Our town centres are really starting to shine as we continue to work with community groups to cultivate the unique identity of each area. Over the past few months we have added street furniture in Maylands, planter boxes in Bayswater, and murals in Noranda. Our latest project is a pocket park in Morley with The Morley Momentum. Hand in hand with these groups and passionate, dedicated local volunteers, we are creating vibrant areas that entice you to visit, and then encourage you to relax, linger and support local businesses.

I am excited about a full calendar of local events for spring, including our annual Community Art Awards and the popular Garden Awards - both launching in September. We love to celebrate our community, and I’m looking forward to seeing the talent on display this year.

As always, there are plenty of free events in the City and on the back of this edition is a list of events to add to your calendar. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page to stay up-to-date and see what’s going on across the District.

Local clubs and community groups are always teeming with ideas about how we can make living in the inner east even better, and we really want to help those ideas come to life. The Better Bayswater Grant offers these groups funding to help them host a community project, so check out the back page for more information.

This is the perfect time of year to make the most of everything our City has to offer, so I encourage you to get out there and enjoy being part of the Bayswater community.

Did you know the City offers free street trees?

If there’s suitable space on the verge outside your home or business, we can help you select a tree and plant it for you. The City will maintain the tree over its lifetime - all we ask is you give it a bit of water to help it through the summer months in its first couple of years.

Visit our website to request a free street tree.

Reduce your energy bill Trees have a cooling effect during summer and protect your home from wind during winter. This reduces your reliance on air conditioning and heating.

Create a natural habitat Street trees create a biodiversity corridor to allow birds and other wildlife to move through our suburbs.

Beautify your neighbourhood Leafy streets not only look great, they add value to surrounding properties.

Cool your street On a hot day, it can be up to 10 degrees cooler in the shade. Trees create liveable neighbourhoods by making it more comfortable for people to spend time outdoors.

How did you become involved with the Bayswater community?

I walk a lot in my suburb of Maylands, and almost every day I walk along Guildford Road. The neglect was hard to ignore - the lack of shade, the condition of some of the footpaths, the big derelict lot near KFC, and the very few safe crossings. This prompted me, several years ago, to get involved with our local Ratepayers Association and lead several community campaigns to push for improvements. 

What inspired you to become a Councillor?

The possibility of being able to bring about positive changes ‘from the inside’, even through gradual steps. I wanted to sit around the decision-making table on local issues, represent others, and look out for the public interest.

What do you love most about living in the City of Bayswater?

We are lucky to be living so close to the Swan River. Walking and cycling along the riverfront are both things that I enjoy doing with my family. It’s very calming and makes you feel close to nature without having to travel too far.

We all know someone who gives their time, experience and generosity to make the City of Bayswater a better place to live.

You can nominate them for a Community Citizen of the Year Award. There are four categories:

Citizen of the YearA person you believe has provided outstanding service to their community.

Citizen of the Year – YouthA young person you believe has provided outstanding service to their community. To be eligible, the person must be under 25 years of age on January 26.

Citizen of the Year – SeniorAn older person you believe has provided outstanding service to their community. To be eligible, the person must be over 65 years of age on January 26.

Award for Active CitizenshipThis is an award for a community group that has excelled over the past year.

This year, the City has added a new award to be presented alongside the Citizen of the Year Awards:

Women in Leadership AwardFor a woman who has made a significant contribution to the community during the past year.

The awards are presented at the City’s Australia Day event. To nominate, visit bayswater.wa.gov.au/community. Nominations close 31 October 2019.

Pocket park gets a face liftThe City has partnered with local group The Morley Momentum to revitalise a pocket park on Progress Street in Morley. The new design features seating, a deck, footpath and festoon lights and will be completed with plenty of greenery.

Located between the busy retail areas of Coventry Village and Galleria Shopping Centre, the pocket park will provide a place for shoppers to meet friends, have lunch and take some time out. The Morley Momentum was successful in securing a Stronger Communities Grant from the Federal Government to help fund this project.

Your Council, your sayThe 2019 local government election will take place on Saturday 19 October.

The City of Bayswater election is run by postal vote through the Western Australian Electoral Commission; and we would like as many residents and ratepayers as possible to have their say.

Make your vote count:

Check your enrolment. If you are enrolled on the State Electoral Roll, you are automatically enrolled on the corresponding local government roll. You can check by visiting the WA Electoral Commission website elections.wa.gov.au/enrol.

Complete your voting pack. You will receive a voting pack in the mail at the end of September. If you don’t receive yours, you can pick up a replacement pack from the City of Bayswater Civic Centre.

Post your vote. Make sure to post your vote by Monday 14 October to ensure it arrives by 6pm on election day. If you miss this deadline, you can hand deliver your vote to the City of Bayswater Civic Centre before 6pm on 19 October.

The Garage Sale Trail is the nation’s biggest weekend of garage sales. An estimated 400,000 Australians will get involved this year by either by selling their pre-loved stuff at a garage sale, or shopping the trail for bargains and unique finds.

Get help with your sport feesThe State Government’s KidSport program offers up to $150 towards sporting club fees for eligible children aged 5 to 18 years old.

We want to make sure every child with an interest in sport has the opportunity to play, so the City is offering approved KidSport applicants the chance to apply for an additional $50 per financial year towards club fees.

How long have you lived in the City of Bayswater?

I’ve lived in the City of Bayswater my whole life in both Noranda and Morley.

What is Bayswater’s best kept secret?

Most Baysie residents are familiar with Riverside Gardens and Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary, but not so many people know that the largest bushland reserve in the City and one of the last remaining habitats of a diverse range of native flora and fauna, is actually in Noranda at Lightning Swamp Bushland. This natural reserve is important for the lifestyle quality for local residents as the bushland contributes a better weather microclimate for the area as well as mosquito control. The

total area is 71.3 hectares of natural bushlands, damplands and wetlands and has been conserved and protected by the City of Bayswater and the Friends of Lightning Swamp for over ten years.

What do you love most about living in the City of Bayswater?

There are so many great things about living in the City of Bayswater - we have large amounts of public open space that are beautifully maintained, we are in close proximity to the Perth CBD, the airports and the Swan River, and we have a vibrant multicultural community. In Noranda, my two favourite things are the quiet, safe streets and the fact that there’s only one set of traffic lights in the entire suburb!

Creative MaylandsWith four successful Neighbourhood SOUP events under their belt, local group Creative Maylands have already made a big impact on the Maylands community. Inspired by the popular Detroit SOUP micro-granting model, Neighbourhood SOUP brings people together to enjoy dinner and hear local creatives pitch their ideas. Community members are invited to come along, enjoy some soup and vote for their favourite project.

The Creative Maylands team have helped a number of exciting projects get off the ground through Neighbourhood SOUP, including a local film festival, dads’ group art project, and plastic free workshops. The group have also contributed to other local projects from public art to sundowner events.

KidSport helped more than 20 kids become members of Morley Bulldogs Junior Football Club this year.

Is it a drink bottle? Is it a plastic bag? It’s both - and a park bench too.

Did you know you could be enjoying your picnic in the park sitting on recycled packaging?

The City has installed 38 new benches in 16 of our parks this year, each made from around 20,000 plastic bags and bottles. Our new benches require less maintenance and last far longer than traditional park furniture. Win-win!

Thanks to community groups, there are now 20,000 more local, endemic plants in the City’s nature reserves and wetlands. Hundreds of volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help out during the City’s Community Planting Days over winter, and we can’t thank them enough.

It’s time to register your pet

Senior support sessions

If you share your home with a four-legged friend, you may receive a notice in the post to let you know your pet registration is due to be renewed by 31 October. It is a State Government requirement that dogs from the age of three months, and cats from the age of six months, are micro-chipped and registered with your local Council.

Why do I need to register my pet?By registering your pet, their information is entered into the City’s database. This gives us a description of your pet, as well as your details, making it easier to reunite you with your pet if they go missing. Your registration fees also support important animal facilities and services including dog parks, ranger services, and community education.

You will find instructions on how to renew your pet registration on your notice. If you are registering your pet for the first time, visit the City’s website to download a registration form.

Learn more about issues that affect us as we get older at one of the City’s free information sessions. We’ve partnered with service providers to bring you relevant information to help you make informed choices.

Care and support for older people Umbrella Multicultural Community Care Services will talk you through care options, choosing the right provider for you, and how to navigate the My Aged Care government website, all while you enjoy morning tea.

This session is suitable for older people and their friends or relatives. Bookings are essential. Please email community.services@bayswater.wa.gov.au or call 9270 4107 to book before Friday 25 October.

Your rightsLearn how to protect your rights and where to find assistance on family agreements, power of attorney and guardianship, at this free information session presented by the Older People’s Rights Service. Morning tea will be provided.

Stay on your feetNew exercise program for older adults

Looking after our health becomes even more important as we get older. By improving your strength and balance, you reduce your risk of falls and injury later in life.

In partnership with Injury Matters, the City is offering free exercise classes to residents aged 55 years and over as part of a new program called Stay on Your Feet. The six week program kicks off in October, with a different fitness class each week.

Maylands Library offers a free program for children aged three to five years old to practice speaking English in a fun and relaxed environment. From 23 September, you can apply for funding for up to 50 percent of the total cost of your project (up to a maximum of $5,000) through the Better Bayswater Grant. Application forms will be on the City’s website until Monday 21 October.
