Baumit External Wall Insulation SystemsIntroduction

1. IntroductionIn times of rising energy prices and increased environmental awareness, it is impossible to imagine a world without external wall insulation systems: they are the most eff ective measure for reducing heating costs and improving comfort in homes. The fi rst step is therefore to renovate and insulate the buil-ding shell and only afterwards to adapt the heating system to the new and improved conditions. Generally it is possible to downgrade to a smaller heating system that is less expen-sive. External wall insulation systems not only reduce the use of heating energy over the long term, they also off er benefi ts in the purchasing of heating systems.

The fi rst external wall insulation system was installed in 1957 in Berlin. The use of external wall insulation systems began to expand as of the mid-sixties. At this time, the insulation pio-neers among building developers were doing their best with up to fi ve centimetres of insulation. Since then, however, the

insulation performance of the materials and the thicknesses have constantly increased. What was state-of-the-art just a few years ago can already be signifi cantly improved upon today. Five centimetres of insulation are no longer suffi cient. Energy prices are continuously rising as resources become increasingly scarce. This makes suffi cient thermal insulation the most important and fi rst measure taken to give a buil-ding high energy effi ciency. The building shell is absolutely the most important component: only after the heat losses through the uninsulated façade have been minimised can the heating be optimally adapted to the improved situation.

A summary of the most important standards, tips and sug-gestions as well as a concise overview of the Baumit External Wall Insulation Systems can be found below, supplemented with 28 tables and illustrated with 42 diagrams.

External wall insulation systems connect to a number of diff erent building components. The Baumit selection of EWIS accessories off ers the right solution in every case for greater reliability and value retention.

2. PrinciplesThese installation instructions explain how to work with Baumit External Wall Insulation Systems on vertical surfaces and sur-faces that are not subject to direct weathering (e.g. undersides).

Since 1 May 1993, external wall insulation systems must be certified with the CE mark. One requirement for such certifica-tion is a European Technical Approval (ETA) based on ETAG 004 (Guideline for European technical approval of external thermal insulation composite systems with rendering) or on the basis of a special CUAP (guideline for creation of European Technical Approvals in individual cases).

The ETA contains information and remarks concerning the in-tended use, the product features and the procedures used to verify these as well as concerning the individual components of the system. In addition, every manufacturer must perform internal production controls for quality assurance according

to defined inspection plans and compliance with these requi-rements is continuously monitored by notified bodies (accre-dited for such inspections within the EU).

Apart from the system inspections according to ÖNORM B 6110 (EWIS with insulation material EPS-F) and ÖNORM B 6135 (EWIS with insulation material MW-PT), in which the test certificates are used as evidence, a conformity declaration of the manufacturer is then required that verifies proper labelling and compliance of the EWIS with the applicable guidelines. An ETA serves only for presentation to the certification autho-rity.

If the above approvals have been granted and the internal production controls satisfy the specified guidelines of the ETA, the CE mark may then be applied as visible proof that the product has been certified as suitable for use. With the conformity declaration, the company confirms on one hand the proper handling of the CE mark and, on the other, that the requirements have been fulfilled for applying a CE mark to the system components and/or accompanying documentation with the number assigned by the certification authority. The CE marking regulates only the free trade of goods within the European Union and is not a quality mark. For Austria, com-pliance with the minimum requirements of ÖNORM B 6400 is mandatory. The requirements on the installation itself are defined by processing guidelines and national regulations.

All Baumit External Wall Insulation Systems have a Euro-pean Technical Approval according to the European regulati-ons (ETAG, CUAP) and are CE-certified.

Our Baumit External Wall Insulation Systems are tested as a system and the individual components are adapted to each other. The systems include special accessory parts (e.g. Bau-mit Base Profile therm, Baumit Window Connection Profi-les, Baumit Edge Protectors, etc.) for connecting to adjacent building components (openings, corners, balustrades, etc.) in accordance with ETAG 004 and ÖNORM B 6410.

This ensures reliable installation and guarantees lasting qua-lity. 100% Baumit system = 100% dependable.

2.2. Dimensional TolerancesThe requirements of ÖNORM DIN 18202 and ÖNORM B 2259 concerning the evenness of surfaces in connection with EWIS must be complied with.

Unfinished walls:Substrates that are suitable for the installation of EWIS must exhibit evenness that satisfies the following ÖNORM standard.ÖNORM DIN 18202 specifies limits for evenness deviations in Table 3, Line 5. The specific values can also be found here in Table 1.

Finished walls:In accordance with ÖNORM B 2259, the surface of an EWIS “without special agreement” must satisfy the evenness tolerances according to ÖNORM DIN 18202, Table 3, Columns 2, 3 and 4 of Line 7, referred to there as “increased requirements”. The speci-fic values can be found here in Table 2.For surfaces with special requirements, however, the specifications of Table 1 of ÖNORM B 2259 must be met. The specific values can be found here in Table 3.

The listed dimensional tolerances also apply to the straightness of edges and inner corners.

2.3. Worker QualificationsThe quality and durability of an EWIS depends heavily on the qualifications of the installing workers and thereby the quality of the work. For this purpose, Baumit holds annual training sessions on new products and features and also organises special seminars on this topic.

With regard to the qualifications for installing EWIS required in the Technical Specifications for Construction published by the Aus-trian Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth, training as a “certified EWIS expert” based upon the relevant requirements is offered by the Quality Group Thermal Insulation Systems in cooperation with the Austrian Building Academies as well as Wien-ZERT, the certification body of the state of Vienna.Graduates of this training meet the relevant criteria:1. 2.4. Design PrerequisitesAn EWIS must already be taken into conside-ration during the planning of a building. This includes, above all, careful and comprehensive planning of details.

The installation of the EWIS may only begin if: All installations in the substrate have been installed and the resulting openings have been carefully sealed. It is not permitted to install anything into the EWIS, with the excepti-on of necessary penetrations (e.g. cables to exterior lights).

All joints and slits in the substrate have been carefully sealed.

All surfaces that will not be coated, such as glass, wood, aluminium, window ledges, border paving, etc. have been protected by appropriate coverings.

The substrate exhibits no visible areas of moisture penet-ration.

The causes for arising moisture, salt blooms and the like have been eliminated and the masonry has dried sufficiently.

Interior plaster and screed have been installed and are mostly dry. Ensure sufficient ventilation.

All horizontal surfaces, such as parapets, coping, cornices, etc. have been provided with suitable coverings to prevent any moisture collecting behind the EWIS during and after the installation.

The level and position of the top edge of the finished ground or paving has been determined.

Clear execution instructions exist for all connections, termi-nations and detail work.

Penetrations have been planned such as to ensure connec-tions and terminations that will offer a lasting seal against driving rain.

The substrate has been inspected for suitability and any necessary measures in this regard have been taken.

No additives (frost protectant or the like) that are not part of the original system may be added to any Baumit products.

2.5. Installation Temperature and Weather ConditionsDuring the entire installation, drying and curing phase, the ambient, substrate and material tem-peratures must be at least +5 °C.

For Baumit NanoporTop, openTop and SilikatTop, at least +8 °C is required.

Unfavourable weather conditions, such as temperatures above +30 °C, wind and direct sunlight can also alter the installation properties. In such cases, additional measures must be ta-ken, such as shading with appropriate scaffolding netting (mi-nimum quality: weight ≥ 60 g/m² and shading value ≥ 30%, UV-stabilised).

It must further be ensured that only cold water of drinking wa-ter quality (or additive water acc. to ÖNORM EN 1008) is used. In summer, for instance, no water heated up in a water hose may be used. In spring and autumn, temperature-controlled water (max. 30 °C) is permitted.

The weather conditions (e.g. rain or fog) must not have a nega-tive influence on the drying and curing.

2.6. StorageThe individual Baumit system components must be checked upon delivery to ensure that they belong to the correct system. In addition, all Baumit system components must be stored on a dry surface.During storage, the products must be protected against the following:

– Water, moisture, frost, snow – Direct sunlight – Mechanical damage – Dirt or other contamination

2.7. ConnectionsAll connections to other components, such as windows and doors, rafters, purlins, furring, metal window sills and compo-nents penetrating through the insulation layer (e.g. lightning protection systems, rain pipes, switch boxes, etc. and their fastening parts) must be executed with a proper seal against driving rain. This is achieved through use of the following pro-ducts:

� Baumit Window Connection Profiles� Baumit Joint Sealing Band� Baumit Sheet Connection Profile� Baumit Roller Shutter Connection Profile

Terminations must be executed accordingly. The design and execution of all necessary connection details must be clarified before work begins. All components must be sufficiently ins-talled such that clean and water-tight attachments are possi-ble. This applies in particular to sub-frames, steel frames and metal constructions as well as various glazing and sheeting elements.

2.8. Impact ResistanceAccording to ÖNORM B 6400, only external wall insulation systems of categories I and II may be used in Austria. Category I is to be used for easily accessible, unprotected areas near to the ground that are exposed to impacts with hard bodies wi-thout protection but are not subject to any abnormally heavy wear. Category II is to be used for all other areas.

All Baumit External Wall Insulation Systems satisfy the requirements of at least category II.

2.9. Lightness CoefficientThe lightness coefficient of the finishing coat must be at least 25 in accordance with ÖNORM B 6400. This also applies to additional coatings (e.g. paint coats).

The lightness coefficient specifies how much light is reflected from a surface, such as render. The higher this value, the brighter the surface. A lightness coefficient of 100 corresponds to white, 0 corresponds to black.

4. PlanningBefore starting work on an EWIS, all basic prerequisites must be met and all work steps, including connections and termi-nations, must be carefully planned by the project planner. Planning aids (detailed drawings, tender texts, product data sheets, etc.) can be found at www.baumit.com.

This applies both to new buildings and renovation work. The following points must also be observed when performing ther-mal renovations on existing buildings:

� Adjoining componentsWhen planning the doubling up of insulation, adjoining components, such as sheeting (parapet sheeting, window ledges, etc.) or seals (areas exposed to splashing water), must be taken into consideration and adapted for the new-ly installed EWIS.

� Planning documents, old photos, detailed drawingsDuring planning and execution, it is helpful if old planning documents and documents pertaining to building laws are available. These simplify the process of assessing the cur-rent conditions and help in making correct decisions.

In addition to statutory requirements, documentation of tech-nical conditions must also be maintained:

4.1. Property Borders, Building RegulationsThermal renovation work alters the geometry of a building. The corresponding regional building ordinances and regulations must be complied with.

4.2. Building PhysicsOptimisation of the external shell of a building with a Baumit External Wall Insulation System increases comfort and qua-lity of life through the reduction of heating energy costs. CO2 emissions are also reduced, making an important contribu-tion to climate protection. To ensure the functionality of the Baumit EWIS, a thorough evaluation of the relevant building physics is required. This includes:

� Calculation of the U-value in accordance with the building regulations

� Thermal bridges should be eliminated as much as possible during the renovation.

� Location of the dew point / condensation� The optimal insulation thickness is calculated based on

these factors.� The creation of an energy pass is recommended for opti-

misation of the measures and for any available subsidies.

Connections of the EWIS are no substitute for the measures required according to ÖNORM B 5320 for compliance with the requirements for a sealing building joints against driving rain and wind and therefore do not represent rain-tight and wind-tight connections to the building structure.

4.3. Fire ProtectionThe requirements for fire protection must be defined by the planner in coordination with the competent building authority. The applicable regulatory standard is ÖNORM B 3806.

Building classesIn the course of harmonising the Austrian building regulati-ons, the following building classes were defined with regard to fire protection:

Building class 1; GK 1This encompasses free-standing buildings accessible for fire-fighting from the outside on at least three sides on their own property or a public thoroughfare that have no more than three above-ground floors with an occupation height of no more than 7 m as well as individual dwelling and/or operatio-nal units that do not exceed a footprint of 400 m² each.

Building class 2; GK 2This encompasses buildings with no more than three above-ground floors and an occupation height of no more than 7 m and a maximum of 3 dwelling and/or operational units with a total footprint that does not exceed 400 m²; also terrace hou-ses with no more than three above-ground floors and an occu-pation height of no more than 7 m and dwelling and/or opera-tional units with a footprint that does not exceed 400 m².

Building class 3; GK 3This encompasses buildings with no more than three above-ground floors and an occupation height of no more than 7 m that do not fall into building classes 1 or 2.

Building class 4; GK 4This encompasses buildings with no more than four above-ground floors and an occupation height of no more than 11 m and only one operational unit without restriction to footprint size or multiple dwelling or operational units with footprints that do not exceed 400 m² each.

Building class 5; GK 5This encompasses buildings with an occupation height of no more than 22 m that do not fall into building classes 1, 2, 3 or 4 as well as buildings that consist primarily of underground floors.

High-riseThese are buildings with an occupation height of greater than 22 m.

The execution of fire protection beams depends on the type and number of floors, the insulation thickness, the location of the window and any stipulations of the building authority and must be specified by the planner. In accordance with ÖNORM B 3806, a fire protection beam or fire protection band must be installed as of building category 4 and an insulation thickness > 10 cm with the use of insulation materials of classes C, D or E (e.g. EPS-F class E).

The type and location of the fire protection beam must be spe-cified by the planner.

Note:When securing the Baumit Lamella Board with anchors, the Baumit Anchor Disc 140 must always also be used (Fi-gure 23). In addition, a 2 cm thick EPS strip can be applied to the offset Baumit Lamella Boards in order to ensure a uniform substrate during application of the undercoat ren-der.

4.4. Additional Mechanical FasteningAny necessary additional mechanical fastening of the EWIS must be planned before the start of the work.

The Quality Group Thermal Insulation Systems offers an aid for preliminary structural dimensi-oning at www.waermedaemmsysteme.at

In principle, all Baumit EWIS require mechanical fastening in addition to adhesive bonding.

For the following like-new substrates, the exclusive use of adhesive bonding is permitted for insulation materials of pro-duct types EPS-F and MW-PT 80 (vertical fibres) if the system weight does not exceed 30 kg/m²:

- Bricks and vertically perforated bricks acc. to ÖNORM B 3200

- Hollow and solid blocks acc. to ÖNORM EN 771-3 and 771-5- Breeze blocks acc. to ÖNORM EN 15435- Shuttering concrete of cementitious wood-chip shutte-

ring blocks without integrated additional insulation acc. to ÖNORM EN 15498 and cementitious wood-chip insulation panels WS and WSD acc. to ÖNORM B 6022.

Other substrates, such as shuttering panels of product type WWD acc. to ÖNORM B 6000 and masonry of aerated concrete blocks acc. to ÖNORM EN 771-4, are also excepted from this in event of appropriate verification according to ÖNORM B 6400, Appendix A.

4.4.1. Number of Baumit Bonding Anchors and Baumit System Anchors

The following factors must be considered in determining this:

- Selected Baumit External Wall Insulation System (weight per m², insulation material, system class)

- Type and number of additional mechanical fastening, Baumit Bonding Anchors or Baumit System Anchors

- Base wind speed of the location acc. to ÖNORM B 1991-1-4- Terrain categories according to ÖNORM B 1991-1-4

Terrain category II: Areas with low vegetation, such as grass, and isolated obstructions (trees, buildings) spaced at distances equal to at least 20 times the obstruction height.Terrain category III: Areas with uniform vegetation or de-velopment or with isolated objects spaced at distances less than 20 times the obstruction height (e.g. villages, suburban development, forested regions)Terrain category IV: Areas, in which at least 15% of the surface is developed with buildings having an average height of 15 m. The terrain categories 0 (seas, coastal regions subject to the open sea) and I (lakes or regions with low vegetation and no obstructions) do not exist in Austria according to ÖNORM B 1991-1-4.

4.5. Detailed PlanningExpansion and movement jointsExpansion and movement joints existing in the structure must be taken up accordingly and also executed as such within the newly installed EWIS. At vertical and horizontal transitions from solid construction to lightweight construction, the appro-priate Baumit Connection Profiles must be installed.

If the window area is greater than 10 m² or the insulation thick-ness greater than 30 cm, a building-specific solution must be identified in consultation with your Baumit technical advisor.Connections to window shapes and dimensions not listed in Ta-ble 8 must therefore be planned on a building-specific basis. 4.6. Substrate

With these substrates, the installer can assume that they were produced according to the accepted technical practices and are therefore fundamentally suitable for the installation of the insulation panels. Nevertheless, the installer must still satisfy themself that the existing condition of the substrate is ade-quate before beginning work. Simple methods typical in the industry are described in Section 5.1, as of page 18.

4.6.2. Wood Substrates and Lightweight Building BoardsThe following wood substrates and substrates of lightweight building board are suitable for the installation of an EWIS:– Engineered wood boards for outdoor use acc. to ÖNORM EN

13986:2005-04, except for porous boards acc. to ÖNORM EN 13986:2005-04, Section 3.7.3,

– Other wood-based materials or panel materials (e.g. gyp-sum fibreboards) acc. to verification of suitability.

In all cases, these substrates must be mechanically fastened with Baumit HolzDübel Speed in addition to adhesive bon-ding.

4.6.4. Other Substrates (Not Like-New, Rendered Substrates)

The type of substrate (e.g. masonry, concrete, lightweight con-struction materials) must be specified as the basis for evalu-ating the suitability. In addition, any necessary preparation measures must be de-fined.

5.1. InspectionsAn on-site assessment is a necessary first step to allow for correct evaluation of the substrate condition. The following generally applicable inspections of the substrate suitability must be performed.

– A visual inspection serves for evaluating the type and cha-racter of the substrate, in particular the substrate dampness and the risk of moisture collecting behind the EWIS as well as and for identifying cracks in the substrate.

– Wipe test with an open palm or a dark cloth to check for the absence of dust, harmful blooms or chalk production by previous coatings.

– Scratch or crack test with a hard, pointed object to verify the strength and carrying capacity (e.g. cross cut test).

– Wetting test with a paint brush or spray bottle to check the

absorbency and moisture level of the substrate.– Evenness test acc. to ÖNORM DIN 18202 (see Table 1 Ex-

cerpt from ÖNORM DIN 18202, Table 3, Line 5: limits for evenness deviations).

– Tear-off test: On coated substrates, a Baumit Fibreglass Mesh of at least 30 cm x 30 cm must be rendered on using the adhesive of the given system with a layer of at least 5 mm and protected against drying out (e.g. with construction foil). Upon tearing off at least 5 days later, only the reinforce-ment may be separated from the undercoat render.

Perform these tests as spot checks at multiple locations on every face of the façade.

5.3. Building Base and Areas Exposed to Water Spray and SoilIn principle, the bottom termination of the EWIS falls into the following categories:

- Water spray area This must be created up to approx. 30 cm above the finished

terrain level

- Soil contact area This applies to all surfaces below the terrain level and is also

referred to as the perimeter area. The thermal insulation of component surfaces in contact with soil is referred to as pe-rimeter insulation. It is characteristic of perimeter insulation that the insulation on the outside of the building component (e.g. basement wall) is situated outside of the structure seal.

- Base This is an architectural design element that can be execut-

ed independently of the overlying façade area. The base can project out, recess in or be flush with the façade with only visual differentiation.

In the base area and areas exposed to water spray and soil, Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP should be used (acc. to ÖNORM B 6000, insulation boards of type EPS-P can also be used).

Standing installation of the installation boards is permitted in the water spray / perimeter area.

The installation must be performed as follows:

- Bonding of the Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP using the border bead and dot method with Baumit BituFix 2K (at least 40% bonding surface). On even substrates, Baumit Super Bonder can also be applied to the full surface with a toothed trowel (approx. 10 mm teeth).

- The insulation boards are anchored into the supporting sub-strate at least 30 cm above the terrain level with Baumit Screw Anchors Speed or Baumit Universal Anchors STR U (at least 3 anchors/linear metre or 2 anchors/board).

- Anchoring of the insulation boards takes place before setting of the bonding adhesive (generally while still fresh).

If the EWIS is run below the terrain surface in the base area of the building, it must be protected against moisture and mechanical damage in this area with an additional seal of Baumit Base Protector Flexible and dimpled sheeting.

Before starting the work, the level of the fini-shed terrain or top edge of the covering must be determined by the planner/developer so that the outer sealing of the EWIS terminates with the terrain and is therefore not visible.

Termination without perimeter insulationThe Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP integrated into the soil are cut on the bottom at an angle and covered with the reinforced undercoat render. The reinforced undercoat render must be applied down to the substrate, the topcoat render to approx. 10 cm below the terrain. Baumit Base Protector Flexible must be applied over the entire system in contact with soil down to the substrate.

Termination with perimeter insulationFor varying thicknesses between the Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP and the existing perimeter insulation, these must be evened out with an angled cut. The render system on the Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP is applied down to the angle-cut edge and terminates there. Baumit Base Pro-tector Flexible is applied over approx. 10 cm down to the pe-rimeter insulation boards, which are pretreated, if necessary.

5.3.1. Creation of a BaseRecessed baseA recessed base can be created using the following products:

If no Base Profile is used, this detail can also be created with the Baumit Drip Edge Profile. In this case, however, it is im-portant that the render system is also executed with precision on the underside as well.If the bottom termination of the Baumit External Wall Insula-tion System is to be executed without base insulation and no base profile is used, it is also possible to do as follows:

- First apply the fibreglass mesh with bonding adhesive to the substrate in the area of the lower termination (at least 15 cm in bed of adhesive)

- Install the insulation boards (below a height of 30 cm, Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP must also be used here!)

- Also apply the undercoat render to the bottom edge of the insulation material down to the substrate

- Integrate the previously applied fibreglass mesh; ensure ap-propriate overlapping with the fibreglass mesh in this area.

IMPORTANT: The uninsulated base represents a thermal bridge!

Projecting baseWith this type of execution, metal sheeting must be applied to the appropriate area of the building as protection for the Bau-mit External Wall Insulation System. The method of fastening and manner of execution for the metal sheeting must be clari-fied with the sheeting installer before the start of the work.

Flush baseWith a flush base, the Baumit Base Insulation Board XPS TOP is installed with gap-free butt joints in the same insulati-on thickness as the façade insulation boards. The undercoat render is applied over both types of insulation boards. The vi-sual differentiation of the base, if desired, takes place solely in the topcoat render by means of different colour tones and/or textures.

5.3.2. Installation of the Baumit Base ProfilesThe Baumit Base Profile therm and the Baumit Base Profile are fastened with a spacing of approx. 30 cm using the Bau-mit Installation Set. This contains

If the Baumit Base Insertion Profile therm is used, do as follows:

- The horizontal bar is inserted between the Baumit Façade Insulation Board and the Baumit Base Insulation Board XPS TOP such that it sits firmly in place

- The maximum projection distance is 50 mm

In all variants, the driving-rain-proof connection between the Baumit Base Insulation Board XPS TOP and the Base Profi-les is created by means of the Baumit Window Connection Profile Plus or Baumit Joint Sealing Band 15/2-6.

5.4. Installation of Window and Door Connection ProfilesBefore fastening, a bonding test must be performed in order to determine whether the substrate is suitable for the bon-ding. Connection profiles and sealing bands must terminate at the front edge of the insulation board.Before starting the work, clarify with the project management or window installer that the windows and doors were installed in accordance with ÖNORM B 5320 (Connection joints for windows, french doors and doors in external construction ele-ments – Principles for design and execution of work).

On the Baumit Joint Sealing Bands the leading strips and the first 3 cm of the joint sealing band must be cut off. Pull off the protective film and tape the Baumit Joint Sealing Band di-rectly from the roll onto the connection part such that the joint sealing band is inset approx. 3 mm from the insulation ma-terial surface. Cut sections must be joined in butt joints and may not be run around the corner. The surface reinforcement must be applied over the joint sealing band. In the area of the connection part, make a trowel cut into the still plastic mortar. Baumit Joint Sealing Bands may not be installed with ten-sion (connection length + 2%). Baumit Joint Sealing Bands that are already decompressed may no longer be used.

For the Baumit Window Connection Profiles, pull the protec-tive film off the adhesive tape in order to fasten the profiles as free of joints as possible. If vertical joints are necessary (win-dow height > 2.4 m), these must be situated in the upper third (minimum length 25 cm). In the corner area, the profiles must be installed with butt joints; the shorter profile butts against the longer profile. These joints must be filled with a UV-resis-tant sealing compound (e.g. Murexin Joint Compound PU 15).

5.5. Fastening of the Baumit EWIS

5.5.1. Baumit Bonding AnchorsThe Baumit Bonding Anchor represents an innovative, ther-mal-bridge-free alternative to conventional EWIS anchors. It enables additional mechanical fastening without penetrating the Façade Insulation Boards in the systems Baumit open – The Climate Façade and Baumit External Wall Insulation Sys-tem EPS on all supporting substrates that require additional mechanical fastening.Thanks to the direct installation into the substrate, the relia-bility of the installation can be easily checked with little effort.

� Baumit Bonding Anchors Orange: Concrete, solid bricks, vertically perforated bricks, aerated concrete (non-sup-porting layer max. 40 mm)

� Baumit Bonding Anchor 55: Concrete (without non-sup-porting layers, such as old renders, etc.)

The grid is marked out using a chalk line. Alternatively, the Baumit Anchor Plumb Line can also be used. To use this, slide the eye onto the drill. With its 40 cm length, it will then always indicate the correct spacing from the previous Baumit Bonding Anchor.

Use a drill bit with ∅ 8 mm for the drilling. Percussion drills or hammer drills may only be used on solid building materi-als. The driving depths for the drill hole are determined by the shaft length of the respective Baumit Bonding Anchor plus 10-15 mm.

The Baumit Bonding Anchors must be installed in the sup-porting substrate.

After drilling the hole and clearing out the drilling dust, insert the Baumit Bonding Anchor until it is flush with the surface and pound in the nail with a hammer (Figure 14) or drive it in with a screwdriver bit on a power drill (Figure 15).

ted (in a continuous mixer with constant addition of water; re-mixing with a stirring tool is required). The mixing water may be at most lukewarm. After a resting period of about 5 minutes, the compound must be stirred again. Material that has alrea-dy stiffened may no longer be used. Never attempt to make it “fresh” again with water. No addition of any additives not included as part of the system (e.g. frost protectant, quick bin-ding agents) is permitted.

5.6.3. Adhesive Application with Baumit Bonding AnchorsMix the adhesive (Baumit open Bonding Filler W, Baumit Bonding Filler) as described in Section 5.6.1 and apply it. Apply it to the insulation board using the border bead and dot method. Before bonding the insulation boards, throw blobs of adhesive about 20 cm thick onto the installed Baumit Bon-ding Anchors using a trowel (Figure 16). Then install the insu-lation board with a slightly sliding motion (see Section 5.7.1).

Note:Because the insulation boards must be installed “wet in wet” in the adhesive bed, it is important that the blobs of adhesive are applied to the Baumit Bonding Anchors im-mediately before bonding the insulation board.

5.6.4. Adhesive Application with the Border Bead and Dot MethodThis method of adhesive application is suitable for all types of fastening.The quantity of adhesive applied must be selected such that a contact surface with the substrate of at least 40% results, in consideration of the adhesive layer thickness (approx. 1 to 2 cm). Apply a line approximately 5 cm wide around the edge of the board (border bead) and three roughly palm-sized blobs of adhesive in the middle of the board (Figure 17). Uneven areas in the substrate up to max. 10 mm can be evened out in the adhesive bed at this time.

5.6.5. Adhesive Application with the Border Bead and Bead MethodThis method of adhesive application is suitable for all types of fastening.The quantity of adhesive applied must be selected such that a contact surface with the substrate of at least 60% results, in consideration of the adhesive layer thickness (approx. 1 to 2 cm). Apply a line approximately 10 cm wide around the edge of the board (border bead) and three roughly 10 cm wide lines in the middle of the board. Uneven areas in the substrate up to max. 10 mm can be evened out in the adhesive bed at this time.

5.6.6. Full-Surface Adhesive ApplicationThis method of adhesive application is suitable for pure bon-ding as well as bonding with additional anchoring.

On even substrates, the adhesive can be applied over the full surface with a rust-free toothed trowel (toothing at least 10 mm, depending on substrate). The adhesive must be applied to the insulation board. Uneven areas in the substrate up to max. 5 mm can be evened out in the adhesive bed at this time.

When applying the adhesive, always ensure that:- No air can circulate between the insulation board and the

substrate- The board is held evenly to the substrate over its entire sur-

face (otherwise a pillow or mattress effect sets in). In addition, the adhesive must be applied up to the board edge in all adhesive application methods.

5.7. Installing the Insulation BoardsMix the adhesive according to Section 5.6.1 and apply it using one of the adhesive application methods described above. Then install the insulation boards with a slightly sliding motion (Figure 19).

To prevent skin forming on the adhesive, ensure that the ad-hesive is applied immediately before bonding of the insulation board.Only install entire insulation boards, proceeding from bot-tom to top, butting them flush against each other in a stret-cher bond. The use of scrap pieces (minimum width 15 cm) is permitted, but they may only be distributed throughout the surface in isolated fashion and may not be used at building corners and openings (e.g. windows and doors).It is important to ensure that the insulation boards are ins-talled in a level and even fashion. Gaps should be avoided.

In corner areas of masonry openings (e.g. win-dows, doors), it is recommended that the in-sulation boards be cut with a “boot cut” where possible. Fire protection beams can be excep-tions to this.

Closing gaps with bonding mortar or undercoat render is not permitted. Always ensure that cuts are made at the correct ang-le. The use of insulation-cutting power tools is recommended! In the event of gaps resulting from changes of material in the sub-strate and butt joints at masonry connections, ensure that the insulation boards overlap these gaps by at least 10 cm.

Note: When fastening components installed in or to the wall, such as awnings, parapet and balustrade elements, light-ning protection systems, rain pipes, signs, mail boxes, sun blinds, etc., thermal decoupling from the supporting subs-trate must be planned and executed. Lightning arrestors as well as electrical and other supply and drainage lines must be planned outside of the EWIS or within the wall material. Cutting slots into the insulation material is not permitted.

When installing the insulation boards above the window lintel, aids can be used to prevent the insulation boards from sliding down before the adhesive sets.

5.7.1. Two-Layer InstallationFor high insulation thicknesses, it is also possible to install the insulation boards in two layers. In principle, this method re-quires a physical analysis and verification that the insulation boards are suitable for this type of installation (location of the dew point not in the bonding layer). In general, the separation between the two layers should be situated in the middle of the total insulation thickness. Bond the first layer of the façade insulation boards as described in Section 5.6. Install the second layer with full-surface bonding and with the joints offset from the first layer of façade insulation boards.

For insulation materials of the product type EPS-F, any ne-cessary anchoring takes place in the first layer; for all other insulation materials, the anchoring takes place through both layers.

5.7.2. Window and Door RevealsWhen insulating window and door reveals, the insulation boards on the façade surface must extend at least far enough over the bare shell of the reveal that the insulation boards can be adapted flush to the reveal (after setting of the adhesive).

5.7.3. Projecting PartsIf roller shutters or the like project out from the substrate, the-se must be bridged over without joints in the insulation board. The insulation thickness in these areas must be at least 3 cm.

5.7.4. Building EdgesThe building edges must be executed in an interlocking fa-shion with respect to the board width (Figure 21). Whole and half boards must be installed in alternation such that the half boards always butt flush against the whole boards.

5.8. Anchoring the Insulation Boards

5.8.1. Selecting the AnchorsThe anchors used must meet the following requirements:

- Approved for the respective system- Satisfy ÖNORM B 6124- Approved for the corresponding wall materials according to

the following usage categories:

- A Use in normal concrete - B Use in solid brick - C Use in hollow or perforated brick - D Use in no-fines lightweight concrete - E Use in aerated concrete

If the existing substrate cannot be clearly assigned to one of the categories A, B or C according to ÖNORM B 6124, the an-chor extraction test in accordance with ÖNORM B 6124 must be performed at the construction site.

The following factors must be taken into account in selecting the anchors and determining the anchor length:

- Type and thickness of the insulation material- Wall material (supporting substrate)- Existing old render- Existing EWIS including adhesive and undercoat and topcoat render- Any other non-supporting layers- Anchoring depth of the anchor

For shuttering concrete panels and shuttering concrete blocks, the anchoring must take place within the core concrete.

5.8.3. Drilling the Anchor HolesAfter sufficient hardening of the adhesive, drilling of the anchor holes can begin. The nominal diameter of the drill bit must match the nominal diameter of the anchor shaft. Percussion drills or hammer drills may only be used on normal concrete or solid bricks. Mineral-wool boards must be penetrated with drill bits that are not spinning. The driving depth must be set for the hole depth (anchor length + 10 to 15 mm).

5.8.4. Installing the AnchorsThe anchors must be installed such that their surfaces are flush with the insulation material; exceptions from this are anchors that are intended for countersunk installation. Any buckled anchors or anchors that do not appear to be firmly set must be removed. A new anchor must be installed next to this. Holes in insulation boards resulting from drilling or the removal of installed anchors must be sealed with insulation material. Baumit Filling Foam B1 is also permitted up to a diameter of 12 mm.It must be ensured that sufficient adhesive is present under the insulation board in the area of the installed anchor.

5.8.5. Anchor ArrangementsDepending on the type of insulation material, specific arrangements must be used for anchoring of the insulation boards. For insu-lation boards of the product types polystyrene (EPS-F) and mineral wool (MW-PT5, MW-PT10), the following arrangements apply:

5.10. Window Sill ConnectionWindow sills can be differentiated according to the following criteria. The most frequent types are listed below: Differentiation based on materials used - Aluminium (anodised, powder-coated), factory-fabricated - Sheet steel (powder-coated), factory-fabricated - Galvanised sheet steel / copper, installation by a sheet metal installer (important: in deviation from these installa-

tion instructions, ÖNORM B 2221 specifies an inclination of at least 3° and a projection of at least 3 cm for these window sills)

- Natural stone / artificial stone Differentiation based on movement / expansion compensation (only for metallic window sills)

- Movement compensation in the sealant joint between reveal and vertical extension of the window sill (only for subse-quent installation)

- Movement compensation in window sill either through floating bearings that are integrated into the area of the shelf profile or through side components installed in advance, whereby the window sill is inserted subsequently.

Differentiation based on installation situation - Installation during installation of the EWIS, i.e. “rendered-in window sill”, whereby the window sill must be installed

in advance. In this case, movements must be compensated for in the window sill (see above) - Subsequent installation of the window sill, after installation of the EWIS

Subsequently installed window sill

- As the first water-transporting level, the window sill repre-sents initial protection against weathering and mechanical influences.

- In the area of the window sill, the render system is executed as a “sealed trough“ (2nd water-transporting level) with Bau-mit Base Protector Flexible.

- Baumit Base Protector Flexible is also run up the side in the water spray area of the reveal.

- A suitable adhesive (e.g. Murexin MS-K 88 Express) is used for bonding in the form of strips running along the direction of incline.

In this case, the window sill forms the water-transporting level. The window sill must be installed such that no condensation arises on its underside and such that no moisture can penet-rate inwards.The window sill must be connected to the window frame such that no water can penetrate inwards.

5.11. Roof ConnectionIn connecting the EWIS to the roof, one makes the following differentiations:

- Back-ventilated cold roof (Baumit Roof Connection Profile)- Direct roof connection, e.g. warm roof (Baumit Joint Sealing

Band)- Flat roof / parapet (Baumit Window Connection Profile Plus / Baumit Joint Sealing Band)

5.11.1. Installation of the Topmost Row of Insulation BoardsIn the connection area to the roof undersides (warm roof), the following procedure is recommended:

- Check the evenness and the existing building materials (ma-sonry, roof lattice, purlin supports, etc.). If not sufficiently even, prepare the substrate accordingly (see Section 3).

- Apply the Baumit Joint Sealing Bands or Baumit Window Connection Profiles to the underside (for substrate require-ments, see Section 5.4).

- Install the topmost insulation board row; the top edge must be adapted to the incline of the roof structure (boarding). The insulation boards must be installed around the rafters with sufficient tolerance (warping of the rafters).

- Execute the bonding in this area according to Table 17- Only afterwards, do the full-surface installation of the next-

to-last row of insulation boards

Note: For full-surface bonding, apply the bonding mortar vertically to the board with a toothed trowel (toothing at least 10 mm, de-pending on substrate) in a first step. In the second step, apply the bonding mortar horizontally to the bonding substrate using the toothed trowel. Then press the insulation board into position with a sliding motion and with sufficient force. These measures do not eliminate the need for a sufficiently air-tight seal of the exterior masonry and components integrated into this (doors, windows, pur-lin supports, etc.).

For direct roof connections (warm roof), the insulation boards must be installed such as to minimise the size of any cavity spaces.

These Baumit undercoat renders must be mixed with pure wa-ter of drinking water quality (or additive water acc. to ÖNORM EN 1008). In summer, no water heated up in a water hose may be used. In spring and autumn, temperature-controlled water is permitted.

Baumit Fibre Filler must be stirred up before use; to adjust the consistency, small quantities of pure drinking water (or ad-ditive water acc. to ÖNORM EN 1008) may be added.

5.12.2. Reinforcement of the Reveals, Edges and Interior Corners

Reinforcements and profiles (Baumit Window Connection Profiles, Baumit Edge Protectors) must be executed in a single work step and embedded into the undercoat mortar before application of the reinforced undercoat render of the façade surface.

– The Baumit Diagonal Reinforcing must be installed at all windows, doors and glazed doors under about 45°; alterna-tively, strips of Baumit Fibreglass Mesh with dimensions of at least 20 cm x 40 cm may be used.

– Any overlapping of fibreglass mesh (e.g. Baumit Fibreglass Mesh over Baumit Window Connection Profiles /Baumit Window Connection Profiles over Baumit Edge Protec-tors) must be at least 10 cm, see for example Figure 34.

Baumit Edge Protector serves to create a precise edge and ensures a constant layer thickness of the Baumit undercoat render in this area.

The Baumit Drip Edge Profile is installed accordingly. Flush installation is simplified by the included connectors.

When creating interior corners, the use of Baumit Corner Roll is recommended.

Rounded bends can be created with Baumit Edge Protector Flexible.

5.12.3. Protection for Façade Elements Subject to Heavy Mechanical Stresses

If a second layer of fibreglass mesh is required to increase the impact resistance, it is important to ensure that the first layer of mesh is installed without overlapping (butt joints). The un-dercoat render of the first layer must be allowed to set before application of the second layer and the overlapping of the se-cond mesh layer must be offset from the first.

5.12.4. Application of the Undercoat Render and Embed-ding of the Reinforcement

First, apply the undercoat render by hand or ma-chine to the appropriately prepared insulation boards (see Section 5.9 on page 38) in the thick-ness specified in Table 25.Install the fibreglass mesh into the freshly applied undercoat render in vertical or horizontal bands and without folds. Always begin the installation with at topmost level of scaffolding.

The overlapping of the fibreglass mesh bands must be at least 10 cm.

The fibreglass mesh must be positioned in the undercoat ren-der as specified in Table 25.

In order to ensure sufficient coverage, the embedded fibreg-lass mesh must be covered with undercoat render wet-in-wet.

5.13. Façade Integrations

5.13.1. Baumit Façade ProfilesBaumit Façade Profiles must be installed on stable, dust-free and grease-free substrates. Apply the Baumit adhesive (meaning the system-conforming undercoat render) to the back side of the Baumit Façade Profile over the full surface with a toothed trowel, bond it to intended position and secu-re it against sliding down. In the joint area, the two surfaces of the Baumit Façade Profiles must be entirely covered with Baumit PU Butt Joint Adhesive. Both bonding surfaces must be clean; smooth bonding surfaces must be roughed up. After the full-surface application of the Baumit PU Butt Joint Ad-hesive, press both profiles together and secure them against sliding.Remove any overflowing Baumit PU Butt Joint Adhesive with a trowel. After setting, the surface of the joint must be sealed with the highly flexible Baumit Coating Compound DKF 75. The surface can subsequently be worked with sandpaper, if necessary.After any subsequent work on all butt joints is complete, the coating of Baumit SilikonColor can be applied.

5.13.2. GroovesGrooves made at the construction site must be made in the insulation board before application of the reinforced under-coat render. This is done by cutting the groove shape out of the insulation board using a hot wire cutter or milling cutter. This may not be done in the area of the insulation board butt joints.The depth of a groove may not exceed 25% of the insulation material thickness and may not exceed 25 mm. The width of a groove may never be less than its depth. The grooves must have a trapezoidal or triangular shape.Then apply undercoat mortar to all surfaces and embed the Baumit Boss Profile Fabric in the area of the grooves.

The Baumit Fibreglass Mesh must overlap at leas 10 cm with the Baumit Boss Profile Fabric.After allowing a sufficient time to dry, apply the Baumit Pri-mer and the Baumit Topcoat Render.The use of plastic profiles (e.g. PVC) does not conform to the system and is therefore not permitted.

5.14. Application of the Baumit PrimerPriming with Baumit openPrimer and Baumit Uni-Primer has the following important purposes:

- Compensation for moisture extraction- Bonding primer- Levelling for alkaline undercoat renders- Improving the processing properties of the topcoat render

(friction characteristics)- Even drying of the topcoat render

For these reasons, careful installation contributes considerably to the quality of the Baumit External Wall Insulation System.

The substrate must be set and dry. Stir Baumit Primers tho-roughly with a slowly running stirring tool (the consistency of Baumit Primers changes in this way; the longer they are stir-red, the better and easier the processing).If necessary, the processing consistency can be adjusted through addition of a small amount of water (acc. to product data sheet). Apply Baumit Primers evenly and over the full surface using a lambskin roller or brush. At high temperatures, a second primer coat is recommended. If applying a second primer coat (e.g. differing moisture extraction characteristics of the substrates), allow a drying time of at least 24 hours bet-ween each step. Do not mix with other coatings or paints. Work uniformly and without interruption.

5.15. Topcoat RenderIn addition to the aesthetic design of the façade, one of the purposes of topcoat render is to protect the underlying layers of an EWIS from the weather.Important factors for aesthetic and technical quality are:- Sufficient drying time for the Baumit Undercoat Render- Careful application of the Baumit Primer (openPrimer/Uni-

Primer)- Protection of the façade surfaces from weathering influences

(use of appropriate scaffolding nets)- Installation by trained experts- Cleanliness and quality of the tools used- Processing temperature (at high temperature

and heavy sunlight, work should be performed according to the course of the sun; at low temperatures and high humidity levels, drying may be delayed → protect the façade surfaces!)

- Storage at the construction site

After allowing the Baumit Primer to dry for at least 24 hours, the Baumit Topcoat Render can be applied. Before applica-tion, always stir the render thoroughly with a stirring tool. If ne-cessary, the processing consistency can be adjusted through addition of a small amount of water (acc. to product data sheet). Apply the Baumit Topcoat Render over the full surface with a rust-free steel trowel or spray it on with a suitable fine rendering machine, scrape to grain thickness and rub with a plastic float. Do not mix with other coatings or paints. Work uniformly and without interruption.

The minimum layer thickness of the topcoat render is 1.5 mm or 2 mm in the case of a largely grooved texture.To produce a fine surface texture, which requires a maximum grain size in the topcoat render of less than 1.5 mm, the appli-cation of multiple layers is necessary to achieve the required minimum thickness.For this purpose, scrape the Baumit Topcoat Render K 1.5 mm to grain thickness and rub it. After an appropriate drying time, apply the Baumit UniTop Fill in 1-2 work steps, then rub it with a plastic float.

5.15.2. General Installation InstructionsColour uniformity can only be guaranteed within a single pro-duction batch. The development of the colour tone can be in-fluenced by the substrate conditions, temperature and humi-dity. When using various batches, these must always be mixed together before starting.

Basic protection against algae and fungi has already been ad-ded to Baumit Topcoat Renders. This produces a preventive and retarding effect. On buildings with critical environmental conditions (e.g. above-average moisture exposure, precipita-tion, proximity to bodies of water, heavy vegetation, location at the edge of woods, stands of vegetation and trees, plants growing near the building, etc.), we recommend enhancing this protection. Lasting prevention of algae and/or fungi infes-tation cannot be guaranteed.

In this regard, please also take note of the information sheets “Algae and Fungi on Façades” by the Quality Group EWIS as well as the ÖAP.

The sands used in Baumit Topcoat Renders are natural pro-ducts. As a result, it can happen in isolated cases that these are identifiable as slighter darker grains. In no way does this represent a quality flaw; it is simply a slight visual effect that attests to the natural character and natural properties of the raw materials used in Baumit Topcoat Render.

D1. PlanningIn principle, doubling up on an existing EWIS is comparable with conventional thermal renovation. Both the planning prin-ciples and the installation are identical. Only in the assess-ment of the situation and the resulting execution concepts and work steps do minor differences exist. The following points must be considered:

Existing EWIS with a supporting render system: To be considered as any other existing render surface. The new-ly installed Baumit EWIS must always be installed with additio-nal mechanical fastening into the supporting substrate.

Existing EWIS with a non-supporting render system: If the old render system is stripped (removed), the existing insulation material must be sanded thoroughly, cleaned and also anchored. The new Baumit EWIS can be installed with full-surface bonding without additional mechanical fastening.

For all insulation materials other than EPS-F, it is always necessary to anchor through both layers.

D1.8. Situation Assessment On-site assessment

An on-site assessment is a necessary first step to allow for correct evaluation of the condition of the existing EWIS. The following generally applicable inspections of the substrate suitability must be performed:

– Visual inspection – serves for evaluating the type and cha-racter of the substrate and, in particular, moisture damage and the identification of cracks. The function and seal of connections and terminations must also be inspected.

– Wipe test with an open palm or a dark cloth to check for the absence of dust, harmful blooms or chalk production by previous coatings.

– Scratch test or crack test with a hard, pointed object to ve-rify the strength and carrying capacity (e.g. cross cut test).

– Wetting test with water and a paint brush or spray bottle to check the absorbency and moisture level of the substrate.

– Tear-off test – to verify the bonding of the adhesive to the existing substrate. Apply the adhesive to be used later at va-rious representative locations on the façade in a layer thick-ness of at least 5 mm and embed the Baumit Fibreglass Mesh into this such that an approx. 10 cm strip remains exposed. Then protect the undercoat render from drying out too quickly. Upon tearing off at least 5 days later, only the reinforcement may be separated from the undercoat ren-der.

– Knocking test to check for cavities between the insulation layer and the substrate or between the old topcoat and the insulation layer.

– Opening of the system, approx. 1 x 1 m – to determine the following:

Adjoining componentsWhen planning the doubling up of insulation, adjoining com-ponents, such as sheeting (parapet sheeting, window ledges, etc.) or seals (areas exposed to splashing water), must be taken into consideration and adapted for the newly installed EWIS.

Planning documents, old photos, detail drawingsDuring planning and execution of doubling up on insulation, it is recommended that old planning documents and docu-ments pertaining to building laws be consulted, if available. These simplify the process of assessing the current conditions and help in making correct decisions.

D1.9. Execution ConceptThe execution concept is based on the results of the assess-ment and summarises all necessary work steps. It serves as the basis for the invitation to tender.

Only those installation steps that must be specially or additionally taken into consideration for Baumit Duplex Technology are described below. D2.1. Substrate Preparation

D2.1.1. Condition of the SubstrateThe evaluation of the substrate, in this case the old EWIS, is already regulated by the situation assessment. The substrate must always be dry, clean and free of blooms, separating layers (e.g. dirt, etc.) as well as loose or brittle parts.

Baumit Base Insulation Boards XPS TOP must al-ways be additionally anchored as of a height of 30 cm above

If the EWIS is run below the ground in the base area of the building (connection to pe-rimeter insulation), it must be protected against moisture and mechanical damage in this area with Baumit Base Protector Flexible and dimpled sheeting.

D2.2.1.1. Fastening with Baumit Bonding Anchors DuplexBaumit Bonding Anchors Duplex allow bonding of Baumit open – The Climate Façade and Baumit External Wall Insu-lation System EPS to an existing EWIS with an existing render system without anchoring. Non-supporting layers (e.g. old renders, shuttering concrete) including the old EWIS can be bridged over up to a total thickness of 9 cm.

D2.2.1.1.1. Installing the Baumit Bonding Anchors Duplex Install Baumit Bonding Anchors Duplex in a grid of max. 40 x 40 cm (= 6 Bonding Anchors/m²) and approx. 10 cm verti-cally from the solid building edges / openings (windows and doors) and approx. 10 cm horizontally from the Base Profile. The grid dimensions for 8, 10, 12 Bonding Anchors/m² can be found in 5.5.2, page 27.The grid is marked out using a chalk line. Alternatively, the Baumit Anchor Plumb Line can also be used. To use this, slide the eye onto the drill. With its 40 cm length, it will then always have the correct spacing from the previous Baumit Bonding Anchor Duplex. D2.2.1.1.2. Adhesive Application with the Border Bead and Dot Method Apply the adhesive using the border bead and dot method. The quantity of adhesive applied must be selected such that a contact surface with the substrate of at least 40% results, in consideration of the adhesive layer thickness (approx. 1 to 2 cm). Apply a line approximately 5 cm wide around the edge of the board (border bead) and three roughly palm-sized blobs of adhesive in the middle of the board.

D2.2.1.1.3. Installing the Insulation BoardsMix and apply the adhesive (Baumit Bonding Filler, Baumit open Bonding Filler W) as instructed in the product data sheet (border bead and dot method). Before bonding the insulation boards, throw blobs of adhesive about 10 – 20 cm thick onto the installed Baumit Bonding Anchors Duplex using a trowel. Then install the insulation board with a slightly sliding motion.Because the insulation boards must be installed “wet-in-wet” in the adhesive bed, it is important that the blobs of adhesive are applied to the Baumit Bonding Anchors Duplex immedi-ately before bonding the insulation board.

D2.2.1.2. Fastening with Baumit Screw Anchors

D2.2.1.2.1. Full-Surface Adhesive ApplicationOn even substrates, the adhesive can be applied over the full surface with a rust-free toothed trowel (toothing > 15 mm). The adhesive must be applied to the insulation board. Uneven areas in the substrate up to max. 5 mm can be evened out in the adhesive bed at this time.

D2.2.1.2.2. Anchoring the Insulation Boards

Selecting the AnchorsOnly the screw anchors approved for the respective system and for the respective wall material may be used. The wall material must fall into one of the following categories: brick and vertically perforated brick, hollow and solid blocks or normal concrete, lightweight concrete, aerated concrete. For shuttering concrete panels and shuttering concrete blocks, the anchoring must extend into the core concrete. Extraction tests must be performed according to ÖNORM B 6124 and documented. D2.3. Connections and Terminations

D2.3.1. Installation of the Topmost and Bottommost Insu-lation BoardsBecause a chimney effect behind the insulation boards of an existing EWIS cannot be ruled out, the following measures must be taken:

Topmost row of insulation boards: The topmost row of insulation boards of the existing EWIS must be removed and re-ins-talled using the float and butter method.

Bottommost row of insulation boards:If the EWIS ends above the terrain level, the bottommost row of insulation boards of the existing EWIS must be removed and re-installed using the float and butter method. If a base profile is to be used, see D2.1.3., page 50.

D2.3.2. Building EdgesThe building edges must be executed in an interlocking fa-shion with respect to the board width. Whole and half boards must be installed in alternation such that the half boards al-ways butt flush against the whole panels.

D2.3.3. Window and Door RevealsIn order to achieve sufficient insulation in the area of window and door reveals, it is recommended that all existing render and insulation layers be removed and recreated. Ensure suf-ficient insulation over the frame.

Old renderOld, usually mineral-based render system. Paint or other coa-tings can be applied to the old render.

Doubling upRemediation of an existing EWIS. The existing insulation layer is used as the surface onto which the new EWIS is installed. It is not necessary to remove or dispose of the old EWIS, the old insulation also remains as additional insulation and continu-es to protect against heat and cold.

Levelling courseUndercoat of render mortar that is applied directly to the insu-lation boards to produce a level surface. The levelling layer is not counted as part of the nominal thickness of the undercoat render.

Float and butter methodIn the first step, the bonding mortar is applied vertically to the board with a toothed trowel (at least 10 mm, depending on the substrate). In the second step, the bonding mortar is ap-plied horizontally to the bonding substrate using the toothed trowel. Then the insulation board is pressed into position with a slightly sliding motion and with sufficient force.

Chimney effectIf an open-ended air layer exists behind the insulation boards due to faulty bonding (e.g. only dot bonding), convection can arise. Air can penetrate through faulty terminations (e.g. base, window, window sill), where it rises behind the EWIS due to thermal action and escapes out the top.

Shuttering concreteShuttering concrete blocks of wood-chip or expanded clay concrete with or without integrated additional insulation ac-cording to ÖNORM B 3208 serve as non-supporting shutte-ring elements for the supporting core concrete.

Like-new substrateUnrendered substrates after completion of the building shell (new construction).

Render systemAll layers applied to the outside of the thermal insulation ma-terial. The render system consists of the undercoat render, the reinforcement and the topcoat render, including primer.

Undercoat renderRender layer that is applied directly to the insulation material or the levelling layer. The reinforcement is embedded in this layer. The reinforced undercoat render contributes the most to the mechanical properties of the render.

Topcoat render including primerFirst the primer is applied to the undercoat render to improve the bonding characteristics and optimise the processing pro-

perties. The topcoat render is then applied to the primed un-dercoat render; it protects the EWIS primarily from weathering influences and also provides a decorative appearance.

StrippingThis involves cutting into the render system of the old EWIS at intervals of approx. 80 cm and pulling it off in vertical strips.

Dew pointThis is the temperature at which gaseous water vapour turns into a liquid. Air that is not completely saturated with water vapour has a relative humidity of less than 100%. At higher temperatures, the air can take up correspondingly more wa-ter vapour. However, as the temperature falls, the amount of water vapour the air can hold decreases. If the temperature falls still further, the excess water vapour condenses out as liquid water. With proper planning and execution of an EWIS, the dew point is located in the outer layers or even outside the insulation.

Wall materialThis is the outer shell of a building, onto which additional lay-ers, such as an EWIS, can be applied. The wall material can consist of various materials, such as brick, concrete, shutte-ring concrete or wood materials, etc.

Thermal bridge (sometimes incorrectly called a cold bridge)These are areas in components of a building through which heat can escape to the outside more quickly. In the area of thermal bridges, the room-side surface temperature of buil-ding components falls more quickly than in normal areas when outdoor temperatures are low. When the temperature falls below the dew point, condensation forms. The possibility of mould growth increases at thermal bridges. Particularly at connections between building components, thermal bridges must be prevented through detailed planning and careful exe-cution.

Water vapour diffusionThis is the process by which a difference in the concentration of water vapour molecules is balanced out between different layers of air or building components (inside → outside). De-pending on the level of the material-specific vapour diffusion resistance, the equalising of the concentration takes place more quickly or slowly.

Water vapour diffusion resistance coefficient µ [ ]This value expresses how well a building material prevents the diffusion of water vapour.

Two-layer installationCreation of a new EWIS in two layers with the same or different insulation material thicknesses. The insulation boards are bonded one to the other directly and over their full surface.
