Six Sigma initiative has become a ra ge.

Six Sigm a is being perceived to take people to higher level ofpe rfor m an ce w i th f ew e r m ist ak es w h ile m a kin g it a st ra te gic opt ion f ort ransforming an organizat ion.

Six Sigm a is a Program to be ow ned and led by leadership orient ingst rategica lly tow ards market p lace and customer sa t isfact ion .

Six Sigm a is described as a m ethodology to im prove businessprocesses and is supposed to provide m etrics that str ives for nearperfection.

Six Sigm a e mbod ie s a d iscip lin ed , d at a- dr iv en a na ly tica l a pp roa ch for

reducing var ia t ion in any process and thereby e liminat ing defects.

BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING :

• Projects rem ain open mu ch longer than the ant icipated 3- 6 m onths,som e stuck in an ea rly phase of Six Sigma Life

• Black Belts are una ble to get cooperat ion ( from functions anddepartm ents) in collecting data, identifying root causes, etc.

• Team s lose focus part of the w ay through th eir Projects

• Successes w ith Projects in one departm ent or function are not

reapplied in others

• Manage rs resist a ssigning high perform ers to Black Belt j obs, k eepingthese perform ers for “real w ork” instead

• Managers see Six Sigma as com peting w ith other im provementinitiatives, and are reluctant to part icipate

• BBs do not have ade quate know ledge on right applicable m eth odology

VENUE AND TIMINGS:

The Sessions shall be held 09.30 hrs to 18 .00 hrs every day,in two phases: a) 1 9 – 2 5 N ov em b er 2 0 1 2 , and b) 1 7 – 2 5 Ja nu ar y 2 0 1 3at the I ndian Stat istical I nstitute; 8th Mile, Mysore Road, Bangalore 560 059(Between the Bangalore University and the RV Engineering College on Mysore Road).

WHO CAN ATTEND:

• Degree holder in any discipline, preferably with at least 6 months of specializedtraining in Quality Management Sciences from a recognized institutions like I SIetc. and/ or

• Certified Green belts from recognized certification bodies like I SI .

• Each candidate should have at least 3 years of w orking experience andexposure in conducting/ guiding/ participating in improvement projects.

THE TRAI NI NG SESSI ON SHALL I NCLUDE TOPI CS LI KE:

Overview of Six Sigma Methodology, I dentification, Prioritization and selection of I mprovement opportunities, Roles and responsibilities in Six Sigma implementation.

Over view of Six Sigma Project execution (DMAI C or DFSS/ DMADV) (Define- Measure- Analyze- I mprove & Control or Design for Six Sigma/ Define- Measure- Analyze- Design and Validate), and Gate Review Questionnaire.

Development of Project Team and Charter, Define and M ap Processes to be improved ( SI POC - Supplier, I nput, Process, Output, Customer), I dentification of Critical To Customer / Critical To Business (CTQ/ CTB) characteristics, Concept of tree diagram, Voice of Customer, Concept of Quality Function D eployment.

Types of Data, Statistical distributions - Binomial, Poisson, Normal, Exponential and Weibull; Prioritization Matrix, FMEA and their use in Data Collection Planning.

I ntroduction to various softw are packages for data display & a nalysis like Excel, Minit ab, JMP etc.- understanding in usage & interpretation of output along with each topic, Measurement System Evaluation for measurable (Gauge R&R) as well as for attribute data (Kappa Value and Confidence interval for agreement with expert); Understanding variation - Special causes vs. Common causes 

(like Dot Plots, Box Plots, Histogram and Control Charts), Stratification methods (like Pareto, Bar Diagrams, Stratified Dot Plot, Stratified Scatter Plot, Box Plot, Multi Vari Charts etc), Normality test of a data, and concept of confidence interval; Evaluation of Process Capability for Data,Concept of Short Term, Long Term Process Capability and assessment of Sigma level.

I dentification of Value-Added and Non-Value-Added activities ( use of lean concept), Organizing for potential causes using Cause-&-Effect diagram, FMEA & Tree Diagram; Verification/ validation of causes using work place investigation (GEMBA), Concept of correlation and Regression and use of t he same in validat ing causes; Concept of Test of Hypothesis like 2 Sample t, Chi Square, ANOVAetc and use of the same in validating the causes; Sample Size determination for a given confidence level; Concept of Multiple Regression and Logistic regression and use of the same in validating the causes; Concepts of Exploratory Dat a Analysis.

Concept of Design of experiment and details of full factorial, fractional factorial and screening designs; Generate I mprovement I deas using Creativity Techniques (Traditional & non traditional) 

Lean Concepts, including Kaizen, Solution Evaluation Criteria, Evaluation of solutions and selection of solutions, Change Management Process dealing with resistance to change, Process of piloting the solutions, Risk Analysis through use of FMEA or relate d m ethodologies, Concept and Examples of Poke Yoke, Visual Workplace,, kaizen and 5S, Planning for full scale implementation ( use of Gantt Charts, Microsoft project, planning grid, involvement Matrix) Simulation, Business forecasting.

Evaluation of results after implementation, Monitoring the results t hrough statistical Process Control (like Control Charts, Pre-Control Charts etc) after implementation of the solutions,Monitoring the results as a part of established QMS through use of process audit, product audit and internal audits, I nstitutionalization and integration of the solutions, Process of Closing the Project, Work through at least 3 six sigma projects of different applications, Documentation of a Project.

The program also may cover additional topics like Process Capability Baselining, Business forecasting, Simulat ion etc.

CERTI FI CATI ON CRI TERI A

The participants who have completed the programme successfullyi.e., a) maintaining 100% attendance andb) scoring minimum 70% marks in the examinat ion conducted on the last day of the

program,shall be cert if ied on c) submission of one completed Project within SI X MONTHSfrom the end of classroom training.[The project which has started after the commencement of the program only will be considered forcertification]
