Fellow Governors Bay resident Sandra McBride, who instigated the competition, said she first made contact with Miss Mahy during the filming of Kaitangata Twitch in Governors Bay in 2007 and asked her if a poetry competition could be run in her name. Miss Mahy agreed to it and the Governors Bay Margaret Mahy Children’s Poetry Competition was born. “That was five and a half years ago. The first year the competition didn’t really get off the ground, but the second year we had a few entries from the inner-harbour area. The next year we had 40 entries, which came from the greater Banks Peninsula area,” Ms McBride said. “In the third year we received 100 entries, and for this last one we got over 200 entries. After the quakes we had decided to invite all the schools in Canterbury to be involved. “Margaret had help from two or three of us for the judging, which we did over five or six weeks. But she always did the final judging – she loved it. Though she always found it difficult to judge the entries. She found it hard to settle on one. And she would write notes to the winners and encourage them to keep writing.” Entries were in two sections – seven and under and 12 and under. Creative New Zealand has provided funding for the last three years. Prize giving was held at the Governors Bay fete, and while Ms Mahy had always presented the prizes, for her last competition this year she was unavailable, Ms McBride said. “It was on at the same time as the Writers and Readers Festival in Wellington and Margaret was double-booked. She wanted to be at the prize-giving but there was going to be a lot of people she knew at the festival and it was an opportunity for her to catch up with them so we encouraged her to go to that,” Ms McBride said. Ms McBride intended to approach Ms Mahy’s family to seek their permission to continue using her name for the competition. Apart from the competition, she would miss Margaret as a friend, Ms McBride said. “She was a recent friend and we had grown a lot closer in recent months. We used to go to the movies together. The last one we saw was The Iron Lady. We also saw My Week with Marilyn and The Hunger Games.” A memorial service for Margaret Mahy is being held today at 2pm. Ferrymead bridge work delayedWORK on the temporary structures of the Ferrymead Bridge, which was due to be completed last month, has been delayed.

“The completion of the on-site geotechnical work and a better understanding of the variable nature of the ground and rock in the riverbed at the site has meant designing the new bridge to achieve the new building standard is more complex than first expected,” general manager city environment group Jane Parfitt said.

“We are continuing to work through the issues to finalise the design for the new bridge

and now expect this work will be completed mid-September. We are confident of getting a suitable design finalised by this time, which will enable us to begin negotiating the construction contract and work programme.

“In the meantime, we are proceeding with transferring services from the existing bridge to the temporary structures and completing the approaches to these. Traffic will be diverted onto the temporary structures as soon as work can start demolishing the existing bridge. This is now expected to be in about five months.”

New sign points to Sumner business recovery

Enterprising business owners: Standing in front of the new sign are, from left: Geraldine Shackleton, artist Jason Kelly, Sabrina Weber, Tanya Michaels, Rachael Lonsdale and Kath Cross.

A BUSINESS group aiming to revitalise Sumner Village has erected a sign to direct people to the business area.

The sign, which has the words ‘Sumner Village’ along with an arrow, has been placed in the garden area on the corner of Marriner Street and The Esplanade, directing people straight ahead to the Sumner Village.

“When coming to Sumner most people turn left at the Esplanade, go to the beach, have a coffee or ice cream and go home. This sign aims to show visitors that there’s life beyond the beach and that as well as the sea and sand Sumner has a fabulous, unique hub of businesses that need the wider community’s support,” Sumner Business Group chairperson Geraldine Shackleton said.

Local artist Jason Kelly created the sign, and materials were either donated or supplied at cost by local businesses.

The Sumner Business Group was formed after the February earthquake to revitalise and promote the Sumner Village area and grew

from a core group of eight businesspeople to an organisation that now represents around 35 local businesses.

The erection of the sign signals a key turning point for the group, as it was the first initiative of its 12-month strategic plan, Miss Shackleton said. The plan includes a new brand that will represent Sumner Village, a range of events and marketing and advertising campaigns.

The Sumner Business Group has been working with Recover Canterbury and has received funding from the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust.

“Working with Recover Canterbury has been fabulous and the advice and support we have received has been invaluable,” Miss Shackleton said.

The Sumner Business Group acknowledges the support of the following businesses that helped make the new Sumner Village sign possible: JC Building Sumner; Erik Ellis, Landscape Architect; PlaceMakers, Cranford St; Barrie Club.

Lyttelton to get its civic squareTHE site Lyttelton residents have been using as a community space is to become the town’s official civic square.

Christchurch City Council has purchased the site at 44 London Street, Lyttelton, on the corner of Canterbury St, for the development of the square, which was identified as a priority by the local community in the recently adopted Lyttelton Master Plan.

Following the demolition of the building housing the delicatessen and café Ground, residents had adopted the space as a place to meet and socialise. This informal use of the site by the community will carry on, at no cost, until the development of the site as a civic square gets underway.

The council approved $2 million through the Annual Plan process this year for strategic land purchases arising from Suburban Centres Programme-related master plans. The purchase of the London Street site is the first to be funded from this money.

The Master Plan’s vision for the site includes the relocation of the Lyttelton War Memorial Cenotaph and the creation of space for recreation and socialisation. There will be a children’s play area, landscaping and an improved connection with council-owned land adjoining the site.

The development plans also include ‘daylighting’ the barrel drains. Currently, the historic brick-lined stormwater drain that crosses the site is underground. The plan is to open it up so that the heritage feature is visible. Council has done this elsewhere in the city, for example Cambridge Green in Salisbury St and Jackson Creek in Addington.

“There is no capital funding for construction this financial year. However, we have already commenced discussions with our Greenspace

team on starting to progress the preliminary design work for the civic square. We anticipate that there will be public consultation on this in due course, though there is no time frame at present,” team leader planning Ivan Thompson said.

A final decision still needs to be made on the location of the Cenotaph, although the community response to the Lyttelton Master Plan indicated that there was a level of support for the Civic Square location. We will need to consult with the RSA further on this.”

Councillor Claudia Reid said the land purchase would be a catalyst for the recovery and rebuild of Lyttelton.

“Lyttelton does not have a public gathering place for community activities. It is wonderful that we have seized this opportunity so quickly after the adoption of the Lyttelton Master Plan. We now have a plan and the funding for this key site for the people of Lyttelton. I have no doubt that Lyttelton’s new civic square will become the town’s pulsating heart.”

Redevelopment: Artist’s impression of the Lyttelton Master Plan’s new civic square. The civic square design aims to provide more open space for community gatherings and performance, an innovative children’s playground and a more central site for the relocation of the Lyttelton War Memorial Cenotaph.

Carving to be displayed in LytteltonChelsea ShoverSTUDENTS at Allenvale School worked for 12 weeks on a taonga which will be displayed in Whakaraupo Carving Centre in Lyttelton. Pictured with students from the school are Allenvale’s Kaumatua, Bill Karaitiana (standing) and Caine Tauwhare (seated), the carver and tutor who supervised the project. Dylan Roberts, a senior student, created the initial design. All pupils at Allenvale, which caters to students with special needs, were involved in the project. Some students worked on the project at the Whakaraupo Centre, and students who could not attend added their handprints to the backboard. Once the carving was finished, Mr Karaitiana blessed the taonga and students performed a haka.

Quiet reflections: Boats at anchor on a foggy morning in Diamond Harbour

The photo selected for publication is from Pete Bloxham, of Diamond Harbour.

For our readers who enjoy taking photographs, the Bay Harbour News is giving you the chance to get your photograph published and put forward for selection to win a prize – this time a Meal voucher from Winnie Bagoes, Ferrymead. Your photo could be of a local scene, a family snap, anything that captures the heart and spirit of the Bay Harbour area. Please include a caption, your name, where you live in the area and email the photo to [email protected] as a high resolution JPEG file attachment (at least 1MB). Happy snapping!

News in briefSumner pipeline back undergroundSUMNEr beachgoers will soon get their easy access from the Esplanade to the beach back, with work on an underground pipeline set to wrap up.

For six months, Fulton Hogan has been working on replacing the wastewater pipeline, which was broken in several places as a result of the February and June

earthquakes last year.As a result, the Esplanade has had its

footpath access and car parking space reduced and the road narrowed in places.

The 1.5km pipeline runs from the playground in Scarborough Park to an existing pipeline near the foot of Clifton Hill.

Sumner skate ramp a community effortTHE skateboarding half-pipe ramp installed on the community centre site in Sumner is proving popular with local youngsters. Thomas Harcourt, 13, pictured, has his own style – on a scooter. Local business owner Sabrina Weber, the driving force behind the ramp’s installation, had support from local resident Philip Elmey and local business owners Glenn and Tanya Michaels. Mitre10 Ferrymead gave a discount on supplies and Scott Buckner donated the frame, which was revamped to create the new ramp.

“While this is only a temporary home for the ramp, we like to see this as a first step in the right direction, aiming for a permanent creative platform somewhere in Sumner,” Ms Weber said.

House hunting: The Brown family, Kirstin and Mike with son Ocean, aged 3, are looking for a home in the Sumner area.

A RENOVATION in Akaroa has been named one of this year's top Canterbury properties, winning a supreme award in the Canterbury Region Registered Master Builders PlaceMakers 2012 House of the Year.

Miles Construction Limited was awarded the PlaceMakers Supreme Award for Renovation of the Year, as well as the Renovation Award $250,000 - $500,000 for its transformation of an Akaroa house.

“This old Kiwi bach, perched on a steep site facing southwards with views over Akaroa, has been skilfully transformed into a beautiful, modern home,” the judges commented.

“The site posed numerous problems, with difficult access due to most of the build positioned on the steepest part of the section furthest from the road, but this has been expertly carried out.

“All of the home’s steelwork has been well executed, including that of the large wide-opening doors spanning the entire wall towards the view.

“New blends well with the old, and with limited cracking following the area’s recent earthquakes, the home is very well built.”

The builders’ entries were recognised by

Hoping to make Sumner homeDESPITE the earthquake damage, adventure-loving couple Mike and Kirstin Brown, with son Ocean, would love to live in the Sumner area.

They recently sailed as a family across the Pacific and were living and working in Australia before returning to Christchurch, but their lives changed in an instant when a skateboarding accident left Mike a paraplegic.

On June 11 he was riding a longboard down a hill in the Queensland city of Gladstone when he and a car collided.

“I was lying on the ground and couldn’t feel my legs at that moment so I knew something was quite serious.”

The impact dislocated and fractured his spine at the T12 level and he now has no feeling below his bellybutton.

After four weeks in a Brisbane hospital the family came to Christchurch to be closer to relatives and friends.

They arrived at the Burwood Spinal Unit three weeks ago.

Kirstin and Ocean are staying in on-site accommodation provided by the hospital, but Mike is due to be discharged in three weeks and they need to find a home by then.

Because they enjoy the outdoors, they would love to live in the Sumner area.

“We like the community spirit of the place

and everyone seems to be pretty happy out there despite the damage that’s occurred so that’s where our first choice lies.”

He also wants to be close to fresh air and the beach.

“Now more than ever for me it’s going to be quite important to be able to access that and being on the flat will enable me to wheelchair to the beach or take my son for a walk.”

One of his goals is to get fit enough to surf again, in a kayak.

They have been looking hard but finding a suitable property is proving difficult.

“Obviously there are a lot of houses damaged on the hills and people that love Sumner like we do are looking to move to the flat so they’re getting snapped up reasonably quickly.”

They planned to drop fliers in letterboxes in case someone thinking of selling their house would talk to them before going to the general market.

Mike still wants to be involved in the Christchurch rebuild and is considering setting up a business in his trade as an electrician.

Anyone who wanted to assist the Brown family in their house search could contact Mike on 027 919 1822 or [email protected].

He has also written a blog about his experiences at http://mikesbigbreak.tumblr.com.

members of the Canterbury Region Registered Master Builders and the local building industry at Wigram Air Force Museum last Friday.

There were 23 Gold Award winners from the Canterbury region, which will now be assessed alongside Gold Award winners from the other 11 regions of the competition to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in September.

National category winners, PlaceMakers Supreme Awards for the Renovation of the Year and the House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.

Cooking demonstrations start this weekendTHE Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is open every Saturday, 10am to 1pm, whatever the weather, whatever is thrown at us.

Starting this Saturday, August 4, at 10.30am and 11.40am Jen will be demonstrating cooking of her gorgeous Goan/Indian curries. Tastings and portions will be available to buy. This is a first for the market and we hope for more cooking and tastings in future weeks, including Egyptian and Kiwi kai.

Lois from Grannies Goodies is looking after a very sick son-in-law and we wish her well. Linwood College students continue to help out at the market. We regularly have Jamie, Lochie, Serena, Poppie and Caitlyn helping and others are there on a casual basis.

Check out Somerfield’s Nursery plants for spring planting. Coming soon are fresh herbal teas. Adrian’s game pies continue to stun the public with their exotic flavours. We hope to have fresh asparagus and tomatoes this month.

Tom recently clocked up 10.2km sweeping the market and going about his management of the market.

cream and butter. Gently poach Akaroa cod in milk. Make a roux by placing 30g melted butter in a frying pan and gently frying a finely chopped onion until transparent. Add a tbsp of plain flour, remove from heat and gradually add 200ml of cold milk, stirring gently and continuously until it turns into a thick sauce. Place fish in a baking dish, pour sauce over it, spoon mash on top and cover in grated cheese. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown at 180 degree Celsius. Serve with broccoli and sliced carrots braised in water and orange juice.

Trader of the week

Out of the chaos of the earthquake, the Volcano has risen again. The café in Lyttelton was destroyed in February 2011 but the name lives on at farmers’ markets around Christchurch. Lois Ogilvie and Sue Curtin had run a market stall at the Lyttelton farmers’

market together for six years at that time. Since then they have built and expanded the Volcano brand of delicatessen food, which can be found at six markets around town every weekend (the hot soup has also been a life-saver on recent cold mornings!).

The future of the rebuild of the Volcano Café is uncertain in the present climate.

“The insurance company owes us a building according to our policy, but we are going to wait and see what happens over the next 18 months or so before we embark on any reconstruction,” Lois says.

Meanwhile the Volcano market stalls are busy enough, she says. “It is a pleasure to see week by week the buying public staying with us and appreciating the value of buying local and eating fresh.”

Music August 4 - Nick Lee, soft rockAugust 11 - Mark Lane, classic acoustic rock

Mark plays under the shadow of his munted house on Mt Pleasant Road. He has been a local at the market shopping and singing since its inception.

Let us know what you think about the market, or for any help or enquiries contact Tom on 027 600 7779.

Mix it up: Spice up this week’s family dishes by buying from Volcano’s fresh pickings.

part time courses starting soon

0800 475 455www.agnz.co.nz

Level 3This course is ideal for lifestyle block owners, home gardeners and/or commercial growers and will provide key knowledge and skills required for organic growing.

The overall aim is to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity and increase soil and plant health, instead of relying on artificial fertilisers and poisonous sprays. On successful completion you will be awarded a Telford Certificate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3).

course start: Friday 17th august 2012 in christchurch and Lyttelton with an information meeting, with classes starting in mid-september. course cost $250.00

Gardening enthusiasts, growers, lifestyle block owners, professional gardeners, farmers and orchardists of all ages are invited to register for this popular course held here in Christchurch and Lyttelton.

Scheduled to start with an information meeting planned for Friday 17th August, this 8 month long, one day a week, course explores the latest trends in sustainable growing. The overall aim is to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity, increase soil and plant health and avoid the use of artificial fertilisers and sprays. A science-based approach explores a wide range of organic techniques and systems. Topics covered include organic philosophies, certification, soil management, soil food webs, composting, companion planting, liquid organic fertilisers, crop rotation, green manures, weed control, pest and disease management, plant knowledge and an introduction to permaculture. This knowledge can be applied not only to food crops, but to the cultivation of any plants – from suburban gardens to pastures, orchards, shelter belts and woodlots.

Students meet once a week on a Tuesday (Lyttelton) or Thursday (Christchurch) from 9.30am to 3pm during the school terms. In addition to attending tutorials, workshops or fieldtrips, students will need to complete practical and theory assignments in their own time. You will be working towards a Telford Certificate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3). Having some prior knowledge of horticulture and growing plants is recommended although keen beginners are invited to apply. Although this programme has a horticultural bias, pastoral farmers wishing to get an understanding of what organic farming is all about will also find this course of value. Networking between organic growing enthusiasts is an added bonus to joining this course.

THE Farmers Market typifies what is great about Lyttelton – a place where the locals meet to buy great, locally created food and produce, chat, catch up, live more sustainably and just enjoy life. Part of the joy of coming to the market is the relationships we as customers make with the stall holders. It’s lovely to be able to come and chat at our favourite stalls about food, what’s in season and also life in general.

That’s something that really appeals to Andrew and Gerry Lewis from Horotane Foods. They have been trading at the market for many years now. They came to the market from a background of working extremely hard in the hospitality industry.

When they moved back to Christchurch they wanted to create a lifestyle for their young family that mirrored Gerry’s free life as a child in Wellington. So they left the restaurant trade and bought a lifestyle block in the Horotane Valley. Initially they were producing vegetables for the restaurant trade but then they decided that selling directly at the farmers market was the lifestyle they wanted.

Luckily for Lyttelton they choose to trade at our market.

“It’s a lovely way to make a living and get that two-way contact with your customers,” Gerry says. “Often people queue up and wait patiently just so they can chat to me.”

She also loves the trading between stall holders. Sometimes, husband Andrew will pop

a box of seasonal produce into the van to take home for Gerry to create meals for the family.

For Andrew and Gerry, trading at the Lyttelton Farmers Market has enabled them to achieve the lifestyle that suites them. They can live according to the seasons, create beautiful food with seasonal produce, bring up their young family in a more rural environment and enjoy the interaction with the customers who regularly visit their stall each week.

The Lyttelton Farmers Market is open every Saturday 10am to 1pm at Lyttelton Main School, Oxford St, Lyttelton. The market is a Project Lyttelton Initiative.

ALTHOUGH not usually into scientific research, I recently attended a presentation by two university students. Within minutes I was listening with fascination and interest to every single word that first Michelle Marquet from Lincoln University followed by Keely Gwatkin from Canterbury University presented.

Every year the Ihutai Trust helps fund summer

student research related to the estuary that we believe members of the public may be interested in and that may assist local authorities achieve their obligations as guardians of the estuary.

Michelle conducted surveys with recreational users of our estuary to look at the perception by the users on the microbiological water quality and where that understanding came from. It was

certainly interesting to see the method used to conduct this survey and the comments made by those interviewed. The result comes down to the fact that users of the estuary like to be provided with good, solid and, yes, scientific information on the water quality so they can draw their own conclusions on when and why, or why not to go in or on the estuary. In other words, nobody likes to be told what or what not to do. Given the correct information, we are quite capable of deciding for ourselves what is best for us. Hence the need for more research and a variety of means of how to get the results out to us, the estuary users.

Keely then presented research conducted on the potential impact of the recent earthquake events. This is a question I have heard many times since September 2010, especially when people are wondering if our special godwits that come here all the way from Alaska and Siberia would have enough to eat with mudflats looking like the surface of the moon with their many silt

craters. But here it is according to Keely. I quote from the research conclusion:

“Cockle counts, biomass and condition are similar to levels recorded before the EQ disturbance; therefore, they still provide structure to the estuarine habitat, remain a food source for birds, and continue to play an important role in estuarine nutrient cycling”. Also, “species richness recorded within the sites sampled suggests continued high productivity and provision of adequate resources

for estuarine birds”. This is fantastic news!

There were two excellent presentations answering some key questions ‘doing the rounds’. I highly

recommend you take some time to view their research on our website www.estuary.org.nz. In the meantime it will be a front seat for me when the next research result is presented.

Volunteers invited to join in planting day ENVIRONMENTALLY-minded volunteers are invited to join forces at this weekend’s Trees For Canterbury (TFC) annual planting at Orton Bradley Park.

TFC is planting over 500 native plants at

Orton Bradley this Sunday as part of their continuing community revegetation and biodiversity enhancement project.

The environmental event is part of an ongoing partnership between the community,

TFC and the Orton Bradley Park Board. With plenty to see and do in the park,

organisers suggest making a day of it. Attractions include excellent walks to

various special features, wonderful collections of mature trees, picnic areas and a children’s playground. If a more sedate day is needed, there are the wonderfully restored buildings and displays of old machinery, as well as a working water wheel, which was installed in 1887 and used to generate electricity from 1901.

Orton Bradley died in 1943 leaving the park “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people”. Over 50 years of planting many varieties of trees has ensured his legacy has continued.

On Sunday, signs will be out in Charteris Bay to guide volunteers to the areas for planting. Planting starts at 10am and volunteers are asked to bring a spade, a picnic lunch and lots of family and friends.

Many hands: Volunteers taking part in the 2011 planting near the historic schoolhouse.

Hard at work: Simon Martin, left, Orton Bradley Park Board chairperson since 1997, and Brian Sperry, a volunteer from Murchison. ►

Outdoor fires may not be wise Daryl SayerOVER the past few weeks I have been contacted by a couple of people on different occasions inquiring whether or not they can light a fire to burn rubbish. One was intending to use a drum in the backyard, the other a bonfire on a rural property.

While this may seem a quick and easy way to get rid of rubbish, due to the requirements of the territorial authorities it is probably potentially cheaper to load it onto a trailer and take it to a transfer station. It is not the role of the Fire Service to approve (or not) outdoor fires and any inquiries should be directed to the Christchurch City Council or Environment Canterbury. However, the following information can be found on their websites:

• Outdoor burning in residential areas within Christchurch and Banks Peninsula is not permitted

at any time of the year without a resource consent from ECan.

• Outdoor burning on rural properties in Christchurch Clean Air Zones 1 and 2 is not permitted without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury during the Christchurch winter outdoor fire ban, which runs from May 1 to August 31.

Breaching these requirements may incur fines, so if any doubt exists it is best to make inquiries before striking a match.

Recent calls: June 12 – gas fire malfunction; June 17 – fire on beach; June 21 – kitchen fire; June 26 – investigate alarm activation; July 6 – rubbish fire; July 20 – fence fire; July 21 – investigate burning smell in house.

Action off the fieldPeter Dawson

As I write this, we’re heading into Super Rugby finals time. As well as the action on the field, and the major efforts of the Canterbury Crusaders, I’d like to make mention of the efforts of the people off the field, including the St John event teams.

St John is New Zealand’s leading provider of event medical services. We look after events of all types and sizes – from community gala days to major international sports matches.

Our events teams are a customised country-wide service, from the first aider on the side

of the local football field to roving pedalmedics at marathons to specialised paramedics at motorsport events. Many of our paramedics began their careers standing with a first aid kit at the rugby.

It has been a time of great sadness for us older and longer-serving members of St John in Lyttelton after learning of the sudden death of Garth Sergison on July 21. Garth gave 16 years of his life to his community of Lyttelton and to St John as a volunteer

ambulance officer based at the Lyttelton St John Ambulance Station. Garth gave his service at a time when Lyttelton St John was 100 percent volunteer and the ambulances were manned by volunteers who had to down tools and leave their work to respond in the ambulances during the day and be on call at home during the nights and weekends.

Garth’s service to the Lyttelton community through St John Ambulance has resulted in the

saving of numerous lives and ensuring that ultimate recovery and continuing quality of life has been extended to many more. This is a wonderful legacy to be remembered by. Rest in peace Garth, our good friend and colleague.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James

Romantic, liberating and totally addictive, Fifty Shades of Grey is a novel that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you for ever. When literature student Anastasia Steele interviews successful entrepreneur Christian Grey, she finds him very attractive and deeply intimidating. Convinced that their meeting went badly, she tries to put him out of her mind – until he turns up at the store where she works part-time, and invites her out. Unworldly and innocent, Ana is shocked to find she wants this man. And, when he warns her to keep her distance, it only makes her want him more. But Grey is tormented by inner demons, and consumed by the need to control. As they embark on a passionate love affair, Ana discovers more about her own desires, as well as the dark secrets Grey keeps hidden away from public view …

School notice board

A leap into the futureOUR Lady Star of the Sea has leapt into the future of learning! We are now the proud owners of six Acer notebook devices and seven iPads – how wonderful for our children’s learning! Already, the students in St Paul classroom are enjoying the routine of using the netbooks for numeracy time. The new maths resource is now on the school server and so the children can work from the digital textbook independently. This allows them to manage their own learning, something we as teachers strive to instill in them.

It will be great to see the junior school using the iPads, which will allow for a world of exploration at their fingertips. Into the future we go!

Young explorers: Zoe Robinson, front, and Shannon Brennan are thrilled their new devices will enable them to work independently.

LAST term, years 5 and 6 students at Redcliffs School studied the Fair Trade organisation and Fair Trade products. Josie Eccersall from the Bishopdale Trade Aid shop came to school to talk to the group about how Trade Aid and Fair Trade works to give producers in developing countries a better price for their goods.

As a result of their inquiry investigations the students decided to run a stall to raise funds for Josie’s shop. Everyone made something to sell at the stall. Items for sale included a great array of food, handcrafts such as drawings and painted rocks and even an original movie. Parents generously supplied ingredients to enable the stall to go ahead.

The children raised $550, which was presented to Josie on the first day of the term. She was thrilled to accept it and said it would go towards one of the many projects that the local Trade Aid c o m m i t t e e s u p p o r t s . The students are looking forward to hearing more details from her about the project. It is likely to be something to do with cocoa or coffee as those were products that were specifically focused on during their study.

Josie said that as a further result of the Redcliffs investigation, the Trade Aid committee had become aware that their educational resources needed to be more user-friendly for primary-age children. They are now going to develop new, more suitable resources for children to use.

Fundraising efforts a great success

Trade Aid stall: Students made items to sell and raise money for Trade Aid after finding out about the organisation’s work.

New traffic signage welcome“DON’T ever give up” might be the catch cry from those Heathcote Valley School community members who have had a long association with the school.

In July, the final approval and installation was granted for use of new flashing 40km/h signs to be erected outside the school on Bridle Path Road. The concern for traffic safety and speed has been a historic concern dating back 20 years or more. Various approaches have been made to the council and traffic organisations during that time to no avail.

The downhill nature of Bridle Path Road and the lack of being able to establish a managed crossing have continued to cause consternation to staff, parents and students alike. Post-earthquakes, the road has had an increased volume of large vehicles, increasing the challenges to safety.

The school is greatly indebted to Joy Kingsbury and her team at the Christchurch City Council for seeing this process through. A comprehensive survey of the community also established other prioritised needs for the local area in providing safe passage for students to school. These enhancements will be carried out over the next weeks.

A team of parents and a staff representative have worked tirelessly to facilitate the progress so far. The school will design a Travel Safety Plan to be used in conjunction with the new signage and improvements being made around the community.

Rob Kavanagh, deputy principal of the school and part of the traffic team, is extremely happy with the outcome.

“The council has really come to the party on this and have investigated all options thoroughly,” he said.

It is hoped these improvements will provide increased safety

for students coming to and from school, and in turn encourage more students to walk and cycle to school, therefore reducing congestion.

Heathcote Valley SchoolDiana FearyPrincipalIT was great to see both children and staff arrive at school with enthusiasm on Monday, July 16, obviously refreshed by the two-week break.

This term is a big term in more ways than one. We have an 11-week term, which started with parent, student and teacher conferences last week. The Education Review Office (ERO) will visit us in week four and our Kapahaka group will perform with Lyttelton Main School on the evening of September 4 at the CBS Arena as part of the Cultural Festival 2012.

In the last week of term, we are proud to bring you our whole school production celebrating Lyttelton West’s first 125 years. Much of our teaching focus (outside literacy and numeracy) will be around this special event. The 125th reunion will take place on Sunday, October 21, and registration forms are available from the school website – www.lytteltonwest.school.nz.

This term also we are keen to look at how we report student progress and achievement. This will involve workshops with parents, teachers and students, with the aim of refining our practice in this area.

Room 4 completed an art project, Our Lost Buildings, at the end of term two and these are on display in our office entrance. The children were given a selection of buildings/landmarks that have been lost/damaged due to the quakes Canterbury has been experiencing. They then proceeded to produce their own piece of art around this using charcoal. Well worth a look!

An up to date and effective will and powers of attorney are the must-haves in your

personal legal toolbox.

Protect your family and property with a Legal Health Check

“ “

If events in Christchurch since September 2010 have taught us anything, then the unpredictability of life and our ability to cope in adversity must be high on the list of lessons learned.

Other events with dramatic impact can occur without warning. Planning for the future security of families is subject to rapid unexpected change but steps can be taken in advance of the sudden onset of debilitating illness or a life-changing accident.

Our clients are often concerned to provide financial security for those they care about. Often they also want to ensure that a trusted person has the authority to make decisions on their behalf if they are unable to do so.

If you do not have a will you lose the power to decide what you want done with your assets when you die and the administration of your estate may be more costly and complicated. Instructions to prepare a will and powers of attorney are frequently given in the same appointment with a lawyer who advises on any issues and prepares the documents for signing.

You may grant two enduring powers of attorney, one relating specifically to personal care and welfare and the other relating specifically to property. The granting of enduring powers of attorney means that if a person becomes unable or no longer wishes to make decisions with regard to their welfare or property then they retain control over who would make those decisions.

Without an enduring power of attorney family or friends cannot simply step in and act on what they understand a person’s wishes to be. If no appointment has been made then applications must be made to the Family Court for orders appointing a property manager and/or a welfare guardian which can be time consuming and expensive.

Please contact Lorraine Michell at our Ferrymead offices to make a will or create enduring powers of attorney. We recommend that a meeting is the best way of dealing with these, however we also provide an option for making a will online at www.saunders.co.nz.

THE first team at Ferrymead Bays Football Club has had a busy period with three Mainland Premier League games in eight days.

They picked up seven of the nine MPL league points on offer.

It started well with a 3-1 home win over Christchurch United at Barnett Park. Wiremu Piercey grabbed two goals and Russell Kamo scored late on to give Bays three points.

On Tuesday night at ASB Park, Bays played a catch-up game against Western FC.

This game also finished 3-1 thanks to a Piercey well-struck free kick, a Russell Kamo penalty and a nice goal from Josh Smith.

These games took their toll and some tired legs were on show when Bays

visited Coastal Spirit on Saturday in an East Coast local derby.

Coastal Spirit opened the scoring after five minutes through Mike Willoughby, but Kamo headed home the equaliser shortly afterwards.

There were chances for both teams to grab the points but neither side could force home the winner as the game ended 1-1.

This means, with four games to go, Bays still top the table by three points from Cashmere Technical, who visit Barnett Park on Saturday in a game that will possibly decide the destination of the MPL Trophy.

Coach Mick Braithwaite is hoping for a big crowd to get behind his team as they chase

back-to-back titles.

Busy period yields good points pick-up

Score time: Russel Kamo heads for goal.

IT has been another challenging season for the Sumner Wave in division one of the Metro Club Competition, with a slow start to the season denting the confidence of the team and leading to a string of losses.

The trophy cabinet will not stay bare over the summer, though, their lone victory of the season coming over arch rivals New Brighton in the ‘Battle of the Beaches’ and securing the club the Falton Shield for the first time since they entered division one three years ago.

And while the tangible results may not have been forthcoming, the young talent that Sumner Rugby has attracted and continues to develop, including Theo Commassaris, Ben Corston and Aaron Kelly, and the inspirational form of Canterbury ITM Cup lock-forward Luke Katene, would suggest more fruitful times lie ahead.

The division two side, under the tutelage of first-year senior coaches Barry McLaughlin and Dave Dunn, have had a frustrating season, having shown plenty of ability and spirit, but narrowly losing some crucial games. Ending their season playing in the bottom six and competing for the Bowl the side has won two in a row, and is starting to show the consistency and confidence they have promised all year.

With just weeks remaining in the season the on-field results may not have been as good as the club would have hoped for in their 125th jubilee year. Nevertheless the traditional Sumner RFC spirit is as strong as ever off the field, and the future of the club looks to be in good hands with the majority of the senior side being under 23, and committed to a long-term stay at St Leonard’s Square.

Celebrating Success 2012

What is the best solution when a school has a large number of staff members keen to undertake postgraduate study? Bring UC College of Education to the school. This initiative gets teachers talking with one another and critically reflecting on their practice, which ultimately benefits the students. There are a large number of teachers doing Post Graduate Studies at Linwood College, led by Chris Jansen, Head of Leadership Studies from UC.

Due to the academic success of the programme last year, the University of Canterbury is running the XL programme again this term at Linwood College to assist Pasifika students with their homework and examination preparation. The Minister, Hon Hekia Parata, highly commended the College this year on the success of the XL programme in 2011.

Tait Communications continue to work with our students, building capacity with build days where students have a fun day sharing ideas, problem solving and building robots. All digital classes are timetabled to build and programme robots which is extremely popular.

We congratulate Michael Forster who has been awarded the following prizes at Oxford University:The Vinerian Scholarship; Proxime Accessit; The Allen & Overy Corporate Finance prize; The Faculty prize for Law in Society, and the Faculty prize for Regulation.

“The Wiz” an Outstanding Success

Academic Success for former student!

Congratulations to Merrin Diack and Andrew Murphy on their outstanding production of “The Wizz” by Frank Baum. The Linwood College Orchestra, under the guidance of Andrew Murphy, supported the story with their well-known, well-executed, jazzy musical talents. This was a production described as quirky, entertaining, and totally absorbing.

Congratulations to John Lali who has been selected to attend the APEC Youth Skills Conference in China on August 10 to 19 this year. John will attend the opening ceremony in Beijing, and then travel to Jiangsu Province and Shanghai City.

Linwood College Leading the Way

Newly Established Chinese Course

Linwood College is a foundation member of the Canterbury Tertiary College, a group of organisations, led by CPIT, to provide secondary students with the opportunity to complete vocational courses while attending secondary school. Linwood pioneered these opportunities and has developed lasting relationships with local industry, Industry Training Organisations (ITO’s) and the local Polytechnics. It currently offers courses in Automotive, Engineering and Construction at Year 12, with pre entry courses in Year 11.

On Tuesday, 3 July, 2012, Dr Hong Hu and Dr Adam Lam from the Confucius Institute donated a number of resources to our newly established Chinese course. Perhaps the most novel items were sets of ‘Soundic Multi-Talking Posters’, which at first glance do not appear any different from normal posters. However, when words and sentences are touched with a special electronic wand, a very clearly recorded voice of a native Chinese speaker is immediately produced through a speaker.

Congratulations to Linwood College students Sam Mitchell, who won the Golden Boot award for scoring the most goals, Hamish Mitchell, who won the golden glove for conceding the fewest goals and Joe Davies, who also made the team. Hamish Mitchell

This exhibition is inspired by and is also a tribute to ‘Girl’s Own’ Annuals. It features work by five frighteningly fabulous, tremendously talented women; none of whom should be, or need to be rescued.

The five artists are:Susan Braithwaite Living in Little River, Susan’s artwork is a combination of jewellery and 3D sculpture, using new and vintage tins, in a unique patchwork art form. For this exhibition Susan has experimented with new sculptural shapes that fit with the Girl’s Own theme.

Jane DownesResiding in Little River, Jane’s sculptures explore the point where nature and the domestic meet science and engineering. She uses recycled, industrial and found materials to (re)create delicate, fleeting, familiar objects and the forms we treasured as children.

Katrina Perano A Little River local, Katrina has been influenced by historical NZ and its creatures. Using glass wood and tin, common materials used in her grandparents and parents day, these materials were also used during the period of the Girl’s Own annual, showing the British influence of the time.

Tiffany Thornley“I loved the books when I was young, even though the girls were English and went to boarding schools. They were free of adults and parents, had fun and adventures and rescued people. I am sure that is when I learnt ‘Girls can do anything’”, says Christchurch painter and print maker Tiffany of her memories of the Girls Own annuals.

Barb WarrenOhoka painter Barb again brings her dark and provocative narrative to Little River. Providing a different take on “girl’s own”, her paintings reflect girls as they once were and girls just as they are today.

Photo competition marks 150 years of Botanic Gardens

Captured in colour: Mayoress Jo Nicholls-Parker officiates at the launch of the photography competition at the Botanic Gardens.

SEASONED and budding photographers can celebrate next year’s 150th anniversary of Christchurch Botanic Gardens by sending in their best shot.

Christchurch City Council and the Friends of the Botanic Gardens launched a photo competition on Friday, with the winner to be announced in July 2013 as part of the Gardens’ anniversary celebrations.

Mayoress Jo Nicholls-Parker said photographers had almost a year to capture the splendour of one of New Zealand’s most beautiful public spaces.

“We want to encourage photographers to capture the Gardens in different seasons. The light and shadows stand out at some times of the year, while others are great for colours and people.”

Photographers can enter in adult or youth sections across three categories:

• The ever-changing Gardens – reflecting the Gardens through the seasons.

• The Gardens through your eyes – illustrating the personal experiences of the Gardens that make for enduring memories.

• The nature of the Gardens – focusing on plants and animals.

Prizes include photographic equipment, display mounted prints and a public exhibition of the winning entries.

A photography workshop is planned at the Gardens in Spring 2012 to help competitors understand some of the opportunities and challenges of shooting on this site.

More information about the competition is available at www.friendschchbotanicgardens.org.nz.Artistic donation

assists Court TheatreCAXTON Press has donated $10,000 from the proceeds of Peter Morath’s book Christchurch: A Nostalgic Tribute to The Court Theatre’s fundraising appeal.

Caxton Press managing director Bruce Bascand said Mr Morath’s book had proved popular with readers.

“The response to Peter’s photographic essay on pre and post-quake Christchurch has been wonderful; as long-term supporters of The Court we are delighted to be able to donate to the theatre.”

The Court Theatre’s artistic director Ross Gumbley said he was thrilled with the donation.

“Caxton Press has found a way to both celebrate our city’s past and contribute towards its future at the same time.”

The donation will be used to replace assets lost in the Arts Centre.

Fantastic weekly specials at the Oak ‘n’ Ferry Advertising FeAture

Filling bites: Try their steak

sandwich with a generous serving of

fries.

Pop in to the Oak ‘n’ Ferry and enjoy the friendly atmosphere it provides, along with great service and delicious

food at fantastic prices! Owner Gordon Hurrell has been involved

in the pub scene for many years in Christchurch.

He took over the Oak ‘n’ Ferry, formerly known as the ‘Good Bastards’, in September 2010.

After a total revamp of the old bar, Gordon also introduced to the Oak ‘n’ Ferry affordable dining to complement the bar prices well known to be the best in town!

He is delighted to have head chef Vicky McSherry return from Melbourne after spending six years working as a chef there to be part of the Oak ‘n’ Ferry.

Vicky could see a lack of quality well priced food outlets in Christchurch, especially after the quakes, so she is delighted to be able to provide affordable fresh food for

her customers. The restaurant side opened in May last

year and is steadily becoming the place to eat in Woolston and its surrounds.

“We have a core group of return diners who eat with us at least once a week, and once new diners eat here they vow to return,” says Vicky.

If it’s a snack you are after, the Oak ‘n’ Ferry are happy to provide an all-day menu consisting of nachos, wedges, toasted sandwiches and other tasty bites.

For restaurant diners, one of their bestsellers is their 200g rump steak for only $15, served with chips and salad or stir fry vegetables and mash, with your choice of gravy, peppercorn, garlic butter or their ‘world famous’ mushroom sauce.

Their mighty works burger, which has beef, bacon, cheese, onion, egg, tomato and mushroom, is a great value at only $13.

Look out for their weekly specials, too, from spicy barbeque pork ribs to battered oysters and whitebait (when in season). There is always something delicious on the board!

With a majority of the food made on site, including the burger patties, hash browns, all sauces and dressings as well as their fabulous mouth-watering deserts, such as triple chocolate brownie with raspberry couli, sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce or white chocolate berry flan, all served with ice cream or cream will leave you completely satisfied.

A kids menu is also available for only $8, which includes a free ice cream sundae.

Next time you are in Woolston, take the time to unwind at Oak ‘n’ Ferry at 608 Ferry Road and enjoy what the place has to offer.
