28 years of experience.Over the next 25 years we found lots of triple-milled French Soaps; we found natural fiberbath accessories made by some amazing artisanal collectives; we found unique Frenchsuppliers; we even created our own soaps.

A passion for quality & honesty.Baudelaire is passionate about quality andauthenticity. We’re also passionate about the way we do business. Our products are as natural as possible. Our packaging isalways recyclable (and often recycled). Wetry to treat our employees and our supplierswith just as much respect as our customers. We volunteer in our community. We are proud of who we are and what we do.

Artisanal partners. Our artisanal partners have family owned businesses, like ours. They have a contagiouspassion for their art, their craft and their science, and great attention to detail. Through this authentic approach, the very best products are created. And some life-long friends, too!

Our story. In 1986 we set off to find unique soaps andbodycare products made by artisanal companiesall over the world. Companies owned by peoplewho are as passionate about what they do as we are. We thrashed our way across Europe, from Amsterdam to Nice—on to Florence andZurich, and we found some really interestingproducts…and we met some really interesting people, like Marcel Lavabre, author of The Aromatherapy Workbook, (published in 1990)and lover of fresh cherries.

Conserving resources. This year we switched to solar generated elec-tricity, but the energy saving program we areproudest of is our re-use of packing materials: We have a weekly route to local manufacturersgathering up packing material which we reuse. We figure we have saved an entire landfill’s worth of material in 28 years!

Natural materials.Natural materials and ingredients are sourced and re-sourced with a consciousawareness of ecological effects and anemphasis on renewables.

Traditionally-crafted.Baudelaire soaps and accessories are created with a craftsmanship that can be hard to findtoday. Our products are nurtured at eachstage; from their carefully selected ingredientsto their attractive packaging. Common to all isattention to detail and quality at every turn.

Quality&workmanship.Baudelaire soaps and accessories are manu-factured and/or sourced by small producers. In some cases handmade. In all instances, with a seriously careful attention to detail and quality.

Cultivating relationships. At Baudelaire, we love the people we work with. And we truly hope they feel the sameabout us. On the following pages we willshare some of their stories. We invite you tojoin us.

Harvesting sponges.Natural sea sponges have been used for bathing since the days of the Roman Empire. Our natural sea sponges are harvested byhand in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Sponges are cut from the ocean floor and grow back in 5–7 years.

A long Greek tradition.Back in the early 1900s some enterprising civic leaders on the gulf coast of Florida reached out torelatives in Greece for some experienced spongedivers...and the rest is history—mostly the historyof a few Greek families who dominate the indus-try to this day and have turned Tarpon Springs,Florida into the sponge capital of America.

Poseiden.Second to only Zeus in power among the gods, Poseidon was known for his tempestuous desiresand moods. His powerful trident could causeearthquakes and tidal waves. A warm bath withan all natural sea sponge might have calmed him down.Natural bath sponges.

Commonly known as “wool” sponges for their resemblance to a wooly lamb, our bathsponges are the very best bath sponges—cleaned, processed and trimmed in TarponSprings, Florida.

Silk cosmetic sponges.Gentle enough to use as a facial sponge, for removing makeup as well as cleansing delicate areas.

Loofa soaps: conceived in France, made in the USA.Loofa soap was our first adventure in manu-facturing. In 1991 we contracted with a now defunct soap factory in extreme north-eastern France to create a line of soaps withparticles of various herbs and plants inside. We later perfected our use of seaweed in soaps with the help of our friends at Labora-toire Ardecosm and Provence Santé, and today we are able to manufacture these soaps right here in the USA.

Ex·fo·li·ate: verb|to wash or rub (a part of the body) with a granular substance to remove dead cellsfrom the surface of the skin. Ageing slows theprocess of cell turnover which can make theskin feel dry and rough. Exfoliate for smootherskin and to make the skin more receptive to absorbing moisturizers.

Seaweed = exfoliation. As you use Loofa soaps, the bar melts faster than the tiny clumps of seaweed powder, whichform a wonderfully stimulating, exfoliating surface. Truly addictive, Loofa Soaps quicklybecame our single most popular brand.

North Sea.Our Loofa soaps are made with seaweed gathered from the North Sea. Four distinct fragrances: Original Sea Loofa, Loofa Mint,Loofa Spice, and Loofa Nilla.

William Morris.William Morris was known for his trendsetting designs in the spirit of the Arts and CraftsMovement, and his underlying belief that themasses deserved and needed the beauty ofdesign in their lives. We couldn’t agree more!

Moisturizing lanolin.Lanolin, derived from the wax on sheep’s wool, brings emollient qualities to soap thatprevent drying and chapping of the skin.Lanolin is capable of absorbing water in anamount equal to 50% of its weight.

Royal jelly.Produced by worker bees and fed to the larvae that will become the queen bee. The researchis ongoing as to the exact role this substanceplays in the queen’ evolution, but it is rich in vitamins and minerals believed to have skinrejuvenating qualities.

Goat’s milk.Goat’s milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid, which help remove deadskin cells from the skin. It also is very high inVitamin A and minerals and has a significantcream/fat component that helps to keep skinnaturally moisturized.

The skep. For centuries, beekeepers used “skeps” or domed straw baskets as beehives. Skeps canno longer be legally used to house bees, sincethey cannot be easily opened for inspectionand mite prevention, but many beekeepershave a nostalgic fondness for the look andfeel of a skep. Arts & crafts.

We manufacture these soaps in nearby Vermont, where the passion for arts and crafts has no limits.

Honey is hydroscopic. In other words, it attracts water.

This is why honey has been used for skin care for hundreds of years.

About honey.Honey has been used in skin care since ancienttimes because it’s naturally moisturizing andnourishing. Our honey soaps are gentle, not drying, and generate a luxurious lather. In addition to pure honey, each fragrance includes a special ingredient: mild goat’s milk, healing calendula, or nourishing royal jelly.

Handcrafted hemp mitt. The hand-woven mitts are made from recycled, vintage fabric that was woven a generation ago, when the villagers of Transylvania still produced everything theyneeded from bed linens to clothing.

Natural materials, traditionally woven. The hemp and flax were grown without pesticides on small family farms, then harvested, processed and spun by hand.

Preserving ancient Transylvanian traditions.More than 20 years ago, Cara Spinelli & Zsuzsanna Sipos, created a company to helppreserve the weaving and sewing traditions of women in Transylvania that became highlydeveloped due to the ancient custom ofdowry. As the custom of dowry disappears, so too does this rich craft tradition.

Volcanic magma.Unlike manmade pumice, which is most commonly used to stonewash jeans, naturalpumice stones are beautiful and will not clog.Usually light in color and weight, pumice isvolcanic magma rock consisting of texturedvolcanic glass. Created when super heatedrock is thrown out of a volcano, pumice is excellent for removing calluses.

Yucatan Sam.For the last 30 years or so, Samuel Jackson, aka Yucatan Sam, has been scouring the obscure beaches of Baja California for natural pumice stones, which he sorts andcleans in a top secret location before shippingthem on to us.

Pumice stones.Natural pumice stones are created in the eruption of certain Caribbean volcanoes asthe intense heat fuses the volcanic ash together. Some of these “stones” fall into the sea where they are carried by the pre-vailing currents to remote beaches known only to our friend Sam.
