In this article, historica l evidence pertain ing o self ood is reviewed. A scheme of stages is delineated,according to which the mod ern se l f and i t s uncer ta int ies have evolved. The h is tor ica l data are thenreviewed in connection with the following four m ajor pro blem s regarding the self: knowing an dconceptualizing the self; defining or crea ting the self; und erstand ing on e's poten tial and fulfil l ing it;and relating the single self o society.

autobiography, is an imp orta nt area of overlap of historical andliterary evidence about selfhood.

The inter pretation of both historical and literary evidence isnecessarily more subjective than the in terpretat ion of experi-mental findings. To prevent myself from generating the supp ortfor my own con clusions (as well as to p revent mysel f from mak-ing judgments I am not qualified to make), I shall rely exclu-sively on the work o f historians and litera ry scholars, inst ead ofon direct in terpretation of evidence.

One danger of any review article is that the co nclusions canbe no more valid than the evidence surveyed, and perhaps this isespecially true of an interdiscipl inaryreview article. The readermust be doubly cautious of my psychological conclusions basedon historical evidence, first because they are limited by thesoundness of current historical research, and second becausethey are made by a psychologist rather than a historian. I haveproceeded with this pro ject despite these risks because the on lyapparent alternative is to ignore the research in other disci-plines, which carries the opposite risk of depriving personalityand social psychology of potentially valuable info rmati on andperspectives.

Needless to say, the generalizations in this article pertain togeneral trends rather th an to universal patterns. The purpose isto underst and the sequential development of problems o f self-hood, not to formulate strict or rigid classification of personsby historical eras. Moreover, the research reviewed herein fo-cuses on America, England, and France. Other European cou n-tries may have passed through similar stages at different times,but again, what is impor tant is the developmental sequence, notthe precise dates. My origin al intent ion was to restrict my re-search to Ame rican history. However, the recency of Americanhistory necessitated some reliance on data from Western Eu-rope, especially England. The historical roots of Ame rican civi-lization would seem to justify this use. For present purposes,the most impo rtan t divergence between English and Americanpatterns was the differential timi ng of the in fluence of Puritan-ism, which flourished in America only after its defeat in En-gland.
