crewe’s connectivity
but also unlock the benefits for NorthStaf fordshire.”
The Sentinel can reveal the citycouncil turned down the chance tosubmit a joint bid for a HS2 hub withCheshire East Council.
The Tory-run authority describedthe city’s alternative proposals as a‘non-star ter’. It said North Stafford-s h i re ’s best opportunity to benefitfrom HS2 is by pressing for an elec-trified, high speed link from Stoke-on-Trent to the new hub in Crewe.
Leader Michael Jones said: “I’vealready spoken to the Governmentand said that Crewe deserves this, but Stoke-on-Trent needs to be part ofit.”
The proposed route of HS2’s secondphase cuts through swathes ofStaf fordshire’s countryside – i n cl u d -ing villages like Swynnerton, Made-ley and Betley – but leaves residentswith no direct access to the line.
Villagers in Swynnerton are sta-ging a public meeting on Saturday inprotest at the proposal.
Stone MP Bill Cash said: “I will betaking every possible action tooppose this.”
The Government revealed yester-day that the second phase of HS2 willrun north from Birmingham on twobranches with new stations at Not-tingham, Sheffield, Leeds,Manchester Airport and Manchester
Central and pass beneath Crewe in atwo-and-a-half mile tunnel.
Some of the 250-mph trains willstop at Crewe to link HS2 to NorthWales, Liverpool and Scotland.
Home Secretary Theresa May, whovisited Crewe Station to launch thehub plans yesterday, said: “Webelieve HS2 will generate jobs, re-balance the economy and act as acatalyst for our future prosperity.”
The construction of the secondphase of HS2 should start in themiddle of the next decade, with theline open by 2032.
