ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Do not say anything that cannot be understood at once in the hope that it will eventually be understood.” Hillel in Pirkei Avot 2:5.

Many of you have told me you enjoy these weekly messages. While positive feedback may feel good, negative feedback can be more important. Such is the case with last week’s message.

One member wrote that my comments on the importance of membership renewal were out of touch. He told me I wrongly assumed everyone had a baseline understanding of the shul’s finances, the importance of membership fees and familiarity with the obligations process.

Membership fees and fundraising such as aliyot and sponsorships account for 74% of $2.1 million revenues we budgeted for 2020 with catering and rental income comprising 20%. Through the first six months of 2020, 93% of actual revenues came from members with catering and rental income generating only 6% due to COVID. Members are BAYT’s primary and most important source of financial support, more than ever.

Some members are experiencing exigent financial difficulties just to put food on the table, pay the mortgage or rent or cover prescription copays. If this describes you or someone you know, please reach out to Rabbi Korobkin in confidence. He will try and help you find assistance. If you want to renew but don’t think you can swing it, BAYT will not deny you for financial reasons. You can find a subsidy application at https://www.bayt.ca/form/online-obligations-form5781.html. Simpler than a tuition subsidy application, our Obligations committee will help you through our streamlined process with discretion and respect.

Another member who understood my intended thesis wrote I should have emphasized BAYT has been robustly serving our members throughout COVID even though our doors have been closed. “Dues are not about turning on the AC and lights for minyan. Dues support our rabbis and lay leaders who in turn support the community in vital ways more and more necessary during COVID,” including:

Support for bereaved families unable to have a normal funeral and shiva.

Support for those who could not be with their loved ones before passing due to COVID restrictions.

Support and advice for those who have lost parnassa due to COVID.

Paskening difficult halachic questions arising out of COVID from Pesach preparation to Tisha B'Av fasting.

Tending to the needs of those who are ill or homebound as well as their families.

High quality on-line learning accessed by thousands locally and worldwide.

Thousands of phone calls, Zoom visits, door visits and even a few drive by events just to check in, offer encouragement or to celebrate, such as we did on Yom ha'Atzmaut.

I’m writing this on Tisha B’Av knowing I missed the mark last week. Hopefully, this message provides a bit more clarity and understanding.

Shabbat Shalom.

Jeffrey Brown

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

May I wash the dishes after a meal on Shabbat? [Note: The following answer assumes one does not use hot water, hard soap, sponges, steel wool, or drying towels, all of which may pose separate problems.] We may not prepare on Shabbat for needs which will arise after Shabbat. However, we may wash dishes which we might need on Shabbat itself, even if that need is uncertain. Many authorities even permit washing dishes when clean dishes are already available. One certainly may wash dirty dishes if they are attracting bugs, or if their presence poses a hygiene risk. (Shabbat 113a, 118a; Tosefta Shabbat 12:17; Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Shabbat 23:7; Raavad and Maggid Mishneh ibid; Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 323:6; Magen Avraham 323:9; b'Tzel haChochmah 4:130; Yesodei Yeshurun 4:307; Teshuvot v'Hanhagot 1:223; Beer Moshe 6:82; Shemirat Shabbat k'Hilchatah 12:footnote 4; Mishneh Halachot 6:80)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

REOPENING UPDATE: B"H, minyan attendance has been steadily increasing as our members are becoming more comfortable with davening under the current conditions. But as minyanim continue to fill up, it is important that if you register for a minyan, ( that you keep that appointment, since you may be depriving someone else the opportunity to daven at the minyan. Also, on a sparse day, the minyan may be relying upon you to make the minyan. If you decide to not attend, please go back to the online signup (below) and delete your name from the list. Please register for all Shabbos and weekday minyanim using the "Sign Up Genius" app. Please click HERE, and you can decide for the entire week which services you'd like to participate in. . Please note that priority for minyan registration is currently for BAYT members only. If you are a non-member, please do not register until Friday afternoon, at whichtime you are welcome to register if there is space in the minyan.

Wishing you a beautiful and healthy Shabbos, Rabbi Korobkin

Weekly Parsha by: Rabbi Spitz As Bnei Yisroel prepare to enter Eretz Yisrael, Moshe asks Hashem to annul the decree and let him enter the Land of Israel. Ha-shem does not allow Moshe to even be buried in Eretz Yisroel. He does, however, allow Moshe to climb a mountain and view all of Eretz Yisroel from a distance. The entire generation of people who witnessed Matan Torah had died out. Moshe was now speaking to a brand new generation. As such, he repeats the Aseret Hadibrot, the Ten Commandments, that the Jewish people had received at Har Sinai. Moshe teaches the Jewish people the first paragraph of Shema. In the first line, "Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokainu Hashem Echad”, we declare that Hashem is the one and only creator of the universe. The rest of the paragraph teaches us to learn Torah and cherish the Mitzvot. The Mitzvot of Tefillin and Mezuzah are mentioned in this paragraph of Shema as well.
