Every since Sideline Sid was old enough to drive he wanted a sports car. On a beautiful Easter Saturday his wish came true – except he had

to hand the keys back to Bay Nissan, after he took a Nissan 370Z Coupe

for spin for his next car review for the Bay Driver.

While the brochure picked up before viewing the Nissan 370Z, told us the vehicle had a 3.7 litre V6 engine with a seven-speed automatic transmission, the intrepid reviewer was completely unprepared for the Sheer

Silver Nissan Coupe that awaited him on the Bay Nissan auto-court.

Make no mistake – this is a vehicle for car lovers who are serious about driving. From the sleek and curvy exterior to innovation that includes the Bose audio system and intelligent key entry, which is topped off by the powerful V6 engine on a base that’s shorter, wider and lighter than before.

Snazzy!First impressions were a snazzy sports

car, shown off by the aerodynamic styling, featuring front under-body and rear spoilers. Standouts were the Nissan Coupe Z badge indicators and the lightweight alloy wheels

that suggest a racing machine wait-ing to be unleashed.

Other exterior features were styl-ish aluminium-look door handles, electric folding door mirrors, Exon auto-levelling headlights and a rear fog light.

First impressions by the re-viewer, who is approaching his seventh decade, is he’d struggle to get into the low slung coupe proved unfounded, with the transition from roadside to the driver’s hot seat easily achieved.

Sitting in the leather driver’s seat feels like the seat’s been moulded around you. The four-way seat controls are conveniently situated right alongside the gear shift, which makes for an easy transition to the perfect fi t.

In keeping with a sports

car, there is a maze of instru-ment panels. Right in the driver’s line of sight is the speedometer, tachometer and odometer, while in the centre of the consul is a trip computer that includes aver-age speed, trip meter, distance to empty fuel tank, current fuel consumption and outside temperature.

Just in case you’re forgetful, the manufac-turers have added numerous warning lights and beepers, including a headlight and key-in warning chimes, door ajar warning light and oil pressure/voltmeter warning light.

The tilt-adjustable steering column includes steering wheel controls for the Blue-tooth handsfree phone system, along with steering wheel audio controls.

And did I tell you about the state-of-the-art Bose CD player with AM/FM radio that has a massive eight high quality speakers, includ-ing two sub-woofers?

Performance powerHowever, the Nissan 370Z is unasham-

edly about performance. It cruises around town with ease and out on the Tauranga expressway gives a hint of the beast beneath the bonnet, whenever a light touch of the accelerator powered the V6 horsepower forward. Another hint of the Nissan 370Z power is shown with the speedometer scaling up to 280km/h.

The V6 motor is complemented with the seven-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode option for the discerning driver. Steering wheel paddle shifters allow

the driver to quickly hit another gear if desired.

In heavy mid-morning Easter traffi c, the Nissan 370Z behaved like a sedan and the tight turning circle made backing into a confi ned parking space a breeze. However, it was the quick-fi re potential

out on the open road that grabbed Sideline Sid’s attention.

Personal and luggage storage has been well thought out in the racy two-seater. A centre storage consul is complemented

with glove box and door pockets that include bottle holders.

A storage bay behind the front seat gives additional personal storage.

Opening the rear door skywards, reveals a boot that will take plenty of luggage for a trip away, with a rear cargo blind and tie-down hooks in the rear luggage space.

In keeping with the power beneath the bonnet, the Nissan 370Z has a myriad of safety features. Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control System and Anti-Lock Braking System are just the start.

A highly rigid monocoque body, side intru-sion bars, front and rear crumple zones and an energy-absorbing steering column provide a safety bubble second to none.

The real surprise of the performance orien-tated two-seater, was the fuel economy, with the seven-speed automatic credited with 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

While the Nissan Coupe is not every-one’s cup of tea, it will certainly appeal to motorists that require a stylish performance vehicle, with the price tag of $63,495 ex-tremely competitive with similar performance cars.
